Album Description

"Coconut Culture" is the newest CD from Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist Allan Thomas. The artist says the music on this record might be best described as R&B or "Rhythm and Beach"! Created from mixing contemporary songwriting, with altered tunings, and the sounds and rhythms of Hawaii.

Produced, Recorded, and Mixed by Mike Shipley, who lists Joni Mitchell, Shania Twain, Don Henley, and Sting,among others, as some of the artists he's worked with.

Featuring performances by Graham Nash of Crosby Stills and Nash, on backing vocals, on "The Navigator", (a song about the life of David Crosby, who along with Graham Nash, gave Allan some of the alternate tunings that he uses on this song and others.)

Also featuring Ken Emerson on Lead Fender, National Steel, and Hawaiian Lap Steel Slide guitars. Ken has played with Todd Rundgren, Jackson Browne, and Moe Keale, among others, and is considered one of Hawaii's top Slide/Slack Key and Hawaiian Lap Steel players.

"Coconut Culture" also features the keyboard wizardry and co-writing of Michael Ruff, who has written for Bonnie Riatt, Kenny Loggins and Natalie Cole, among others, and who has played with Rickie Lee Jones, David Sanborn, and Todd Rundgren, to name a few.

Bryan Kessler, producer and songwriter for the popular Hawaiian Style Band, also lends a hand with some acoustic guitar playing and a co-write.

This album is amazing! The sounds and textures will take you for a tropical ride on the wave of Allan's heartfelt words. Mike Shipley's engineering and production are, as always, superb; imaginative and refined. Graham Nash, Mike Ruff, Ken Emerson, and a host of others filling in - its awesome!

if you want to try and take some of kauai home with you when you leave the island..you best get a copy of coconut culture...allan will give you 'a hit' of kauai to feel when you are so far away...his music will bring you back to the island, for but a brief and perfect feeling of aloha..

Allan Thomas has put poetry to music through his songs. You can tell that there is a personal inspiration to his songwriting. His music is easily identifiable with island life by its footloose and carefree nature and his love songs are easy to relate to. It is obvious he puts alot of thought into his words which always tell a story in an original way sort of like James Taylor,Paul Simon or Cat Stevens. Yet his music is easy to listen to and often has a catchy tune that makes you want to sing along.Highly recomended for its lightness and inspiration

200 years ago in Hawaii... there were no plantations, no ranches, no missionaries, no visitor industry, no hotels, no radio, no multitracking, no singing (only chanting), no overdubbing, no lyrics to engage the talking head, no record company formulas... no entertainment industry...

There were a few Hawaiian men and women who were the original recipients of a "new" instrument called a guitar. Sitting in the peaceful splendor of their environment, they created a unique art form called ki ho'alu -- Hawaiian slack key guitar. They were inspired by simple, natural wonders... the little crabs skittering to and fro on the beach, the moon shimmering off the deep seas, the mist swirling around the mountains, the honu (sea turtles) riding the giant rolling waves, the soft whispering tradewinds, the ua lani pili (rains from the near heavens), ...

Island of Peace, the newest release by Doug & Sandy McMaster, is ki ho'alu in this real old style. Nothing more, nothing less. Enhanced to include a FREE video, screensaver, photo gallery, and more when you put the CD in your computer. The video is a little taste of the magical sunsets by Hanalei Bay on the mystical island of Kauai.

One of our favorite tracks is the title song, Island of Peace, which was a gift from a baby humpback whale that was born in the middle of Hanalei Bay on February 18, 2002 as we and our sunset slack key 'ohana watched on and serenaded the sun to bed. The name Island of Peace was the gift of a visiting monk.

In fact, every single cut on this CD is excellent....I highly recommend it to any Parrothead!!

If clear blue ocean water, white sandy beaches and a soft tropical breeze is something you enjoy. then let Eric and his music take you there. You may also want a pina colada to go along with it.

Although I've been torn as to which of Eric's CDs are the best,
I keep coming back to this one. A terrific artist, genuine and
talented. I have had the pleasure of hearing him live ( both
on a boat with just a few friends, and at a large party in
Antigua ) and he continues to entertain year after year !!

So much so that he's endorsed by Latitudes and Attitudes Sailing Magazine, Sunsail Charter Cruises and holds the title of Official Entertainer of the Sail America Boatshows all over the country. How kewl is that? I have the pleasure of knowing him personally, and his personality is truly reflected in his music, he writes from the heart. This is one of three great albums about sailing life with many of the songs written by Eric Stone himself. No sailboat should be without these great hits. When I am sailing and put on one of his albums, I feel like I just, "Died and went to heaven." Good clean fun songs about ocean life, sailing, the Caribbean, and fun ballads. Jimmy Buffett has nothing on this guy; Eric is all about beaches, bars, ballads, and boats.

I first discovered Eric Stone's music at the Chicago Sailboat Show at Navy Pier a few years ago. He's a one man show, with a voice like Jimmy Buffet. We picked up his Songs for Sail CD for our boat, and listened to it regularly, even in the off season. The songs are a mix of fun and relaxation, and they'll make you wish you were on a beach (or sailboat) watching the sunset with a drink in hand, a straw hat on your head, and your sweetie by your side.

This CD is crammed full of traditional music that will make any fiddler's heart and feet dance. While the technical merits are what you would expect from traditional fiddlers, that is no detraction from the enjoyment of this music.
