5 out of 5 stars if memory serves me correctly.......2007-07-21

then this CD is from the Babylon By Bus tour (1976), which really jump-started Bob Marley's popularity here in the USA. Like Babylon, this is also a live CD, although it is recorded in a much smaller venue, LA's Roxy, right up on Sunset Boulevard, right next to The Rainbow, and down the block from the Whisky A Go Go. anyone who likes Bob Marley will enjoy this CD, every song is great.

4 out of 5 stars Gift for a good friend.......2007-04-08

I was pleased how quickly this CD arrived. It was a birthday present for a dear friend, so I haven't heard it yet, however, I'm sure it's excellent. After all, it's by Bob Marley.

5 out of 5 stars Long Live Bob.......2007-02-03

This is an awesome CD. Many hours of listening pleasure to anyone who purchases this product.

5 out of 5 stars Poetry In Motion.......2007-01-11

With the pace of the arrangements adding even more powerful meaning to the vocals and music, Bob Marley & The Wailers deliver an astounding concert before an appreciative audience in a small club on Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California, during the Rastaman Vibration tour.

The pristine sound captures Marley at his poetic best, as his songs of protest & redemption draws the listener into the music. The performance touches the senses in highly subtle ways, which are uniquely found in Want More & No Woman No Cry. The vocal interplay between Marley & Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt tugs at your soul.

Even the obligatory - for American rock audiences - I Shot the Sheriff is delivered with an added punch. The extraordinary set (Disc One) culminates with Rat Race, with the band returning (Disc Two) for an encore of 28 minutes; Positive Vibration and Get Up Stand Up/No More Trouble/War.

This is Marley the artist at the peak of his creative powers and one of the best live performances ever captured on CD.

5 out of 5 stars Best live album ever!.......2007-01-10

When I look at my music collection in its entirety, my favorite albums tend to be the live ones, recorded at small halls or large arenas (think DMB, Zeppelin, U2, Frampton, Stones, Doors, etc). There is something unique, exhilarating, and almost unattainable about capturing the greatness mixed with spontaneity of live music. Live at the Roxy is my all time favorite live album. Incredibly good sound quality, just the right volume of crowd interaction, and Marley's poetic, lyrical leadership at the peak of his grasp of the power of his message and sound all combine to make this concert a priceless jewel. If you're like me, you'll put this double cd set in your car stereo and leave it in there for weeks. Makes you want to grow dreads and join the cause.

Even if Social Distortion have lost some their edge on more recent studio releases, this new live set is solid proof that the band's musical urgency is still intact. Seventeen years of classic Orange County, California, punk is represented over 17 tracks, as the band moves through speaker-rattling alternative-radio hits like "Bad Luck," "Let It Be Me," and "Ball & Chain." Singer Mike Ness's rockabilly roar is in fine form, as is the grinding rock energy his bandmates put out. Recorded over three nights at Los Angeles's historic Roxy nightclub, the disc serves as a great testament to one of America's finest punk bands. --Aidin Vaziri

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Next Best Thing To Being There..........2007-03-30

Social Distortion has always been known for its live show. This CD really is the next best thing to being there. Live albums usually are a very mixed bag; however, this one lives up to all of the expectations. The sound quality is amazing and the setlist is a nearly perfect selection of their live performances during that era (it should have included sick boy though). It is also notable because this is the last Social Distortion recording featuring Dennis Danell before his death.

The only thing that could have been done better on this album is that the tracks should have started at the beginning of the songs rather than beginning with Mike Ness's long speeches before each tune. Sometimes, it would be preferrable to just hear the songs without having to listen to or fast forward through Mike's views on the punk rock scene, the establishment, the "old days", or the government. Still, that really is the only complaint about this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Great even for the casual Social D fan.......2007-01-05

I consider myself a casual fan of Social Distortion, and this disk is pretty good. The sound is good, and the energy is excellent. Even Mike Ness's cheesy commentaries between songs are worth listening to. I also bought this disk for musicians I know, because Social D, especially LIVE Social D, should be required listening for anyone performing music onstage.

Highlights, IMO, are Ball and Chain, Prison Bound, Ring of Fire, I Was Wrong. It's worth checking out whether you LOVE SD, are a casual fan, or never even heard their music before.

5 out of 5 stars live.......2005-10-29

1 hour ago just saw Social Distortion Live in Atlanta. People yelled all the way through the concert. Whoops and yells spilling out on the street after the concert. "Live" is the best word for this band when you see them in concert. "Live" for both girls and guys. All seemed to linger after the concert. Total adrenalin. Why see the Rolling Stones live when you can see the real deal?

Some things are totally fresh after 20 years. How is that possible? 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Transition album for Mike Ness.......2005-09-28

It's during Ball and Chain, more than Ring of Fire, where you can FEEL the Johnny Cash influence on Mike.
This a pretty important album to have and I spin this way more than any other SD's.
I always thought SD took awhile to find their identity, I wasn't a big fan of Mommy's Little Monster and prior (so I tend to skip some over some of those songs -I know that puts me in the minority) but once they did they didn't turn back (kinda like AFI).
Ball and Chain on this album will always rank as one of the greatest country/rock songs ever written and I know that's the direction Ness wants to continue in. I just hope he keeps uptempo guitar work because it's that constant balladry, well, and a few other things, that turns me off of most country. Check it out live - preferably with a bottle of JD. Really! You'll be feeling bittersweet once the crowd starts taken the 4th verse.

5 out of 5 stars Best Band in the USA.......2005-05-25

You can forget about the debate over who the best band in America is. It begins and ends with these guys. Although not the same Social D of the 80's and 90's, in part due to aging, retirments (Johnny, we need you back on bass man!) and largely to the tragic loss of Dennis Danell, these guys simply put on the greatest show, every time. I just saw them live in Poughkeepise NY (for like the 30th time since 1992), and that show was as powerful and rocking as that first time I saw them at the Sting in New Britain, CT (and like a young dum-ass, offered Mike and Dennis a beer in the parking lot before the show).

Thank you Mr. Ness, for taking time from you family and touring. And for those of you who have never seen the band play, this album is as good as being there. "The kittens are out tonight!"

"Brian is Back!" It's taken decades, but that once sadly ironic press agent's epithet has finally come true. The intervening quarter-century may have devastated Brian Wilson's mind and body, and band and family, but, as this double-disc live recording/love-fest ably demonstrates, his soul and music burn on. Backed flawlessly by a 10-piece band (including L.A. pop revivalists the Wondermints) of fervent loyalists, Wilson and company march joyously through the Beach Boys' hits-laden catalog, from "Surfer Girl" through "Good Vibrations" to the cream of Pet Sounds, a handful of the legend's solo works, and a gratifying surprise or two (including a delicious, inside-out-ironic cover of Barenaked Ladies' laid-back "Brian Wilson" that segues hauntingly into the all-too-autobiographical "'Til I Die"). If cynics have chosen to deride Wilson's mature voice (as steady and expressive as it's been in decades) and general oddness (here revealed for what it often truly is: a playfully off-center sense of humor), they do so at the peril of ignoring his vast contributions and continuing influence--and the spark of undimmed genius that still holds so much promise. Make no mistake, this show was not about nostalgia, but rather a celebration of music whose performances sound completely in the moment. Previously available only as a Wilson Web site exclusive, this expanded edition includes an audio interview with Brian at the piano, as well as two bonus tracks--"Sloop John B" and the rousing encore sing-along "Barbara Ann"--that help further underscore a hopeful notion: Brian is really back. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars AN EXCEPTIONAL LIVE PERFORMANCE.....................2007-01-23

This cd set rocks, Brian with his Wondermints are exceptional. The Wondermints are a L.a. group of super musicians who have an interest and love for Brian Wilson and The Beach Boy sound. The Wondermints performance shows their love for Brians musical sound. Brians performance is incredible and his voice although older, sounds really nice. Brians head and performance are really into this Roxy show, I believe this due, to the smaller area this concert was performed in, not like a giant stadium or arena, were concert sound seems to get washed out. Listening to this two cd set, I was really surprised how good this concert sounded. The interview with Brian, the last track of cd two, was really nice. All the Pet Sounds instrumentals were performed as close to the Pet Sounds album as the Wondermints could possibly perform. The perfomances of the early Beach Boys music was a treat to listen to. Brian really wanted to relive his lost youth with this concert and of course pay tribute to his deceased brother Carl with the song dedication "Lay Down Burden". All and all this "Live At The Roxy" is a well worth listen, especially the import edition it has four extra songs including Brians interview. BRIAN YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Nice Live Album.......2005-12-02

Even though Brian Wilson's voice has changed a bit since the heydey of the Beach Boys in the sixties, he still delivers some nice versions of the old songs, and has an easy going manner with the audience.
I love the song "Love and Mercy", and I'm glad he included it in this concert!

4 out of 5 stars For any one who loves Beach boys Music.......2005-08-03

This is a great CD, Brian Wilson is at his best! A great concert! The people that back Brian sound as good if not
better then the Beach Boys!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant live set from a living genius........2005-03-16

Much to the surprise of everyone, Brian Wilson began touring in the late '90s, and his shows became everything the Beach Boys were not-- a celebration not of surf and cars and fun in the summer, but of genius, digging below the hits and unearthing many gems. Backed by a supportive and brilliant band, the music on these two CDs, taken from two nights at the Roxy in Los Angeles, is brilliant.

The credit largely goes to Brian's band, the core of which is the L.A. pop band the Wondermints-- a superb group of musicians, and former Beach Boys touring bandmember Jeffrey Foskett, who largely sings Brian's falsettos. Brian's vocal range has contracted a bit over the years, and the vocal arrangements are structured for him to sing all the leads. While his voice is weak and occasionally goes off key or misses notes, its still got enough of that magic to carry itself.

The set is amazing-- from the opener, bizarre 1965 single "The Little Girl I Once Knew", the energy level is high, the performance is filled with obscure gems such "This Whole World", "Kiss Me Baby", "Please Let Me Wonder" and "'Til I Die" (the latter is a powerful and moving rendition), hits ("California Girls", "I Get Around", "God Only Knows", "Good Vibrations"), a couple "Pet Sounds" instrumentals, and a pair of new songs.

Now mind you, Brian's sort of odd mannerisms, accentuated moreso during these early shows, are there, but they're easy enough to ignore, and really, the performance is top notch. This is very highly recommended for any Beach Boys fan.

4 out of 5 stars An introduction to Brian Wilson.......2004-10-22

I am not a traditional Beach Boys fan at all. I won tickets to see Paul Simon in concert. Although I am a Paul Simon fan, my wife and I were surprised when we heard that Brian Wilson was the "back up" band. I thought to myself, we should check the Brian Wilson set out. He should have been the "headliner"...as much as I like Paul Simon, the concert highlight was Brian Wilson and his band. I immediately became a fan and bought this cd release. The cd has a nice mix of songs and the band and Brian Wilson put on a good show. He even makes a little fun of his own personal past "lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did"...

I can't speak for the CD release, but this was a 1982 concert recorded for radio broadcast by NBC for the NBC Young Adults Network. I actually have a copy of the vinyl that was distributed to radio stations for play over the air, including all the Honda ads that were included as they were the main sponsor of the show. Christine and John McVie, Fleetwood and Stevie Nicks show for this concert as well. The sound is excellent. I recommend this if you are into Bob Welch.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Live Album.......2004-01-15

Like the editorial review says, Live at the Roxy comprises the live tracks from the three-quarters live Indian Summer LP. If you want the studio tracks from Indian Summer on CD, you have two choices, and they're both 24 Carrots. The U.S. Razor and Tie edition of 24 Carrots gives you three bonus tracks ("Indian Summer," "Pandora" and "Here in Angola"), while the U.K. EMI release has all five (adding "Delia's Gone and ""Princss Olivia"). Unfortunately, both versions of 24 Carrots are long out of print and can get pretty pricey.

Al Stewart recorded some truly great studio albums during the 1970s, but he was and is at his best live. And Live at the Roxy contains excellent live versions of all of Al Stewart's commercial hits plus a few others that didn't get played on the radio, but are nonetheless fine songs. The quality of the recordings is excellent and the performances are very lively and tend to surpass the original studio versions. "Running Man," "Soho (Needless to Say)," and "Roads to Moscow" are real standouts in this area.

The only flaw in this otherwise impeccable album is "Clarence Frogman Henry," which is a bit of a shaggy dog story that gives a bit of the flavor of the between-songs banter at Stewart's concerts, but unlike the songs, once you've heard it once, it ceases to be of any interest. But it's short and easy to skip, and the rest of the album is superb.

5 out of 5 stars This was the last gasp in America..........2002-01-28

Riding the wave of popularity in America following "Year of the Cat", Live at the Roxy was Al's last stand in America. His next release was three years away, but luckily, Live at the Roxy gave listeners a lot for their money. This album captures Al at the peak with Shot in the Dark and Peter White backing him. This album brings all his best to his fans along with great asides and songs lost in the glare of "Cat" fame. Here too is "Rihad" and a look at Al's great talent as a story teller par excellance!

(The orignal double album included one studio side of great songs -- these are now available as special additions to 24 K/Parrots.)

4 out of 5 stars Where's the studio stuff?.......2000-11-09

These live recordings are fantastic! However....

When "Indian Summer" (the original title) was originally released in 1981, it featured three sides of live material and a fourth side of original studio material. I understand that there's only so much that one can fit onto a compact disc. However, that first side of studio material is sorely missed.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent live album.......1999-12-03

This is a must-have for all Al fans. The quality of the recording is excellent, almost studio-like, crisp and clean, but distinct from the studio recordings.

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest and yet underated live albums recorded.......1999-06-02

Throughout the pop era Al Stewart has always been overlooked by mainstream audiences. Admittedly, his mystical sometimes bizarre lyric content is not what you typically find on radio. Yet with critical acclaim, Al Stewart has never been received enthusiastically by the mainstream. "Live at the Roxy" shows why he should be. This album was originally released as "Indian Summer Live" in 1981. It stood out at the time because of it's intimate "club atmoshere" when other artists were trying to capture the "arena energy". Al Stewart is a live musician. His work is best performed in front of an an audience versus in a studio. Live at the Roxy should be a standard for other live albums. The musicianship is impecable, including guitarist Peter White. The recording sounds as if it was recorded in the late 90s versus the early 80s. I am sure you are familiar with Year Of The Cat and Time Passages. These songs take major steps forward when performed on this album. Do not overlook the other tracks such as Running Man and On The Border. This re-release is long overdue. This is a live concert that you can lose yourself in. It creates a "you are there" feeling. Isn't that what live albums are supposed to do? Other artists desiring to record a live album should take note of AL STEWART LIVE AT THE ROXY.

Album Description

Nicolette was one of the great session singers in `70s rock, providing honeyed harmonies for Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt, the Doobie Brothers and Emmylou Harris before launching a successful career on her own. And this live concert, recorded at the famed Sunset Strip venue on December 20, 1978, and previously available as a promo-only disc, captures her fresh from the release of her debut solo album "Nicolette", which went Top 20. Indeed, ground zero of the entire SoCal `70s rock scene was at the Roxy this night. Limited edition of 5000 copies!

5 out of 5 stars Don't let this one get away!.......2007-07-17

It's expensive and there's not a whole lotta music on it, but what is there is an album quality live recording of this legendary 1970's era female vocalist at her peak of commercial popularity. If you are fan of hers you'll forget what you paid for it soon enough.

5 out of 5 stars the love you leave .......2006-10-30

I first heard this great LP when I lucked out and found the LP "Warner Bros Radio Show" at Arrons Records Shop on Melrose back in the 1980's. While I like Nicolette's other albums (now CDs) this is my favorite of all. Why? Because it has a "personal" feel to it. You get a chance to hear Nicolette sing AND speak. From songs like "clear light" and "last in love" through "baby don't do it" Nicolette is in great voice and has a fine "all-star" band behind her which includes the brillant Albert Lee on guitar. Nicolette even sings a song in French (French Waltz) that so charming it just COULD make you cry. All and all a super performance by beautiful woman and spirt who has left us way to soon. However Nicolette LIVES on through this recording, and for anyone who wants to hear her again please buy this CD and, as I always will do, go back to December 20, 1978 (the date of this live recording). You will find Nicolette there, her legacy and her heart.

5 out of 5 stars An old Magic Attic DJ with his 2 cents worth.......2006-04-17

I spent 90 nights straight working as the DJ at the Magic Attic in the summer of 85 and 86 (DJ name Chase). It was a pure pleasure working with these guys and seeing the magic they made on stage. I fondly remember the lines of people stretching a few blocks and lining up two hours early to get into the club. THAT is the power this band had on its fans.

I would play my music set from 7-830, then kill the lights, hit the fog machine and turn off the tarantula light before the guys hit the stage. They would play the first set to screaming fans and then I would come on with a 30 minute set at 10, then they brought down the house up until about midnight.

I went on to work in radio in Myrtle Beach and Nashville but seldom encountered a band with so much talent. Backstage we had a riot playing practical jokes on each other. Was that Brut after shave in the fog machine? Poor Tim hated that.

And of course, the highlight of my life was dressing up like an idiot while Tim belted out the lyrics to "Arthur Whiteside". I miss these guys and the fun we had. They provided the soundtrack for so many young people in the 80's and as we are now older, we can understand their value even more.

Tim, Rick and the rest of the guys, we miss you and are excited to be able to purchase this music and bring back the magic.

5 out of 5 stars Superb band.......2006-03-21

I am from NC and saw Sugarcreek at the Magic Attic many times. I have all their LP's and this CD is great. I got to meet the guys once when they played at our local skating rink where I worked as a DJ. If you have never heard of Sugarcreek dont hesitate to buy this CD. You will not be disappointed!!

5 out of 5 stars Been waiting for years!!!.......2005-06-13

I grew up in Myrtle Beach and Sugarcreek at the Magic Attic was the greatest!! We moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL in '84 and my Sugarcreek vinyl went with me. I introduced Sugarcreek to anyone who would listen and it instantly became the music of choice whenever my friends and I would hang out at the beach on a Saturday night. I still have my vinyl, but I have been waiting for the CD forever. I can't wait to get this one!!!!

5 out of 5 stars I knew the band.......2005-04-22

I was a big fan right from their beginning. I was lucky enough to know the original guys personally and even got in free and got to go backstage. I did a lot of photography of the band in Clemson, SC. In fact, I'd love to hear from Rick Lee if he reads this. I'm sure he remembers me. As for their music, they could imitate any of the top bands of the early 80's. They were amazing and their music would echo in your head for hours after a concert. I believe they didn't make it because they tried to improve on a perfect sound. They could have been another Journey, 38-Special if they'd kept to the theme of Live at the Roxy.

5 out of 5 stars You Can Have Jimmy Buffett....Sugarcreek IS Beach Music!!.......2004-04-07

Some of my best teen memories come from seeing Sugarcreek play live at the Magic Attic in Myrtle Beach! Fortune alone is worth the price of this 3 disk set. Soothsayer will stick in your brain and have you tapping your foot all day, and American Girls is one of the best Rock Anthems ever. But the real find of this CD collection is "Conquest for the Commoner", this is just an amazing tune and unlike anything else on the disk. A fantasy themed tune that is immediately infectious, and impossible not to crank up. The guitar work, the unforgettable chorus, the drum work...you just won't believe this was an indy production. I wore out my cassette of Fortune and have been looking for years for a CD. "Rock the Night Away", the second cd in the collection is good too, it just doesn't have the same sound as "Fortune". "Rock the Night" leans more toward a "pop" sound, at times similar to J. Geils or Night Ranger, but still very enjoyable. The third disk "Live at the Roxy" is good as far as live albums go, the production is better than you would expect from an indy release. And the real treasure is the studio track "Lovely Little Lady" which is a really fun tune that is similar to the music found on "Fortune". I know Sugarcreek appeared on Star Search but I still can't understand how these guys never got national attention? If you are a fan of 80's metal & pop you HAVE to get this disc set! Lots of fun poppy guitar driven rock that is perfect for a summer night, at the beach or other wise.

5 out of 5 stars Legends at the Roxy.......2007-08-03

After an unusual choice of start for Gladys, the tempo quickly picks up
through "Grateful",to a fantastic build up for "I don't want to do wrong" and a well compiled "Medley".As always she makes "Midnight Train" so natural and has a great ability to make songs like"I will survive",to her own unique style. On to a beautiful "Still Such a Thing",then finding energy for the classic "Heard it through the Grapevine".This would mke a great DVD,especially to give some well deserved credit to the Pips for their dance routines.

4 out of 5 stars Rockin' at the Roxy..........2000-06-08

...peak form Gladys and the boys in a high powered live performance from the 80's. I had to have it because it has one of my all time favorite songs, "Still Such a Thing" and Gladys' torch-y version of "I Will Survive". "Bourgie, Bourgie" breaks down to a gospel vamp in which Gladys seems to be enjoying herself as she spews out 'superduper, superduper bourgeoisie'...I never was all that crazy about "Landlord", but here with surprise vocalists Stevie Wonder and Dionne Warrick, I found myself at least groovin' to it. GK&TPs classics like "Midnight Train to Georgia," "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" and a superduper melody from the Motown & Buddha years are highlights of this nice CD..

5 out of 5 stars This is the one!.......1999-07-18

Having seen Gladys in concert solo, this concert proves that she could never lose her touch. With her family behind her, Gladys and the Pips pack a punch time and time again. I can't keep myself from singing along every time I listen. Guest appearances by her friends Dionne Warwick and Stevie Wonder add a nice touch to this awesome album. If you've never seen Gladys and the Pips in concert, this collection of their best performances at the Roxy will give you a front row seat to a fantastic show.

3 out of 5 stars For diehard fans.......1998-12-19

This collection of performances from a 1980 Los Angeles engagement will probably be appreciated most by the diehard Knight fan for it's inclusion of lesser known favorites like "Still Such A Thing", "Bourgie Bourgie" and "Taste of Bitter Love". The liner notes, which describe Knight's appeal with perception (and include rare photos), claim these selections were culled from five nights of performances. However, the fatigue in Kinght's voice, which the discerning fan will hear, makes one wonder if this were perhaps the last show on the last night. The concert isn't Gladys Knight & The Pips at their live best, but it has its moments. Listen for audience members Stevie Wonder and Dionne Warwick to join Gladys briefly on "Landlord". The somewhat obscure disco-era "You Bring Out The Best In Me" may be a plus for some listeners.
