Not Recommended - Poor Sound Quality.......2007-05-16

Unless you are willing to put up with poor sound quality - do not purchase this CD. I returned it immediately as my HiFi reproduced the CD 'as is' - including the poor quality recording. It was not pleasing to the ears.

I highly recommend Sacred Spirit, Vol. 2: More Chants and Dances of the Native Americans and Sacred Spirit: Chants and Dances of the Native Americans. I have not got over them yet and I consider them the finest of Native American music. I purchased them at the Grand Canyon during our tour of the USA. They are currently in promotion at Amazon.(Discounted price).

MOST LIKELY UNLAWFUL.......2006-11-23

These recordings were probably recorded without permission; hence, the lack of named singers and inappropiately named songs. There is a mixture of traditional pow wow and competion pow wow songs (not to mention the inappropiate recording of ceremonial songs) on this cd. The poor recorded tracks speaks for themselves that they are most likely unlawfully recorded.

Authentic Native American Music containes performances of sincere clarity and direction to seek support from the supreme spirit. Every note is masterly played... Every voice has a well- trained quality. Truly amazing sound quality.

Old but authentic.......2000-09-06

I used to have an audiotape with many of these songs on it which I got 20 years ago. I think these songs might have been originally recorded on wax cylinders, hence the scratchy quality. The songs are old, maybe from around 1900 to 1930s. These songs are not like the ones you will find at modern powwows today but are a rare collection of the old-time songs from another era. Geared more toward the serious student rather than the casual listener. For powwow music, I would recommend any of the more modern releases.

The Real Deal.......2000-07-02

If anyone has ever wondered what kind of music they might have at a Pow Wow, this is it. This is the authentic, 'hardcore' stuff. You can listen to this drumming and chanting and simply lose yourself in it. It will carry you away. Only if you were at an actual ceremony would it be more authentic. It is beautiful to listen to and wonderful to imagine to. Let your heart soar with the eagles.

Very basic info in liner notes but the music is great!!!!!!!.......2005-01-29

I love the sound of the recordings on this CD. My favorites are the Navajo Hoop Dance Song, which has an entrancing verse melody and rhythm and also the group-sung Shawnee Stomp Song, which sounds like a long-lost cousin to some early African American songs I have heard. I discovered this visiting the lone prarie, so it has special meaning to me.
The recording quality varies but most songs sound excellent. One can always read about the music in other sources since the info on the inside cover here is very general.

VIOLATION OF PRIVACIES...........2002-02-04

THE NATIVE AMERICAN invited many into this sanction of the world. I do not own this CD but just in listening to the long time private ceremonial songs and dances of ritual puts an earnest feeling of VIOLATION of rights of others on my mind. I feel as though I HAVE INTRUDED upon a very personal space. One that should be left for the eyes and ears of those for whom the ritual is being performed. LISTENING for purpose OTHER THAN to learn to perform the ritual on a reservation MYSELF... is like having spectators attend my pap smear! This one should remain a PRIVATE AFFAIR!

Under-documented re-release.......2001-09-12

This set reproduces the recordings on a quite old boxed set of phonograph records. The documentation is brief and general and pretty much useless. However, if one is already somewhat familiar with this repertoire, there are several beautiful and unusual tracks, such as the Korean War Veterans' song. There is a wholly unrecommendable condensed version of this 2-CD set which leaves out some of the original recordings (leaving out the Korean War item too).
