Eleven tracks give an overview of four very vital and popular acts in Cuba Now. NG La Banda, probably the most modern sounding group are represented by three big hits, all with their trademark funky orchestrations a la Earth, Wind and Fire, although they also incorporate Bomba, Soca, and Funk in arrangements around classic rhythms like the Guaganco. Also at the edge of what's happening in Cuba are Los Van Van, their similarly modern approach highlighted with three recent successes. Their contemporary big band edge is enriched by violins, echoing the septeto tipicos, and references to Santeria dieties. Major star Manolin, with an almost Brazilian softness to his vocals, also incorporates funk bass elements; included is his milestone "La Bola." Great Selection of Cuban Music.......2000-05-21

If listening to this collection can't put a smile on your face, you're in need of psychiatric help. Whether you're new to this type of music and want to get a sampler, or already have a decent collection of this stuff, you should not miss this. I particularly liked the vocal work by NG la Banda in the song "La Apertadora."

Modernity with taste.......2004-11-18

These are songs inspired by Havana's oceanfront promenade and the best of Cuba's musicians and vocalists are presented to display the island's true diversity - not the old-fashioned big band Buena Vista sound so popularly associated with Cuban style.
 More than most, LAS BRISAS DE HABANA goes beyond any ordinary expectation of what Cuban music sounds like. The liner notes acquaint you with the particular style of music and the booklet that accompanies the CD is very informative in terms of the individual artists and the English translation of the lyrics. A good start for anyone who wants to know what's hot in Havana!

Clasicos de las Americas has Good Gottschalk.......2004-02-23

This six CD set has the Central and South American greats, but I prefer the North American who did some of his best composition South of the border. Louis-Moreau Gottschalk had the life of a modern day Rock Star. He is joined in this set by such prominent players as Heitor Villa-Lobos, George Gershwin, Augustin Barrios, and Carlos Guastavino. George Rabol is a favorite pianist.
