Ya Taleb is a collection of 10 tracks from the '80s, when cheap cassettes were used to distribute the music to a grassroots following. The bad boy of rai's voice sounds robust, and his presentation is passionate throughout, revealing the early glimmers of a star. Not nearly as dynamic as Khaled's voice, the music is filled with primitive synthesizers. And the cheese factor is considerably higher here than on his excellent albums from 2000 and 2001, Kenza and 1,2,3 Soleils, which used an orchestra and had more advanced production. Ya Taleb is better suited for longtime Khaled fans who have worn out their cassettes than for anyone who enjoyed his recent recordings. But for those willing to get into the spirit of things, there is enough personality to make this fun listening. --Tad Hendrickson
