5 out of 5 stars perfect score for a perfect movie.......2007-02-19

Carol Reed's veteran cinematographer Robert Krasker's quirky angles under Reed's direction perfectly framed the ready-made-for-an-art designer bombed out shadows and stark, isolated street lights of post-war Vienna and its underworld. Unique to cinema history the whole score (but for some canned incidental cafe music) was just the brilliant zither playing of Anton Karas, adding his nuances to every dramatic transition. Krasker won an Oscar, and Karas was nominated.

The "Third Man Theme" (also known as the "Harry Lime Theme") is alternately brittle, jaunty, bittersweet, romantic, wry, and even sardonic piece of music--which fits the mood of the story and the film perfectly -- that, once heard, can't be forgotten.

The "Third Man Theme" turned Anton Karas into a wealthy man after 28 years of toiling in obscurity an relative poverty in Vienna.

One night, Carol Reed was passing by a wine tavern where growers offer their own wines for sale directly, and heard Anton Karas's playing in the background. Reed had never heard a zither before and found the sound to be attractive. He approached Karas and persuaded him to play for him at his hotel, and made a recording, which Reed brought back to the studio to test. He liked the effect when the zither's sound was placed against the recorded dialogue and, ignoring the protests of many around him, hired Karas and brought him to London for 12 weeks.

Anton Karas screened the movie hundreds of times, devising music for each scene. The Third Man ended up with a vast amount of music, scored in virtually every scene of its 104 minutes. Ironically, the piece that became known as the "Third Man Theme" was something that Anton Karas had written two decades earlier and hadn't played in over 15 years. As he later explained to Reed, playing the zither for a whole night for tips was hard work, and one tended to play the easiest pieces the most often, to save the fingers.

Other zither players never got it to sound just right. The truth was that as recorded for the movie, "The Third Man Theme" was one of the first practical examples of overdubbing on a hit record, rivaling Les Paul's work--Anton Karas had gotten just the right effect working underneath Reed's kitchen table, and had gotten the piece just right by recording and mixing more than one zither part.

The Third Man was finished and prepared for release, and Reed and the production company, London Films, tried to raise interest in it through the music. None of the record companies, however, was interested in recording Karas or releasing the "Third Man Theme." The music was too strange and different, and although British movies had produced some soundtrack successes in the past, those were usually more conventional light classical pieces, not a jangly piece of music played on a central European folk instrument.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant "ethnic" melodies.......2007-01-22

The tunes on this disc have a nice, comforting sound. Some of the selections are haunting, some have a peasant-liveliness. Nothing great or revolutionary, but plain good zither music, very enjoyable.

We bought it for a friend. They loved it.

4 out of 5 stars The first man of the zither.......2006-03-10

The CD didn't sound as good as the movie sound track. Ity sounded a bit rushed as if the sampling during the transfer was not sufficient

You've been looking for the original version of the music in "The Third Man", right? Every other CD on the market wouldn't work for you. But lucky for you, this is the one! Don't go wrong.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2006-04-08

Difficult to add to Erika's review but, yes, it is a marvelous album and I agree entirely with her on this great album. This is my second album with Ross Daly and the ensemble he has created here shows the force of his influence: there is the attention to being musicologically-historically accurate, perhaps, and in this respect the music in always "under control", perhaps to some listeners even "cold", but the important thing is that the musicianship is impeccable and precise, with great taste and (unfortunately, to my liking) restraint.

This sounds a lot like a classic turkish/ottoman album and is therefore not really a greek album, and certainly not your usual rembetika album in any way. This exercise in style (recreating a theoretical atmosphere of circa 1925 athens) is extremely tricky and it is clear that Daly and friends have assimilated countless musical styles to achieve this balance. You can hear the sufi influences in the slower numbers (especially with the delicious sound of the ney); you hear the turkish maqams/modes. And the mixture of instruments is masterful (oud, ney, kemance, kanun, bendir plus the occasional klarnet).

Now, about Niki Tramba: first of all I don't understand greek (and can't say anything about the tone with respect to the text) but I find she sings really well, she is in control of the material. But she, like the others, is not having a party here, it remains a polite affair.

I would have liked more exuberance, more out-of-control flights. Still, this is a highly recommended album for fans of turkish and greek music. This album is a small authentic no-compromise gem in the middle of otherwise sappy-commercial-pop-middle-east trashy productions.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic Interpretation of Smyrneika (Music of Asia Minor).......2004-03-23

Niki Tramba, Ross Daly, and the musicians known as Labyrinth (Socrates Sinopoulos, Giorgios Marinakis, Angela Stathopoulou plus Ruth & Simon Hill) have revived some of the most exciting and spirited Greek music alive today. They learned to play music within the modal system (dromoi) on traditional instruments, the kanun, kemence, ney, bendir, darbuka, oud, and woodent spoons, along with the clarinet and violin. They have given birth to the music played in Constantinopole, Smyrna, Cappodocia and other regions of Turkey, where Greeks, Armenians, Jews and Sufis shared a musical culture for many centuries. Some of the rhythms and melodies date back to ancient times, when court musicians played similar music forthe Sultans or Viziers. The Oriental connection is the golden thread which links the music to the past. Within the past 100 years, at times it was despised and even out-lawed, defined as music of the lower class, the underworld, even criminals and not without a grain of truth. The pendulum swings in both directions and the music is currently viewed as uniquely important to contemporaty Greek folk culture.
This CD provides the listener some of the very best modern interpretations of traditional 'cafe aman' style ever produced.

This CD contains highly ornamental poetic lyrical verse called, "ghazals" in Turkish and "amanedhes" in Greek. These verses express the full spectrum of human emotions ... joy, sorrow, tenderness, courage, dignity, and laments about the loss of honor and pride. They are nostalgic pieces sung with plaintive sincerity and poignancy ... Niki Tramba emulates the late great female singers of this genre from the past, Marika Papagika, Rita Abatzi, and Roza Eskanazi. Her passionate soulful expressions of emotion are distinctly natural and sincere. The listener is transported to a time when feelings of vulnerabilty expressed through music were spontaneous and real. The era was filled with uncertainty and political instability. Spiritual expression in song was a means of survival in a world filled with uncertainty and doubt. This music is highly expressive and emotional. It has unique characteristics of rhythm, voice, and instrumentation. It is an acquired taste ... if the listener does not already belong to the culture of origin. Listener beware --- once the taste is acquired, you will never be the same. It will become an appetite, an addiction, a desire that can not be totally satisfied. You will definitely want to hear more of this style of music ... Erika Borsos (erikab93)
