Very soulful performance.......2007-03-30

Ravi Shankar and Nikhil Banerjee are generally considered to be the greatest sitarists in history. Based on the CDs I've heard, Shahid Parvez is not quite in their league but he's pretty amazing. Anuradha Pal, one of the few women I've ever heard on the tabla, and who joins him here is no slouch either. The recording on this disk, culled from two live performances from May 2000 in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia, are simply breathtaking. At times Parvez plays with such dazzling speed but does so in a way that he never sounds like he's sacrificing soulfulness for technical virtuosity. On the slower first piece, his playing is very moving, evoking a deep melancholy that, for me, only Indian classical music can stir. The sound is far from audiophile quality, but it's a live recording, so some allowances can be made, especially considering the beauty of the music.

The CD I have which looks identical to the one shown here also has an unlisted 16 minute fourth track, which appears as "Untitled" when played in iTunes. I'm assuming it's also on this disk.

If you're new to Indian classical music, this is a pretty good place to start. If you already know and love the music, you'll definitely want this disk in your collection.

Also worth picking up, if you can find it, is a recording Parvez made with Partha Sarathi Mukherjee (on tabla) called "Midnight Moon."

Phenomenal Duet!.......2004-10-10

This CD features 2 of the foremost masters of their art, Ustad Ali Ahmad Hussain Khan (shenai) and Pandit Manilal Nag (sitar). They perform live a full length exposition of rag Desh, a romantic raga associated with the rainy season. Quite simply, the music is absolutely phenomenal. Each one of them alone could perform rag Desh spectacularly. However, the two playing together seem to somehow elevate each other's music to dizzying heights. The listener is left in amazement. This is music at its best.

Album Description

This album follows more of the North Indian classical tradition than the familiar East/West fusion forms. The compositions are based upon traditional ragas, and are made unique by the interaction between the sitar and the guitar - a mixture that is not commonly experimented with in India. The acoustic textures of each instrument complement one another well.

David has studied music with Ashwin, and they have performed together regularly. Over the years, he has done well in understanding and complementing Ashwin's musical style. It is this relationship that makes their “call and response” improvisations spontaneous.

Since this album's first release, on cassette, in 1981, Ashwin has gone on to release two more fusion albums-Sitar Power I and Sitar Power II, with David accompanying him on the guitar.

This release on CD is brand new and the tracks have been especially enhanced from the original analog reel master to the present Compact Disc format.
