Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. This collection is a doozy--it is truly "essential." --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:

Manuel Barrueco is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. Listen to his own arrangement of Albeniz's Suite Española and you'll have trouble believing it's only two hands on one guitar. But Barrueco doesn't use his technique to show off. He's a solid musician, as expressive in Bach as in Villa- Lobos. He also makes transcriptions that respect the origins of the music. This is a wide-ranging guitar collection, but all the music is worth hearing, especially in performances like these. The disc is one of the best bargains among all guitar recordings, and Vox's recordings still sound like a guitar. --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:

Good music, engineering could be better.......2005-05-05
I almost always prefer the live perfomances when the energy of the audience carries over to the performers. This is one case when I wish I had gotten the studio version.
a classical-Latin music blend.......2005-04-22
The opening track is a version of "Libertango", heard in the fabulous soundtrack of the film "The Tango Lesson", and one of the three compositions by Astor Piazzolla, in this concert that was recorded live at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall in 2003. The group of assorted and marvelous musicians toured the world with this music, and there is a cohesion between the performers and the material they are playing that is evident, and a pleasure to hear. One hears the applause, but it is not obtrusive, and the sound is excellent for a live recording.
Very impressive is the clarinet of 6 time Grammy Award winner and composer Paquito D'Rivera, who wrote 3 of the tracks, and shows his virtuosity and Cuban soul in 7 pieces, and I especially like his "Merengue".
Rosa Passos sings and plays guitar on 4 tracks, and has a soft, clear, and pleasing voice, and 3 of the songs she interprets so well are by her fellow countryman and Brazilian bossa nova artist Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Other musicians are Sergio and Odair Assad on guitars, Kathryn Scott on piano, Nilson Matta on bass, and Cyro Baptista on percussion. Yo Yo Ma is of course the household name among them, and is masterful in his interpretations throughout; I especially like him in D'Rivera's "Afro", a fascinating piece with some experimental sounds.
Other favorites for me are D'Rivera's "Wapango", and "Cristal" (Camargo Mariano), a rhythmic duet between Ma and Scott that is terrific.
This CD has the feel of a classical chamber concert, with the warmth of melodious Latin compositions, and is a nice and unique musical treat.
The foldout insert has liner notes by D'Rivera, recording info, and mini bios of Ma's 7 fellow musicians; total playing time is 72'07.
This package contains a bonus DVD, that includes 3 videos:
1. Piazzolla's "Libertango", from the original soundtrack of Sally Potter's film "The Tango Lesson", with clips of the great tango dancer Pablo Veron.
2. "Brasileirinho", by Waldir Azevedo, featuring Paquito D'Rivera, from the "Obrigado Brazil" CD.
3. Jobim's "Chega de Saudage" interpreted by Rosa Passos, from the "Obrigado Brazil" CD.
It also includes a very short interview with Yo Yo Ma.

Sprarkling, Full of life and intensity.......2006-07-31
is how I would describe these concertos
By Camargo Guarnieri.Guarnieri now one
of the best Latin-American composers
of the 20th century composed these
concetos beetween 1931 and 1963, the
Piano Concerto #1 is recorded here for
the first time. In the first Piano
concerto we hear a lot of Brazilian
percussion such as the cuica(Friction Drum)
and reco-reco(a scraper) use masterfully
especially in the final movement of
the first concerto. The Second Piano Concerto
is equally fun to listen to, and with a last
movement that opens with a tune that
one would expect to hear out the Rio
carnival. The last concerto #3, is
is also a great work. The soloist
Max Barros is wonderful, and so
are conductor Thomas Collin and
the Warsaw Philharmonic. Indeed
music full of life, emotion and
intensity. Five Stars!!!
Sparkling NeoClassical Piano Concertos with Brazilian Tinge.......2005-04-17
The three piano concertos on this disc (Nos. 1, 2 & 3) are of a piece. They are characterized by French-inspired tonality (he studied for a time in Paris with Charles Koechlin), Stravinskyan rhythmic inventiveness, jazzy, almost Gershwinian harmonies and, most striking, Brazilian dance and folk-song coloring. The outer movements have an irrepressible élan, the middle movements are bluesy and hauntingly melodic. Orchestrations is brilliant and expert and make use of many native Brazilian percussion instruments--e.g., the cuica (a friction drum), the chocalho (a rattle), and the reco-reco (a scraper); one has to wonder whether those instruments were easily available in Warsaw where these recordings were made!
The pianist, new to me, is Max Barros, himself a São Pauleño. He is clearly at home with the Brazilian idiom and is no mean performer. The playing is marked by crisp rhythmic thrust and clear passage work. In the middle movements he is capable of a songful legato. The Warsaw Philharmonic are veterans of recordings of music from around the world and they give the pianist able support; the conductor, Thomas Conlin, known to me primarily for his fine recordings of the music of George Crumb, is clearly in his element in this music. The recorded sound is clear and lifelike; it is slightly dry and this lends a clarity to the torrents of notes in the outer movements.
This is unfailingly tuneful, tonal, rhythmically exciting music and a worthy addition to Naxos' ongoing Latin American music series. One hopes we will hear more of Guarnieri's music from them.

Fans of Paul Galbraith, superb guitar playing, and just plain nice listening will not want to miss this well-produced CD of Brazilian music (transposed) for guitar. The oldest piece is by Antonio Carlos Gomes, a 19th-century composer best known for his operas (his Il Guarany was produced at La Scala in 1870 and has recently been performed and recorded by Placido Domingo), and is fine chamber music--just "classical" enough in style, but with the unmistakable perfume of Brazil. Heitor Villa-Lobos's Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1 is a complicated work originally scored for cellos; it sounds just as intricate and warm for four guitars. Camargo Guarnieri's Four Pieces (originally for piano) are in dance rhythms--the third is particularly joyous and catchy. The Lundu by Francisco Mignone is a three-minute piece of candy--upbeat and delicious. This CD is a real treat. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:

Even their harshest critics can't accuse Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops of not trying to have fun. On The Latin Album, they tackle a repertoire that includes big-band favorites and compositions from Piazzolla, Perez Prado, and Aaron Copland (in the form of El Salon México). These are mostly dance tunes, filled with crashing percussion, Latin rhythms, and familiar melodies. To their credit, the Boston Pops get this fiesta right about half the time--opening with Alberto Ginastera's "Malambo," they set a furious, rollicking mood that's heavy on the percussion. They shine on Jacob Gade's "Jalousie" (an early hit for Lockhart predecessor Arthur Fiedler) and on the more atmospheric "Mi Cambio" by César Villalobos. Unfortunately, their arrangement of Piazzolla's "Oblivion" is about as subtle as the music found in soap operas (and about as exciting) and "Perfidia" is a disappointment, "smooth" but hardly sultry. Still, the Pops know how to play their brassy, rhythmic showpieces, and the recorded sound here is excellent. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:

Maestro Lenny was at his best in this extroverted, highly rhythmic music. The Batuque by Brazilian composer Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez will be a discovery for most people, a tremendously exciting orchestral showpiece. There's lots more excitement in the pieces by Guarnieri, Revueltas (a stunning performance of the great Sensemayá), and two pieces by the tourist Aaron Copland. (This version of El Salón México is Bernstein's stereo recording; Sony has already reissued his earlier mono one.) The late Netania Davrath sings beautifully in the familiar Villa-Lobos Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5. Sony's remastering is really first- rate. But there should have been more than 53 minutes of music, even on this mid-priced reissue. --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:
An exotic delight.......2005-05-14
When I was a lad I went to a Young People's Concert in Manhattan. Bernstein trotted onto the podium and launched into Batuque, followed by many of the works on this disc. This recording was made right at that time of this concert and captures its joy, its sense of exploration, its energy.
South of the Border, With Panache.......2002-01-11
There's a very wide range of emotions embodied in "Latin American Fiesta", a first-rate tribute to five Latino composers (and one Gringo) represented within this excellent collection. Bernstein and the Philharmonic really lay into the pieces that call for it, so much so that you may glance over your shoulder during "Sensemaya". "Batuque" is commanding; "Dansa brasileira", playful and way too short. The last work, "Sinfonia India", is misplaced geographically (not by the composer's ethnicity), but it's a highly evocative journey into the Subcontinent and a fitting capstone.
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable musical excursion.
my hero, Maestro Lenny.......2001-02-25
His interpretation of Copland has always been known as the "definitive" one, and in these two pieces, you can see why. The next three selections are by Brazilian composers, the most well known being Villa-Lobos' "Bachiana Brasileira # 5", here sung so beautifully by Netania Davrath.
Silvestre Revueltas' "Sensemayá" is fabulous. Reminiscent of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" in parts, though 100 % Mexican in feeling. It throbs with vitality, and the intensity of its rhythms is astounding...it's also a hard act to follow, which is Carlos Chavez' lot here with his beautiful "Sinfonia India". This piece may take a few hearings to fully appreciate, as there's a lot going on in it, like complex counterpoint, etc.
In my student years, I found a way (not telling how !) to hear the N.Y. Philharmonic rehearse, and would sit in total awe of Maestro Lenny...his genius and his humanity. He was my first hero, and though I never met him, my "father figure". This CD just exudes his presence...it's a special treat for anyone who ever saw him "make music" in person, and experienced the magic of it.
Netania Davrath is the star of this release.......2001-01-25

Martel has richness for Latin American songs.......2005-08-30
The songs of Argentine composer Guastavino are the "easy listening" of the album, but some are particularly beautiful. I loved the spicy harmonic language in those of the Brazilian Camargo Guarnieri. Of those by the Barizilian Alberto Ginastera, "Cancion al arbol del olvido" is a beautiful song in every way! It's very original while seeming traditional. Another Brazilian, Carlos Lopz Buchardois is very traditional, but "Oye mi llanto" is a tender and touching lament, and Martel and Boudreau express it beautifully. The songs of Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos are easily the best-written. And though I like the final "Samba classica," despite its terrible text," I loved "Serenata" the most of any song on the CD. It's very much in the grand manner, and with Martel's expressiveness, it's absolutely gorgeous!
I may well wear this CD out!
