From Rhythm Magazine
Some Native American music is so traditional, it's almost off-putting to the untrained ear. Some is so homogenized that it's merely exoticized pop. Then there's Native music that says, "I am of a particular Nation, and I'm strong enough to be out in the world and still be me." That is the joy of Quilt Man's music, which features his traditional Warm Springs vocal style softly supported by tabla, fretless bass and Native flute. The bass, played by co-producer Andro Kotula, creates a wonderful duet with Quilt Man's voice on the title track. "Redwood Crowhop" is a treat, using National steel guitar, harmonica, vocals and Native drum to create a home-on-the-res statement, while Mary Youngblood's flute sends soulful sounds skyward.

Folk with a Celtic and even Bluegrass flavor, Rite the First Time swings from the sublime to the silly and from the material to the spiritual in eclectic mixes of harmonic vocals and acoustic instruments (harp, guitar, bodhran, and upright bass).
Customer Reviews:
I cannot say enough about this CD!.......2007-05-01
I love it for its intricate harmonies (I love to sing along in harmony) and its brilliant, original, and hysterical lyrics. Pity Party is my absolute favorite. These ladies have a scathing sense of humor. My two year old, autistic daughter is completely enchanted by this CD, as well. I expect we'll be playing a whole lot of it in the Mommy-mobile for many years to come.
Great Lyrics~!.......2007-02-04
I love the lyrics! There's such humor in some of the tracks - really wonderful rhythmic well made music - unlike anything really - so refreshingly NOT new agey. More, please!
Rite the first time is very RITE!!.......2006-08-18
I bought this CD based on the name of the group, and the name of the CD, just having heard the little bitty preview on Amazon and I'm glad I did. It is intelligent humor; entertaining musically as all three women are talented both in voice and instrument. Sometimes, in the Craft, we take ourselves a little bit too seriously. This is an excellent reminder that there's another side to it all.
Just wonderful.......2005-12-09
I love this cd. The eclectic mix of music that sing about the mundane and make it so fun. I enjoy just singing along with these women. They have done a great job and made a wonderful cd. This album is quirky and light-hearted and well worth the money spent on it. Great music!
Sisters in Witchcraft.......2005-09-23
Anything by the 'sisters is great. C'mon, how many voices wax poetic about Iowa? This CD is solid and well thought out, with vocals that penetrate the mind; and enrich the believers nights. And it's too bad so few people will ever hear of them. This celebration is NOT just for us; it's for everyone. Blessed be.

Customer Reviews:
I love this CD!.......2006-03-20
This music is full of life. Each tune is personal and sung from the heart-- To top it off, not only are all of the lyrics and tunes good, these women are talented-- they can sing-- funny thing is, they don't seem like "musicians", more like some weird sisters, singing tunes for their own pleasure and we just get to listen in. They can even put slightest grin into a word (you know they gotta be smiling through some of the pointy haired boss lyrics). There are some songs that are pure fun (pointy haired boss), some with a lively tune and humor. "My Karma broke down" is classic, a message, but nothing heavy, just fun. "Like their feet had wings" got my toe tapping and me singing and wanting to join in! "All the boys" is another fun one. Then, the a capella "Hymn", "Drawing down the moon", "May queen" express much of the pagan path. "New Forest" is a true gem. The title of my review says it all, I love this CD.
Clever and Funny and Toe-Tapping.......2006-03-13
What a joy to listen to! I liked Rite the First Time enough to try this second album, and am glad I did. It's very upbeat and fun to sing along with - especially the Karma song and the Pointy-Haired Boss (has Scott Adams heard this?). Great Pagan songs, too. Thanks, Three Weird Sisters.
Even Better Than Rite!.......2005-11-23
Three Weird Sisters have gotten even better! "Draw Down the Moon" is a perfect circle song. "Least of My Kind" is chilling and works even better than "In a Gown Too Blue" on the first album. "What My Granny Taught Me" is pagan gardening at it's best. "My Karma Broke Down" is a rollicking spiritual trip. "Like Their Feet Have Wings" is a happy fairy song that doesn't make me want to heave.:-) There are a few songs I don't care for, which costs a star, but on the whole I recommend Hair of the Frog highly. Buy it!
The Three Weird Sisters did it again! Fantastic!.......2004-09-20
I have been anxiously awaiting this second cd for months now. And it was well worth the wait. Hair of the Frog has the same rich vocal harmonies that I fell in love with in Rite the First Time, wrapped around the smart, touching, and witty lyrics that are a Three Weird Sisters hallmark. The Three Weird Sisters are eclectic, Celtic acoustic folk music at its best. What a joy to listen to...over and over and over again.
The best kept secret in modern acoustic music.......2004-09-14
A fine follow-up to their strikingly original debut CD "Rite the First Time", Three Weird Sisters' "Hair of the Frog" expands the boundaries of their eclectic Celtic-acoustic style. As in their first effort, the sound is defined by lush vocal harmonies, witty and thoughtful lyrics, and inventive melodies. Although this CD is not possessed of a jaw-dropping epic like "In A Gown Too Blue" (from the first CD), overall it is a more balanced and mature work. The Sisters have shown they can master the difficult balancing act of remaining true to their core sound while evolving as artists. Standout tracks include the achingly beautiful ballad "Pole Star", a gritty exposition of Cat Faber's werewolf anthem "Least of My Kind", the soaring a capella gospel choir of "Hymn", the layered vocal harmonies of "New Forest", and a luminous cover of the Janis Ian/Cheryl Wheeler classic "Orbiting Jupiter". Also noteworthy is the sparkling production quality of producer/engineer and former "Kansas" keyboardist Greg Robert. If you have the first CD, you know what all the buzz is about. This sophomore outing does not disappoint.

Relaxing and wonderful music.......2002-12-11
I bought this cd when I was pregnant with my baby and listened to it frequently and I also used it during and after labor to help relax. It was the perfect thing. And I have played it for my baby ever since at naptime and bedtime. She is a year old now and it still relaxes her.
Excellent CD for bedtime.......2001-09-03
My daughter and I have listened to this CD hundreds of times since she was born. It is very soothing and great for bedtime and naptimes. The songs just flow along and put her (and sometimes me) right to sleep.

Quiltman is Wonderful!.......1999-09-10
I was introduced to Quiltman's voice through the music of American Indian activist, actor and recording artist extrordinaire, John Trudell. Quiltman's traditional vocals were haunting and added to the power of John's music. On his own Quiltman is as good as I'd anticipated. Quitlman's vocals went right through me like only the best NDN singer can. He has the ability to bring tears to the eyes and raise the spirit with his voice in the same song. This CD is a definite "must own" for those who appreciate First Nations music.

Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24
Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.
This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.
Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.
My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

Another Go 'Round.......2006-02-16
This album was an unexpected success with me. I thought it might be an underwhelming comeback album. However, as I listened to "Mr. Pinkus" and the opening tune "Kiss Me" I came to appreciate that they had seemingly cherrypicked the better portions of their material and created strong, heavy rock tunes with a concommittant attention to their usual dark humor.
As a standout song, "Helsinki" is a dark stream-of-consciousness song that really sold the album for me. It's not easy to make "I've got a hole like a woman" sound both heavy and authentic at the same time. Not easy at all.
Altogether I gave it 4 stars simply because..although I applaud their dyi use of a mac, the production quality is strangely tinny at times, and the anachronistic fade out on the song "Cost" really bugs me everytime I hear it. Without the fade-out, I probably would've given this ingenious record a 5 star rating.
Psuedo-reunion album smashes the stereotype.......2005-11-05
When the Donut dissolved with an overproduced whimper in 1995, no one expected them to quietly resurface almost a decade later with the most stripped down, focused album of their career. Flat out rocks.
This one takes me back...

Yahoo!! The greatest band you never heard of is baaaaaack!!.......2004-07-07
In 1988 I started DJing on a college radio station in Oregon, and was intrigued by a LOUD pink obnoxious album cover (back in the days before CDs, boys and girls!) in the rotation bin. It was AD's first album, Donut Comes Alive, and what I heard blew me away. From then on I made sure to get at least one Alice Donut song into each show, and they remained one of my very favorite bands for years. Sadly, after many energetic and creative albums, they disbanded eight years ago. I was totally bummed.
New Yorkers originally on Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacle label, they are now back, with the same members, and I am so So SO happy!! A little less profane than their youthful selves, frontman Tomas Antona and his compatriots are still full of energy, killer riffs, amazing lyrics and punk hearts, deriding consumerism and sentimentality. For instance "Wired": "When I die/When I go/Spread my ashes on an all ages show".
The disk also includes a video, the winner of a fan contest -- and let that guide you -- if a group still has an enthusiastic fan club eight years after they broke up, they must be musical geniuses, a term I don't bandy about lightly. Do yourself a favor: if you enjoy guitar and drums, if you like interesting lyrics, if you want to rock -- please give this underappreciated group a try.
Rock's rotting corpse.......2004-06-23
Rock and roll is dead. With a very few minor exceptions. One of them being Alice Donut. Smart, funny, political. These are a few adjectives I can unpack when describing one of the best bands ever. While everyone else is only interested in how much money they can make while grabbing the mic to tell me they'l die before thier sold[a little clash rip there], Alice were always about the simple communication of ideas. A rare commodity indeed. The people who get it will buy this cd and go to the shows while the rest will be sold the next big thing. So keep your Strokes, White Stripes, etc, ad nauseum, ad infinitim. I'll listen to some real music. Standout tracks include "She tells me things", "Problems", and "Helsinki". The overall theme seems to be America's obsession with consumerism and it's exportation of same. Especially by gunpoint. Inspirational verse, "Soon they'll become just like us and we'll teach them how to shop". How apropos as we begin our colonization of the middle east. New markets to open. Thanks Alice, for coming back. We need you now more then ever.

Great Sampling of Gilbert & Sullivan Gems.......2001-08-22
Gilbert & Sullivan have been well-served on disc and this compliation of 22 tracks taken from of some of their most popular operettas is certainly no exception. Contained here are tuneful hits from HMS Pinafore, Pirates of Penzance, Iolanthe, Mikado, Patience, and the Gondoliers. These performances are taken from the complete sets by Sir Malcolm Sargent conducting the Pro Arte Orchestra, Glyndebourne Festival Chorus, and several outstanding soloists. I own several of these complete operettas by this group and can attest to their excellence in both singing and orchestral playing. I feel these performances are the best available, and that's a huge compliment given the fine competition. I love playing this disc in my car whenever I'm in a Gilbert & Sullivan "greatest hits" mood. Whether you're a novice or veteran to these works, you can't beat this highly enjoyable CD. Recommended!
