To the "Fab Four" From Liverpool...A Tribute From India

Editorial Reviews

Madooo seriously alters 'I Saw Her Standing There', creating a dance-rock version reminiscent of the Power Station.

Product Description
The Most Unique BEATLE Tribute Album You'll Ever Hear!! A MUST for BEATLE fans! This album consists of unique arrangements of 12 Beatle songs in a fantastic blend of the East and West. All tracks are licensed by Harry Fox Agency in New York. A very unique tribute because of the Indian flavor it has. Powerful vocals, east-Indian percussion instruments and sitars ring out loud throughout this album.

These are some recent reviews & comments.

"You have done a great job of your interpretations... It looks like you are a very good part of the global scene in a very big way to me... Congratulations... It is a great contribution to the fab four's legacy..." – Richie Havens

"This album is incredible...an Indian music-salute to The Beatles" – Archer from 99.5 The Mountain’s ‘Breakfast With The Beatles’, CO, USA

"We DID play it a couple of weeks back - great job! I will stay in touch. Thanks, Madooo! Love" – Kenneth Dashow, Q-104.3 (New York’s Classic Rock Station)

"Greetings Madooo, my friend: Interviewing you and playing tracks from ‘To the Fab Four from Liverpool... A Tribute from India’ on KMSU fm was a real pleasure, for both Gully and me. Its definitely one of the highlights of my fifteen years, as host of the World Beat."– Mark R. Thomas, World Beat host/producer: KMSU/KMSK FM - The Maverick Radio Network

"Hey Madooo, the "Tribute" was doing well here. New releases have 2 months during which we chart & report & your record placed into the Top 20 on at least one of our reports to CMJ! The "Tribute" is now in our regular library -- for now it's filing in the International section, but I may create a section specifically for covers & tributes which will make it easier for DJs to locate it in the years to come. Thanks & congratulations." – Matthew Finch: KUNM Music Department

What fun! This soundtrack of the film adaptation of the Broadway musical overflows with glossy, ol' fashioned '60s-style pep. It won't win any awards for innovation, but it may well be one of the most feel-good releases of the year. While not quite as super-energetic as the original Broadway cast, the new crew ain't too shabby: Nikki Blonsky delivers as Tracy Turnblad and Zac Efron (High School Musical) makes for a devoted boyfriend, and the supporting cast gleefully embraces the show's silly-but-generous spirit. John Travolta (who gets to utter the particularly ironic line "it's been years since someone asked me to dance") goes drag as Tracy's mom, Edna, while Michelle Pfeiffer's slight stiffness is appropriate for her uptight character, especially on the cha-cha "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs." After Mama Morton in Chicago, Queen Latifah puts in another brassy turn as Motormouth Maybelle ("Big, Blonde and Beautiful," which is then reprised by Travolta and Pfeiffer). The show's authors, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, have written three new numbers for the movie: the rollicking (and first single) "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far." In addition, the CD also includes two tracks that aren't in the film but were in the show: "Cooties," sung by Aimee Allen, and "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now," sung by all three Tracy Turnblads: Blonsky, Ricki Lake (from the source movie) and Marissa Jaret Winokur (from the original Broadway cast). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

The Hairspray soundtrack will feature 17 songs from the film, including three original numbers that were created specifically for the film version of the hit Broadway musical - "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl In Town," and "Come So Far." Also featured on the soundtrack are the songs "Good Morning Baltimore," "Welcome to the `60s," "Nicest Kids In Town," and "You Can't Stop The Beat." The songs are performed by cast members John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Amanda Bynes, Brittany Snow and Elijah Kelley among others.

The Hairspray soundtrack is produced by Marc Shaiman and features music by Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman. It features tracks mixed by Ed Cherney (Rolling Stones, Bette Midler) and Peter Mokran (Pussycat Dolls, Christina Aguilera).

Sixteen years after the release of the original film, New Line Cinema is bringing a feature film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Hairspray to life. Featuring new and original material based on John Waters' 1988 cult classic about star-struck teenagers on a local Baltimore dance show, the comedy features a remarkable collection of talent including John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, Allison Janney, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron, Elijah Kelley, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Chicago), and director Adam Shankman (Bringing Down The House). The new screenplay for Hairspray was written by Leslie Dixon (Freaky Friday, Outrageous Fortune).

5 out of 5 stars The legacy continues.......2007-08-07

Whatever slight problems I have with this cinematic adaptation of the show, they are not reflected in the excellent soundtrack. I don't think there's been any musical soundtrack as much fun and catchy since "Grease" nearly thirty years ago. (Sorry, "Grease 2" fans, if there are any.) The orchestrations, pitch, vocals - everything is right on target. (Though there were a few times I was afraid John Travolta would lose his voice...) Nikki Blonsky does a wonderful job as Tracy Turnblad, and there can't be enough said about Queen Latifah's vocals. Zac Efron and Elijah Kelley also do great work. I thought I was starting to get over the "get off your butt and dance" feeling, but I must say this proved me wrong.

As for the "Grease" and "Grease 2" connection, how fun is it that we now have Travolta and Pfeiffer facing off in the same movie musical? Pfeiffer can finally put to rest the demons of "Cool Rider" as she more than acquits herself with her great version of "Miss Baltimore Crabs."

The new songs for the movie, including "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far" are great, and while "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now" was cut, the version here with the Three Tracy's: Blonsky, Winokur and the inimitable Ricki Lake, more than makes up for its absence from the main action of the film. This soundtrack is one of the best antidotes for the long, hot summer.

Bought it for my daughters birthday, loves it, loves the film and hopes next year to produce it at our Local Drama Company. Brillant music.

5 out of 5 stars A real "FEEL GOOD" movie/soundtrack.......2007-08-04

I love movies....for a variety of reasons, sometimes for their throught-provoking abilities, innovation, story...and while "Hairspray" isn't one of those, I must say I haven't seen a movie that made me FEEL GOOD and energetic and just HAPPY in a very long time!! It's one I could watch over and over... and the soundtrack.. it's number one on my playlist right now! It will have you dancing in your seat!

4 out of 5 stars Really fun.......2007-08-01

This is good music with good singing. Not necessarily great singing. These songs are catchy and if you liked the movie you will enjoy having the music to sing all too!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully fun.......2007-08-01

After seeing the movie my sister and I ran out to buy the soundtrack. It's excellent. the vocal talent they've managed to put together is amazing. Nikki Blonsky is fantastic and her enthusiasm can't be contained. Zac Efron finally gets to redeem himself after not having his vocals used in High School Musical. "Ladies' Choice" is really fun and upbeat. I can't say enough good things about Queen Latifah.

In my opinion Elijah Kelly is the best though. What a great find. "Run and Tell That" showcases his enormous talent.

The cd is great for singing along to and for making you feel good.

From Amazon.co.uk

Amy Winehouse's second album, Back to Black, is one of the finest soul albums, British or otherwise, to come out for years. Frank, her first album, was a sparse and stripped-down affair; Back to Black, meanwhile, is neither of these things. This time around, she's taken her inspiration from some of the classic 1960's girl groups like the Supremes and the Shangri-Las, a sound particularly suited to her textured vocal delivery, while adding a contemporary songwriting sensibility. With the help of producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, "Rehab" becomes a gospel-tinged stomp, while the title track (and album highlight) is a heartbreaking musical tribute to Phil Spector, with it's echoey bass drum, rhythmic piano, chimes, saxophone and close harmonies. Best of all, though, is the fact that Back to Black bucks the current trend in R&B by being unabashedly grown-up in both style and content. Winehouse's lyrics deal with relationships from a grown-up perspective, and are honest, direct and, often, complicated: on "You Know I'm No Good", she's unapologetic about her unfaithfulness. But she can also be witty, as on "Me & Mrs Jones" when she berates a boyfriend with "You made me miss the Slick Rick gig". Back to Black is a refreshingly mature soul album, the best of its kind for years. --Ted Kord

Album Description

Hailed by Newsweek Magazine as a cross between Billie Holiday and Lauryn Hill, British soul singer Amy Winehouse's U.S. debut, Back To Black hits the US amid a flurry of accolades, radio and TV buzz unprecedented in recent years for a young siren.

Her brassy mix of emotive vocals tinged with 60's girl-group stylings, sly funk, and anguished jazz, sparked the New York Daily News to crown Back To Black a "marvelous debut that would do Etta James proud" while New Yorker Magazine called her "a fierce English performer whose voice combines the smoky depths of a jazz chanteuse with the heated passion of a soul singer," and Spin Magazine affirming "there's never been A British star quite like her."

Back To Black smolders with a bristling fusion of old school doo-wop/soul inflected uprisings, (the charismatic singer/songwriter wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album) brewing instant classics such as the Shirley Ellis influenced "Rehab," the Supremes tinged title song "Back To Black," the aching "Wake Up Alone," and the album's closer, "Addicted."

4 out of 5 stars Very good, I wouldn't say Great necessarily.......2007-08-06

A good Cd it truly is, but it's kind of short. About 10 tracks maybe. This Cd is perfect if you are depressed and in need of mourning. Her tortured soul bleeds through her songwriting and you really get a peek into her inner turmoil. The songs also tend to sound the same. This cd is addicting but I can't say a classic. I personally love it but I don't want to call it a GREAT piece for every ear out there, but definitely a very good piece.

4 out of 5 stars music to share.......2007-08-06

this is a nice change of recent/newer music.
i bought my own copy & purchased a second for my dad as a father's day gift.
(he enjoys it and is turning others onto it, just the same)
my daughter, 7 at the time of purchase, had me put some of the tunes on her ipod.
that speaks volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Very different........2007-08-06

I heard Rehab on the radio and I thought that this was a different sound. Her voice is husky but filled with emotion. This cd is completely different and refreshing. I recommend this cd if you like to hear an artist off the beaten path.

5 out of 5 stars Amy is a breath of fresh air.......2007-08-04

Her voice is magic and it reminds me of how good R&B used to be and still can be without the preservatives. When she sings, she hits me in the gut and I can relate to her songs in some ways. For someone so young, she sings about a wide range of life experiences. She will go a long way and she's truly an amazing talent.

5 out of 5 stars Not just about "Rehab"........2007-08-03

I had heard about Amy Winehouse long before her American TV performances that made her big in the US. So when her album came out, I just had to get it THAT day. Although most people know Amy from her catchy single, "Rehab", others know her for her jazzy music, incredible voice, and strong, yet witty messages in her songs.

Here's a quick overview of the highlights (and possibly lowlights) from the album Back to Black.

First, I can't go through a complete review without mentioning "Rehab". With its catchy lyrics, sexy jazz feel, and Amy's deep voice, it made a great first US single for this songstress. From there we go onto another of my favorite songs "You Know I'm No Good". The best part of the song is the sing-song, almost nursery rhyme feel of the verses. Its message is a strong one: I've cheated on you but "I told you I was trouble. You know that I'm no good".

Another great song on this album is "Me and Mr. Jones". Although some would argue that the entire album sounds like an old 1960's jazz album, I think "Me and Mr. Jones" is the most 60's sounding song on the album. Amy sings about her complicated relationship with "her man" and suggests that she's really not over him meanwhile inventing her own word to describe what is going on (although I won't mention the word since profanity is not allowed on Amazon). This song is another great example of how amazing Amy sounds when she hits the low notes.

My absolute favorite song is "Back to Black". The infectious sound of the keyboard and the violin, the simple, yet powerful chorus, and, of course, Amy's voice suggests that although the random humorous lyrics she throws in here and there show her playful personality, she also has a hard time dealing with parts of her life. If I were to suggest one song to listen to on this album, "Back to Black" is it.

Two other songs to look out for are "Love is a Losing Game" and "Tears Dry On Their Own". Two different messages but two great sounding songs. "Love" is one of the few ballads on this album while "Tears" is one of the few (if not the only) uplifting songs on this album. The bonus track is simply a remix of "You Know I'm No Good". Not much different from the original since the only difference really is a rap solo.

The other 4 songs I haven't mentioned are pretty good songs but they aren't outstanding. "Just Friends" just doesn't have the catchyness that the other songs have and I tend to skip right over it everytime I listen to this album. "Wake Up Alone"'s sound is extremely catchy (and it almost sounds like something you've heard before) and I absolutely love how sultry and sad Amy sounds. The sort of monotonous sound of the song prevents me from differentiating the chorus from the rest of the song so I wouldn't call this a "sing along" by any means. "Some Unholy War" is rather short and reads more like a letter than a song. "He Can Only Hold Her", again, is another catchy song but I wouldn't say it stands on its own.

I tend to think that my taste in music is eclectic so I didn't have a hard time truly liking this album. People who stick with one type of music may have difficulty getting into Back to Black but I suggest having an open mind when listening to this album. It is nothing like I have ever heard in the last 10 years or so and if Back to Black is an example of what's to come from musicians in the future, I'm ecstatic. I highly recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful CD.......2007-08-08

I bought this CD because I was so moved by his performance and victory on Britain's Got Talent. I loved watching him perform, but in the back of my mind, I was worried that I would not love the CD quite as much as the Britain's Got Talent shows; I was worried that the lack of visual and lack of audience would diminish the music.

Boy was I wrong!

This CD stands out on its own. The quality of sound is fantastic, and his voice is as rich as ever.

The great thing about Paul Potts, in addition to be a fabulous opera singer, is that he has popularized opera, in my opinion, like no other person ever has.

Get this CD. You will love it! It has surpassed my highest expectation.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling.......2007-08-08

While I was thrilled with the entire Paul Potts story, a part of me was dubious about the rendering of an album in such short order, and how it might be "anti-climactic" with respect to the now-famous U-Tube clips. "Wow". That's how I described it to my wife via text message after hearing it completely. Compelling and spacious, with energy and passion. It was the best twenty bucks I've spent in some time. This man is for real!

5 out of 5 stars The best voice ever heard he is touched by an angel.......2007-08-08

I saw and heard Paul Potts first on the internet from a you tube or some other video selection. I fell in love with his voice from the first note I heard. Tears literally came from my eyes when I heard his angelic voice. Its that beautiful. I knew right then and there that he would be a world wide star! I have never ever been affected by any type or kind of music the way that Paul's music has affected me. And that says alot as I worked as a Radio Station DJ and a club DJ for many years! This is the first Paul Potts CD I own and it will not be the last. As long as he is on Earth and making CDs I will be wanting them from him! Ray

5 out of 5 stars An incredible CD by one fine singer.......2007-08-07

Paul Potts has a beautiful voice that has been kissed by God. My wife and I congratulate him on his debut CD, and hope for many more throughout his career. One of the hallmarks of a good album is that when you listen to the tracks over and over again, it's like hearing them for the first time. That is the magical experience that we have with Paul Potts. His interpretation of the works, the feeling that is so evident on listening, comes through loud and clear. I personally couldn't care less about any perceived faults with this man which I certainly didn't hear. Bon Voyage with your singing career, Paul. You are a tremendous talent that we're all fortunate was found, and hopefully, one day, we will be able to listen to you live in America!

5 out of 5 stars One Chance Produces Limitless Pleasure.......2007-08-06

I purchased my copy of One Chance from AmazonUK because I could not wait for the American release. It was worth every penny! Paul won our hearts with his audition video because of his inspiring combination of courage, talent and passion. This CD shows that his voice has only improved since the competition. He chose the diverse range of songs because of the connection he felt with each, and he gives each a unique reading. His stirring voice inhabits the universe of each different song, making it a kind of mini-opera in itself. My favorites change with my mood and new hearings produce new insights, but Cavatina and Everybody Hurts continue to grab my heart. I can't wait for the next one!

Moving up to a major label has hardly lifted Interpol's spirits. This is a good thing. Even with the twisted Wild Kingdom album cover and bassist Carlos Dengler's unexpected Wild West makeover, on its third studio album the black-clad New York quartet still sounds inflexibly menacing, grasping tighter than ever to its doomy post-punk influences and delving further into frontman Paul Banks's emotional unrest. Everything sounds a little bigger and brighter, sure, but at their core songs like "Rest My Chemistry" and "Wrecking Ball" are heroically sinister, goaded on by prickly riffs and slow-bleeding rhythms. The group briefly jumps to life on the buzzing "Heinrich Manouver" and exhibits an unexpected dash of humor on "No I in Threesome," but it's the closing "Lighthouse" that best defines the set--a late-night lament that simply steals away into the dark. --Aidin Vaziri

Amazon.com

Our Love To Admire is at once unmistakably Interpol and undeniably new. The witty and perverse "No I In Threesome" is an upbeat ode to shaking up a staid relationship propelled by Carlos D's peerless bass melody while the tenderly observant "Pace Is the Trick" proves that the band are still the masters of the dramatic - check the painful pause right before the sinfully satisfying return of Sam's thundering drums and Daniel's ringing lead guitar. The band's impressively seductive evolution is obvious all over the record, but never more so than on tracks like "Mammoth," "Who Do You Think" and on the album's lyrical centerpiece, the ghostly "Rest My Chemistry." While Daniel is understandably proud of the song he cautions against reading too much autobiography into its lyrics. "We always leave the interpretation to the listener," he says. "I mean, you shouldn't watch a movie for the first time listening to the director's commentary!"

Our Love to Admire closes with "The Lighthouse," a funereal dirge that is among the most unexpected and memorable songs ever recorded by the band. Almost entirely percussion-free, the song is constructed around Daniel's mournful guitar and Paul's sparten lyrics. Not only is it one of their finest moments to date, it provides the album's most goose-bump inducing moment, the very same reflex shivers that make Interpol live shows such an exhilarating experience. As the very last song the band recorded for the album it was, they say, the hardest to play. The hypnotic guitar part was played on a 50-year-old guitar that had toxins on the strings, providing Daniel with a blistering and painful sensation in his fingers. The band weren't even sure the track would make it out of the studio, but once they heard Paul's remarkable vocals they were floored. The song - and the album - doesn't so much end as it bleeds to a close with a long, echoey coda filled with feedback and strings. A fittingly dramatic end to a stunning and emotional journey. Interpol is back, every bit as good as before but charged with a new spirit, a new direction, a new label and, most of all, a new confidence.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A disservice to Interpol fans.......2007-08-07

I have long loved Interpol because of the deep, if enigmatic and shapeless, lyrics that they convey over dark, reverberating bass. For olta, they have taken the lyrics that so enraptured me with their stunning imagery (such as "I'm going to hold your face and toast the snow that fell," a favorite of mine) and replaced them with trashy, obnoxious songs about how having sex with too many groupies is wearing the singer out, and toned down the bass that was so important to their sound. What the hell, man? I wanted Interpol, the band that used to ask questions that intoned deep introspection on the human condition and used to make music that I could get lost in and didn't care about finding my way out, not Interpol--the band that has way too much sex. Ditch this trash and get their first two albums instead.

3 out of 5 stars Truly disappointing.......2007-08-05

"Turn on the Bright Lights" and "Antics" are two of my very favorite albums, so I was understandably excited about this one. Early listens to "Pioneer to the Falls" and "The Heinrich Maneuver" got my hopes up that this record would be an epic to match Interpol's debut. Unfortunately, the rest of the album doesn't live up to the promise of those two songs -- and even those two, upon repeated listens, reveal themselves to be lesser efforts from a band that made two near-perfect albums on their first two tries.

The band seems to lack the punch, much of it supplied by killer drums and bass, from their first two works. Songs like "No I in Threesome," "All Fired Up" and "Wrecking Ball" simply fall flat; they lack the drive, relentless energy and delicious atmosphere that I've come to expect from Interpol. Even the better songs, like "Heinrich" and "Pioneer," seem strangely muted. The best songs on here, including "Mammoth" and "Rest My Chemistry," have at least some of the impact of early Interpol, and they come close to rescuing this spotty album.

However, the biggest drawback here is that in the absence of this instrumental kick and power, the band's lyrical shortcomings -- even worse here than on their earlier efforts -- are exposed for just how serious they are. I was willing to go along with the silly lines found in some of the early songs, because they seemed to work well with the music and at least left some sense of mystery; it was possible to let them slide as metaphor or as Pixies-esque ornamentation. But here, the lyrics just seem laughable; "No I In Threesome," "Pace is the Trick," "All Fired Up" and even "Heinrich" have this problem in spades.

I truly like this band, and I hope they can regain their old form in the future. But this album, sadly, is no better than the rest of the alt-rock boilerplate being cranked out by any number of bands, from the Killers to She Wants Revenge. That's company I thought Interpol was too good for, but they proved me wrong with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Another great album..........2007-08-04

Interpol managed to deliver a third great album!
Although it makes you think of a lot of other bands it's still the specific Interpol sound.
Their music creates a very special, unique atmosphere.
You either love it or hate it.

I love it!

Peace,

Rolf

4 out of 5 stars What can I say.......2007-08-04

This album lives up to the exceedingly high standards set by Turn on the Bright Lights and Antics.

For a band with such few full length studio albums released, I'm always slightly afraid that there will be a falling off. That is decidedly not the case here.

I thought Interpol's first effort was their best, with Antics an admirable but slightly underachieving album. With Our Love to Admire they've lived up to whatever hype they've managed to cultivate and offered more of what made me a fan while proceeding ahead into the moody alternative rock of their genre.

Easily as good as Turn on the Bright Lights, while maintaining the slightly more complex structure of Antics, Our Love to Admire starts and ends strong, with quite a few eminently classic songs in between. "Pioneer to the Falls" hits me the same way as "You Know You're Right" did on Nirvana's Nirvana album. It's a step in a new direction with the hallmarks of the band intact, and a reminder of why you listen to new albums in the first place.

One of the best albums of the year and a beacon in an otherwise fairly bleak 2007 (some notable exceptions from Wilco, Modest Mouse, The Good the Bad & the Queen, and Portugal. The Man notwithstanding).

4 out of 5 stars Spare Me The Suspense........2007-08-04

With their third album, Interpol deliver the same brand of punk rock that made them popular with their debut, "Turn On The Bright Lights". Now you can argue whether they've improved or whether they've recycled themselves, but for me, I admit my bias up front, I like the band. I can't currently think of any other band that recreates The Psychedelic Furs and The Cure so well. There are flourishes of Lou Reed, early Human League, Sex Pistols, Joy Division, etc., but mostly I think of The Psychedelic Furs. So, I enjoyed "Our Love To Admire". Is it as good as "Turn On The Bright Lights" or "Antics"? I think so.

There's no one particular song that I didn't like, but "The Scale" seemed rather weak to me. The strongest song seems to be the first single, "The Heinrich Maneuver" which comes close to "Evil" from "Antics". Other songs I liked after repeatedly listening to the disc are "Pioneer To The Falls", "Mammoth", "All Fired Up", "Rest My Chemistry" and "Who Do You Think". The rest of the tracks are also decent, but not necessarily as strong.

Overall, "Our Love To Admire" is four stars, not five, because the band still needs to grow and incorporate a greater range into their style. This third album is solid, but they're starting to stand in one spot. It's a good spot, but something more adventurous and experimental would be more interesting next time.

John Lennon would have turned 67 in 2007. If alive, he could well be at the forefront of bringing peace to Darfur, where more than half a million have died from violence and disease during four years of rebel discord. So to create awareness of the ongoing conflict, Amnesty International (with permission from Yoko Ono) has mined Lennon's solo work and rounded up nearly two dozen current artists to reinterpret the music, which spans the ex-Beatle's entire post-band catalog (plus a pair from while the Fab Four were still in business). As with any attempt to cover Beatles-related music, results are hit and miss, with kudos going to Snow Patrol and the Postal Service for capturing the starkness of "Isolation" and "Grow Old with Me," respectively, Mexican rock band Jaguares for uncovering the fear and fury in "Gimme Some Truth," and (surprise!) Christina Aguilera for nailing the complex composition and mood of "Mother." Other highlights include Jackson Browne's piano-led "Oh My Love," Green Day's louder straight take on "Working Class Hero," and the Black Eyed Peas turning "Power to the People" into a gospelly protest. Will resurrecting 30-to-40-year-old messages of peace and love be enough to help end the brutalities in Darfur? That remains to be seen. But selecting John Lennon as the author of those messages will make people listen and, with this collection, may keep them listening. --Scott Holter

4 out of 5 stars Very Good, for the most part.......2007-08-08

Nice group of John Lennon covers, and worth the price. There are, of course, some tracks that you may not like, but overall I'm pleased with the collection.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-08-06

I bought this CD after having heard the Jack Johnson version of "Imagine," which I loved. Unfortunately, it turns out that that is the only song on the CD that I will ever actually listen to. (Why would they even put Avril Lavigne on there?)

What it really comes down to for me, though, is that I would rather listen to John Lennon's own versions of his music any day.

5 out of 5 stars Supreme.......2007-08-04

This is a very nice collaction of one of the best song writers of all time

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-08-04

This CD is for such a good cause, plus the artists who re-compose John Lennon's songs do a fantastic job on it.

5 out of 5 stars Best tribute CD EVER.......2007-08-03

Each track is perfect for each group. No-one was out of their element. Green Day's version of Working Class Hero haunted me as much as the original. I enjoyed every track....And I am a John Lennon fan...and found the music truly a tibute to his genius.

Minutes to Midnight stands to defend Linkin Park's status as the hardest-rockin' softies in mainstream music. Like its predecessors Hybrid Theory (2000) and Meteroa (2003), Minutes to Midnight flexes plenty of decibel-heavy muscle ("Given Up," "Bleed It Out," "No More Sorrow") and made-to-order, melodic radio fare ("Leave Out All the Rest," "Shadow of the Day," "In Pieces"). But for all its volume, Linkin Park likes to paint its heart openly on its sleeve with suspicious sonic drama, as in the palpably saccharine "Valentine's Day." Fortunately, co-producer Rick Rubin brings all these elements to pinnacle effect with the surprise "Hands Held High." On past efforts, the combination of breezy keyboard, arpeggiated guitar, choral vocals, and a military snare-beat would yield another slab of smarm, here MC Mike Shinoda drops the two best verses of his career, blending vocal styles with singer Chester Bennington for a moving piece that's as welcome a repertorial addition as Linkin Park is ever likely to muster. --Jason Kirk

Album Description

"Minutes to Midnight" is rock's most anticipated album of the year. This album redefines one of today's most adventurous, accomplished and acclaimed bands.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars (untitled).......2007-08-06

This album shows Linkin Park in their growth as a band: Their sound has evolved. With Hybrid Theory it was raw, angsty, and angry, popularizing a badn clearly in it's adolesence. Meteora had some elements of angst, but it was more refined, though still lacking focus. Minutes to Midnight finds that focus that the other two lacked, keeping the anger, but losing the angst. All in all, Minutes to Midnight was awesome.

4 out of 5 stars Linkin Park takes it to the next level.......2007-08-05

You know what makes me angry.... All these people who have given poor reviews for "Minutes to Midnight". Note that most most the people giving poor reviews are immature high schoolers or younger who haven't developed their taste in music yet. All they want to hear is the same stuff. Linkin Park did a great job with this album. You can tell they put alot of thought and feelings into the music they wrote. What's good about this album is they kept the Linkin Park sound we all know and love, and mixed in a few tracks that were a little different in rythym and sound, it's nice to listen to an album all the way through and not every song sounds the same. In fact because of those reasons, it would be a plausible arguement that this is their best album out. However, everyone and their cousin is freaking out over them making a few minor changes adding several heart-felt tracks. God forbid any band try to be diverse and show they have more than one sound! If you enjoy the original Linkin Park sound you'll get that from Tracks 2, 6, and 8. Track 3, and 5 are slower in pace, but the music is catchy, and Chester does an outstanding job on the singing and lyrics. You don't even have to be a full-blown Linkin Park fan to enjoy this album, but if you are a true Linkin Park fan, and have mature taste in music, I guarantee you will like this album. It was worth every penny I spent to buy it, no regrets. Ignore the other reviews that bad mouthed this album. I read those reviews too, but I decided to ignore them and give this album a shot, because I'm a linkin park fan, and I'm very glad I did so.

4 out of 5 stars For your "older, mature music lovers", check this out!.......2007-08-03

I really bought this CD on a whim.....it was on sale. It is much, much, much more than I expected. What I expected was crunching, aggressive metal with growling angry voices. Lincoln Park does this on some songs, but does it very well (Given Up and No More Sorrow). The music is creatively organized and the vocals are superior to anything I have heard in the heavy metal genre. Most importantly, the lyrics (which you can easily understand) have meaning in today's world. The "protest" songs are outstanding (Hands Held High and No More Sorrow) and really have relevance today for every man, woman, and child, not just your typical "angry adolescent". For example, the raspy, screaming chant of "theives and hypocrites" accurately depicts members of our current administration. LP embarrassingly describes G.W. Bush as "the leader just talks away stuttering amd mumbling for the nightly news to replay". Although their line "when the rich wage war, its the poor who die" is not original, I would certainly like to hear it much more often in all kinds of today's songs....rock, pop, country, etc. I am from the generation that helped to force the Nixon administration end an immoral war and we need EVERYONE to focus the same energy on Bush and friends. As LP says, "Your time has come to be replaced."

So, I give Lincoln Park an A+ for taking a "clear political stand". My only concerns with this CD is its over-reliance on ballads and the fact that it could be longer by today's standards. Don't get me wrong, many of the ballads are excellent with great melodies, harmonies, and themes, but I would have enjoyed a little more of the harder metal. All and all, it is an excellent effort and a good way for us "older rockers" to add some contemporary metal to our collections. Try it...I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

2 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2007-08-03

After spending the time to listen to the whole CD, I've never been sooooo disappointed! Other than the lead vocal's voice, it doesn't sound like Linkin Park. I hope on the next one (if this doesn't bury them) goes back to the old Linkin Park sound (the one that made them great).

5 out of 5 stars Very good album........2007-08-02

A lot of complaints are being made about this album not being what people wanted out of a Linkin Park album. I can understand that. It is still a very good album. Everything changes. Everything grows and evolves. Few bands can start and end their career using the same sound. Listen to it and appreciate it for what it IS, not what you want it to be.

The Brandi Carlile story so far is fairly short: fresh-faced singer-song writer from rural Ravensdale, Washington, quietly releases a 2005 debut that has critics and fans reaching for their thesauruses searching for appropriate adjectives to describe her voice. Patsy Cline, Jeff Buckley, kd lang, Beth Orton, Linda Ronstadt, and Aimee Mann get name-checked as Carlile and her guitar-and-bass-playing Hanseroth twins-led band criss-cross the country for two years, first as openers, then as headliners. Cue the overproduced, disappointing follow-up album? Not so fast. On The Story, Carlile teams up with veteran roots producer T Bone Burnett, who brings in vintage equipment and strips down her sound. Instead of using overdubs, the new songs--most of which were already road-tested--are recorded live, giving the ballads and midtempo rockers a tough, uncompromising edge and a fuller, more aggressive attack. Echoes of country and folk color the bucolic "Have You Ever" and the unadorned acoustic "Cannonball," but it's the sweeping drama of the more epic-sounding "Until I Die," "Late Morning Lullaby," and the U2-styled "My Song" that leave the greatest lasting impressions. Carlile and Burnett make a perfect team: he allows her malleable voice room to soar in the mix while she brings sharp original songs that exude confidence, pride, and emotion. It's a combustive combination and one that results in a sophomore release every bit as good, and in many respects better, than her first. Stay tuned as the story continues. --Hal Horowitz

Brandi Pics

From Amazon.ca

Brandi Carlile has a rare voice, consistently spilling over with honesty, purity, and passion. Her dynamic and tonal range is truly exceptional and on par with the likes of k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, and Patsy Cline--at times soft, swooping, and clear as a bell ("Turpentine," "Josephine," "Cannonball"), and then ferocious to the point of breaking ("The Story," "My Song"). A voice like Carlile's when paired with the right material is a winning combination, and The Story's country-meets-Radiohead ballads and rockers do not disappoint. While the songs on are not as consistently stellar as those on her self-titled debut album, they are more often than not solid, and show off her talents and confidence as both an artist and performer, which have fully bloomed since her debut. This, coupled with T Bone Burnett's light, live production style, creates an album that is ultimately more rewarding than her first. The high points on The Story have raised the bar considerably for Carlile, and they are frequent. Her choice to record the album in a live setting inside the studio lends it a raw intimacy and authenticity noticeably absent from most studio recordings, and leaves us with not only an album, but a work of art. Carlile is a career artist still defining her sound, but her maturity as a vocalist cannot be questioned--this is an immensely talented singer laying herself bare before us, and one of the strongest releases of 2007. --Alan Wiley

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic sound!.......2007-07-27

Brandi Carlile is wonderful! I saw her open up for the Indigo Girls this summer and had to rush out and get this CD. She's an interesting modern twist on a classic folk sound, reminding me a little of Patsy Cline and Bonnie Raitt. I can't stop listening to her. Love it!

4 out of 5 stars Passionate songwriter and singer.......2007-07-27

I had never heard of Brandi before I heard "THE STORY". This song is so full of passion and has some of the best lyrics I've heard in a long time. The rest of the album is also pretty good and a great listen as a whole. However, "The Story" is still the showstopper.

4 out of 5 stars A brilliant & fresh approach.......2007-07-20

Really enjoyed this release. She can burn like Melissa at times, fall back on senstive sounds like Kathleen Edwards when she wants. There are influences from 60s rock (Elton, Beatles, Mott), yet her distinct warble blossoms as a wildwood flower. I'm gonna find her debut CD.

If you gravitate toward other female singer-songwriter greats in league with Sarah Harmer, Alice Peacock or Jessica Sykes, this should work for you.

5 out of 5 stars I <3 Brandi Carlile.......2007-07-15

This CD....*sigh*....is wonderful! This one and the one before it are both amazing. She is soulful and raw. She exposes her inner workings through her beautiful melodies.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive.......2007-07-13

Brandi Carlile has a unique sound and I must admit that I wasn't sure I liked her at first. But a friend encouraged me to listen to "The Story" more closely. After hearing it a few times, I fell in love. Later, I heard "Turpentine" on Grey's Anatomy... wow! I bought the cd and am totally addicted. It stays in my car because I listen to it regularly. One of my all-time favorite songs is "Wasted".

From Amazon.co.uk

If the art of the female singer-songwriter revolves around coffee-table soliloquies then Eye to the Telescope--the debut album from Edinburgh-born chanteuse/guitarist KT Tunstall--is a pleasing mediation between the traditional demands of brooding egocentricity (espresso) and frothy commerciality (cappuccino). KT Tunstall has star quality. "Suddenly I See" is an effortlessly liberating pop fillip while, conversely, "False Alarm" redresses ABBA's "The Winner Takes It All" for losers who had nothing to lose to begin with. However, Tunstall isn't entirely convinced by the compromise ("I'm struggling to cater for the space I'm meant to fill" she sings) and "Miniature Disasters"--one of several strong numbers showcasing her aptitude for wrapping up pop tunes in either folky bluesiness or ponderous jazz--catalogues her desires for unfettered self-expression. The opening cut "Other Side Of The World" might sound like Dido without the giftwrapped grief (she's none too flattered with the comparisons) but Eye to the Telescope is spiritually closer to Carole King and Elvis Costello than Katie Melua. And that's no bad thing. --Kevin Maidment

KT Tunstall's debut album Eye To The Telescope is the creative consequence of her inquiring imagination. "My songs examine and explore little specific emotions or situations or stories," she explains. "They're kitchen table songs, like a conversation between me and one other person. It's almost like an alien has been sent to get emotional samples from human beings and put it all together on a record."

I bought this cd for the song "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" after hearing it on the radio. KT's music is a little different, not hard rock, not jazz, just enough there to hear her beautiful voice.

Enjoy something different for a change!

5 out of 5 stars Not another cookie cutter pop tart!.......2007-08-01

There is nothing manufactured or contrived about KT Tunstall or her c.d. Eye to the Telescope. It's melodic, beautiful and thoughtful.

I'll be keeping this in heavy rotation for a long time to come.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Album.......2007-07-25

I love this album and there is not one bad song, so I can listen to it thoroughly. If you have not got this album yet what are you waiting for? Here is a tip if you liked James Blunt's Album Back to Bedlam then you will probably like this debut by KT Tunstall. In fact Amazon recommends this album if you do.

BTW when you first listen to this album you may not like it at first or maybe just like some songs, but after listening to it the second time it grows on you and you will absolutely love it. I know because when I first listened to this album I only liked half of it and feel asleep thinking this album was so boring until I listened to it the second time later in the day.

The style known as "anti-folk," as realized by practitioners like Ani DiFranco and Billy Bragg, is derived from a punk aesthetic, and thus tends to be spare and confrontational. But while Regina Spektor's music is anti-folk in the way it subverts the traditional coffeehouse vibe, it's less interested in rebellion and more concerned with the joy of eccentricity, melody and surprise. Begin To Hope is full of surprises, and like her promising major label debut Soviet Kitsch, it displays an easy facility with song structure that enables her to go in different--sometimes wildly off-the-wall--directions without sounding scattered. Classically trained on the piano, she's been compared to Tori Amos, but her music isn't as delicate or precious. Fiona Apple comes up as well, but just because neither fits in the usual female singer/songwriter cookie cutter mold doesn't mean they sound the same. Her voice is actually the primary attraction, cracking and loopy on would-be lullabies like "On The Radio" and "Field Below," then punchy and cute on "Hotel Room." But the music, if understated in the mix next to her vocals, makes an impression as well, breaking in with twisty piano arpeggios ("20 Years of Snow") and occasional touches of electronica. It's a consistently intelligent and daring record, yet remains enormously listenable--a neat trick for anti-folk, or any other genre of music for that matter. -Matthew Cooke

Album Description

Regina Spektor's last album, 2004's Soviet Kitsch, garnered praise from Time, Rolling Stone, Spin, Vanity Fair, The New York Times and many others. But this Russian-born, Bronx-bred singer-songwriter-pianist, who emerged from the NYC café circuit, continues to expand her vision. On Begin To Hope, produced by David Kahne (The Strokes, Sublime, Sugar Ray), she broadens here palette with electric guitar, drum machines and seductive electronic loops, finding new canvases for her provocative vocal style. Hope for pop has arrived with Regina Spektor.

I like her style and her creativity. What a voice! Just wish the CD was a little longer.

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly novel..........2007-08-01

Admittedly, I am a book reviewer at heart, and typically leave the music reviews to those who are more qualified. However, I find that I simply cannot keep my mouth shut on this one. Spektor has revived my faith in music. She is fresh, and new, and unlike anyone else I have heard lately. Call me crazy, but being a child of the 80s, she puts me in mind of Cyndi Lauper with all of her seemingly quirky and funloving antics. With all of the poseur garbage coming out in the last seven (or so) years, I can only say that I find Regina Spektor to be fresh, fun, and for once, unique. Forget downloading! This is a CD you must own.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, Surprising and Happy.......2007-07-27

If you're in the mood for something a little different,
If you want some music that makes you feel good,
If you like an album you can play straight multiple times,
If you like female vocals,
Regina's Begin to Hope is for you.

5 out of 5 stars She sounds like a little chirpy bird.......2007-07-17

My friend recommented her to me. I heard her single Fidelity before and thought it nice then forgot about it. Just on impulse, I grabbed her cd from my friend's car and decided to give it a listen today. Glad I did, I just love it and gushed to my friend and he sent me more of her songs. I love her even more. Regina has such a unique style both on melody and lyrics. It's hard to put in words, you just have to listen to her. Give her a try. I'm going to get all her albums.

3 out of 5 stars annoying at first but then she grows on you.......2007-06-30

Regina Spector recieved radio play at the station I listen to as well as having a short article in Newsweek. I purchased her CD based on these things . The first few listens of her CD annoyed me. There were too many "clever hooks" that she does with her voice. But, after about 10 listens, her music started to grow on me. Like alot of young artists, she brings a fresh perspective on perpetual themes but also has themes that are unusual. She plays the piano very well and her voice is clear and strong. I don't know if I will want to listen to her CD 5 years from now when it's lost the novelty but it's a good start for a young artist.

On their full-length debut, Denver quartet the Fray don't exactly reinvent the wheel, but those looking for melodic, mid-tempo pop could do far worse. That said, the 12 songs on Top 40 hit How To Save a Life are barely distinguishable from each other. If you like one, you'll probably like the rest (and you'll be in the company of thousands of other listeners.) If you don't like one, it's unlikely the others will change your mind. Formed in 2002 and signed by Epic in 2004, the band consists of Isaac Slade (vocals, piano), Joe King (guitar, vocals), Ben Wysocki (drums), and Dave Welsh (guitar). Since their formation, the Fray have elicited comparisons to British groups like Coldplay and Keane, and American ones like Counting Crows and the Wallflowers. They've also toured with Weezer and Ben Folds and had songs--like first single "Over My Head (Cable Car)"--featured on such popular programs as Grey's Anatomy. Though they incorporate guitar, unlike Keane, Slade's expert piano playing is prominent on every track. To his credit, he can also hit the high notes just as gracefully as Coldplay's Chris Martin, but therein lies the rub: As with the band as a whole, Slade hasn't quite found his own voice yet. How To Save a Life is polished and professional, bland and inoffensive. It goes down easy, but evaporates into the ether just as quickly. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

3 out of 5 stars Good Pop.......2007-07-20

Not bad, 3 stars only. Songs all kind of sound the same after a few plays!

4 out of 5 stars Album starts off well then fades..........2007-07-19

By now, most people who listen to alternative rock have heard of these guys. If you are reading this, then you want to know "Do I really want this album?". I think if you like the genre of music a lot (like Coldplay, Blue October, Keane), the go ahead and give this album a try. If you just like one of their songs, consider downloading that song and a couple more (chose from tracks 1 - 6 for more upbeat melodies and after for slower ones). The album tended to grow on me but is still not one I listen too all that often because of many of the songs sounding very similar.

2 out of 5 stars Over and over again.......2007-06-16

I heard "Over MY Head" on a TV cable series, found it catchy, and wanted to find out who recorded it. After an eventful personal odyssey, I finally discovered this. Unfortunately my journey was a wasted effort. HOW TO SAVE A LIFE, the debut album for this piano-based-sounding group (from Denver-if that has any significance), is pleasant enough, that is, on first listening, but it is clearly superficial and soon becomes redundant. The enticing single "Over My Head" does have an entertaining chorus and a memorable refrain that makes nice use of the cable car metaphor. The majority of the other compositions on this album, however, sound as if they were manufactured by a cookie cutter song machine. Indeed, I don't think I recall ever hearing selections that were so much alike: they use a very (VERY) similar musical structure, are almost identical in studio production, and follow the same form- opening with an understated verse which then moves speedily to a chorus (that sounds like the chorus of the previous song) and repeats ala loop to make the statement. A slight exception might be the title track "How To Save A Life" (apparently among those heard on Grey's Anatomy) with its delicate piano intro and tender ballad-like message or "She Is" which demonstrates a bit of a driving rhythm. But even those do not stray too far away from the mold. They both, for example, still employ the same repetitious chorus device (in fact, when I was listening to "How to Save A Life" I thought it was "Over My Head."). The rest aren't even worth comment other than to say they are undistinguished. At best, they are derivative in content (borrowing from other vanilla-type ensembles) which nonetheless still does not excuse their own absence of variety. Likewise, the lead singer's voice, reminiscent perhaps of David Gray's, fits the tone of "Over My Head," but by the time you hear its whining character on two or three of the other tracks [incidentally- NOT like David Gray], you may want to be rescued from the experience. The continued exposure will either annoy you or put you to sleep.
To the point, this first album for The FRAY indicates that the group understands the concept of formula far too well. They should appreciate, however, that comfortable and familiar often leads very quickly to boring. With that in mind, most, if not all, of this can be thrown in the waste bin unless you are looking for sounds that will induce deep slumber. To be honest, its most salient feature is monotony. It is unobtrusively bland and shallow, with little evidence of either creative or original effort.

4 out of 5 stars very listenable tracks.......2007-06-04

I spend most of my time in Europe, so I don't get too much exposure to up and coming bands. By chance on a recent trip home I heard The Fray on one of the 'Top 40' programs. I liked what I heard, sampled a few tracks online, and bought the music. While I might agree with the numerous reviews that say many of the Fray's songs sound similar, I still enjoy them. I recommend giving a listen to the Fray and look forward to seeing what comes next from them.

5 out of 5 stars excellent album.......2007-05-26

This album is a great album. Each song is really good. Very mellow.
