5 out of 5 stars Doesn't Get Any Better Than This.......2006-02-02

It is rare, in the first place, to obtain a digital recording of Pakhaavaj, let alone good recordings of maestros. This recording is an absolute feast.

Raja Chatrapati Singh was one of the finest exponents of this instrument. Unlike the tablaa whose popularity has skyrocketed in recent years, the Pakhaavaj, its ancestor, remains fairly unknown and uncared for. Hopefully, CDs like this will make Pakhaavaj an instrument to explore by musicians and listeners alike.

For the connoisseur the Ganesh Paran is an orgasmic delight while for the newly-initiated it will be a lesson in percussion.

Grab this CD before it's too late. Treasure the sleeve notes as much as you cherish the CD. And, for God's sake, so not (NOT) lend it - too precious to let away anywhere three feet from your collection!

4 out of 5 stars Best Solo Pakhawaj Recording.......2002-12-05

This is easily the best solo pakhawaj recording out there - the best, most senior, most reputable pakhawaj player that was ever recorded, from an age of wizards that we must grudgingly admit is no more. The majority of the CD has his Highness elaborating on two compositions of his own, written with drum syllables to pronounce names of Hindu deities. One of these, the Ganesh paran, is even notated in the booklet! The accompaniment includes a bell used as finger cymbals, and, of all things, a surbahar playing along with the harmonium.

Interspersed are two shorter tracks, more standard fare. These sound like most any pakhawaj record, but the longer tracks are absolute gems and this CD a must-have.

I say his Highness, because the Raja was a real king; of course the Indian kings and princes don't perform any government function anymore, so he can be likened to a European Count or Baron, but his title was still King. This must be a fantastic opportunity for exotica collectors - even if you don't understand the music, it's a record made by a REAL KING! :)

By the way, this CD is supposed to be out of print since forever. If Amazon[.com] still has it, it might be a real find.
