Loaded with lyrics about nightmares, pain, isolation and broken relationships, One X, the sophomore effort from Three Days Grace should be a downright bummer of a ride. Instead, the listener manages to find uplift lurking beneath the weighty lyrics as the quartet churns out a series of anthemic, crunch-chord songs. The band moves from arena-ready light metal with "It's All Over" to the sex groove of "Animal I Have Become," before plunging the listener into full-on chaotic heaviness during the anti-alienation anthem "Riot" and easing us into the atmospheric future hit "Get Out Alive." Throughout, TDG remains true to its core alt-metal sound. I love this new band.......2007-07-31

Well they have been around a while but they are new enough, who could not like this nice mix of musical tastes? It's all over, Never too late, and Riot are my favorites but I like them all. I wish I would have heard of this band sooner but now that I have I am really going to be listening to their other releases. This is good rock that does not assault the senses or hurt your ears. I hope this band stays together for a long time they seem to be different than a lot of the bands out there today, just kind of doing their own thing and not trying to sound like the band next door.

The band is excellent. They are good musicians and play tightly together. The problem is the lyrics are awful. This is nothing less than nightmares set to music. If you have these same thoughts running through your head, seek some professional psychiatric help. Absolutely not recommended for young listeners. Parents you are warned. No wonder the record industry is on the ropes.

My Favorite CD
Three Days Grace is not only for one group of people. A lot of people I know and people I don't know love Three Days Grace.Rockers, punk, and the girls scream for them. I went to their concert when they came to buffalo and they were sweet. I never heard a band that sounded just as good live as they are on the CD.Here are some of there songs: Are You Ready, Pain, Never Too late, Just Like You, I Hate Everything About You, and tons more.
When I first listened to the CD I never stopped.In my opinion this CD is amazing and I can't wait until they make another one.I play the drums and when I heard the drummer I was BLOWN away.
I recommend this CD to everyone who is willing to listen to something new.You will be impressed,Even my mom loves them.

I like the CD One X by Three Days Grace. This CD has 12 songs on it. These songs are about 3 minutes long. Three Days Grace is a Canadian band. I like the songs Riot, One X and all the other song on the CD. There is some swearing in three of the songs. My opinion of this CD would be a 10 out of 10. I love this CD so much that I downloaded it on my I pod. I would recommend this CD to kids that are older than 12 because of the swearing. I would also recommend this CD to people that like rock music

This "back-to-the-roots" road-trip documentary CD/DVD from blues-rocking guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd can be viewed in two ways--it's either the culmination of a long-held desire to promote and play with some unheralded blues veterans before they pass away (as six had already done since the recording was made, 2½ years before its early 2007 release) or a way to regain the blues audience Shepherd all but alienated on his artistically and commercially disappointing 2004 hard-rock release, The Place You're In. Ultimately, it succeeds on both accounts. Regardless of the project's inspiration, the results by and large justify whatever the means might have been to get this show on the road--literally and figuratively. Shepherd hit the highway for a week and a half along with producer Jerry Harrison (ex-Talking Heads), a portable studio, and backup musicians including the rhythm section from Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble. He searched out blues artists both obscure (the late guitarist Etta Baker, who plays in her kitchen, is a highlight) and better known (Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and B.B. King) for a series of acoustic and electric jams, all of which feature Shepherd--who, to his credit, generally keeps his hot-dogging tendencies in check. A closing concert featuring members of Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters' bands never quite generates the heat it should, but country bluesmen Cootie Stark, Neil Pattman, and harmonica ace Jerry "Boogie" McCain provide plenty of sparks. This is a wonderful bit of blues history. I take my hat off to KWS for taking a back seat to these blues legends. The music is fantastic and the DVD/CD catalogs an art form that is loosing its greatest performers every day. If you are a blues fan or want to know a bit of its history you need to get this release. It is one of the best.

Maybe it's the rythm section as well, but Kenny adds another layer to these old blues guys. I would like to see a lot more of these types of CDs before we lose some of this great music. Since the recording and the release, 5 of the players had died. What a shame for the loss, but thanks Kenny and company for exposing them to a greater audience. They all deserved it.

I bought this CD/DVD AFTER seeing KWS in concert at Viejas here
in San Diego. What a treat to see and hear Pinetop Perkins and
Hubert Sumlin among others! My estimation of KWS as a performer
and good guy increased by a quantum leap after seeing the show.
He may be one the best guitarists I've ever seen live, and he
respectfully kept that fierce talent in check when the others were
stepping out. He seems a real gentleman as well as lover of the
music and the people.

The package is excellent, a real gem. The interviews and background
materials are touching, especially of the folks that have since passed.

BUY THIS CD. THESE GUYS ARE THE REAL DEAL. YOU WON'T BE SORRY!

With a majority of the songs on 10,000 Days clocking in well past the seven-minute mark, you wouldn't be entirely mistaken in thinking that the title of the album refers to how long it actually takes to make it through the whole thing. Two of the tracks--the sitar and tabla enhanced "10,000 Days (Wings Part 2)" and its suitably epic psych-rock sister "Rosetta Stoned"--even linger on for nearly a dozen leisurely minutes each. That's delightful news for the legion of Tool fans that have been waiting five years for the follow-up to 2001's Lateralus, which debuted at number one and sold 2.3 million copies in the United States. Singer Maynard James Keenan is back on mystical form after his hiatus with the politically slanted A Perfect Circle, sounding at once ethereal and eloquent as he calmly charges through the metal tempest of the opening track "Vicarious." The rest of the band, meanwhile, hits a series of high-flying moments with tracks such as "Jambi" and "The Pot." When Tool sounds as good as it does on these songs it's hard to get enough. A Lesson In Thinking.......2007-08-02

For those of you who are too lazy to do any research, let me fill you in. I've read alot about how the song "10,000 Days" sounds like a filler, or that it's anti-climatic. Folks, this song is about the death of Maynard's mother. She had a stroke and suffered from complications for, you guessed it, 10,000 days (she passed in 2003). So these two songs ("Wings For Marie Pt.1 and 10,000 Days Pt. 2) are Maynard's way of expressing his sense of loss for his mother. I think the title of the album and song are very fitting. This whole album deals with loss on several different levels. Tool's music has far more depth and meaning than most people realize or will admit. Do yourself a favor and really listen to the lyrics on this album and open up your mind. I guarantee you're opinion will change for the better. This is an amazing album from start to finish. If you like music that is also thought provoking, you need to pick up this album.

An aquired taste?.......2007-07-22

I purchased this CD the day after it was released, so why take so long to review? For starters, this album was NOT what I expected, though, with Maynard & Company and their creativity, I should've known better than to have any expectations other than greatness. Truthfully, for the first few days I had to force myself to listen to the album; my brain didn't know how to process the music. I slowly found myself skipping to tracks like "The Pot", fully engrossed in trying to figure out the lyrics and because something hit a chord in my psyche. Interestingly enough, my favorite songs on this album have changed several times, with my current and favorite for the longest time being the behemoth title track. It evolves so impressively that by the time the track is over a whopping twelve minutes later, I'm ready to listen to it again. Most interestingly, of all the 13,000+ CDs we own (including all the other Tool albums), this album has remained in our car's CD player the longest, and is STILL there in mp3 form fourteen months later. Yes, I do often skip tracks 7, 11 and sometimes 9 because they don't have a lot of musical meat on them, but that's what the skip button is for... The remaining tracks are powerful enough to carry this album to one of my all-time favorites. Note: Be sure and purchase the physical CD if only to check out the fantastic (and Grammy-winning) packaging artwork. An amazing album, even if it IS an aquired taste.

Long live the long song.......2007-07-22

This is my first Tool album so I have nothing to compare it to in their catalogue. I grew up listening to groups like Yes, original lineup Genesis, King Crimson, Pink Floyd etc.all of whom have recorded songs that clock in at over ten minutes. I have seen them all in concert I'm 52 yrs old and am so glad to hear a record that makes me stop and really listen to what's going on. These aren't just songs, they are compositions with beginings middles and ends. The two title tracks as well as Rosetta Stoned are particularly wonderful in that they are complete ideas. Sit down and let those songs take you on a little trip. It will change you. I saw them this week at th PNC in Holmdel, NJ and while I felt they were bone crushingly loud, I was blown away by their performance. I can't wait to see them again.

The Moody Blues' second album was also their first of what would be a succession of "concept" albums. Inspired by the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper and utilizing the London Festival Orchestra primarily for epic instrumental interludes between songs, Days of Future Passed moved the Birmingham band away from its early R&B roots (as displayed on its debut album with soon-to-depart future Wings member Denny Laine) into uncharted rock territory, making them the early pioneers of both classical and progressive rock. The concept of the 1967 release was very simple, tracing a day in the life from dawn to night, from awakening to sleep. Such are the spoken words which close this remarkable recording... leaving one almost breathless at the consideration of that thought.
There is some music that is simply timeless. Music imbued with a such a quality that sets it outside of the confines of time and space... a specialness that is unique among other works. The Moody Blues landmark recording, `Days of Future Passed' is such a special piece of music. It is both timeless and far ahead of it's time.

Technically their second recording release, (following `Go Now' with mostly different band personnel), for all practical purposes, `Days' is their debut album with the addition of the mainstay songwriters Justin Hayward and John Lodge. This record is astounding in every respect, from it's concept to it's orchestration to the originality, beauty and diversity of it's songs. The time period of it's release, 1967, was the absolute peak in creativity in the music world. And indeed, this album has no predecessor in terms of sound or style. It's an original new creation, and was executed with exquisite artistic brilliance.

This was the record that launched the careers of the Moody Blues, and it was a hard act to follow, probably especially for them. Although they went on to record many more great albums... In Search for the Lost Chord, On the Threshold of a Dream, A Question of Balance, To Our Children's Children's Children, EDBDF, Seventh Sojourn, and on..... most would agree they never exceeded the beauty put down on this one.

A very young Justin Hayward opens the suite singing `Dawn is a feeling...' and the rest is a trip that takes you along through a day with a variety of moods and emotions. What is amazing is the quality of maturity in his voice, yet he was only 18 when this was recorded. Amazing. The two most recognizable songs on the record, also Justin Hayward tunes, Tuesday Afternoon and Nights in White Satin remain the strongest Moody Blues songs in their 40+ year history.

The orchestration score complements the songs beautifully with a variety of segway pieces that connect the tunes in such a way as to lead one through a story. The score is credited to a Peter Knight, but research as to who this guy is leads to a dead end. I later read in an offbeat book that Peter Knight was one of many stage names for a man named Chuck Hamil, the brother of actor Mark Hamil who starred in the original Star Wars movie trilogy. It seems Chuck Hamil is/was an amazingly gifted musician who also wrote, sang and recorded many other radio hit records of the late sixties, such as those credited to a Scott McKenzie's `San Francisco' and others (Gary Puckett?)... but he never used his real name. Interesting details!

Regardless, the origins of the album seem to be shrouded in mystery. But the quality of the music speaks for itself. I always have felt there was something special about the music of the Moody Blues. This is the album that sparked that interest, which has never died since. Great art stands the test of time, and this certainly does.

You Gotta Have It.......2007-06-06

Days of Future Passed, the first effort of the 'Phase 2 Moody Blues', is one of those landmark albums that should be in everyone's music library, Moody Blues fan or not. Having hardly no exposure at all to the world of classical/orchestral-type music, I have to admit I haven't much of an ear for it. Frankly, my musical tastes just aren't that highbrow, so I realize I'm not able to fully appreciate this album. That is my biggest obstacle in truly embracing the whole of 'Days' for the masterpiece that it is. Oh, I dearly love the Moodies songs, but the rest, well let's just say I'm getting there. The more I hear it, the more I like the orchestral parts, what I as a simple country girl have always called Beethoven/rich people music. At this point in my musical self-education, I have to heartily give DOFP my big ol' stamp of approval. In reviewing, I will briefly(or not so) give my thoughts on each song along with a yay or nay vote.
1 'The Day Begins'- NO. Haven't fully acquired a taste for poetry or chamber music- yet. Sorry Graeme.
2 'Dawn is a Feeling'- YES. Mike Pinder's opener is just lovely and well-sung by Justin Hayward but Mike's voice wasn't in top form for his part, which fortunately was brief. Pinder has said that his reference to the "smell of grass" wasn't about pot, but looking back he realized it fit well with the times.
2 'Another Morning'- YES. Another Ray Thomas number. It had to grow on me, as I normally don't care for "kiddie" songs. He does such an outstanding job vocally that I had to like it.
3 'Peak Hour'- YES. John Lodge rocks me with this great song. It's the overlooked gem on 'Days'. I had read that it was the Moodies loudest number played live for many years. Wish I could have been there to experience it. Great lyrics- if I could just find the originals. I've seen about 5 versions of it online! Lodgie and mates sing it superbly and slap play the fool out of it.
4 'Tuesday Afternoon'- YES. What can I say about this classic that hasn't already been said before? I think it's THE best Hayward number on DOFP. Justin singing this song is a little slice of heaven in my headphones.
5 'Evening Time to Get Away'- YES. Oh yes, yes, yes. Hearing John's lovely voice- especially his falsetto- at it's best is enough for this gal. "Working, living it brings. Only way to have those things. Toiling has bought too many tears". Lodge simply nailed it on this timeless ode to the working class.
6 'The Sunset'- YES. Good song- only wish Pinder would've had a longer part to sing this time. He sounded great.
7 'Twilight Time'- YES. Ray redeems himself VERY well here. His subtle vocal literally carresses the lyrics- and my ears.
8 'Nights In White Satin'- YES. Brilliant song and THE ONE Hayward will forever be known for. Though I love it, it's not my fave of his. This song manages to be both beautiful and haunting all at once. Lodge's almost eerie-sounding, wailing chorus parts never fail to get me. WOW.
9 'Late Lament'. NO. Another poem by Graeme Edge. My sincere apologies Edgie. It's not you, really. It's me. You're a fantastic drummer to be sure!

'Days Of Future Passed' will forever be known as THE record that launched The Moody Blues onto the world stage. It did so for a very good reason: it's a ground-breaking, magnificent recording, created by the minds, hands and voices of five talented young men simply doing what they love- making great music.

These new recordings of mostly recent Gill compositions are the culmination of a project aimed at recording four distinct albums: rock, romance, vintage honky-tonk, and acoustic. The Rockin' Record, virtually perfect from start to finish, begins with "Workin' on a Big Chill," its swampy groove straight out of John Fogerty and a showcase for Gill's guitar virtuosity--a groove he resumes on "Cowboy Up," with cameo harmonies from Gretchen Wilson. In an unmatched outpouring of virtuosity and energy, Vince Gill has created a 4-CD set of 43 new and original songs that MCA Records will release Oct. 17 under the title These Days. The collection is an artistic tour de force that displays Gill's mastery of lyrics and musical styles, ranging from traditional country and bluegrass to jazz and rock.

"I started looking at all these songs I had," the amiable superstar explains, "and going, `Shoot, I want to record that song, and I want to record that song.' I just kept checking with the other musicians to see if they were available. I had no deadlines, no rules or anything like that. So I just kept trying songs."

To accompany him on this ambitious undertaking, Gill turned both to artists he knew and had worked with before and to those whose music he admired at a distance. "I never try to fill up my records with famous people," Gill says. "I try to fill them up with the most talented people I can find on the face of the earth." By the time the project was completed, that group included Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Krall, Rodney Crowell, Phil Everly, the Del McCoury Band, Emmylou Harris, John Anderson, Lee Ann Womack, Jenny Gill, Amy Grant, LeAnn Rimes, Gretchen Wilson, Guy Clark, Trisha Yearwood, Bekka Bramlett, Michael McDonald, steel-guitar master Buddy Emmons and many other musical standouts.

Initially, Gill planned to pare down the songs he'd recorded to a single album. Then, in one of the studios he used, he spotted some Beatles memorabilia and recalled that the Fab Four had routinely released multiple albums within the same year.

Gill took the idea to Luke Lewis, Universal Music Group Nashville Co-Chairman, who totally supported his notion of multiple releases. In fact, Lewis came up with an even more radical strategy: he told Vince to go and record more songs that explore his passion for acoustic sounds and release a 4-CD set. And that's exactly what happened.

Gill co-produced These Days with famed keyboardist John Hobbs and sound engineering whiz Justin Niebank.

Wow, what a collection of work.......2007-07-29

Prior to a few weeks ago I didn't know anything about Vince Gill's music beyond the few hits that I had heard on the radio. Then, my wife and I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert. Wow! I went out the next day and bought "These Days" and just about the only time I get disk 2 out of my CD player is to insert #3 or #4 (disk #1 is OK, but not so much my cup of tea). If you have any tinge of liking for country type music I don't see how you could not love this set. If you are already a fan of Vince you will not be dissapointed, and if you are a new fan like me you will wonder how you missed Vince for all this time. You will probably end up buying all of his earlier work as I am now doing. GREAT work and this guy is not just getting older, he is getting better.

A lot of the songs are vintage Vince Gill. His guitar playing is nothing short of spectacular. The duets are wonderful. His guest singers blend well with Vince's, oh so sweet, tenor. I love the album, but give it only four stars because so many of the songs are featured on albums I already own.

Inspired by negative reviews.......2007-05-21

Before ordering this CD set, I read most of the reviews on Amazon. A couple of them were very negative. However, I just couldn't believe in a "bad" recording session from Vince Gill. Especially with the great stars who collaborated as guests on many of the cuts.

Well, the good news is the negative reports were just wrong. I like these CD's, there are four in the box set, more every time I listen to them. An excellent product and a great addition to any music collection that loves ballads, country, bluegrass, and yes: Vince!!

A side project doesn't usually hit gold, especially when said project is a quirky virtual collective fronted by cartoon characters. But the first, self-titled album by Gorillaz--the brainchild of illustrator Jamie Hewlett and Blur frontman Damon Albarn--actually hit platinum and turned into a surprise worldwide hit. Naturally expectations were a lot higher for Gorillaz's sophomore effort, but Demon Days actually is even better than its predecessor. With producer Dan "the Automator" Nakamura gone, Albarn, a.k.a. 2D, has paired up with DJ Danger Mouse (responsible for the infamous Grey Album that illegally mixed the Beatles and Jay-Z) to steer the musical ship, while a whole new slew of guests enlivens the proceedings. Albarn has described Demon Days as being darker, but there's a real kooky dance-party vibe coursing through the CD. Despite its somber tone, "Kids with Guns" is lifted by a killer bass line, for instance, while the catchy first single, "Feel Good Inc," is augmented by an appealing contribution from De La Soul. Other noteworthy guests include Roots Manuva and Tricky collaborator Martina Topley-Bird on the dubby "All Alone" and Happy Mondays singer Shaun Ryder on the bouncy "DARE." And yet it's a 69-year-old actor who gets to deliver the most baffling contribution--just listen to Dennis Hopper's spoken-word narrative on "Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head." They are a bunch of idiots who bought this album for the radio friendly singles. This is easily one of the most complex, intelligent, and layered albums of the decade. A addictive mix of Rock, hip hop, and brains, everysong on this album is brilliant, the only low being the far to long "Every Planet We Reach is Dead".
I've seen some people complain about it being depressing. SO WHAT? It's not emo, just honest, and truthful.
For me the album is about the wrongs of modern society, But interpratation seem to vary, with the Iraq war in the lead. Far from the "collection of random sounds" some would have you think. Yes, they are heavy on the synths, but the songs are brilliant on musical level as well, as the lyrical.
I think this album is supposed to take place in some kind of apocalyptic/and or totalitarian future, by the way.

Just so you know, lyrically this is a VERY bleak album, barely letting up in DARE

Last Living Souls 4/5- Simple opener, asking if they are the last good people left on this Earth, finally deciding that they must be with the line "Yeah, we're the last livin' souls"

Kids With Guns 5/5-My favorite track, Killer bass line, either about how we let society turn ourselves to monsters(So they're turning yourselfs to monster's/Setting yourself on fire/Turning you all to monsters/ Its all desire), or the Iraq War depending on your interpretation of the album as a whole

O' Green World 4/5-A song about either mans destruction of our only planet through polution, or mans destruction of its only planet through nuclear war. I said the album was bleak

Dirty Harry 5/5- A initially light and jumpy song, until you realize that the lightness is supposed to symbolize how those of us who have not been in war are innoncent and iggnorant of the horror AND the Iraq war(I need a gun/To keep myself from harm/ those poor people/ are burning in the sun/...I need a gun/'cus all I do is dance) The act of dancing in the song represent innocence, and about half way through, one of the best rap's i've ever heard comes out, this time from the point of view of a soldier ending in a few lines aimed directly at bush, and a couple of line of him remembering when he could dance,or be innocent(The war is over/So said the speaker/with the flight suit on/Maybe to him I'm just a pawn /So he can advance /Remember when I used to dance /Man, all I want to do is dance)

Feel Good inc. 5/5- You all know how it sounds. Its about how we surround ourselves with stuff that we think makes us feel good, because the corporations(symbolized by the De La Soul, the rapper) tell us so. But in the end all we need to be happy is purity and love(I.e. the windmill)

El Manana 5/5-Slow, and mournful. About a lost love, or maybe a soldier who commited atrocities so bad he's god has forsaken him

Every Planet We Reach is Dead 3/5- I like this song, but its drags on, and I don't mind a long song, but this DRAAAGGGGSSSS. So I have no clue what its about, because i skip it :P

And i'm stopping there, you can figure the rest out yourself. My fingers are hurt and i'm tired.

Oh, and it passes generational barriers as well, my 50 year old grandma loves this album to! Then again, she's not into what you would think of as "Old person music"(Frank Sinatra FTW!) so don't go buying it as a gift for you grammy.

A Smooth, Haunting Album.......2007-06-17

I recently reviewed Gorillaz first self titled album, giving it two stars.

Who can say why things happen the way they do, but somewhere between the release of their first album, and their second, the Gorillaz got their s~~t together.

For the first sound of 2D singing "Are we the last living souls?" to the last haunting sounds of the choir singing on "Demon Days" aside from a slight misstep, this album takes off and doesn't look back.

Each song has its own distinctiveness, but a thread of melancholy invades almost every second of the album, due almost entirely to Damon "2D" Albarn's raspy, intentionally tired sounding voice. This voice fits perfectly with 2D on the Gorillaz music videos, who looks like he's either been crying, or high on pot. LOL

Its hard to choose favorites, each song is a gem (accept, perhaps, for White Lights, but that, I'm sure, is debateable), but if I were to base it on the songs I listen to the most, it would be Last Living Souls, Kids With Guns, Feel Good INC, La Manana, All Alone, and Dare. As you can see that is like half the album, and I definately would have to point out, the other soungs are great themselves.

"Demon Days" utilizes, in a way the first album was unable to do, a perfect blend of solid beats, smooth vocals, and strong raps. I bought this album a couple of years after its release so the only question now is: when does the next one come out!?

I recently went to a Nickelback concert and Three Days Grace was opening for them. I fell in love with the band hearing their music at the concert and felt that Nickelback should opening for Three Days Grace, not the other way around!

Canada is famous for producing mainly three things: Nickelback, insanely cheap prescriptions, and Three Days Grace. This quartet of Canadian rockers really know how to keep you listening... til about track 4. Then, the rest of the CD is just filler. Here are my favorite tracks, in order:

1) Home: In my opinion, the best Three Days Grace song ever. I really identify with some of the lyrics: "I'll be coming home just to be alone... no matter how hard I try, you're never satisfied... I can hardly wait til you get off my case!!" Relatively easy to learn on guitar, too.

2) Just Like You: Second-best TDG song ever. Also, the only song I can do halfway good on drums.

3) Burn: Average, but still good.

4) (I Hate) Everything About You: Way too overplayed, but still a good song; I really like the video.

Other than tracks 1-4, you really don't need to get this debut CD. It's good, yeah, but it can be better.

3DG's Eponymous Debut........2007-05-16

During the summer of 2003, Canadian group Three Days Grace put out their first full-length effort, garnering them widespread attention and propelling them into mainstream success. 3DG play a brand of post-grunge modern rock, and they've certainly become a favorite modern contemporary of mine in that vein. This album seethes with emotive energy, adhering to themes of bitter losses, to maintaining individuality, and tug-o-war relationships. While the songwriting may not be considerably groundbreaking, it weaves with the melodic choruses to make for some distinct and memorable tracks. While the singles are strong in their own right, noted favorites here are the up-tempo and forceful "Scared," the false re-assurance of "Let You Down," the hollow resilience of "Drown," and the shot of redemption found in "Wake Up." "Take Me Under" is also hauntingly catchy, starting off slowly, with the "Take me all the way" verse that embedded itself into my mind for some time, before bursting into the chorus. And "Overrated" can be deciphered depending on the listener's point of view.

When it comes to modern rock, you really can't go wrong here. Three Days Grace have made a name for themselves since their debut, and I'm sure they'll be conducting a strong following for years to come.

This album is an excellent debut disk for Three Days Grace. Their hits come early in the album and the undiscovered songs is a jewel that people that only download their music will never find. However some of the music could be helped out if it was more complex. If you liked this CD then I would buy Three Day's Grace's sophmore album One-X Which they bring in a second guitar player, and expand on their strengths.

The Wailin' Jennys--Cara Luft, Nicky Mehta, and Ruth Moody--are three Canadian singer-songwriters with already established careers who first got together for a one-shot gig in 2002 and, to their surprise, discovered that their voices blended in an almost magical harmony. Can't stop listening to this CD!.......2007-07-05

We were first introduced to the Wailin' Jennys on A Prairie Home Companion last year and found their songs and their sound to be so memorable that we purchased tickets to see them in concert locally this past May. We have since purchased both the 40 Days and Firecracker CDs, and just can't recommend them enough. Incredible harmonies in beautifully written, inspiring, timeless songs.

Having come across the Jenny's quite by accident while listening to the Garrison Keiler Radio Show on BBc Radio 7. Their harmonising was sublime and prompted me to get on line and buy all their CDs immediatelly. To say I have not been disappointed is an understatement. These girls are the best.

Florida's brilliant singer-songwriter Sam Beam expands Iron & Wine from solo project to a gaggle of friends and family on slide guitar, percussion, and backing vocals on his second album. Fans need not worry--the hushed immediacy and rich melodies remain the focus--but new flavors abound. For instance, the strange "Cinder And Smoke" sounds like a collaboration (with banjos of course) between America, Robert Wyatt and Low. What "country" music should be........2007-06-02

Most would probably not label Iron & Wine as country music, yet to me their music fits that title better than most artists that are labeled as such. Not only the lyrics, but the atmosphere of the music overall just perfectly illustrates walking barefoot down a country road, or sitting on the porch at sunset with a glass of lemonade. This really just sounds like the country, and even though I live in the big city/suburbs, this album just really takes me there, in a way that stuff like Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw definitely do not.

The sole mastermind of Iron & Wine is Samuel Beam, an unassuming fellow with an extremely simple, yet extremely beautiful approach to music. Armed with only an acoustic guitar, his wispy vocals, and the occasional banjo, Beam comes off very much like what Nick Drake might have sounded like, had he grown up in the rural south. The feel overall is somewhat similar to Drake, but with a warmer, more down-home kind of vibe. There's also a great deal of Simon and Garfunkel influence there as well, most evident on songs like "Love and Some Verses" and "Each Coming Night". However, despite all these comparisons, there's really nothing quite like this.

Musically, this is just the perfect album to relax to. It's extremely mellow and laid-back throughout, and the closest it comes to "rocking" is on "Free Until They Cut Me Down", which is still pretty laid-back. The melodies are catchy and memorable, and the musicianship, while simple, is top-notch. Perhaps my favorite song here is the mesmerizing "Cinder and Smoke", which actually took a few listens to really grow on me. It's not as readily ear-catching as most of the rest, but it's really beautiful, with its female backing vocals, and odd hypnotic chanting outro. You might know "Sunset Soon Forgotten" and "Naked As We Came" from the Dennis Quaid movie "In Good Company", which are both excellent as well (the latter being the most Nick Drake-sounding song here). Really though, every song here is great, and distinctive unto itself. The only bad thing about this album is that it's over much too soon.

So, whether you're from the country, or you're surrounded by concrete and steel, Iron & Wine will take you to a rural paradise from which you'll never want to leave.

Mediation in the fields.......2007-05-22

Sam Beam makes intimately personal music that is oddly impersonal. While these bittersweet songs often ring from universal themes, I sometimes feel like they were straight out of my mind. That is a really neat trick, considering that this genre of folk has a tendency for navel gazing. To that extent, the second CD from Beam's Iron and Wine ranks with the likes of Elliot Smith and the late Nick Drake. These are songs that get inside of your head and stay there.

While that won't certainly be to everyone's taste (a few of my friends rate this kind of music as barely above the level of Dentist Office Muzak), the ambiance of Beam's Southern stoicism is like a contemplative walk through a field of high grass. There are songs of love and death ("Sodom South Georgia" and "Free Until They Cut Me Down") simple life and love ("Sunset Soon Forgotten" and "Passing Afternoon") set to guitar, banjo and Dobro, all sung in Beam's hushed and melodious voice. Like Ray LaMontagne has in the past couple of years (or even Leonard Cohen before them), Beam is writing deeply poetic songs that are just begging to be covered or placed in a movie soundtrack to offer context.

Recommended for fans of Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen, Ray LaMontagne, Will Oldham and Bonnie Prince Billie.

Great cd for those of you folk fans who like a twist. Quiet, moody and slightly eclectic. I was pleasantly surprised. Interesting lyrics, good songwriting, and vocals that are pleasing to the ear. A great cd for any collection.

If you buy Great Days: The John Prine Anthology, you may live to regret it. He's probably the best American folk-song lyricist of his generation, mixing low-key poignancy and deadpan humor in perfect proportions. His musical limitations serve to reinforce the understated nature of his art, and his short, plain-spoken lines (written in the offhand conversational style of his Midwestern and Appalachian characters) sneak through the back door of your imagination and won't leave. So where does the regret come in? Well, as you listen to the 41 songs arranged chronologically on these two CDs, you're going to ask yourself, "If someone can write 41 songs as good as these, isn't there a good chance he wrote more than 41?" After hearing the anthology's six songs from Prine's 1971 debut album, for example, you may decide to go out and buy that album itself. After you hear songs as delightful as "Pretty Good" and "Your Flag Decal," which didn't find their way into the collection, you may soon find yourself hunting down all 10 of Prine's original studio albums. Takes you on the gamut of emotions.......2007-01-18

This is a collection of John Prine's work from about 1971 to 1997. The songs came from Prine's first ten albums. I'm not going to argue why some songs were included and others not--this is an excellent view of Prine's work. The mastering is pretty good, the selections are both cheerful and some of the saddest songs I've ever heard, including "Donald and Lydia" and "Christmas in Prison."

In retrospect, I almost wish I'd gotten the first ten CDs instead, but this is a good start and an interesting mix of Prine's work. Well worth the price.

I had never heard of John Prine before, but I gave this CD set as a gift to one of my best friends. She loved it. I guess there are a few of his songs missing from this collection, but otherwise, she gave it a rave review!

Great Compromise.......2006-09-12

If you are like me you have JP's albums on vinyl and really didn't want to re-buy them all just so I could have Johnny in the car so this looked like a "great compromise." Like a lot of reviewers have complained they left some fine tunes off but that's just a sad byproduct of compilations, ain't it? Get over it and move on. When all is said and done this is suitable for the fan such as myself who needs a little "Paradise" and "Sabu" on his daily commute. The accompanying booklet has a lot of info from Prine about each song that makes for fine reading, too.
