Lyric mezzo-soprano Susan Graham stands out from the crowd for her expressive, opulent voice and communicative gifts. Someone at Sony has made the decision to place her in the public mind primarily as a singer of French works, and although it would be a shame to see her limited to that area of the repertoire, she does sing the French repertoire exceptionally. Graham sings sensitively and idiomatically in this group of 24 songs by Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947), a Venezuelan-born, French-reared composer and conductor who knew how to craft a song like few others. In such lovely songs as "A Chloris," which opens the album, and "Je me souviens," Hahn creates a bevy of beautiful little worlds, which Graham and the outstanding pianist Roger Vignoles present in memorable form. This album belongs in the collection of all lovers of song. --Sarah Bryan MillerCustomer Reviews:

Excellent Catalyst for Seduction. Buy It........2006-05-19
The songs are so gentle and so seductive that they are as likely to set the tone for the seducer as well as for the seductee. Even if you are not in a seductive situation, the songs will make you want to be there.
All this means is that while Reynaldo Hahn does not have the great reputation of Berlioz or Shubert or Schuman or Debussy, you really should know his songs, and Ms. Graham does a great interpretation to make this introduction.
Graham's Artistry Makes for Compelling Listening in a Collection of Songs from a 'Minor' Composer.......2006-02-27
I know the songs of Reynaldo Hahn from a number of worthy recordings from other artists -- Rachel Yakar, Martyn Hill, Bruno Laplante, Mady Mespl?, Graham Johnson & Co. (the Hyperion French Song Edition), one-offs on Elly Ameling albums, not to mention vintage recordings by Hahn himself. All the same, this recording was a complete revelation. Her beauty of tone, her ease with the French language (surpassing, I daresay, the much-vaunted Francophony of Felicity Lott), her canny selection of songs, Vignoles's sensitive accompaniment, they all add up. But there's that (ahem) je-ne-sais-quoi that makes something a classic, and this album has it. It captures an era, it creates a time and place that come wafting out of your speakers.
My favorite song on this record is "Si la nuit n'est pas ?toil?e" -- it is a rapturous melody to a quintessential Victor Hugo text. But there is nary a false note on the entire album. I do recommend, if you can find it, the Ameling album "Serenata," which includes two Hahn songs I haven't encountered elsewhere, "L'amiti?" with its faint melancholy and "La vie est belle" with its French ?lan.
As we know, Graham has gone on to much bigger things, but she retains her commitment to the art of song and to breathing fresh life into French rarities (as in her delightful operetta album). In terms of tone, timbre, and intonation, for my money she has the most beautiful voice in opera today. My only hope is that she doesn't go the way of Ren?e Fleming and become The Voice Beautiful ... she veered a bit in that direction with her recent Chausson record, and I hope she gets back to business and gets her vivid personality back in action in her song performances.

A very good Hahn collection.......2004-12-05
Lover of Marcel Proust, sought-after musical entertainer in the salons of the Highest Society, diarist, composer, singer, renowned conductor, influential music writer in the most powerful daily in France (Le Figaro) finally General Manager of the Opéra Comique before dying of a brain tumor in 1947, Hahn was a multi-faceted musician of the highest probity. His songs are simple, patrician, utterly elegant, and always set to the best poetry. His simplicity and purity of means accomplish in little what many pretentious thunderers fail even to approximate.
Hahn himself had a light little baritone voice, a little croak of a voice, really, with which he became popular in high society drawing rooms before the First World War: a voice that charmed duchesses and made the most reserved princesses smile. He even made some 50 records between 1920 and 1930, which show his unique, expressive musicality, unfailing sense of phrasing, elegance of style, and fine piano-playing (He almost invariably accompanies himself.)
Hahn's own 78s, and a very few others by the likes of Ninon Vallin, give a clear recorded testimony of how his songs ought to be performed: simply, elegantly, with charm.
Graham is a lovely singer and a supple musician. Her French is not exactly top-notch but most people will not care: they will respond to her beautiful sound and endearing manner. The pianist is also good.

If the American pop culture profile of French composer-jazz pianist Michel Legrand doesn't seem what it once was, don't be misled: his European indie film scores continue six decades on, now numbering nearly 200. But Legrand's most beloved work remains the lovely, evocative themes he created in the '60s and '70s, including "I Will Wait for You" from The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Thomas Crown Affair's "Windmills of Your Mind," the theme from Summer of '42, and his work on Barbra Streisand's Yentl. This collection marks Legrand's first solo piano recordings, presenting those and other film score highlights in spontaneously improvised performances that offer a glimpse of Legrand's musical soul. If, as in "Windmills," his enthusiasm gets the best of him and he occasionally lapses into flights of melodramatic pianistic self-parody, there are more than enough sublime moments here to compensate, especially on lesser-known songs like Best Friends' "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?," "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" from The Happy Ending, and Brian's Song's "Hands of Time." --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

This is a great CD! Sound is awesome. I highly recommend it.
Sunlight on his fingertips.......2005-08-10
The very bright talent of Michele Legrand you can feel especially when Maestro is playing piano himself.
I heard some orchestra performance of Legrand before, that was good, but I was still thinking about him just like about pop music composer.
Now I think different - he is Genius!
all the stars you've got.......2005-01-29
Before commenting on this rewarding disc, a few words about Legrand himself:
Is there a better songwriter or a more versatile all-around musican alive today? I think you have to go back to people like Gershwin and Billy Strayhorn to find a rough parallel to Legrand's multifaceted, genre-crossing genius. A pupil of Nadia Boulanger (who studied with Faure and taught many important American composers, including Aaron Copland and Philip Glass), Legrand is an heir of the great French tradition of music--but one who has chosen to express himself through popular songs, film scores, and jazz. He possesses that rare combination of an absolutely rigorous theoretical knowledge of music and an intuitive, spontaneous instinct for both melody and improvisation. He combines exquisite refinement with a popular touch, a need to communicate directly with all who love music. To me, his work represents the most perfect expression of such typically French traits as lightness, insouciance, wit, melodic charm, and direct emotional expression since Poulenc.
Here you'll find many of Legrand's signature songs--"I Will Wait for You," "The Windmills of Your Mind," "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?," "The Hands of Time," "You Must Believe in Spring," etc.--reharmonized and enriched in stunningly beautiful solo recreations. Those unfamiliar with Legrand's pianistic abilities will probably be surprised by what they hear, for he's no part-time piano tickler. He can easily hold his own in the company of the best modern jazz pianists. He has a wonderfully refined touch that is incapable of making a harsh sound and a profusive sense of fantasy that keeps you constantly guessing as to where the music will go next. Yet you always feel satisfied when you find out, because Legrand possesses a composer's comprehension of harmony and form. And his own style is in no way compromised by an occasional nod here and there toward Bill Evans, Erroll Garner, Rachmaninoff, and so on. (Please: disregard the Amazon reviewer's remark about "flights of melodramatic pianistic self-parody." It's called a stride chorus, and it's just one example of Legrand's surprising way of recasting these songs--and of his encyclopedic command of jazz styles.)
This disc represents the essence of Legrand. It really should have been recorded a long time ago, but the fact that it has captured his undiminished abilities as he enters his twilight years lends it an added poignance--a sense of "just in time!"--that makes it all the sweeter. If you're already a Legrand fan, it should be a self-recommending treasure, and if you're a fan of great piano playing or of sophisticated jazz treatments of great songs, odds are you'll find this a very rewarding disc indeed. For me, the highlight is this version of "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" in which every note seems inevitable--not at all an easy thing to make happen in an improvisation.
Miles Davis once said of a Duke Ellington recording, "Give that one all the stars you've got." That's the way I feel about this disc, and I thought that phrase "all the stars you've got" was appropriate because it almost sounds like the title of a Legrand song.
Maestro Legrand , at last !.......2004-10-10
From a summer of 42 , The windmills of your mind (The Thomas crown afair) , what are you doing the rest of your life or the romantic Umbrellas of Cherbourg ; all those unforgettable themes are played in this album for piano solo in the real intimacy between him and the listener .
Legrand is the golden master of soundtracks in France and one of the top in the world . He owns that inner vision to catch the spirit of every movie he accompains . He composes music as he was a real director movie . The psychological concerns , the romantic efluvies and the precise and lyrical atmosphere , with that touch of class, artistic elegance and sublime eloquency .
Think also in the important recordings with Miles Davis . That issue will give you the size of that artist and anothe point to remark . In 1954 , Legrand made a golden jewel : I lvoe Paris (See my review) that has become through the years in the most famous and the best album of instrumental music ever recorded .
What other background do you need to acquire this gem ?
For Jazz piano purest... Only!.......2002-09-07
graceful tones and notes, that create memories of a certain
time and place in each of our own lives.
When accompaned with great orchestration Its wonderful. When done in a jazz piano style, its not as good. Not to take anyting away from the talents of Mr Legrand as a pianist. Its just that like hearing a lusher, grander version of his music. So if you like jazz piano music, and Michele Legrand.
Then this is the cd for you!

Charm is not in oversupply in this Hyperion collection (the singers are rather wooden English people with somewhat grey voices) but the other qualities are honestly, conscientiously supplied. Many of these pieces are not easily come by, especially in such well-recorded, well-accompanied perfomances, and though Hahn might perhaps have smiled to hear such a straight-laced presentation of his little creations, this album is really quite worth the asking price.

When it comes to song writing, Ernest Chausson has long stood in the shadows of Debussy, Duparc, Fauré, and Ravel, but his gentle and self-effacing songs go so much further than the merely charming. To have the complete collection gathered on disc is a treat, and with artists like these, the performances are about as good as you could expect this side of the pearly gates. Ann Murray and Felicity Lott need no introduction for their celestial singing of this repertoire. The American baritone Chris Pedro Trakas is less well-known, but he comes with a clutch of top prizes and, more to the point, a beautifully sensitive voice, which he uses to great effect here.Underpinning everything is accompanist Graham Johnson, whose playing is always just so right, whatever area of the song repertoire he takes on, and who provides (uncredited) a must-read essay on Chausson that really engages with the music. Soprano Geraldine McGreevy is a welcome addition in two duets, as is the Chilingirian Quartet, accompanying Ann Murray in the final number, "Chanson perpétuelle." If a reason for a reassessment of Chausson's role as a writer of mélodie is needed, this marvelous set is overwhelmingly it. --Keith Clarke

Here is a fine recital debut by Iowa-born tenor Eric Cutler. Rather than recording another bunch of Italian and French opera arias, he has opted to give us groups of songs by Schumann, Liszt, Hahn and Barber. He's the real thing--a lyric tenor with impeccable diction in four languages, an ability to tell a story in song, and a gleaming top. In Schumann's Liederkreis the singer must express many moods, and even with a light voice, Cutler can convey, say, the horror in "Waldegesprach." The Liszt Petrarch Sonnets are perfect Italian arias and take the voice up to a high D flat which Cutler manages with ease and grace; his legato is pure and clean as well. Hahn was a fine melodist, and he can also be dark and serious, as Cutler demonstrates in "A Chloris;" in "Paysage," he is warm and sensitive. The four Barber songs are varied in mood and tone and Cutler makes each of them special. An auspicious debut album, even for those who normally shy away from song recitals. Bradley Moore is the excellent accompaniest. EMI has annoyingly omitted texts and translations, but perhaps that's how they have managed to keep the price so invitingly low.--Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:
A fine new tenor goes from the farm belt to the world stage!.......2006-12-19
Beyond any doubt, Mr. Cutler has an excellent instrument in his voice! He has just about all one could ask for there: beauty of tone, wide range, flexibility, and every level from a whisper to a ringing fortissimo. Moreover, he has great control and artistry in using it to the service of this demanding repertoire. To be sure, Cutler is a relative newcomer, and may have a few things yet to learn. But what's remarkable is that he's a great singer already; it's almost like finding a Stradivarius in the corn silo!
As for the complaints I've read, I am little impressed with them. (Complaints about language and diction are more persuasive when couched in good language themselves, e.g., not misusing "effect" for "affect" nor "compliment" for "complement.") Sure, everyone's entitled to his own likes and dislikes, but I think the vast majority of serious music listeners will welcome Mr. Cutler and his songs with a broad smile and a hearty embrace. And, considering his robust good looks, I imagine the women with whom he works on the concert or operatic stage will not find him at all hard to take.
So much for the general; here are a few random specifics:
I'm much impressed with his lowest register. Many tenors with such a fine high range get a bit weak and less controlled on the lowest notes. Not so Mr. Cutler. His lows are strong, clear, and beautiful, just as his highs are. The evenness of his tone quality over his entire and considerable range is truly outstanding!
Regarding diction, he gives one very little to find fault with. His German is excellent, as is his Italian; his French is pretty much on a par, as well. He obviously takes pains to make his lyrics clear, but I would not say that he's fussy. His enunciation is artistic and communicative.
Regarding interpretation, I find him performing at the same high level. There is plenty of nuance and emotional content, and because of his ability to move gracefully from a pianissimo to a rousing fortissimo he can be more expressive, perhaps, than singers less gifted in dynamic range.
As to the songs here, his delivery of the Schumann is great, and the Hahn also very fine. I'm less impressed with Liszt as a songwriter, but Cutler makes the Petrarch sonnets sound very well. I was not so familiar with the Barber songs, but after hearing them a few times I became a believer, both in their artistic quality and in Cutler's insightful performances of them.
In sum, Mr. Cutler gives every indication of a great singing career just getting started, and we may all look forward to what vocal riches lie in store. It is rare for a first CD to be so excellent and so satisfying; it looks like a star has been born!
In Bradley Moore we have a superb accompanist; it must have been inspiring for Cutler to have such a talent at his service. The beauty of Moore's playing is rare and precious!
The engineering of this CD seems excellent. The liner notes are good, and include welcome comments from Cutler himself. The absence of song texts and translations is not too serious, given that EMI provides all of them, except for those of the Barber songs, on its Internet website. (If you access the website, be warned that the order and numbering of the individual Hahn song texts there do not agree with those on the CD itself.)
I am pleased to find my initial assessment of Eric Cutler reinforced subsequently by his growing acclaim and the strong demand for his singing during the 3 years since this CD was released. (I only hope he doesn't take on too much and risk artistic burnout.)
If you like lieder recitals, you will enjoy this CD and will likely look forward to more from Mr. Cutler as eagerly as I do!
Outstanding new lyric tenor!.......2006-10-18

A Welcome New Tenor Voice.......2004-04-27
What grows in Iowa..........2004-04-04
To his credit, Mr. Cutler has solid technique. Unfortunately, technique does not make an artist. The fundamental element that is deficient here in both the cd and in the artist is HEART. If Mr. Cutler would only bother connecting with others, unveiling their humanity and revealing his own, then he would surely avoid the self conscious/self indulgent errors of relying solely on technique. Heart and humanity make an artist, a lesson Mr. Cutler is in dire need of learning.

The word "fabulous" seems vulgar when applied to the Spanish diva whose delicately shaded voice encompassed music from the middle ages to the present. This four-disc compilation emphasizes her song repertoire, to which she brought warmth, intelligence, linguistic integrity and irresistible sincerity. Her dignity makes listeners want to come to her, and she rewards them with an intimate, personal experience, especially in this small-scale repertoire by Ravel, Debussy, Duparc, Fauré, lots of Spanish composers and German masters such as Schubert and Brahms. --David Patrick StearnsCustomer Reviews:
Awesome musicality.......2006-07-26
The set comes with booklet including full words plus translations, helpful notes on De Los Angeles's concert career and a dozen of beautiful and rare black and white photos. Victoria de Los Angeles's concert career was as prolific as her legendary operatic performances and continued well after her retirement from the operatic stage. This introspective and almost encycopledic release is a real treat and is absolutely recommended. I totally agree with the editor's review who states that the word "fabulous" fails in every respect to fully capture the artistry of the Spanish soprano. Victoria de Los Angeles is definitely one of the most wonderful lyric sopranos of the 20th century and is one of the most heavenly artists to have ever graced the concert scene. A must-have for any collection.
Fabulous? Yes!!!.......1999-09-13
I was delighted to see Faure's "Claire de lune" on the album, and equally delighted with De Los Angeles' elegant rendition of this work. The only recording of the song I've liked better is from an LP featuring Frederika Von Stade.
As an added bonus, several duets with the great baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau are featured on Disk #4. These include some charming settings of Irish songs by Beethoven, and a gorgeous arrangement of "Let Us Wander" by Henry Purcell. I remember hearing these duets years ago on an LP recording, and it was a pleasure to hear them again.
