Mathieu was born in Avignon, not far from its storied bridge, and made her singing debut when she was only 16. As she arrived on the musical scene not long after the death of Edith Piaf, there was a natural tendency to welcome her as a virtual reincarnation of the much regretted Piaf. In reality, of course, Mathieu's vocal resources were quite different, and when she matured as an artist these differences became more pronounced. In contrast to the street waif appeal of Piaf, Mathieu evolved a very robust approach, which incorporated some of Ethel Merman's fabulous projection. She also branched out in other directions, appealing to the wider European audiences of the late 20th century, in Germany for example, and, on this disc, Greece. Clearly influenced by Nana Mouskouri, Mathieu has developed a very cosmopolitan repertoire, which now extends from the Mediterranean to the Baltic. --Edward Killham

5 out of 5 stars The most beautiful songs.......2004-02-15

I am a big fan of Mireille Mathieu music. In my opinion she is the most talented French singer with the most beautiful voice. The way she sings makes your heart smile, fill you with positive emotions and raise your spirit. It is so pity that in Ukraine, where I am from, it is impossible to find her CDs. I am not sure if it is a breach of policy, but I would like here to turn to people with a request of assistance. I will appreciate very much if someone could help me to get her music. As a token of my appreciation I will send you some CDs with Russian music.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent........2003-12-11

MM possesses an incredible voice. She can sure carry a tune with fabulous projection. MM was blessed with a seemingly perfect life. She realized her dream of becoming a singer. She is now happily married with children. This is why she should not be named Piaf's successor as she sometimes is (in fact, Piaf named DALIDA as her successor--far more fitting because of Dalida's personal traumas, altho' Dalida's voice is far different from Piaf's, whereas MM's is a bit closer). MM sings as if it is her craft. Piaf sings because it is her life and she lives those songs every time she sings them. In other words, although her voice is technically superb, sometimes MM's songs come off less than heartfelt or emotional. This does not bother me, though it may bother some. This CD made me become a fan of MM

The quality of these songs is 5 stars, the quality of the disk is 4 because it is just another compilation and I hate Paul Anka's appearance on this CD. I find my favorite songs to be Sta Maria, Ma delivrance, Femme amoureuse, Je veux l'aimer, Tous les enfants.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but far from her best..........2003-09-28

I am a huge fan....So let that be your grain of salt
with this review. I have trouble listening to her sing
in German, so this French version of many international
songs is great. They are remastering her "CHANTE PIAF" album
which is scheduled for release in about a week or two (OCT 7, 03). Her voice has a bell like quality that is unlike any
other singer I have heard. She is (so sorry) much better than
Streisand in selling a song and, well, I like her voice much
better. Her "MES PLUS GANDS SUCCES" numbers ONE and TWO are
the "MUST HAVES" after that, you'll likely want more.

2 out of 5 stars mille colombes.......2003-02-10

excellent words for this time when war is at our door

4 out of 5 stars Just another Compilation..........2001-11-06

This album includes a number of Mireille's most favored Love Songs which is fine... but in the meantime it focuses mostly on her commercial releases, e.g. Akropolis Adieu, Santa Maria De La Mer, Mille Colombes & Tous Les Enfants Chantent Avec Moi.
The question is, "Is this is just another Greatest Hits package?
Listeners will be satisfied by the haunting vocals on "Je Veux L'Aimer", the powerful "Une Femme Amourseuse" (Woman In Love) & the quintessential Duets with Paul Anka. But still, where is that beautiful Duet with Charles Aznavour "Une Vie D'Amour" or her own rendition of Lionel Richie's "Hello"? The Labels should get in shape and start re-mastering and re-releasing some of those old records that have been locked forever somewhere in the vaults.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully vivid and exotic........2003-10-07

Renowned accompanist Gerald Moore's comments about the many luminaries of C20 music that he accompanied were both pertinent and perceptive. The effect that Maggie Teyte's singing had on him, he said, made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. Listening to this excellent anthology, you might register a similar response. Try two of the songs by Reynaldo Hahn, in which she is accompanied by Gerald Moore, and you will be aware of singing that is at once a crie de coeur and ecstatic.

At an advanced age, Maggie Teyte proved to be a feisty and imperious subject in many radio interviews. She had much to tell, of course, about many of the composers with whom she worked, some of whose songs she sings here. She also admitted that recordings such as these, made late in her career, carried her name to all parts of the world and opened doors into large, well-filled concert halls. The vocal longevity was remarkable. Her last recording here, Ravel's Sheherazade, was made in her 60th year. One critic welcomed it with the description "wonderfully vivid and exotic", and that is how it still sounds to me.

You'll find many ratities here, including a clean copy of a discarded duet Maggie Teyte recorded with John McCormack. The Irish tenor holds the last note for almost half a bar longer than Maggie Teyte does - an irregularity that possibly caused the recording to remain unissued for many years.

      5 out of 5 stars Two-and-a-half hours of beauty.......2003-06-02

This two CD issue from Naxos of singing by Maggie Teyte (1888-1976) is a treat for two different audiences. For those of us who have long known and loved her voice, it is 2 1/2 hours of mostly French mélodies and arias sung as only she could sing them, in a pristine restoration by that wizard, Ward Marston. For those who don't know her singing, it is a fabulous introduction at budget price to a singer who put the stamp of her unmistakable personality on everything she sang with great musicality, intelligence, impeccable diction, and purity of tone throughout her range.

Included are fifteen mélodies by Debussy (Fetes galantes I & II, Trois Chansons de Bilitis, Le Promenoir de deux amants, et al.) accompanied by the inimitable Alfred Cortot. Almost all the other piano-accompanied songs are with Gerald Moore, that paragon who accompanied every important artist of his era. Also included are Ravel's Schéhérazade, some of the best known Fauré songs (Aprés un reve, Nell, Clair de lune), the delectable Psyché of Paladilhe, and three by Reynaldo Hahn (Offrande, L'Heure exquise, and Si mes vers avaient des ailes). There are assorted other songs by Purcell, Martini, Pergolesi, a couple of selections from Berlioz's Nuit d'été (Absence, and Spectre de la rose), Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Chausson, Duparc (Phydilé, L'Ivitation au voyage), Offenbach (Tu n'es pas beau), Messager. It ends with several songs in English by Elgar (Pleading), Quilter (the exquisite Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal), Thomas's Night Hymn at Sea (with John McCormack, and never before released), a song from a Kennedy Russell operetta, and Romberg's Deep in My Heart, Dear.

The last songs were recorded when she was over sixty and one cannot hear any erosion of the voice at all. It had maintained its fragile lyric beauty after more than forty years of performing.

Some of these performances are available on other labels (e.g. Pearl) but at much higher price. You simply cannot go wrong here. One again Naxos has given us an issue of major historical interest. Long may they continue this effort!

      Recommended.
