Designed as "a conduit to ecstasy," Africa North is an aural ascension into realms beyond the ordinary. From Moroccan Said Chraibi's elegantly orchestral "Andalusian Oud Music, Parts 1 & 2" to Mahmoud Fadl's Egyptian-tinged percussion on "Maqsoum" to the Sudanese and pan-African inflections of vocalist Setona, Africa North showcases the intermingling of cultures and sound born of the seventh-century Muslim invasions. These Islamic songs feature oud (lute), drums, oboe, and strings as well as a light smattering of electronic sounds. They descend in spirit from a rich oral tradition from teacher to student and guru to disciple, bearing stamps of the musicians' forebears as well as their distinctly original signature noting this time of radical change in the face of tradition. Exotic and heavy with fervor, Africa North is a journey well worth making. --Paige La Grone

While not yet part of mainstream American music, Middle Eastern music, as evidenced by the rise of Algerian pop star Khaled in France, has sidled up to other club music forms in the hot spots of Paris, London, and elsewhere. To that end, Putumayo's Arabic Groove brings us up to date with their compilation, a jubilant sonic party rooted in ancient musical tradition and structure, steeped in the au courant flavors of hip-hop, R&B, and other urban western forms. Lebanese, Egyptian, Moroccan, and Algerian artists such as former Londoner Natacha Atlas (who has been featured with both Transglobal Underground and Jah Wobble) contribute 11 songs which lend themselves to sensual dance, exotic drink, and glamorous gatherings of multicultural hipsters. Traditional Arabic instruments such as the flute and oud blend with guitar, bass, and drums, laying down plenty of funk, fun, and full-on booty-shaking rhythms. A heady high point is the disco-nomad jam "Leiley," a Transglobal Underground remix of a hit by Lebanese songstress Dania. Arabic Groove is a feast of a sampler. --Paige La GroneCustomer Reviews:

You'd be forgiven if, after listening to North African Groove, the seventh release in Putumayo's dance floor-ready "Groove" series, you imagined that the world was getting smaller. In highlighting the diversity in contemporary Arabic music, the 12 eclectic tracks here gather influences from far beyond North Africa--from the Gypsy Kings-style flamenco touches of Egyptian Amr Diab's "Nour Al Ain" to the old-style Cuban salsa of Jomed's "Montuno Noreno" to the French-style accordion that enlivens the funky Rai of Cheb Mami's "Viens Habibi." Of course, this being a compilation with "Groove" in the title, most everything has club beats that could come from anywhere, although everything is filtered through a North African lens. A case in point is Rai--the backbeat-heavy style from Algeria that mixes American funk with Arabic instruments and melodies and which is ably represented here by Algerian superstar Khaled's "Aicha" and "Ya-Rayi," as well as the less familiar (to Western ears, anyway) Rhany and Faudel. Perhaps most surprising though is the link bared between North Africa and Latin America--which might seem unexpected until one considers the Moorish influence on Spanish music and the Spanish influence on Latin music, proving that no, the world isn't getting smaller: it's always been that way. --Ezra GaleAlbum Description
With the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Sahara Desert to the south, North Africa serves as a crossroad between many cultures. The Atlantic coast of Morocco forms the Western boundary of North Africa and the Suez Canal in Egypt its eastern end. Most of North Africa is known as the Maghreb and includes the countries of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. Egypt, which is generally considered part of the Middle East, is geographically part of North Africa.Echoes of ancient history can still be heard in the rhythms and melodies of North Africa's popular music. While electronic drum beats, disco and funk-inspired grooves, hip-hop and other Western influences are clearly apparent in the modern music of the region, traditional instrumentation, singing techniques and melodies play an important role in defining the local sound.
The two best known types of popular music from North Africa are raï and al-jil. Raï means "opinion" in Arabic, and it developed in the Algerian port city of Oran in the 1950s and 60s. Raï is the North African equivalent of rock and roll and is now popular throughout the Maghreb and in Arabic communities around the world. Al-jil is Egyptian party music. While raï and al-jil still form the core of popular North African music, Moroccan Gnawa trance, Touareg blues, Berber folk and Afro-Nubian rhythms are some of the exotic local flavors that have influenced the region's music.
In recent years, the French cities of Paris and Marseilles have become important production centers for North African music, and many popular artists are beginning to create songs that target their own communities as well as a wider French market. Meanwhile, European DJs and producers have collaborated with artists from the region, and the influences of electronica and European club music are ever more evident.

A Middle Eastern mixed bag.......2006-09-27
Where does that put "North African Groove"?Somewhere in the middle. It's neither an absolute bore, but it's better combined with other Arabic albums and put on random shuffle.
Jomed's opening "Montuno Noreno" spicily combines Cuban&North African music,as well as electric effects.Samira Saeid's "Aal Eah" is a great dance song;she's the Moroccan equivalent of Britney Spears, but MUCH better.Amina's "Dis-Moi Pourquoi" has a great beat.Cheb Jilani's "Bahebbak"is a danceable love song.Hamid Baroudi's "Sidi" is disappointing;it's repetitive&dull, unlike his "Caravan II Baghdad" on Putumayo's out-of-print "New World Party" as well as his mesmerizing "Trance Dance" on Putumayo's still in print "World Lounge."Khaled's "Ya-Rayi" shows the "King of Rai" in top form. It's infectious.Cheb Mami's "Viens Habibi" is alright, but the "Prince of Rai" has done much, much better on his albums "Meli Meli"&"Saida." In this song, his sound is too Westernized;it fit in Sting's "Desert Rose" (his ululations made that song exotic),but this time his music is rendered dull.Mohamed Mounir's "Hanina" is excellent, bringing in Nubian rhyth,s.If you're curious,a remix of it by Jasmon is on Putumayo's "Sahara Lounge." It was interesting on my 5-CD player to first hear the Jasmon remix of "Hanina",then the original, thinking,"I've heard this before!"
"North African Groove" is a good introduction to Arabic music. If you want to hear some GREAT Arabic music, listen to Natacha Atlas and Cheb Mami. It's a musical world worth exploring.

When Sting collaborated with Cheb Mami on the Brand New Day track "Desert Rose," he created a surprising demand for Arabic crossover pop. This collection provides a suitable next stop for those whose taste was whetted by that collaboration. Egyptian singer Natacha Atlas opens the album with "Mon Amie la Rose," a maudlin little French tune she twists through her wringer until it is utterly transformed. "Desert Rose" turns up as a frisky remix by Victor Calderone, while Rachid Taha and the trance choir, B'Net Marrakech, appear in the compelling, orchestrated "Qalantica." Mami is heard on his own on one tune, but is eclipsed by the gut-shredding Khaled, the undisputed king of Algerian rai. The harder-edged electronic outings are standouts, while the tracks that are the Arabic equivalent of adolescent pop don't hold up nearly as well. This compilation, however, mostly eschews the dross in favor of tunes that go the distance. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:
Mix down the vocals, and maybe.......2007-06-04
Kind of disappointing.......2007-02-02
I also loved that Desert Rose song and the amazing voice of Cheb Mami with Sting.
I bought this CD expecting a sexy "One Thousand and One Nights" music style, or a good fusion of traditional and modern sounds, but instead, what I got was a KITSCH POP version of arabic songs.
Some of the songs are just bad taste, you just want to forward them as quickly as possible.
I should have guessed just by the look of the cover. It reflects the music as well. The painting might be nice, but the mix with the modern computer added photo image and the strange balls of roses just don't work well together. The same goes for the songs.
I don't recommend it, unless you're looking for cheesy disposable pop.
Mediocre Middle Eastern collection.......2006-12-21
1)A remix of Cheb Mami&Sting's hit song "Desert Rose." It's very danceable, and in sync with the spirit of the original.Cheb Mami and Sting had one of those rare great celebrity duets. They powerfully melded their styles, making something wonderful.
2)Khaled is always great. His songs are never a disappointment--no wonder he's called the King of Rai.
3)Amina's "Dis Moi Pourquoi" is an excellent dancefloor song.It was a hit in France, and musically,it works. It's French chanson meeting Tunisian pop.
4)Speaking of French chanson,Natacha Atlas radically re-imagines Edith Piaf's "Mon amie la rose",transforming it from a Gallic weepie into a sensual Arabic serenade.
5)Hakim,who is considered a prince of rai,has a great song.
6)Cheb Mami's "Hay wadi hay galbi" is amazing. While Khaled is almost Arabic R&B,and Hakim is a Middle Eastern boy band sort, this song shows off Cheb Mami's musical gymnastics. It's quite stunning. After hearing this,I got his "Saida" album.
Instead of getting this,I reccomend Putumayo's "Sahara Lounge" (its best Middle Eastern compilation)and "Arabic Groove." "Desert Roses" has a half-dozen hits, the rest are forgettable. If you like Middle Eastern music, explore Putumayo's compilations instead.

A source of passion.......2006-10-26
With Peter Gabriel's name on it, this CD probably introduced more westerners to non-western music than any other CD at the time. Subsequently, Gabriel's "Real World" records aimed to dampen the dominance of western music throughout the globe. The label continues to this day. "Passion Sources" was its very appropriate first official release.
The CD begins with an absolute bang: the spectacular Qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan from Pakistan. Khan quickly became Real World's best selling artist. Sadly, he passed away in 1997 after gaining a worldwide reputation. He even appeared in Rolling Stone (a definite first for a Qawwali singer). As Khan's song slowly fades, Baaba Maal's amazing performance of the traditional Islamic call to prayer takes its place. Other highlights include Shankar's frenetic double violin bowing, Fatala's equally energetic drumming, Nass El Ghiwane's contemplative "Ya Sah", and the utterly relaxing "Song of Complaint" which sounds more like "Song of Relaxation." Another future Real World act, The Musicians of the Nile, also play up a storm.
Though overall an enjoyable listen, this collection does present somewhat of a mixed bag. As such, it plays more as a compliation than as a coherent thematic unity. That in no way detracts from the amazing music it contains or its ability to open up ears to new musical styles. Regardless, fans of "Passion" should not expect more of the same from this CD. Though most will probably enjoy everything here mainly because it contains the inspiration that led Gabriel to compose his soundtrack masterpiece. But best of all, "Passion Sources" will hopefully inspire an openness to the music of other cultures and of the world at large.
Moments of greatness.......2002-11-03
' being prime examples with such a fresh flavour to them, even after repeated listening. Yet whilst taken at their own merit, it still has the feel of a compilation, and it's perhaps best to look at the album as a taster record for each artist. Whilst it in no way compares to Passion proper, it is still a welcome addition to any music collection, and avoids the uneasy 'fusion' flaw that dogs too many Realworld releases.
One of many sources of Oriental music.......2002-05-23
I enjoy both of them.
I used to just enjoy this album when I bought it a few years ago but after September 11, this album has had a new meaning to me and in fact has helped me rid myself of the hatred that I had of that part of the world and has actually made me even more fascinated with that area of the world.
I just wish people would stop hating on The Middle East and southern Asia and check out some of the awe inspiring music that musicians make.
Just the song Call To Prayer by Baaba Maal proves that the Middle East isn't a place of terror and hate but a place of wonderous musicians who could really give America a boost in it's music scene and end the corporate commercialism that has ruined Americas musical image.
Believe me this album after last years horrific events has been like a medicine and helped me maintain my respect for the Middle East plus I also happen to love music from the Middle East.
I hope I didn't stray too far off the topic of this CD but I just wanted to voice how this album helped me through this turbulent time. Believe me I alway prefer the Middle Eastern chanting anytime over the staccato of that awful Swedish Pop of Britney Spears.
God Bless both America and The Middle East
Music of the Orient.......2002-03-05
Overall, this is an excellent and diverse CD. The music on here, which saw use in "The Last Temptation of Christ" is wonderful and inspirational, whether from Christian (such as Ethiopian or Armenian) or Muslim (such as Pakistani or Egyptian) sources. It is beautiful and wonderful. I cannot say enough good things about this CD.

Brian Jones's trip to Morocco in 1968 included a trip to the mountain village of Jajouka guided by painter Brion Gysin. What he recorded there introduced the world at large to the Master Musicians of Jajouka, initially released in 1971. Their music is based on ritual, but is still playful. The horns, chanting, and drums of this field recording are completely trancelike. It's a shame that phasing and panning has been added to the sound in an attempt to make it even more psychedelic because it stands perfectly well by itself without the effects. (You also have to wonder whether titles like "Your Eyes Are Like a Cup of Tea" are really literal translations from Aramaic). Still, this is perfectly classic stuff, celebrating the weeklong Rites of Pan festival and offering an almost religious experience to the listener. Anyone who doubts that music has the power to transport should begin here. A classic of world music. --Chris NicksonCustomer Reviews:

Take Me With You, My Beloved.......2004-02-25
This music will scare ... many people. Others will be annoyed. Other people will fall in love with it, as I did. To hear this music as it is meant to be heard, you have to give yourself over to it completely, in whatever way that is best accomplished for you. Then you will abe able to hear the relationships of the repeated patterns in the 3 or 4 musical layers. These relationships can be extraordinarily complex, but sound as beautiful as a living arabesque unfolding itself would appear to the eyes.
The purpose of this music is to take you away. You can only find out where you are going if you take the journey.
A fitting memorial to Brian.......2003-02-26
The sounds made in this album send chills up my spine. This album reminds us that not only is the world stranger than we know, it is weirder than we CAN know. Everything is True. Nothing is Forbidden. These tapes will cause cold winds to blow through the canyons of your mind. The state of Pan is that of "Panic", and that is what you hear in these "songs."
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards caused this album to be posthumously released after Brian Jones unfortunate drowning/murder in the swimming pool of the house where A.A. Milne wrote Winnie-the-Pooh. Brian recorded these tapes several months before his death, intending to release them.
The Master Musicians.......2002-09-28
The music is part of an ancient festival that has been linked by anthropologists to the Roman Lupercalia and the truly ancient prehistoric festivals of pan. It celebrates an ancient, pagan-Muslum tradition in the Moroccan village of Jajouka that is detailed in the linear notes by Gysin and Jones. You need to be prepared to appreciate the anthropological context of this music to enjoy it (and although Brian was on a different plane of reality when he recorded this music, he did have a genuine appreciation of the cultural context, as did Keith when he worked with the Master Musicians of Jajouka many years later).

An Eastern Odyssey.......2006-08-28
This CD is right up my alley, and if your a fan of DJ Cheb-i-Sabbah, Natacha Atlas, Asian Dub Foundation, Toires, Najma Akhtar and such, you'll probably enjoy it too. It's mostly Asian and Middle Eastern dance music, with a bit of Afro-pop thrown in for good measure. The beautiful vocals of Natacha Atlas and Najma Akhtar stand beside the Turkish hiphop of Makale, techno-sufi music from Gnawa Impulse and the mellow New Age sounds of Trilok Gurtu and Paul Horn. Asian Underground beats from Asian Dub Foundation sit comfortably next to the Maghrebi techno of Toires and Afro-pop from Sekouba Bamino and Sangoma, Suzan Hendricks and the Traditional Healers. And of course a couple tracks from the master himself, DJ Cheb-i-Sabbah. As others have said, its like taking an odyssey across India, the Middle East and Africa.
If your a fan of this sort of music, then this CD is well worth the buy. Over an hour of music, covering a variety of moods and tastes. Your bound to like at least some of the songs, and exploring new music is always a good thing. I often find myself including this CD in my iPod for long car trips because it just puts me in a good mood. If you appreciate this CD, then I suggest you check out Cheb-i-Sabbah's other works. His great triology (Sri Durga, Maha Maya and Krishna Lila) comprises subtle, organic remixes of classical Indian music, both Hinudstani and Carnatic. La Kahena (and the recently released remix album) focuses on his own Maghrebi roots in Algeria and Morroco, and stands out as one of the best CDs I've ever heard. Very impressive stuff, at least in my opinion. So do yourself a favor and check out this CD.
Sabbah's Mosaic.......2005-02-20
The variety is really the main strength and the main weakness of this disc. The overall range is much wider than on DJ Cheb's own albums, but in the process it inevitably loses some of the cohesion that he pulls off so well. Part of what makes his own work so special is his way of blending so many elements into a unified whole that goes beyond the individual traditions it touches on. Here, each piece is its own entity and they're all different.
Much of the disc is still world-beat-techno, if you need some kind of label (inadequate though it is), livened up with some fascinating detours. "Colour Line" is club-dance applied to a political statement. "Have We Lost Our Dream?" crosses beautiful atmospherics with some of the most passionate singing to be heard in the course of this hour-long trip. "Pour Matoub" is transcendental ambience as Sabbah's done it so well elsewhere. "Salla" is African hip-hop (the only one I really don't like); "Neti-Neti" has an almost free-jazz touch courtesy of Don Cherry's flavorful trumpet; "Sinikan" is based around a tribal chant with a sunny tropical bent. And so on, and so on, a new surprise around every corner.
Even though I don't think As Far As is quite as strong as Cheb's other offerings, it complements them extremely well. It's a different way of looking at the same larger picture.. and of course expanding vision & boundaries is what this music's about in the first place. Recommended, but preferably after you've discovered Shri Durga and Krishna Lila first.
Not a smooth mix.......2005-02-06
I'd still recomend this album as a great journey unto ito itself, but as one of 5 downtempo CD's in the changer, you'll find it sticks out.
I have all this guy's releases and I think he is doing some great work, I can't wait to see what he does next
Atmospheric & Eclectic.......2004-08-10
DJ Cheb i Sabbah mixes these songs together with artistry, and his musical selection is inspired. It's not any kind of "typical" mix- the songs defy any really strict classification. You have Maghreb rap in French, a traditional Berber recording, and then techno beats and some crazy drum & bass tossed in for good measure... There's a sampling of music from every part of the western Muslim world. Some may feel this album is too eclectic or lacks focus. I say it reflects both the diversity and the complexity of the modern Muslim experience, and underlines the reality that this music comes from a region of cultures caught in a delicate balancing act between tradition and modernity. Very enjoyable. I highly recommend it.

The introductory album to what is an ongoing series on the music of Ethiopia from the '60s and '70s features a variety of vocal and instrumental tracks from artists mostly unfamiliar to Western audiences. This brief period of liberated creativity before a military shutdown yielded an astonishing burst of creativity, melding the traditions of Ethiopia (geographically and culturally straddling Africa and the Middle East) with R&B and European pop in unexpected ways. Loping rhythms merge with Memphis-style horns, wheezy Farfisa organs, and quavering but passionate vocals that at times shimmer with brilliance. Early tracks by superstar Mahmoud Ahmed merge with rarities like the stunning Teshome Meteku, whose career spanned only four tracks total. Ending with the biggest ever hit, Getatchew Kassa's "Tezeta" (5,000 copies sold), this will leave you wanting more, as will the wonderful and comprehensive liner notes. --Derek RathCustomer Reviews:
