    Album Description

Superb 8-track audio CD and short film DVD package. Strictly limited edition of 4,000 individually numbered copies in deluxe gatefold card packaging. The EP includes the first recordings by A HAWK AND A HACKSAW (duo ft. former NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL drummer JEREMY BARNES) and THE HUN HANG R ENSEMBLE, a group of extraordinarily talented Hungarian folk musicians. The songs are both traditional (Hungarian, Romanian, Serbian and klezmer) and AHAAH originals. The 20-minute bonus DVD, 'An Introduction To A Hawk And A Hacksaw', documents the last two years of travelling and performing throughout Europe and the United States. The EP follows the highly acclaimed 'The Way The Wind Blows' album from late 2006, their most successful yet, and is a precursor for AHAAH's fourth album.

Apparently being part of Beirut has had quite an influence on A Hawk and a Hacksaw. In third album "The Way the Wind Blows," this quirky Balkan-electro-psychfolk band gets even more into their sound... and by that, I mean less electro and psychfolk. Not typical Elephant 6 fare, but good.

It opens with "In the River," a swooning ballad crammed with accordion and horns... which changes tempo into an entirely different kind of song. It's followed by the title track, a bittersweet fiddle tune that wanders through the slow accordion tune. It sounds like a gypsy fiddler who got left behind, and is lamenting about it via music.

They continue that sound through the next song, only to burst into a raucous little dance number in the bouncy "Fernando's Giampari," and the urgent swirling "God Bless the Ottoman Empire," with its chorus of voices. There are tuba waltzes, yearning fiddle ballads, bouncy Balkan party tunes, and accordion foot-tappers.

Seriously, A Hawk and a Hacksaw has always been a bit of an oddball "Elephant 6er," even now that the collective has collapsed. Rather than fuzzy psychedelica or sparkling oddball tunes, this band veers more towards Eastern-European traditional sounds, with some keyboard mixed in.

And "The Way the Wind Blows" is probably the heaviest on traditional sounds, with keyboard and psychedelica minimized in favor of... accordion, male choruses, and swirling instrumentals. It's heady, earthy music, although it never stops being just a wee bit melancholy, even in the happier numbers.

Instrumentation is pretty straightforward -- lots of accordion and fiddle, by Neutral Milk Hotel percussionsist Jeremy Barnes (who is, I think, a little mad) and Heather Trost. While there isn't much that's "psychedelic" about this music, it does seem to swirl and shimmer. And instead of typical vocals, the music is crammed with unintelligible chants, cheers and other such noises.

A Hawk and a Hacksaw continues to be the Balkan-psychfolk oddball, but it's fun to listen to. And "The Way the Wind Blows" is definitely worth hearing for anyone entranced by Beirut.

    5 out of 5 stars .......2006-10-05

The Moon Under the Water has one of the most disorienting moments in music that I can recall, a brilliant abrupt change from gypsy sound to mariachi and then back that fits so perfectly within the context of the piece. It is just such a shocking shift, and so satisfying to hear the strings go to trumpets and build together.

Really intense, cinematic album. Your friends might think you are crazy though. It's worth it.

    3 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2006-03-15

I bought this album from Amazon because I heard it was an Elephant 6 Project. Then I read more about it and they said it was like Gypsy-Oompa music so I had to try it out.

When I got it, I didn't listen to it for a few days. When I finally listened to it I realized it wasn't as great as I expected it to be, but still not bad at all.

I give it 3 stars because it's very different but yet not too different. Meaning it was as groundbreaking as I thought it would be.

    5 out of 5 stars gypsy madness.......2005-07-14

accordion squeeze box with ivory piano keys. giant blazing suns (and the heat of it all!) beating through your skull to your brain to your mind. in time with gypsy rhythms. forced bouts of dancing provoked by tracks two and wicky pocky. visual disturbances. watch out. do not operate heavy machinery while listening to jeremy barnes bust out melodies on the hammond b-3, piano, accordion or turkish cumbus. eery surreal haunted house for slavoj. brilliant. beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars With his thoughts, he makes the world.......2006-03-16

Jeremy Barnes definitely deserves an honor seat in the world of indie quirk-rock, as evidenced by the self-titled debut of his one-man superband Hawk and a Hacksaw. In this album, Barnes wrestles a bunch of instruments into making playful, wildly creative music, full of cartoonish whimsy.

Barnes usually starts off with a rooster crowing, followed by an offbeat piano melody that builds up slowly, getting more and more complicated before the drums kick in. And then those rattling noises. The first song "Maremaillette" ends up being swamped by a bright array of instruments, until the piano is only a part of the background.

The following songs tend to be catchy piano-based songs, cute and kooky and bright, such as the chaotically catchy "Hack and a Handsaw," which decides halfway through that it wants to be an accordian song. At the middle of the album, becomes a bit folkier and slower, with "Quand le Son Devient Aigu, Jeter la Girafe a la Mer" sounding a bit like a smoky saloon song. And it ends on a more experimental number, with the cut-short finale "With Our Thoughts We Make the World."

When it's spawned from the likes of Olivia Tremor Control and Neutral Milk Hotel, a band has a lot to live up to. And Hawk and a Hacksaw actually seems to be doing just that -- Barnes doesn't strain to sound cool, overly complex or avant-garde. Instead, the album feels whimsical and relaxed, while blurring the borders between French folk, piano-rock and the experimental weirdness of Elephant 6's other bands.

There are a few flaws -- Barnes plays the piano too fast at times, which made me think of the Keystone Cops bumbling around the place. But the composition is pure brilliance.. Barnes will suddenly rip a melody down and reassemble it with different instruments, all in the same song. The next-to-last song is perhaps the most brilliant, an orchestral sweep of bright, flawed beauty.

Even if it is sometimes too fast, the piano melodies are speedy and always building up so... something. And even better: Barnes accents his piano and percussion with a glorious collage of offbeat instruments: poultry like geese and ducks, spoons, accordians, kazoos, horns, xylophone, distortions, electronic burps and who knows what else.

Barnes creates a few dozen new genres with his tap-your-foot-till-it-hurts psychedelic folk-pop. No matter how many things he crams into "Hawk and a Hacksaw," it never sounds random -- just roughly but lovingly assembled.
