The Habana of old.......2007-06-26

If you have an ounce of nostalgia for old Cuba as portrayed in novels such as Oscar Hijuelos, "a Simple Habana Melody" you will fall under the spell of these practitioners of traditional Cuban "Son". Their tenor smooth voices and perfect harmonies may sound a bit too polished at first if you are used to the sound of Buena Vista Social Club, but I believe it is just as authentic and close to sound of those trios of Afro-Caribean singers my Spanish Grandfather used to love to hear in the Habana of the 20s and 30s.

It's really hard to put into words just how blissful and enthralling the album Cantinero de Cuba truly is. With only one release, Cubamar has become my favourite band. As hasty as that sounds, there is a substantial reason the other customer reviews have been enthusiastic. The level of musicianship from such a modest line-up and the dreaminess of each track will transport any listener (regardless of politics) to a haven for the senses.

No it's not perfect. Yes, some of the tracks go on a bit, and yes, I play it all the time. Maybe it's the infectious enthusiam of these guys - you can tell they're having a blast, and you will think from the rich harmonies that there's at least half a dozen of them - or maybe it's the open, clean sound (hats off to the technical team). Whatever it is, this CD practically lives in my player- give it a try.

Love songs in spanish........2001-09-10

I liked this CD the first time I heard it, but after repeated listening I have grown to LOVE it. To me this is the hallmark of good music.
Cantinero De Cuba contains some of the most lovely harmonies I have heard in a long time. The songs are very beautiful and some are very romantic.

Smooth vocals and superb guitar!.......2000-02-15

Fans of the Bueno Vista Social Club will probably enjoy this group! Smaller (a trio) and more polished, their vocals are stirring and the guitar is excellent. They are a little less soulful than BVSC, more romantic, and a bit quieter.

Top notch stuff!
