3 out of 5 stars when is it classic and when is it stale?.......2007-04-05

I didn't enjoy this cd as much as I expected. Guess it's all in the ears of the reviewer. I had heard too much like it before and it wasn't strong enough as a classic to hold my interest.

5 out of 5 stars great compilation.......2006-11-08

this CD is a compilation of Tito Puente's music, mostly recorded in the 50's and early 60's. Every selection is a winner, and if you are just getting started listening to Tito Puente's music, this is a good jumping off point. However, please note: this is not a CD of strictly "mambo" or "salsa" music, there are other selections here that do not fit that category, although all of the tunes are Latin in flavor.

5 out of 5 stars Should be better known.......2006-06-16

I had the pleasure of attending a Tito Puente concert a few years before his death. The man loved what he was doing and his concert was full of joyous, dancable music. Salsa is more popular now than when Puente started his career so you would think that more people would be interested in his music. This is the type of cd to listen in the background or to just dance non stop. Too bad more people will not have the joy of listening to his live concerts.

5 out of 5 stars A great first Tito Puente album.......2004-04-10

Get a great introduction to the early work of Tito Puente, El Rey, the King. Tito Puente, salsa extraordinaire and father of afro-jazz, was an incredible talent who will be long remembered. This CD is the perfect collection to get started with Puente's vast library.

Smooth latin grooves are guaranteed on every track. Scary tribal rhythms shine through on Dance of the Headhunters. As one of my friends said, if you don't bob your head to Ti Mon Bo, you probably don't have a pulse. Night Ritual, Hong Kong Mambo, and El Cayuco would rank as some of my favorites if I had to choose, but thankfully I don't.

Informative liner notes give a good history lesson about Tito's roots, how he begun, and how he lasted and played amazing music even into his older years. Puente will certainly be remembered for one of the longest lasting, highest quality musicians the world has ever seen.

A great stepping stone for other Puente albums, this will give a brief introduction to many of the styles Puente cultivated over the years. I suggest Mambo Birdland: Dancemania, a live album from the late 1990s, as a wonderful chance to hear Puente and his full orchestra in rare form, playing a live show in the Palladium, decades after his playing originally sparkled there.

A high quality album all around, a great beginning to more Puente albums. Highly recommended to any newcomers to salsa who have interest. As the liner notes proclaim, El Rey esta meurte: long live the King!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-08-18

Hot selection of Salsa dance tracks.
This UK label has great salsa compilations.I also recommend getting "The Beginners guide to Salsa" also on Nascente.(bad choice of title ,there is nothing "beginner" about it)I plan to get every salsa title on Nascente and the defunct UK Charly that I can find.
The UK CD Mastering and pressing of Nascente's CDs is superb. The sound quality is audiophile .Compare the sound to any USA Fania CD and you will be amazed.

2 out of 5 stars Best of not so best..........2007-07-06

I'm a big fan of Joe Cuba's music which is why I bought this Best of Joe Cuba Sextet, but this best of album released by Charly is not so great.

The songs are of low quality (to the point of being muffled). They even went as far as trying to remix the original songs such as Bang Bang (one of my favorite Joe Cuba songs), which came out poorly. Advice to record distributors trying to make a quick buck with best of albums, don't mess with original classics. If so, then make it clear to the consumer and don't try to pass it off as a Best of album featuring classic "originals". Call it the "Best of poorly done re-mixes done on the cheap album".

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection.......2006-01-07

I would suggest that this compilation is very good indeed. I grew up listening to Perez on vinyl and this CD has several primo tunes from several of his very early 60s or late 50s albums. Couldn't agree less with the other review. Quality is high & the beats will get you dancin'!!

3 out of 5 stars Odd mix of originals and rerecordings.......2003-03-17

Supposedly, this piece from the Camden subsidiary of U.K. RCA is a collection of the "very best" of the King of Mambo, Perez Prado. And while the infectious, mostly-mambo melodies are great listening fun, the idea that these are "originals" as indicated on the jewel box spline just ain't true. Most of these tracks are 1959 stereo rerecordings of the earlier hit and album versions although there are a few original mono versions here. Apparently, the compiliers either did not know what they were grabbing from the tape vaults or just opted for the seemingly superior-sounding later stereo recordings. Though not necessarily inferior and actually sonically superior to the flatter, older mono originals, some of these stereo versions are considerably and sometimes annoyingly dissimilar - "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" being one of the most egregious. Musically, totally enjoyable but if you're a purist looking for the original hit versions, pass this up and try to get the now out-of-print Rhino piece done back in the mid-90's even though that collection has fewer tracks. Until someone comes along with an all-inclusive original hits package of Prado's work, these pieces will have to fill the bill.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best Of the Cha Cha Cha- Vol.1.......2000-05-07

Incredibly good! Is the least you can say when in one CD you have such a variety of great afro-cuban orchestras and bands of yesteryear, interpreting recordings previously unheard for decades. Listen to Ninon Mondejar & his Orquesta America in Mexico interpret "La Basura", Belisario Lopez & His Orchestra in "El Cimarron", Beny More with Ernesto Duarte & His Orch. in "Cha-Cha-Cha", El Gran Fellove in "El Jamaiquino", Orquesta Enrique Jorrin featuring Fernando Alvarez in "Los Marcianos", Orquesta Aragon in the original version, first generation master tape recording of "Cachita", etc. etc. This BMG/Tropical Series 1996 re-issue will leave you "asking for seconds". Another great compilation in unprecedented brilliance in sound by series producer Domingo Echevarria & his recording engineer Dick Baxter.
