This ambitious effort shows Mo' Wax label guru James Lavelle taking on the role of director, orchestrating a grand design, and translating it musically with the talents of studio muse DJ Shadow. Most accustomed to working solo, Shadow demonstrates here his adaptable talents in collaborating with others, whether it's on the powerful "Rabbit in Your Headlights," a track recorded in 1996 in which Radiohead lead singer Thom Yorke eerily foreshadows his later success, or in "Guns Blazing (Drums of Death Pt. 1)," the album's only traditional hip-hop track, which pairs annihilating beats to Kool G Rap's equally lethal vocal delivery. Psyence Fiction, which also features contributions from Beastie Boy Mike D and the Verve's Richard Ashcroft, is certainly one of the most epic and eclectic records to emerge from the electronic world this year, one that should not only further the efforts to bridge the musical segregation that exists among the hip-hop, alternative, and electronic camps but also introduce these cultures to a few new surprises of its own. --Tamara Palmer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Trip-Hop's Top Album.......2007-06-24

In my opinion, Psyence Fiction is one Trip-Hop's finest hours. You get the gritty Shadow production, the infectious Lavelle beats and a bucketload of New York shtick courtesy of Mr Mike D. The album has an edgy, atmospheric sound that enthralls the listener with varying degrees of light and shade. One minute you're exploring the desperate depths of isolation in "Lonely Soul," the next you're being blasted by a butane torch of agression in "Drums of Death." This musical mood-shifting is what gives Psyence Fiction the edge over the relatively monotomous themes found in albums like Mezzanine and Dummy. Featuring guest appearances by Thom Yorke and Richard Ascroft, Psyence Fiction is a must for any true trip-hop fan.

3 out of 5 stars An U.N.K.L.E. For All Seasons.......2007-01-30

DJ Shadow and James Lavelle come together in this trippy, mood-laced CD, an ambitious attempt to blend together not just genres, but also a variety of musicians and their trademark styles. DJ Shadow's skills at mixing and melding are pushed to the hilt, strained to the breaking point, and -- in a few cases -- completely absent.

Where his work is, it shines. "Bloodstain" is a slick, acrylic gloom pop number featuring Alice Temple. Thom Yorke's unmistakeable voice paddles peacefully through the waters of "Rabbit In Your Headlights," a tune that sounds like a UFO's torch-song. The symphonic strings and slithers of "Lonely Soul" are wound up tightly with Richard Ashcroft's fervent vocals. These and others bear the watermark of artists creating something whole and substantial.

Others don't fare so well. The two hard rap numbers (Kool G Rap's "Guns Blazing" and Mike D's "The Knock") do contain patches of DJ Shadow's music-mosaics, but the lyrics are uninspired and sound rote. The main title theme is fully DJ Shadow's, every wickedly, ambiently funky moment of it, but it also lacks a foundation, something to give it closure.

The rest of this star-studded album could be said to suffer from a similar problem (although it doesn't suffer much): there's not much that grounds these songs together. For that reason, it's likely you'll find one or two songs that don't fit your style, but it's equally likely that you'll find some that do. In the mood for rushing digi-rock? Badly Drawn Boy's got you covered with "Nursery Rhyme/Breather." Want synthetic box pop? Check out "Celestial Annihilation." How about gloomy junk dub, throaty ballads, or spoken-sample mixes?

It's all here. If you grab this album, I doubt you'll like everything you get, but you'll definitely find something that's up your alley, whether that alley is lined with strobe lights or fog lamps, with dark curtains or neon tinsel.

4 out of 5 stars a decent cd.......2006-08-27

it is a little outdated now, but it may have been ahead of it's time when originally released (1998). i had to check it out since i am a HUGE DJ Shadow fan. but it wasn't bad.

5 out of 5 stars A barely classic album with several cool guest appearances (Radiohead's Thom Yorke!) - has great mainstream appeal.......2006-01-05

U.N.K.L.E.'s "Psyence Fiction" is a great turntablist album (the duo is made up of the legendary DJ Shadow and also James Lavelle) that even has lots of mainstream appeal. Several different styles are present here - a little trip-hop...a little hard rock...really cool stuff. The beats are foottappers and are mostly magnificent - you'll definitely love playing most of these songs. Several pretty cool cameos fill this album - guest appearances by Radiohead's Thom Yorke, The Verve's Richard Ashcroft, The Beastie Boys' Mike D, Kool G Rap, Alice Temple, and Talk Talk's Mark Hollis are great. The songs are usually quite complex and the lyrics are usually pretty interesting if you can make them out. Except for perhaps "Chaos", there aren't any bad songs here. U.N.K.L.E. goes through several different moods and pacings throughout the album which helps in keeping the songs fresh. One song, which arguably doesn't belong, is "Nursery Rhyme Breather" which features a hard rockin' guitar and incomprehensible lyrics (it's still interesting). At first listen I would've given this 4.5 stars, but after several listens I realize that with its great standouts (like "Unkle Main Title Theme") and it's mainstream appeal that this is a fantastic album to own. Giving "5" stars was, admittedly, a tough decision. It may be barely a classic, but it's still great fun! Highly recommended!

Highlights include:
the entire album ("Chaos" is arguably the weakest)

4 out of 5 stars Psyence Fiction.. More like Psyence Fact.......2005-11-19

DJ Shadow is a genius when it comes to his own tracks. This cd isn't just DJ Shadow so therefore he didn't have nearly the control that he does on his solo projects. There are a few tracks to skip over. For example, track 6, I think it's supposed to be a parody commercial or something. I don't know. I just dont like it that much. Track 7, any track that starts out with loud amounts of feedback dont really appeal to me. Although, I did like Tracks 1,4,5,8, and 11.

5 out of 5 stars "Psyence" contains some of hide's best songs.......2007-04-21

At least five of the songs on this album -- Hi-Ho, Beauty and Stupid, Bacteria, Good Bye, Misery -- are among his best. I would not give "Psyence" the low rating among hide's four albums.

5 out of 5 stars hi-de .......2007-01-13

hide was one of the most talented rock musicians to ever come out of Japan. He was the whole package of image, style and musicianship. His songs still inspire and tug at peoples cores now, just as they will for years to come. His music burrows from all cultures there are classical, samba, metal, electronica and just good rock. This CD does not dissapoint. There are many examples of his style and talent exemplified in this alblum. I know its hard to get this alblum in America but I have "aquired" all his CD's over the internet. Now a short list of what to look forward to on this alblum.

1: Misery. To me this is the stand out track. This track if performed by an American rock band would have garnered radio support. Just a fun song end to end. Alot of fun to play on guitar. Nice harmonics and guitarwork.

2: Hi Ho. This song has awesome solo sections by Pata and is my second favorite song on this cd. Also at the end there is a great latin strumming pattern which keeps it inspiring till the end.

3: Beauty Stupid. A poppy hook laiden catchy tune. Layers and layers of hooks and rockablilly esqe guitars. Very nice. Great solo here too. hide's virtuosity shows lightly during the solo.

4: Good bye. A very downbeat track. Easy to play along with just an A chord progression with a C,G,D,A progression too. Beautiful song.

5: Genkai Haretsu. Great song great chorus. Like most of his songs very poppy and catchy. He was a riff master. He burrows from so many diffrent musical styles its hard to list..

6: OEDO COWBOYS. A filler track sort of like his song "Love Replica". Very good and catchy with a techno beat and a classical note structure. Very hide.

If you at all like hide or Japanese music or just masters of their craft. I know for newcomers this music is hard to get at first. It will take multiple listens. But when it gets you it gets you. And you will see why so many people were upset at his passing. I know if he were alive today he would have been more prominant in America. He was on the verge of exploading worldwide. In my mind he was the Kurt Cobain of Japan. And I.. no we all miss him dearly.

3 out of 5 stars The "Psyence" of hide's music somehow overrated.......2004-09-25

Essentially, the pink-haired one helped create an opulence and musical appreciation that branched far beyond its birthplace in the land of the rising sun; yet even after the disbanding of progenitor X Japan in 1997, guitarist Hideto Matsumoto pursued his individual skills and personal style to a far greater level through solo experimentation--and welcomed all who shared his vision. The consequential result was a rabid "hide fandom" that still survives to this day, some six years after his untimely death; and a humbling legacy of joint and solo compositions that will undoubtedly inspire and educate many to come. It is to be admitted, however, that "hide hysteria" often colors fans prematurely, and causes them to forget that hide was human--and that not everything he touched turned to gold. Therefore I now court the displeasure of many by explaining why I believe hide's "Psyence" to be sub-par, considering his unusual talent and ambition:

Although already familiar with most of hide's songs, THE SELECTION AS IT IS ARRANGED ON "PSYENCE" does not stick out in my mind as being of particular interest, nor do the compositions complement one another with any distinct synergy. A definite complaint is the fact that, despite having been recorded in stereo sound, the disc comes across almost as though it is monolog--watered down and lacking depth to the character of the individual instruments. I also find hide's arrangements (NOT his incorporation of musical styles) to be predictable after the first few songs. Granted, a number of his pieces were intended as parallels ("Flame" and "Misery" are opposite sides of the same coin, and the opening and closing tracks--"Psyence" and "Atomic M.O.M"--are both obviously the product of James Bond/U.N.C.L.E. influences), yet the entire listen seems a frenetic rush of compositions too similar in structure and form.

Simply put, to me, "Psyence" is not one of hide's greatest personal achievements, leaving me neither awestruck nor reflective after its finale (as notable much of his other work has). Perhaps I am just a J-Rock fan who is too picky for her own good, but we ARE talking the cream of the crop here. While I personally consider Sugizo (ex-Luna Sea) to be my greatest musical inspiration, my all-around favorite guitarist and rock personality, hide most definitely deserves recognition as one of the most skilled and prominent characters of the J-Rock stage: Mediocrity from hide, therefore, is unacceptable.

All of this aside, the songs of "Psyence" are relatively catchy and the instrumentation skillfully edited and creatively performed. While the music of hide's solo career is very different from the consuming epics he helped sculpt with X Japan--being more modern in composition and obviously lacking Yoshiki's powerful aura--many newer listeners undoubtedly will welcome their simplicity. Enfin, "Psyence" reveals hide to be the entertaining, if vaguely ostentatious, savant he always was; but perhaps it is a collection of his studio works not as perfect as had been expected.

5 out of 5 stars One of THE best albums of all time.......2003-08-30

I truly believe that 'Psyence' by Hide is one of the greatest albums ever created. It's such a shame that Hide never really broke into the western market as people are really missing out on some of the best rock music ever created.

This album is so brilliant that I won't even attempt to go through it song by song - although I would like to say that aside from two short interludes (Odeo Cowboys and Cafe le Psyence), every track on this album is phenomenal. Not a weak point anywhere. The reason why I disclude the interludes is because they are not *really* actual songs, but serve rather to give the album a sense of cohesiveness.

My main point for writing this review is this: Don't be put off by the fact that this album is (mostly) in Japanese. I found that not being able to understand the majority of the lyrics actually enhanced my listening experience. It's hard to explain why, but I think it may be because a) it allows you to focus on the music, and b) it allows you to focus on the way Hide sings, not what he sings. Even though I can't understand what he's saying, I still find songs like 'Goodbye' and 'Flame' extremely powerful.

If you are considering buying this album, do not hesitate. I do not usually say this about albums, but I think in this case it is justified. 'Psyence' rides a thin line of simultaneously being original and innovative while also being very listener - friendly (unlike, for example, Mr. Bungle). In short, it has unlimited universal appeal.

Oh, and everything I just said? Ditto for his other two albums, Ja Zoo and Hide Your Face.

5 out of 5 stars Psyence and Psycomunity by Hide!.......2002-01-20

I'll say shortly. I lve this album. I love his songs and I think that if you are a fan of J Rock, or rock at all, yo should have the CD. He was kind of a father, an idol for sure, for many great guitarists, as he was as brilliant, as he was. He was one of the best guitarists living at that time and had a great talent. The CD is really worth having, if only for Good Bye, LEMONED I scream, Misery or DOD.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2004-01-09

I couldn't disagree more with BjA from USA.
This disc is fantasic and people I know who appreciate british rock music agree.

DJ Shadow is a genius and teaming with James Lavelle to form UNKLE is sheer brilliance. The production is tight featuring tough drum beats and a stellar list a guest artists, almost a "who's who" in british rock (Richard Ashcroft, Badly Drawn Boy, Thom Yorke, and if you seek out the UK Import, Ian Brown, former front man of the Stone Roses, contributes "Be There"). To top it off, they recruited Mike D. from the Beastie Boys for "The Knock."

If you like the Verve, Radiohead, or british rock, you will definitely enjoy this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Scary, sad, surreal, unprecedented.......2003-04-13

I borrowed this soon after it came out in late 1998 but I didn't listen to it all the way through. It's taken me this long to get around to doing that and I wish I did back then. It refers to a realm that's sort of on Earth but sort of not. It tells stories and says things that are uncomfortable but absorbing and mesmerizing, and takes you to places that you don't want to leave. You can really "put aside the everyday world."

5 out of 5 stars Good CD..........2000-05-22

This is Great Cd ... it will sound "lame" if only you dont like the type of music this is ... its kind of like a person ... that has listened to rock all there life . .and then listened to some rap ... pretty much that person will not like rap .. same way with this cd ... if you dj shadow kind of music .. then this is a cd for you ...

5 out of 5 stars Nope, it's fab........2000-04-28

You are astoundingly wrong, though you are right about the people involved in this being talented as well. I usually hate this sort of music but I can't get enough of this album, especially Richard Ashcroft's 'Lonely Soul'. Immense fun and good to dance and play on the computer to. The Beastie Boys track is a bit rubbish in a 'funny because it is rubbish' kind of way. When they sing 'gonna break it down in the Unkle way!' I cringe with barely concealed embarrased amusement.

1 out of 5 stars ridiculous.......2000-03-24

This really is just the regular version of the album, with Be There tacked on at the end. For those who don't know, shortly after the album came out, they released a single called Be There, which is basically Unreal with vocals by the Stone Roses' Ian Brown. I prefer Unreal myself, but you might disagree. If you can find this version cheap enough, it's worth it. If it's being sold at a huge markup, try and find the single instead.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music - Packaging Needs Help.......2007-06-21

I'm not sure if the effects of the CD can match the claim or not (we shall see...) but the music IS really, really good. Very trancey, some dancey and lots of tribal/world music & atmospheric sounds. If you like Delirium, Enigma or downbeat/chill you will love this album a lot. It's definitely more 'modern' sounding and uses many different virtual instrumentation passages that are artfully arranged. Nicely recorded as well. I love popping this in and driving to work during my 'alone time', it really helps inspire some great visualizations (for me). However, don't expect fancy packaging: I thought the price was a bit steep for receiving a store bought slimline jewel case with a one-sided paper handmade insert. And the disc itself is blank. You have to be aware of what side you are putting in because there is absolutely no artwork or print on it. I've made my own cds before, and for a tiny bit extra they could have had the CDs printed at least, or had regular sized jewel cases....but that's just my personal taste perhaps. I also know that musicians are screwed out of their money in lots of other ways so maybe the extra price is partly Amazon's cut and only a portion goes to the artist (I don't doubt). Besides, it's always nice to support independent artists, so I didn't really mind. Either way, it is really lovely and unusual music for you to meditate to, groove to or imagine to. I usually have it on at work all day...I recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars Life Altering.......2007-03-04

I am an individual who respects and defines music by the effect it has on the listener. I must say, with this music, its very simple. You go in expecting one thing, and you end up getting something you couldn't imagine.

Just Listen. Put it in your CD player and press play. Watch the effect it has on your emotions, psyche, dreams, and external life LONG AFTER the music stopped.

Just listen...thats it. You have no idea the ride you're in for.
