Call it an aggregation of some of the best contemporary percussionists: Trilok Gurtu, Zakir Hussain, and Asian Underground star Talvin Singh combine under the sonic washes of producer Bill Laswell to show the possibilities of Indian percussion. It's definitely a beatfest, but one of subtlety, where what is being said isn't as important as the way it's being stated, and the dialogue between hands includes a lot of silences. Gurtu comes from a more jazz tradition, Hussein a classical background, and Singh represents the brash young things of the dance floor. Mostly Laswell leaves it to them to provide the sonic entertainment, which is as it should be with delicate swathes of sound barely intruding, just coloring the proceedings. While it's not for everyone, those who love Indian percussion in all its forms will find this album a complete joy. --Chris Nickson

It's interesting how the negative reviewer below can speak of "delving" into so many styles of music, yet evidently came into this album with a pre-conceived notion of what it should be. This album makes no claim or attempt to be "classical" Indian music, except for maybe the last track. This album IS a fresh collaboration among some of the world's most talented performers (Indian and otherwise) that had my jaw firmly planted on the ground from the moment I hit "play". Hearing traditional Indian instrumentation combined with western production proved to me that nirvana or a great album of any style can only be obtained with an open mind. Absolutely amazing. 10 stars...

5 out of 5 stars Still one of my favorites..........2006-05-07

I'd been a fan of Bill Laswell and Talvin Singh before, but this album introduced me to Tabla and the skill of Zakir Hussain. Years later, I own more classical tabla albums from Hussain and others, but I still come back to this one. I love it so much I started playing tabla this year.

Favorite tracks: "Palmistry" and "Alla."

1 out of 5 stars ?!.......2004-09-29

I really don't want to be mean, but I find this album very shallow. Classical Indian music is a very complex, subtle and beautiful thing. Comibining it in this way may help to get these wonderful tabla players to a wider audience, but the true energy has been tainted and lowered to make it palatable to simple-minded people who need westernized electronic and wishy-washy "world music" cliches. I don't find this music to be uplifting or enlightening or interesting. And this is not coming from a strict old fundamentalist of anything, I have delved deep into the avante guard, minimalism, "new music", eastern and western music theory, microtonal, etc. I would recomend jsut being a non-westernized album and getting the full benefit of tabla playing. However if your mainstay is jungle/drum&bass, then this would be a step up for you, so go for it, it is worth the pruchase in that case.

5 out of 5 stars oh,that Billy-boy!.......2004-07-15

mr laswell has done many things, but this was quite a suprise!it consists of both chilled and upbeat tala(a middle eastern hand drum)drumming mixed with laz's trademark electronica that gradually fades in and out of the songs.it's a real trip-an-a-half for anyone not ignorant enough to dismiss it as "boring".

5 out of 5 stars Jump-up Brazillian.......2004-08-29

This is a great jazzy jump-up drum'n'bass album. It's a good one for people to listen to if they are new to dnb and a CD that you can sit down and listen to straight thru. Stand out track is Só Tinha Que Ser Com Você which is a beatiful remix of a Fernando Porto track.

5 out of 5 stars Drum n' bass is not dead yet.......2004-07-30

There's not much to say that the other reviewers have not said in praising the greatness of this 2001 mix. I find that whenever I play this mix to friends they seemed almost stunned, not having heard a dnb mix of such high quality. For those interested in the search for other albums along these lines check out NU PERSPECTIVES from the Partisan Label in 1998 if you can find it, COOL STEPS from fellow brasillian DJ Patife, DJ SUV's 2003 drum n bass mix on DMC and his solo project on the Full Cycle label, called DESERT ROSE.

5 out of 5 stars Drum 'n' Bass takes a step closer to widespread acceptance.........2003-10-28

Possibly realising that D'n'B has the potential to reach a far more wider ranging audience, `DJ Marky' mixes a set that focuses squarely on the less abrasive side of D'n'B, and thus makes such a definingly brilliant set, that it's undoubtedly going to be copied over the coming years.....moving fluidly through downtempo vocal breakbeat "Un-Cut's - Midnight", "Krust's - Jazz Note", before the introduction of the utterly sublime Brazilian themed D'n'B tracks are introduced "Fernanda Porto's - Sambassim", and the wonderfully breezy DJ Marky produced "Só Tinha Que Ser Com Você", before rounding out things perfectly with "Shy Fx & T-Power's - Shake Ur Body" (Listed here as "Shake It"). You'll be hard pressed to find a more accessible D'n'B mix album that'll delight newcomers & Enthusiasts alike, and one of a growing list of D'n'B albums that has a chance of making a mainstream impact. and is unquestionably is a landmark D'n'B album of staggering brilliance...

5 out of 5 stars one simple word to explain this mix.....WOW.......2003-06-29

this album is so amazing, everything about it from start to finish is perfect, the tune selection develops through out the mix, it really takes your through a journey, the tune selection is amazing, so many classics from 2000-2001, and many great brazilain flavas here also. Also the mixing on this albums is nice and tight and Marky leaves in the tunes the perfect length only to get you asking for more! the scratchin on this cd in not technically amazing but its sounds so well preformed when he scratchs over "the hook" or the tunes. its truly shows that in 2001 when drum and bass came back into full effect, how diverse the sound became with dark bizness, disco style, liquid funk, latin beats, techstep and dancefloor music. and it also shows why DJ Marky is a amazing DJ

its so wonderful!!! go buy this album now! you wont be disappointed at all

4 out of 5 stars Very Tasty Latin infused mix.......2003-04-22

A very accesible Drum and Bass cd. Nice tracks mixed well. This is not the bone crunching dark sound that DnB can sometimes be, but neither is it the light & airy LTJ Bukem sound.

It will work just as well on the dancefloor as it will in your headphones.

Being the nitpicker that I am, I gave it 4 stars not 5. I took off half a star as in some places it tends to jump styles (ie lacks a flow through the mix) and another half a star off becuase some of the tracks lean too much on the commercial tip.

Having said that, a very good cd to get. Most drum and bass heads will like it. It will also serve very well as an intro to DnB for those who don't "get it" yet.

This compilation, offered by LA's Urb Magazine, is only deceptively straightforward: it explores the current state of electronica, with dance-floor stalwarts DJ Icey, Uberzone, and Rabbit in the Moon butting heads with neo-pop stars like the Crystal Method, Goldie, and Portishead. One might suspect this to be yet another cash-in "electronica" compilation, a mere licensing scheme intended to separate you from the contents of your wallet. But this ain't no scam: not only is the track selection topnotch and accessible, with an equal dose of well-known hits and underappreciated gems, but the compilation also offers an entertaining education. On disc two, New York's Liquid Todd throws down a set of classics, tracks like Rhythim Is Rhythim's "Strings of Life," Orbital's "Chime," and Dubtribe's "Mother Earth," giving an insight as to what today's electronica stars were hearing whilst in their nappies. As an introduction to the overhyped and confusing world of "electronica," this compilation can't be beat. --Matthew Corwine

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good "past and present" collection........2003-09-08

No collection will ever be perfect, but this does a decent job. The first disc is what's supposed to be hot (in 98). The second is supposed to be some old school classics. Some well known artists are on here like "Prodigy", "Moby", and "Portishead". My favorite thing by far is some of who's sampled on different tracks. Samples from "Bad Brains", "Kate Bush", "The Verve", and the theme from "Twin Peaks". Overall a good comp. The 1st "Urbal Beats" is good too. Pretty much electronica's greatest hits.

4 out of 5 stars This is a pointless review.. for a pointless album.......2001-07-28

First thing about this album that i must mention right off is that the track slection is horrid. If it wasn't trying to be a "definitive guide to electronic music" it probably wouldn't have been so annoying. Really this "urbal beats" series works well if view together, but the track selection seems wrong in the individual sets. This time around the balance is thrown off by adding too much big beats, jungle, and trip hop. Three styles that do come from the same influences. Giving the whole album a lack of diversity. Digital empire 2 does diversity so much better. Another issue is the repetition of the same groups and groups that are seen together all the time.. I mean we have an original prodigy song, a remix of a prodigy song and a song prodigy remixed? is this the "definitve guide to prodigy?" We have a fatboy slim song, and a fat boy slim remix. And the whole first disk breaks down to basically 3 different types of related electronica. giving a very bad "definition" of electronica.

The second disk is a half way decent attempt at mixing alot of classic together, but I am getting somewhat sick of hearing old school electronica thats just doesn't hodl up well over time.

I give the album 4 stars since it does have some decent gems on it. But I highy recomend "digital empire 2" over this compilation if your looking to get schooled on the so called "electronica genre"

    3 out of 5 stars A letdown.......2000-06-23

This CD was a big letdown.. it was recommended by the person at the record store, looked good, etc. Basically disc 1 was too jungle for me. There are some tunes that are pretty good, but there are some downright angry-feeling ones as well. Temper-temper gave me a headache and "release YO' Delf"--well, you can figure it.

Disc 2 was much better, but still not enough to compell me to repeat the purchase.

    Summary: Disc1 1-2 stars, Disc2 3-4 stars

    4 out of 5 stars Disc 2 much better.......2000-06-19

There's another review that sums my sentiments exactly. Disc 1 gets 2-3 stars (kind of like a rap with faster beat) But disc 2 is really good; 5 stars)

4 out of 5 stars Start With The First Volume.......2000-06-01

This set is more uneven than the first Urbal Beats, but it still contains more than a few classics of the genre. The two discs contain a lot of music for a good price--I recommend it as a next step if you like the first volume.

    5 out of 5 stars A decade of AMP.......2007-05-14

First off, let me just say that MTV suxorz. However, they can't be 100% awful, because they brought us AMP (also, remember the classic Yo! MTV Raps and Headbanger's Ball? ;). And while the show no longer exists on the station, the CD lives on.

"Block Rockin' Beats" definitely starts the disc off on the right foot, with some hard and heavy breakbeats as only the Chemical Brothers can make them. "Atom Bomb" put Fluke on the map, and rightfully so. Underworld was at the top of the techno game throughout the late 90s, and "Pearl's Girl" is literally flawless in production. "We Have Explosive" = KILLER. "Ni Ten Ichi Ryu" is a minimal, offstep drum & bass track, with a nice, almost oriental feel (hence the Japanese title, I suppose). "Girl/Boy Song" is far from Aphex Twin's best track, but its cool instrumental melody and scattered beats do well here as a contrast track, and you can almost understand what Aphex is about. Almost. Likewise, "The Box" is certainly not Orbital's best track, but it really gives a good feel for the group and the genre. Tranquility Bass drops a dark, deep, trip-hoppy track. "Inner city Life" is a drum & bass classic, and one of the main reasons I still listen to techno. The "Voodoo People" remix is the best version of another classic techno track. "Are You There" can get repetitive, but it builds and builds with acid breaks over a nifty answering machine sample. "Busy Child" brought the Crystal Method instant credibility, and staying power. And of course, what better way to finish it off than with some harsh, angsty Digital Hardcore from the master of that trade, Alec Empire and Atari Teenage Riot.

When I was 18 and still discovering techno music, this CD helped me to understand the different styles and popular artists, and opened the door for me to forge my own ideas about what was worth listening to. Incidentally, within a year of my buying this CD, I owned every full-length CD with the songs on this album. Absolutely worth it.

    3 out of 5 stars Ok.......2005-08-06

This album is not that great. It has some interesting music on it, and one or two songs I play on occasion, but it is pretty mediocre. Look elsewhere for kick ass beats or journeys through sound.

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST electronic compilations.......2002-12-26

First that all, Im an electronic music fan from Colombia. I remember that my first SERIOUS contact with electronic music was the AMP TV show, via cable television, way back to 1996. In south america, just like in the U.S. the fresh new sound of the AMP TV show captivated a lot of people like me. And just like in the U.S., here in Colombia, finding good quality electronic music was a lot harder than now...

So when this CD came out, I ordered it in a music store that worked with imports, and WOW... even now after six years, few discs on my collection have the ammount of quality that this one has. It has the biggest artists in electronic music, as well as some of their most famous tracks. Of course, this cd may not appeal to the "bang-bang-boom-boom" techno-fans, because every track on this album is pure flowing style. Real quality. Buy it NOW.

5 out of 5 stars the original gangsta.......2002-12-11

This CD's a great starting point and nothing more. it was best back in 97 in my friend's car when we first heard aphex twin and atari teenage riot and laughed it off, only to end up putting it back on later. before circuit city came along and labeled it "electronica" and god knows what else, this was the best starting point for american listeners to get into british techno. only a few stinkers out of an otherwise very diverse (drum 'n bass, chaos, cyberPUNKROCK, straight up big beat) and catchy bunch, sure to sell any disbeliever after time.

    4 out of 5 stars Experimental MTV?YES!.......2002-05-14

Can you believe I have owned this CD since 1997? I stumbled across AMP one Sunday night after watching 120 Minutes. On AMP, I was exposed to for the first time Prodigy, the Chemical Brothers, Future Sound of London and many other cutting edge artists. From that moment on, I knew I had to have the CD! I agree with the other reviewers here, it is a taste of what MTV in the US can be if they chose to get back their experimental and groundbreaking roots. With songs from the likes of Goldie, the Chemical Brothers, Underworld and the now infamous Prodigy...this CD gives you an overview of the first AMP shows. I can tell you, all of these groups are still very much popular here in Europe and are not "One Hit Wonders" by any means. If you want a taste of experiemental MTV before the Nu-Metal and Boy Band take over of 1998, respectively, then pick up this CD, you wont regret it.

    Album Description

2006 expanded reissue of this album by 4Hero (AKA Mark Mac and Dego), originally released in 2001. Features bonus tracks. Never ones to let the grass grow under their feet, the original UK drum and bass pioneers 4Hero's adventures in sound have thrown up some of the most original and enthralling dancefloor excursions of the past few years. The tradition continues with Creating Patterns, as the pair explore Latin rhythms, Eastern and African sounds whilst intertwining both electronic and live acoustics with the vocal talents of some amazing guest artists. 'Time' features the earthly tones and lyrics of Ursula Rucker, Jill Scott is taken into 4hero's world of futuristic soul, jazz and drum and bass on 'Another Day' and the unmistakeable soul-folk tones of Terry Callier on 'The Day of the Greys'. Undoubtedly a future award nominee, 'Creating Patterns' shapes up like an international winner. Mercury.

    5 out of 5 stars 4-Hero's Superb Soul/Broken-Beat/Nu-Jazz Album gets Reissued.......2007-01-22

Following up the universally impressive & ambitious Breakbeat / Electronica "Two Pages" that was released in 1998 and became something of a underground classic, was never going to be easy proposition. And for the 2001 follow-up, rather than retread the breakbeat patterns of the last album, in a climate where musical genres has shifted focus, they have instead (in theory) built an album of Nu-Jazz / Broken Beat experiments, with a impressive collection of vocalists to bring these tracks to life.

For those worried that this emphasis on vocalists meant, that there wasn't going to be the sublime instrumentals that 4-Hero do so well, need not worry. because tracks such as the skittering and gracefully freewheeling efforts such as "Conceptions", "Something Nothing" & " "Eight" retain that reliably earthy & elaborate organic sound that 4-Hero are applauded for. But it must be said that as excellent as these tracks are, the vocal collaborations are the highlights here....

"Time", featuring "Ursula Rucker" plays to the strengths of what she does best, and that's to put spoken word & socially aware wordplay to the backing of minimal jazz arrangements. Uncompromising, intense and Cerebral. It's heady music for sure, and is as intense as hell. But props to 4-hero, for not being tempted into making track resembling aural wallpaper, with inane diagloue planted over the top.

"Another Day" sees the music move subtly from the more moodily constructed beats of "Time" into something more elegant & smooth Nu-Soul referencing. The on-board vocalist for this remarkable effort is "Jill Scott", and only her truly remarkable vocal (and it is remarkable) could make a song with the mundane subject matter of being 'too tired to get up and go to work' sound as soaring and passionate as a classic old-skool soul....in a word Marvellous.

The Broken beat sound get's an introduction here, in the form of "Hold it Down", and it's one of the most upbeat tracks on offer here, and with some excellent drum programming and percussive breakbeat experiments with a clear nod to Jazz-fusion with its sampled soul chorus, which makes up the backbone of the vocal here. Its similar in style, to some of the more recognised artists in the broken Beat genre ("New Sector Movements (NSM)", "Two Banks of Four"), and actually remains one of my favourite tracks on this album, due to its groove and immediacy.

Taking a cue from the beat Poetry of 'Gil Scott-heron', with one eye on the uncomprimising, engaging songwriting skills that depict the gradually declining social environment, self-Conscious, incisive, confrontational lyrics, mixed with stirring, rousing contemporary production heavily influenced by Jazz. This (like 'Ursula Rucker's' effort), brings some heavyweight substance to the tracklisting, in amongst all the beautifully string arrangements & instrumentals that comprise this album. It manages to just pip Ursula's effort, due to being slightly more direct and articulate, and the more immediately thought-provoking of the two (although musically, Ursula has the edge), irrespective of that, this is stirring stuff.

For the last half of the album, where usually, in these sorts of albums, it tends to lag. 4-Hero have wisely tightened their belts and put some strong tracks for the last half. Apart from a couple of gorgeous lengthy instrumentals in the form of "Eight" & "2-BS-74638", but the reworking of "Minnie Riperton's - Les Fleur" is easily one of the best singles that 4-Hero have ever created, all heavy sensual string arrangements, thrilling instruments performances, welded together with euphoric soaring vocal choruses with a nod to classic Rythm & Soul, it's a heart-jerking moment for sure, and is definitely one the undisputed hightlights of the album.

But, The tricky question is.....'Should you buy it??'

Well....if you're a 4-hero fan, and have at least 2 of their albums, then this is a must, as it's the band shifting direction yet again (bear in mind, they started as a 'Jungle/Drum n Bass' act in the early 90's, then moved into the more melodic/ jazz-fusion end of breakbeat in the late 90's), now find themselves, positioned to embrace the more lucrative 'Nu-Jazz' / 'Broken Beat' / Jazz-House genre that an artist like "Jazzanova" inhibit. So those hoping for some of the more Drum/beat orientated tracks from the "Two Pages" album may well be disappointed (or even worse, dismiss this album). And whilst I'm using "Two Pages" as a reference, This album may lack the diversity of "Two Pages", with fewer immediately obvious standout tracks, such as "Star Chasers", "Spirits in Transit" & "We Who Are Not as Others" & "In the Shadows", to match the sprawling masterpiece that is "Two Pages". But "Creating patterns" is more tightly focused and less indulgent than the previous album, with each track featured here, standing admirably in its own right, and with some tracks natural progressions from the last album, and less Dense & concentrated a listening experience. Is it better than "Two Pages"........well, its a very close call. And I'd have to say that "Two pages" nudges ahead of "Creating Patterns" for being a (ever so slightly) more memorable album. And so I suggest if your new to 4-Hero, start with that first, and then make this tremendous album your next purchase.

If the mark of true musical genius is a potent combination of timelessness and universality, then the late Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla stands near the summit with other, more celebrated, masters. Before his death in 1992, the classically-trained, jazz-influenced Piazzolla was known for revolutionizing tango, reinventing a largely provincial dance music and spreading it at concert halls worldwide. Little wonder that since his death a wide variety of jazz and classical performers (Yo-Yo Ma, Gidon Kramer, Emmanuel Ax, and Al DiMeola) have recorded albums devoted to Piazzolla's music. Perhaps more surprising, but fitting in its own way, is the recent embrace of nuevo tango by a global army of dance-club deejays, many of whom appear on Astor Piazzolla Remixed. After all, tango was originally born as a dance between two men in the bordellos of Buenos Aires, and the deejays on Remixed--hailing from New York, London, Paris, Stockholm, and Helsinki--are simply reclaiming the music's past while simultaneously propelling it into the future. Thankfully, all fifteen interpreters are respectful without lapsing into the reverential; they cut and paste the primary elements of Piazzolla's music -bandoneon, violin, piano, contrabass, and guitar—into new sonic shapes, adding dance beats and a polyglot range of vocals that often meld together seamlessly. Particularly good are the soul-infused take on "Milonga" by New York deejay and ordained African priest Osunlade; the Detroit techno-Latin hybrid of "Revirado" by John Beltran; and the symphonic scat jazz of "Verano Porteno" by Nuspirit Helsinki. Not all the tracks will win instant acceptance from long-time Piazzolla fans: London drum 'n' bass duo 4Hero turn "El Viaje" into four-on-the-floor disco that edges closer to Donna Summer than anything the late composer might recognize. But then, such complaints probably sound similar to the opposition Piazzolla faced when he first pulled traditional tango apart and refashioned it to his own liking in the mid-'50s. All told, Astor Piazzolla Remixed is a worthy tribute to a great composer. --Keith Moerer

5 out of 5 stars nothing to do with Piazzolla's tango, but..........2006-12-07

I know it has nothing to do with Piazzolla's tango, but since its melodies remain there, it's nice to listen. I mean, instead of listening to some poor composed pseudo electronic tango, let's listen to remixes of real "El Troesma" compositions...

3 out of 5 stars A disappointment for Piazzolla lovers and tangueros.......2006-01-15

Other than Carlos Gardel, Astor Piazzolla is probably one of the best known tango writers and musicians. I purchased this CD because some selections were contained in Aubade's "Lecons de Tango." I liked Aubade's "Lecons de Tango," but I do not like this CD much.

This is not tango music, it is more along the lines of electronica / club music that is inspired by Piazzolla. It has what I consider to be almost a totally European flavor. I do not mean to disparage European music. I lived in Europe for 17 months and had a lot of fun dancing, but the music was not tango or neo-tango. This CD lacks the strong tango dance rhythms. But if you like European-style club music, you may like this CD.

To my mind, the best selections on this disk are Hi Perspective's "El Tango", Alexkid's "Luna," Koop's "Vuelvo al Sur." Those pieces are not, in and of themselves, good reasons for buying this CD. From now on, I will rely on recommendations from Sharna Fabiano's Neo-tango DJ list or Jackie Wong's Neo-tango zone.

3 out of 5 stars should be entitled "astor piazzolla INSPIRED/milked ".......2005-12-13

BIG F*NG NOTE PEOPLE~~ this is just an astor piazzolla INFLUENCED acid jazz album; not an astor piazzolla REMIXED album. the only songs I like are #2(...bossa nova sounding and repetitive) & 4(... not really tango; more dub/strings/trip hop). A remix album should have at least 50% original material with accents...this just contains 6 second loops of original Piazzolla material used as a sort of "spine" to build up the rest of the meager songs. Track 8 is so lame all the guy says is "said I wanna be dancin witcha baby"...freakin' annoying! But I guess if your into elevator music this is a good album.

4 out of 5 stars Argentine Tango Master Remixed........2005-10-27

I love the music of Astor Piazzolla in it's original form and when I first heard of the Gotan Project I was first to jump at getting there CD Revancha Del Tango and listening to their excellent album as they had incorporated alot of elements of tango music and even Astor Piazzolla's music into their own release. It was only right for a remixed set of Astor Piazzolla's music to get released and what an awesome release it is. It's got some great remixes! The track Vuelvo Al Sur remixed by Koop is amazing and sounds so relaxing and beautiful. Another great remix on here is Prelude Fugue VMM by Zeb. It's sexy with lot's of accordion samples and a downbeat groove to turn out to be perfection! El Viaje is another perfect remix by 4 Hero. It kick starts with the beats and then becomes this moody downbeat track like it's the soundtrack to a film. Just plain terrific! Other great tracks included here are Luna (Full Moon Remix) by Alexxkid, Verano Porteno by Nuspirit Helsinki and Tanguedia by Nickodemus and Osiris. Overall an excellent release worth owning if you are at all into world beat, chill out/downtempo, electronica and or remixes.

Everyone and his cousin has done, or been the subject of, a remix record at this point, so it takes something special for one to stand out from the crowd. Old School Vs. New School qualifies--emphatically. A celebration of some of the Jive and Silvertone labels' best singles, it pits killer tracks from A Tribe Called Quest, Kool Moe Dee, Boogie Down Productions, Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, Whodini, and the Stone Roses against the talents of Norman Cook (a.k.a. Fatboy Slim), Doc Martin, Rabbit in the Moon, Aphrodite, and other well-known--and talented--remixers. With the exception of Hollis Monroe's take on R. Kelly's "Sex Me"--easily the weakest track on the album, both in its original and remixed form--all of the songs are somehow treated with respect and given a fresh life. Cook's take on A Tribe Called Quest's "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo" gives the track a tropical feel, the Bassbin Twins give their take on BDP's catalog in a tribute medley, and the two takes of the Stone Roses' classic "Fools Gold"--from Grooverider and Rabbit in the Moon--bring out two different sides of a deserving song. You'll want to dig out the originals again and listen to them side by side with the remixes. --Randy Silver

After hearing a few tracks from the second volume I thought the first one would be even better... Yet I was extremely dissappointed when I heard the album... If you like old 80's hip-hop with boring, weak techno beats then this is the album you have been waiting for...

    4 out of 5 stars A Great Remix Compilation.......2000-03-19

I was looking for a breakbeat compilation and found this. A few tracks have some sweet breakbeats, but there's so much more funk that can't be contained by just one musical subgenre. These new school remixes have taken these already great tracks and transformed them. There are a couple tracks on the CD that don't quite slide with me, but the majority are awesome. Whodini vs The Freestylers, A Tribe Called Quest vs Aphrodite, and A Tribe Called Quest vs Norman Cook especially are otherwordly and deserve to be cranked up on everyone's stereo system.

5 out of 5 stars Studder scratch, studder scratch filling up the beats.......1999-05-13

Yummy scratch tracks laying down fat fast pistol oomph. If you funk the vibe, ya know that the skunk is tribe. A burning blend of aboriginal harmonies in accordance with section 12 of the Funk Nation Treaty. Fat Boy Slim brings pounds of carpet to the already cantonese tribe tune.

    5 out of 5 stars Impressive mixes.......1999-04-24

Even though I'm getting sick of techno compilations, this one didn't disapoint. The remixes are fresh and original. All the Tribe remixes are incredible, especially the Aphrodite and Fat Boy Slim mixes. A great mix of house, break beat and trance versions of some classic music. But R Kelly? Why?

5 out of 5 stars THIS CD IS DOPE!!!! BUY IT!!!!.......1999-03-17

5 out of 5 stars Great game, even better soundtrack!.......2007-01-03

I will admit, after purchasing this game, I found myself sitting in front of my Playstation hearing 3,2,1, GO! and then placing the controller on the ground in front of me listening to the great music coming from my 13" TV. After a while, the game simply became a visual to a near perfect soundtrack. If you enjoy heart racing, adrenaline pumping electronica then this is the soundtrack for you. Highly recommended however Coffee + This Album may = excessive speed on the road. Buy at your own risk :)

5 out of 5 stars Required listening for EDM fans.......2005-05-12

If you are into electronic dance music this CD not just a good album, but required listening. Actually it's great if you are just starting into the genre and want to hear the music that catapulted it. Based on a video game soundtrack Wipeout XL takes what the Playstation game (Wipeout 2) did with the music genre and moved it another level. The Wipeout 2 games was heralded as not only an excellent arcade racing game, but a game that had one of the coolest soundtracks ever. This is because the game designers decided to get a broad range of artists together on their game project. The result was a video game with a soundtrack that defined electronic music in the 90's.

What Wipeout XL did was take that style of music and put it on a CD so people can just pop it in and jam without having to either rip the tracks off the game or play the game cd on a stereo system. There are track differences between the two. For one the games staff writer, Cold Fusion, doesn't have any tracks on it so that takes out two songs. From there a couple other songs were replaced for whatever reasons (personally I think Future Sound of London's Herd Killing is just too dissonant for anything but a title scroll for the game). But don't fret, because what they replaced them with is definitely worth your while.

Some of the new tracks on this CD are exclusive to this CD only. That's right. Exclusive mixes. I don't mean crappy freak mixes that don't deserve proliferation I mean some killer mixes that you MUST have in your collection. Here's my opinion on some tracks:

ATOM BOMB and V-SIX by Fluke is not the regular version. It's one of those exclusive versions I was talking about. And this is the coolest mix of Atom Bomb I have ever heard (and I heard lots). Totally new beat and feel, but definitely the same song. V-Six is an exlusive song you won't find anywhere but here. Not even remixes. It's aggressive and driven like a lot of his dancier tracks. The CD is worth getting for these two tracks alone.

LOOPS OF FURY and LEAVE HOME (Underworld Mix) By Chemical Brothers, while not exclusive mixes, they are songs you won't find on any of their albums. They were released on singles only. Either way Loops of Fury to me is the ultimate big beat song. Powerful drums on top of a driving bassline with a mess of fun noises dancing around the groove. Leave Home is just powerful, but more minimalist. Still great on the dance floor. This CD is worth it for these two tracks alone (Did I just repeat myself? See where I'm getting at?).

2097 by Source Direct can only be found on the Wipeout CD's (game and XL CD). At least it's not on any of their albums. It's some crazy drum and bass that you might not be able to dance to, but it sure is interesting listening to what do they the instruments.

Other good tracks (not exclusive) are Orbital's P.E.T.R.O.L., Future Sound of London's WE HAVE EXPLOSIVE (very popular), and the lyricless FIRESTARTER by The Prodigy. TIN THERE and MUSIQUE are a little repetitive but manageable. Photek is very much like Source Direct, only not as interesting in their drum-&-bassiness.

If you are just getting into modern electronic music then this would be a perfect primer for you. If you have been into it for a while there are some tracks here worth getting that are either not that easy to find or you just won't find elsewhere. Either way this is an excellent CD that's worthy to be in your collection.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as the original.......2003-11-07

Basicaly the only decent stuff I see here are tracks 1,4,7 and 8. Seven is the coolest theme ever - the one from the WipeoutXL game intro video(the whole reason I got this CD) and the first track is also mixed in there somewhere. Number 4 is just a more or less decent techno track, while 8 is Prodigy's "Firestarter" without the vocals. Track 2 was a dissapointing dulled-down version of Fluke's "Atom Bomb"(I'd give the CD 4 stars if they just put the excellent original one). So there you have it, unless you desperatly want the WipeoutXL intro flick music which wasn't included on the game CD - don't bother. Better get the WipeoutXL game itself - it's out for PSX and PC and has the great game and music all in one(skip the first data track). You can also play the PSX version with an emulator and get the same resolution. But the PC version is the best.

    5 out of 5 stars State-of-the-art electronica.......2003-06-10

To call this a "techno" CD is misleading. Sure there's some of that, but this is really a genuine electronica CD with the likes of Photek, Source Direct, et al making an appearance with some, shall we say, unique tracks.

Electronica today (2003) isn't quite what it used to be back when it was new and clearly still experimental and at the top of its form. This 78:18 CD offers up some classic tracks that will last forever. I have a lot of CDs from various electronica artists that have songs on this compilation (Fluke, FSOL, Orbital, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy) and others that don't (namely Crystal Method) and they're all great but none quite capture the diverse essence of what electronica can encompass. This is that CD!

The version of Atom Bomb on here is a cleaned-up AND remixed version of the original on Fluke's own Risotto CD. None of the other reviews really pointed that out.

4 out of 5 stars Ha ha ha ha... WIPEOUT!.......2002-07-25

When I bought this however many years ago, nobody bothered to point out to me that it was the soundtrack to a game. But perhaps that's the greatest compliment anybody could give it--that the music stands on its own without any hard-sell.

Maybe you bought 'Exit Planet Dust' but if you missed out on the Chemical Brothers' (in my opinion) best single "Loops of Fury", you could atone buy picking up this disc. The instrumental version of "Firestarter" is better than the original, and "PETROL" is not representative of the Orbital album ('In Sides') it comes from, but still kicks.

The whole 'Electronica' wave was over-done and rightfully put in its proper place on the musical scheme of things, but in retrospect, there were some singles you had to own, and this is a superb compilation of them.

Made to be booming out of your convertible, even if it's a k-car.

    2 out of 5 stars Use Dependant.......2007-06-19

I bought this CD to be background music for a 007 party. While the majority of the pieces are adequate, being banal drivel can fade into the background, some are truly frightening. In particular, there is A View To A Kill Part 2, which must use clips from the raw format vocals. Remember the awards performance where Simon Le Bon was either too drunk or too drugged out to carry a tune? This is the same screeching, cracking, off-tune, hysterical (as in "hysterics," not as in "funny") vocal. Interestingly, Part 2 comes before Part 1 on the CD, and part 1 is better. It has been commented before that these are not particularly famous D&B artists, and this certainly is what I would imagine second-rate performers to sound like. I would probably be better off buying a movie soundtrack.

2 out of 5 stars A good idea, but poorly executed.......2006-03-04

I'm a fan of James Bond and electronic music, so I thought I'd really enjoy this CD. I was sorely mistaken. "Bond Beat & Bass" is a compilation of very poor remixes of music from the earlier Bond movies (taken mostly from the Connery and Moore films). A couple of the tracks on this CD are okay (I liked "Goldfinger Part 2"), but that's about it. I was extremely disappointed. The James Bond films boast such incredible music and all of the original songs could lend themselves very well to new electronic mixes, but none of the artists on this album managed to get it right. What a shame.

5 out of 5 stars BEST BOND MIXES ON CD.......2003-11-12

THIS CD IS AN ABSOLUTE MIND TRIP, IF YOUR INTO BOND AND ELECTRONIC MUSIC U WILL LOVE THIS CD. SURE ALL THE REMIXES ARENT THAT GREAT N U WISH THE COMPLINATION REMIXED ALL THE JAMES BOND SONGS BUT I WAS EXTREMLY HAPPY WHEN I PURCHASED THIS CD. AND IF YOUR LOOKING FOR OTHER REMIXES THEY R OUT THERE, ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE (PORTISHEAD MIX ) AMAZING MIX...CANT WAIT FOR A NEW BOND TO COME OUT THEY KEEP MAKIN EM BETTER N BETTER...NOT AS GOOD AS THE CLASSICS BUT HEY AT LEAST THEY R BETTER THEN THE GOLDENEYE AND TOMORROW NEVER DIES WHICH WERE AMERICANIZED VERSIONS OF JAMES BOND AND THAT DIDNT WORK FOR ME.

1 out of 5 stars A Slap in the Face of All True Bond Fans.......2003-05-07

If anyone wants to hear a real Bond remix, don't buy this. I've heard original Bond tunes (take in mind that the ones I'm talking about are more than 30 years old) that could blow these ...away.
Have you ever heard of ANY of the artists on this disc?
    I thought not.

    3 out of 5 stars IN A WORLD..........2000-07-17

In a world where there is no law, only the rules of logic remain. This compilation of spiced up Bond tunes comes off more like the "Spice Girls." Techno pop never sounded so annoying. Look for the real thang baby. Elevator music for the whole family.
