Uneven quality but great value.......2007-04-30

Brilliant Classics has found a niche with their extremely low-price multi-disc collections of the work of a single composer or performer. The Bach, Mozart and Chopin Complete Editions are legitimately considered to be artistic and economical triumphs. But the Masterworks series are more uneven. Currently available from Amazon France at about a buck per CD, they're still a bargain for those interested in quickly building a music library. But it's worth keeping a few things in mind. Unlike the Bach and Mozart Editions, these are not always historically informed performances. In this Mendelssohn set, the Hanover Band puts in a cameo (in Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage), but most of the ensembles use modern instruments, techniques and proportions. This doesn't always work out, as in the case of the ponderously heavy recordings of the String Symphonies by an apparently full complement of Gewandhausorchester Leipzig strings (Mendelssohn likely wrote these early works for a much smaller group). The caliber of the performances varies too, ranging from good to poor, and from marquis musicians such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau to a few Dutch who-dats. The chamber musicians generally acquit themselves well (though the Octet recording is marred by an engineering flaw in the last movement, distortion, at least on my copy). But the symphonies suffer from some substandard performances, such as the Italian Symphony's live recording with not only audience noise but also ensemble flaws such as a distracting clarinet squeak in the first movement's recapitulation. Another strike is the lack of program notes. Brilliant's Complete Editions provide a booklet or CD-ROM with program notes, but here you'll need to do your own research.

Despite these shortcomings, this set is still good value (at least at Amazon France's current price of 31 Euros). And it's a fine way to become acquainted with Mendelssohn's music.

A superb collection of Mendelssohn.......2007-03-24

Let me preface this by saying that most of these works were not new to me - I own many other Mendelssohn CDs and have enjoyed his compositions for some time now. Also, this set is available much cheaper elsewhere, particularly from European retailers.
The symphonies are well-performed. 'Reformation' is an inspired live recording. The 12 string symphonies, written in Mendelssohn's youth, are also included. The concertos are exceptional - the violin concerto is as good as you'll find anywhere. The oratorios Elijah and Paulus are included, as well as the complete chamber works and a diverse assortment of choral works. The last few discs include the Lied ohne worte, the epic organ sonatas, and excellent renditions of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Fingal's Cave. While there are a few sketchy performances in the choral and chamber works, the performances and recordings are generally very solid, and the body of work couldn't be better.

nice old cd.......2005-02-27

It's a pity that you can't buy this CD in Germany, when you are below 18, that's why this record is called "ab 18". It contains only seven songs, but these songs are finest punk-rock with funny lyrics. My favorite song is "Geschwisterliebe" which was recorded on a concert and "Sweet Sweet Gwendoline". The big disadvantage is the price; it's as expensive as a normal record with more than 15 songs, and some of these few songs I owned already on the CD "Debil". But besides the prize it's a very nice CD, so I choose 4 stars.

Dieses Album ist genial! In Deutschland ist es verboten, daher habe ich es hier erworben! Es sind ein paar wenige Tracks auf der CD, das tut ihr allerdings keinen Abbruch! 100% Recommended!!! TOP.

Short, but entertaining.......2001-01-23

This record (first issued in 1987) contains all the songs that were the cause for the lp's "Debil" and "Die Ärzte" to be put on the index (i.e. in Germany they may not be bought by or given to persons aged under 18... even today): "Claudia I" plus its successor "Claudia II"; the infamous "Schlaflied"; or perhaps the most offending Ärzte song ever, "Geschwisterliebe". The compilation is completed by some new tracks, e.g. "Helmut K." (which deals with former German chancellor Helmut Kohl beating up his poor wife and so on...). It's amazing how tame most songs on "Ab 18" sound today, as you encounter themes worse than these almost everywhere in the news. It's all quite entertaining, but for a fully-priced record, seven songs are really too few - three-star rating, though.

a kick in the a** for german censorship.......2000-07-25

this CD is actually a compilation brought together because most of the song are "Indiziert" in Germany, which means you are not allowed to advertise this CD neither sell it to people below the age of 18, that's why it's called "ab 18". Mostly the songs are taken from their first two albums. Great Punk-Rock with tremendous amount of explicit lyrics, if you are familiar with the German language. Best Track "Geschwisterliebe", a beautifull ballad about the love between brother and sister that gets to far which in case of "Die Aerzte" means really far.

Delightful music sung well.......2000-12-01

As a choral singer, I find that I only gain an appreciation for most music through the process of singing it. It's rare that I'll automatically like a musical piece upon first listening. Well, this recording captures music that I enjoyed immediately. Sweelinck is not that well known a composer, and unjustly so. The music of Sweelinck presented here is gorgeous.

The Choir of Clare College sings sensitively, especially through the many abrupt meter changes. Blend is excellent. The picture of the choir in the liner notes shows a choir of 32, yet they sound like a choir a fraction of their size. The organ playing is especially well done--providing a light tonal background, yet never getting in the way. And this set is a bargain--2 CDs for the price of one. Highly recommended. It would be a good introduction for someone who wants to get their feet wet in Renaissance music in general, and Latin sacred choral music in particular.

These performances are simply beautiful. Marlow conducts his singers in a flowing manner, always with great attention to the intricacies of Sweelinck's harmonies. The acoustics are perfect, and the voices well rounded throughout. Now for the compositions...

Sweelinck is a master of vocal writing, and no piece displays this as well as the first "Non Omnis..". It's harmonies are heavenly and show Sweelinck in his characteristic attention to the meaning of the words. A true tone painter, Sweelinck's compositions represent the aesthetic of a soon to be gone Renaissance with an exploration of the new tonal combinations to be found in the Baroque. Polyphony at its finest and harmonic beauty at its most simple and complex. Sweelinck is indeed a great composer and deserves more recognition.

This recording is highly recommended to all who would hear the beauty of the human voice in the aesthetic of Sweelinck.

A lovely CD, well worth owning.......2002-06-18

What a treat -- I found this CD tucked away in the "used CD" rack at a small local music store that normally specializes in grunge and offbeat rock music. People who know me will know that I can never resist a good choral recording, and when the music is Renaissance to boot, well - then I am in heaven. What intrigued me about this recording was that I had never even heard of Sweelinck and was therefore quite curious to know what his music was like; I was also aware that Trinity College Chapel Choir, Cambridge is a fine one and so I assumed the music had to be good. And, of course, it is!

Being a choral music performer and enthusiast rather than knowledgeable scholar, I won't attempt to offer any impressive analysis of Sweelinck's music or compare him in fancy terms to other composers of the era, but I can attest that this is music I enjoy very much. The mood is light and sweet, but not trite, with lots of lively counterpoint and some very pretty melodies. And the silvery pure tone of the singing here is absolutely lovely. The sopranos dominate the sound slightly but this is not a problem at all as their voices are clear and beautiful. It is really a shame that during my first and only visit to Cambridge, which occurred last year, I did not have the opportunity to hear any of its fine choirs. I do plan to make a return trip at some point in the future to rectify that, and will now add Trinity College Chapel Choir to my list of "must-hear" choirs when I am there.
