About the Artist
Kekuhi's music, in fact Kekuhi, is a product of her culture and an amazing family tree linked to the history of these islands. Everything that will perpetuate the Hawaiian culture has been laid before Kekuhi. She has drunk deeply from that body of knowledge and now begins to shape and develop a new energy of Hawaiian music...music that extracts from the origins of these islands and clearly demonstrates what it means to be Hawaiian in the late 20th century.

A distinctly Hawaiian experience.......2002-06-12

The power and beauty of her singing may be lost on those not familiar with Hawaiian music and culture, but this wide-ranging album will touch any Hawaiian or Hawaiian at heart. Her mastery of the language and emotional delivery is astounding. Her vocal stylings are obviously heavily influenced by traditional chant, but she also shows a rich alto voice for love songs. Although most of these songs are original compositions, you'll quickly recognize the idioms of Hawaiian music, along with some unique touches. My favorites are "Lovely Hinahina" and "Pua Milo", both will give a Hawaiian music lover chicken skin! If you got a kick out of Keali'i's "Nematoda", you'll recognize Kekuhi Kanahele's distinctive voice.

I love this CD. I have several other CD's by Kekuhi and they're all great. Her voice is rich and full of depth. These songs take me back to Hawai'i. I highly recommend Honey Boy. Mahalo, Aloha.

It's all about the voice.......2004-09-29

More than anything, it's the sound of Kekuhi's voice that makes her one of my favorite artists. I don't know of anyone out there making recordings who sounds like her...capable of great strength and gentleness, of boldness and coyness, humor and passion, of old and new. Kekuhi taps deep into the classic Hawaiian musical forms, infusing even her modern-sounding songs with what I can only describe as "the Hawaiian soul."

As a Hawaiian, I find that her music speaks directly to me. Each song evokes images, emotions and memories of home and family. Kekuhi's version of "Kauhale O Kamapua'a" is one of my favorite songs...ever. I can't listen to it without getting a little choked up, because her rendition reaches right into your heart.

Kekuhi takes many artistic risks, and the results are refreshing and original. There's a strong hula influence on this CD (sounds that way to me) and her style may not appeal to the casual listener looking for some music to remind them of their Hawaiian vacation, or looking for one of those New Agey CDs.

The music is beautiful and evocative. There is truth and authority in her voice and singing style, and a lot of soul in her interpretations of songs, and the lyrics or her own songs, as well.

Album Description

Hawaiian music in its truest form is best embodied in "oli" (vocal chanting that is not danced to) and "mele hula" (chants accompanied by dance and implements). Once the foundation for a vital oral tradition, this music has remained relatively pure despite the ceaseless introduction of new instruments and musical styles to the islands. The 20 recordings performed on "Uwolani" document creation chants (ko'ihonua) "mele inoa" (name chants), chants to honor the deities and ceremonies, and chants that recognize the beauty of the places, winds and rains of Hawai'i. "Uwolani" is meant to both entertain and inform. Lyrics and literal translations are provided, and listeners are encouraged to continue their journey of learning and discovery.

this is a great little 4-track CD of two brothers from the island of Ni'ihau. Malaki and (the late) Nahale Kanahele. It is available for $5 new from various sources on the internet. great music from these two guys. If you like Kekuhi Kanahele-Frias music, you will like this too. It's very authentic and very Hawaiian.

Unique...honest...daring.......2005-01-12

Kekuhi is one of my favorites for several reasons: She takes risks in her music with refreshing and original results; she is wonderful at bringing together the ancient and the modern in her music; but more than anything, it's the sound of Kekuhi's voice that I love the most.

You can tell it's all about the music with Kekuhi...it feels as thought she's putting her heart into each song, breathing life into them. I don't know of anyone out there who sounds quite like her. Her voice and style are distinctively Hawaiian, to my ears. Kekuhi taps deep into the roots of classic Hawaiian musical styles and forms, infusing each song with what would be best described here as "Hawaiian soul." This album may reach back deeper than her others. I'm Hawaiian and I find that her music speaks directly to me and I never grow tired of listening to her.

Haunting and Strong.......2000-11-28

These original tunes feel like Hawaii to me. Charged with energy and tradition, these songs will transport you not to a fake Tiki-filled hotel lounge, but to the mist-kissed mountains, and the rainy warmth of Hilo. I have listened to this CD many times in Hawaii, and am buying another to take me there on cold winter nights. Some of the songs combine Hawaiian and English, which I found a bit jarring. The words, thank goodness, are written in the CD liner in Hawaiian with the English translation, unlike most other Hawaiian CD's. This goes a long way to educating us haoles, and greatly enhanced my enjoyment.

Kekuhi Kanahele's first album, "Kekuhi," is Hawaiian music at its very best. If you ever get a chance to see this woman, and her husband/co-songwriter Kaipo Frias, perform, by all means do so. She is da' real kine! This album has incredible range of traditional songs, chants and more contemporary songs.

Essence of Hawaii in Kekuhi.......2000-02-06

This CD brought tears to my eyes. Kekuhi's powerful and primal voice resonates with the essential magic of Hawaii. Of Hawaiian descent, I felt transported to the home of my people.

When will you put sound clips up for us to hear? .......1999-07-13

I thought if anyone would have clips of this, you guys would.. oh well. Currently preparing for trip to Hawaii by reading various guidebooks.. #1 musician mentioned in Fodor's is Kekuhi Kanahele, and I would very much like to be able to hear this music that allegedly combines "ancient Hawaiian chants with modern melodies." So put some sound clips up so I can listen and see if I wanna order it from you guys!
