Product Description
Will Millar's newest instrumental album, "Irish Gold" is set apart from his previous instrumental recordings. It's the first time Will has chosen to record melodies that are near and dear to the hearts of a multitude of homesick Irish; old melodies that remind them of home. They are your Irish grannie's Heart Songs, passed down to become a part of the culture and the memories of her children, growing up in new lands. These popular old songs have lived in Irish Hearts for over a hundred years; it is where old friends and strong, smooth whiskey conjure up the tunes in this collection of Irish Gold--the best-loved melodies that the Irish gave the world. They are presented in their pure form on acoustic instruments. Will has provided the tunes on this album and the listener will surely provide the voice.

4 out of 5 stars George is Wright.......2005-04-19

This was my second theatre organ CD purchase several years ago (after "The Mighty Wurlitzer: Music for Movie Palace Organs"), and I fell in love with it right away! Of course, back then I was just learning about the theatre organ, so I was eager for material.

The selections presented here are a good sampling of George's ability and repertoire. I particularly enjoyed the second track, George's own composition, "Boogie." I know personally several theatre organists who have tried to duplicate his technique on that piece and failed miserably trying!

I was amused by a reviewer's quip regarding a friend of George's saying these tracks were all "rejects." That reminds me of Virgil Fox's many attempts to bring a recording to perfection, spending countless hours on it if necessary. Well, for rejects, they sure sound pretty good to me!

I know that personal taste varies widely. However, I certainly didn't find this CD bland at all, but quite enjoyable. I think you will, too.

4 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL VIBRATIONS FROM THE PAST.......2003-12-27

I HAVE AN OLD RECORD COVERING GEORGE WRIGHT plays the MIGHTY WURLITZER PIPE ORGAN NO R-701 THERE'S A TITLE #1. "THE BOY NEXT DOOR" (HUGH MARTIN-RALPH BLANE) AND THE OLD RECORD IS PRETTY MUCH SCRATCHED . PLS ADVISE WHERE I CAN FIND IT THANKS..BJORG

2 out of 5 stars George's test tapes.......2003-10-10

This CD is a compilation of two tracks from George's first album for the HiFi label back in the mid 50's along with other material which was probably recorded at different times and later released, along with other selections, on two HiFi Life series LP's - "Sweet and Low" and "Tibia & Vox."

Except for "Stars and Stripes Forever," "Boogie" (a George Wright original composition) and "Under the Double Eagle" (a cut from a later HiFi release which was misidentified as "Washington Post March" on the original LP), none of the other material was ever intended for release. A friend of George's explained it to me this way many years ago, "Those are all rejects - every one of them. It's some stuff that he just did." Basement tapes, in other words. Some of it appears to have been test material to see how the organ would record, others tracks appear to be outtakes from material which was later released ("All Through the Night," for example, another version of which was released under the title "Evening Hymn" for the "Hymns That Live" album, most of which is available on another Legacy CD).

This CD is definitely worth having if you are a big George Wright fan, as I am. It is currently the only CD compilation of the "outtake" material available. It is worth noting, however, that the two opening tracks and the last track are now available on Banda CDs, and the sound is much better since Banda used the original master tapes rather than the tapes used to master the LP's, as Legacy apparently has.

One additional note: on all the tracks, the organ is a 5-manual 21-rank Wurlitzer originally built for and installed in the Paradise Theatre in Chicago and at the time of this recording was installed in the basement studio of Richard Vaughn, the founder of High Fidelity Recordings, Inc., the label for which these tracks were originally recorded.

1 out of 5 stars Technically Flawed CD.......2000-11-28

Legacy did a very poor job of transferring a very good original tape recording to CD. It actually sounds like they used a duplicate tape intended for a 33-1/3 record pressing instead of the original master tape recordings.

The audio equalization is so bad the mighty Wurlitzer organ screeches and grates on the ear. George Wright's Banda CD remasters are far, far, better. Legacy needs to redo this recording and volume two as well.

Bill Wood

1 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2000-10-02

The first two selections are good. The rest are really bland. The capabilities of the organ are not exploited. Definitely does not justify the "mighty" in the title.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Kim Robertson CD's.......2006-11-10

I love this CD. It is certainly one of Kim's best. I have used several of the tracks in creating photo montages. The music is so mellow and fits the mood of what I was trying to convey with my photos.

5 out of 5 stars Rich, romantic compositions for harp and voice.......2002-11-30

The tone of this CD is warm and inviting, like a glowing hearth and good, home cooking, but with the hint and haunt of a chilly evening just outside the window. As a composer and arranger, Kim Robertson just keeps getting better! Her compositions have sweep and presence and, as always, the authenticity of true heart. Here, her virtuosic harp playing and ethereal voice are backed by a whole chamber ensemble of strings, English horn, oboe, French horn, clarinet, accordion, guitar and percussion. Robertson's next release, "The Spiral Gate", continues her intriguing evolution as an artist. If you enjoy Robertson's work, you might also like that of harpist and composer Thomas Loefke, in releases such as "Norland Wind", "Atlantic Driftwood", and "December Journey".

5 out of 5 stars Like Early Morning Bells and Afternoon Jacuzzi All At Once.......2002-02-03

At my birthday party a couple years ago, everyone seemed to have the same idea of what to get me - soft, New Age albums. I'm pretty sure they were picking them out at random, because none of my friends enjoy New Age music the same way I do. But I appreciated it and thanked them and I took turns putting my new albums in the stereo as the party went on.

Well .... this one was the winner of the group. Everyone agreed. As soon as this album came on, everyone said, "Oh, who got you this one? This one's beautiful." And I had to agree!

This album is almost entirely instrumental - though some very pretty vocals show up sporatically. The album sounds like the colors "white" or "silver" - very clean, crisp music like early morning bells. But at the same time there's nothing "thin" about it. It has a soothing soulfulness that keeps it rich and spiritually rewarding, even through its bright purity.

Some of the harp pieces are so soothing and honest, I can't think of any music that would be more helpful for comforting you at the end of a stressful day.

I recommend this clean, lush album to anyone who needs something pretty just to help carry them away every now and then. And of course, I recommend it if you have a New Age or Celtic music lover for a friend like me, and you need to buy a gift. If you're picking one out at random, pick this one.

Such a voice: warm, inviting, and mysterious, like a lamp glowing in some dark, distant window. When Sandy Denny died in 1978, she left unfinished one of the most intriguing chapters in the history of rock & roll and folk music. This concert, recorded five months before her death, is a suggestion of all the power her voice and vision promised and a picture of Denny at her musical and vocal peak. While her final studio albums for Island possessed fine songs, the production and arrangements were mostly unfocused. But on this night in London, everything falls into place. Denny's vocals are expressive, verging into jazz complexity; the band, including the remarkable Dave Mattacks on drums, Pat Donaldson on bass, Pete Wilsher on pedal steel, and Trevor Lucas and Jerry Donahue on guitars, is sympathetic and rocks when necessary. And the set list features the cream of Denny's compositions. Quite simply one of the most exciting records of the year. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars I Had No Thoughts Of Flaws.......2005-07-03

Obviously, as you can gather from the other reviews here, some major reconstructive studio and electronic magic had to be conjured to even bring this concert to us at all. When you add in the caveats about Sandy battling a bad cold and a failing marriage (and a complaint I heard elsewhere about her chain smoking already starting to do to her voice what Joni Mitchell has lived long enough to do to hers), it's a wonder this is even listenable. And yet I think it is a triumph and I would hardly have noticed it's shortcomings unless someone had gone to great lengths to point them out to me. I'm old enough to remember when live performances by most of your favorite bands or artists usually sounded absolutely awful in person and even worse on tape or vinyl. I once tried recording gigs for a rock band in Austin--a likely deservedly long forgotten and unlamented group whose major distinction was that their biggest competition for work was from Stevie Ray Vaughan and his brother--in the very early 1970's using a 2-track Radio Shack 909A reel-to-reel tape recorder, and had more luck than most major bands had during the same years. So I've never expected live recordings to be anything but fraught with glitches and sub-par performance, muffed notes, etc. But if the essence of the artist was strong enough, even those poor quality recordings could be transfixing, and this concert is, at least to me, one such performance, and the problems with it minor compared to what we get from it--a portrait of one of the best singer-songwriters of our times, who voice even when ravaged could melt your heart effortlessly. The fact that it sounds halfway decent is just pure gravy. As a long time fan of Sandy's I can only be humbly thankful to the people who managed to bring us this recording, and even more grateful that is sounds as good as it does. Their work honors hers.

4 out of 5 stars Great Concert!.......2004-06-01

This concert turned out to be Sandy Denny`s last. This fact might make it quite sad to listen to it, but fortunately the music is so great that you forget the sadness, and remember Sandy for the great music she created, as a singer and composer. The fact that the CD has been released is a small miracle in itself; Sandy`s voice was not in the best condition, as she had caught a cold during the tour; so the tapes had been shelved for years. When the release of the concert was reconsidered, the tapes were in bad condition, but fortunately they were restored; and the result is really magnificent. Even though her voice is not in optimal condition, she is still great; and the band is terrific.

The concert covers her career from her early masterpiece "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" till her final album "Rendezvous" from 1977. Most of her classic songs are here; some of the performances are maybe even better than the studio versions.

My favourites are "I`m a Dreamer", "Take Me Away", "It`ll Take a Long Time", "Solo", "Tomorrow is a Long Time", "One More Chance" and "No More Sad Refrains"-

4 out of 5 stars Still an excellent album, despite some recording anomalies.......2002-06-29

I was surprised to learn only after several listens that there had been serious problems with the master tapes of this concert. I had noticed that some of the vocals on a song or two were not as loud and clear as they could have been, and the ending to "Take Me Away" stumbles, but other than that, it's not easy to spot problems. Since there isn't a lot of live Sandy Denny material available to begin with, I'd recommend this CD without hesitation. Despite the conditions described by other reviewers under which this recording was made, it is still immensely enjoyable as an album and I've listened to it as much as the Fairport albums and her box set. The band sounds great. And considering the high price of imports, the unavailability of much of Sandy's material in the USA, and the low price of this album, I would say if you already like Sandy, you can't go wrong with this album. I have to wonder what a live recording from more favorable conditions would have yielded, but it might have been a classic.

2 out of 5 stars Excellent program selection, but overblown performances.......2006-03-27

This was a disapointment. After reading the list of songs included, I looked forward to hearing this CD. The instrumentalists are wonderful in interpretation and presentation, but the vocalists, though technically very good, seem overblown for these songs. Their performances border on the operatic, with just not the right amount of nuance for the repertoire. The soprano fares better than the male voices, but when there is a duet, they never seem to truly blend, but just compete with one another. I remember the great period recordings of Joan Morris and William Bolcolm, some of which are still available on CD(including a relatively new one- see Amazon for title and details), and this CD, though well-intentioned, never approaches that level of sophistication and purity of performance.

      5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2004-10-24

William jackson does it again with this (rather strangely titled) new assemblage of nuevo-celt music. You really can't go wrong with any of his albums, and this is everything the title suggests, I can't recommend it highly enough.

3 out of 5 stars Worth it for track 10 alone!.......2003-04-23

A mixed CD of pipes and brass that offers a good variety of tunes and styles. Performances are variable (some are downright amateur), as is sound quality. Having said that, there are a few cracking (pipe) tunes in there - check out the Banjo Breakdown / Butterfingers / Caber Feidh medley by the Edinburgh City Pipers.
Overall, this CD is not bad if you ignore the brass!
