Wow!.......2007-08-05
This is a great CD. I just used the music to dance at a show. A real crowd pleaser, and fun to dance to. I agree it brings bellydance into the 21st century, yet it also maintains "real" bellydance rhythms.
I would love to see another of these CD's soon please!

Very calming and relaxing drumming.......2007-05-08
This is a very nice CD when I put it in to play my whole house relaxed and clamed down and just listened very nice. The drumming is fantatsic, but if you do not like native american flutes not a CD for you in some parts of the CD the flutes are very loud. But I really enjoy this CD.
Drum Medicine.......2007-01-12
I really enjoy both CD's Sacred Spirit Drums and Drum Medicine. I live in an area of very little resource for this type of purchase- I was very happy to find what I wanted online- also very glad to be able to listen before I purchased- would not have bought them without that. Service was the best- shipping was also very good.. I will consider this type of purchase again when needed.
Awesome Drum CD.......2006-07-13
This CD is awesome I have it in my car now and that is all I play.
Drum Medicine rocks........2006-03-11
This is the best cd for playing along with drums or dancing up a storm.
Incredible - can this be the work of two white men?????.......2005-09-01
You have to listen to this CD to believe it. I hear the Native American flute, drums .... it's one incredible CD. I bought it to learn to drum but enjoy listening to it just for relaxation, trance states, etc. This is superb!

No words to describe.......2005-09-01
There are really no other proper words to describe the music on this CD other than to say THE BEST. Haunting, melodious, peaceful, and it brings you a step closer to nature regardless of whether you are sitting inside a room or in your car while listening to the CD. I've become a fan of the Native American culture ever since I heard their flute music for the first time. This CD is packed with melodious and haunting sounds of their flutes, the low frequency sounds of their drums which sound like thunder, and to top them all of with a good sprinkling of the chirping of birds and the shrieking sounds of the soaring eagles. The first song "Creator's Prayer" gives you an idea of what to expect in the rest of the CD. Simply the best. The more I listen to the CD, the more addicted I get to the subtle sounds of nature which I miss while leading a city life filled with highway noise, cop car sirens, and tv mumbo jumbos.
Wow!.......2004-12-31
Absolutely beautiful! I just wish the CD was longer. The songs just carry me away to a peaceful place (especially the first one). I listen to it about every morning when I wake up; that's how good it is.
Trible Winds.......2003-09-19
This music is great. The best so far. I use it to metatate. I can close my eyes and picture my great-grand father as a child on the reservation and I can see a happy child in the yeay 1866.There isn't much out there to put me in a space of peace.
"THIS KNOWLEDGE WILL COME TO YOU...".......2002-02-13
You must be quiet to understand the beauty in this Treasure. Quiet inside yourself. Every inch of you, every cell, every fiber of your being. I have owned this a long time and haven't fully appreciated it until now. Why? Because I wasn't truly listening. To listen you must slow down, come to a stop, be calm and OPEN. Now and only now, can you Listen. Oh Yes. Eyes closed, mind empty of all thoughts and TRULY LISTENING...
The music is very POWERFUL. Its power is so subtle that I didn't comprehend it at first. Now I do. The Indians deserve our respect. They are in touch with their Spirits.
I leave you with a quote from "Wind In My Mind" which epitomizes the essence of TRIBAL WINDS:
"I ONCE SAT ON A HILL AND AS I GAZED ACROSS THE LAND
I HEARD A SONG ON THE WIND
I TURNED AND WATCHED THE PRAIRIE GRASSES MOVE TO THE RHYTHM
NOT JUST TO ONE SONG--BUT TO MANY
AS I FOCUSED ON THE HORIZON I REALIZED I WAS HEARING THE SONGS
OF ALL TIME
I WAS LISTENING TO TRIBAL WINDS."
Soar my friends. This will aid you in your journey. My Highest recommendation to the Seekers. TRIBAL WINDS is a FIND.

It's been 14 years since Michael Brook did a proper solo album, Cobalt Blue, but that doesn't mean the guitarist has been absent from music. He's produced and performed on pop recordings by Julia Fordham and Jorane and made numerous albums for the Real World label, including signature releases by the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Djivan Gasparyan, and Hukwe Zawose. He's also composed and performed on film scores and was part of Hans Zimmer's soundtrack posse, contributing notably to Black Hawk Down, among others. He throws all of that into his new album, RockPaperScissors, which could've been called RockPaperScissors and Whatever, as Brook slices up a career's worth of influences and drops them in one load--albeit an elegant one. Lebanese violinist Claude Chalhoub turns in a mournful duet with Brook on "Tangerine," singer Paul Buchanan shows up on the title track, and a Bulgarian choir turns up incongruously on a dreamy, '60s style guitar instrumental, "LightStar." There are King Crimson-like guitar grooves on "3 Doges," and on "Darker Room," a spoken-word sample of Richard Burton performing Dylan Thomas's "Under Milk Wood," quoting the "Starless and bible-black" line that Crimson connoisseurs will note as the title to a one of their albums. Given Brooks's extensive work as a film composer and session artist, it makes sense that much of the disc has a cinematic quality, with many tracks featuring a full orchestra. Excepting Lisa Germano's haunting turn on "Want", the other two vocal tunes drag. Rather than honing a sound, as he did with Cobalt Blue, RockPaperScissors brims with too many ideas, as if Brook thought it might be another 14 years till his next album and he had to get it all out now. --John Diliberto
Customer Reviews:
Bold, Beautiful, Haunting.......2006-10-26
So compelling is this CD that on the rare occasions when the house empties, the first thing I do is turn on RockPaperScissors. It requires closer attention; one listening and you are entranced-at least I was. Then it resonates within you. Oh, Tangerine is so sweet and haunting. The Bulgarian Orchestra, Bulgarian Classical Choir, the Cosmic Voices- wow, it adds such a large dramatic sensation. I Loved Richard Burton doing Dylan Thomas in Dark Room. Bold, Beautiful, Haunting.
Wow........2006-08-09
I heard Mr. Brook on Weekend Edition, thought he sounded like a great guy and I wanted to support him and his new album he spoke so eloquently about. RPS, as I call it now, came a couple days ago, and this might be a bit cheesy, but I believe this album to be magical. Somewhat a musician myself I am amazed at the seamlessness and gorgeousness of transitions every time I listen to any piece on this record. Brook very masterfully goes from electric guitar to an orchestra to a Bulgarian choir and it's so great that 1. I wish I had written it and 2. why doesn't everyone put a Bulgarian choir on their album!? It's just really beautiful. I can't even pick my favorite piece because honestly my answer changes every time I listen to it.
Supposedly this new album is a slight departure from previous works, if other online reviews are to be believed, and if it is, it is a departure to beauty and lushiness and exquisite detail that is so very worth listening to.
sublime razors' edge.......2006-08-01
I am a longtime and loyal fan of Michael Brook. I believe him to be a brilliantly innovative and creative musical force. I was extremely excited when I heard he was coming out with a long overdue solo release.
'Cobalt Blue' is still one of my all-time favorites and his collaborations with Nusret Fateh Ali Khan and Djivan Gasparyan are equally powerful and compelling offerings. All masterpieces.
Brook has such a unique way of structuring his compositions, and when coupled with his experimental sonic approach it's just breathtaking. So many unpredictable and engrossing sounds, but not in a self-important way. It is very mindful of the vast expressive sea in which he swims in.
Upon repeated listenings within the past few days, I have to say that that "RockPaperScissors" is very captivating and engaging. Though I also enjoyed it upon first listen, I somewhat agree with the other review below that it didn't fully sink in upon first listen. I'm glad it didn't. I usually find that the greatest work - music that penetrates deeply and lasts over time - usually has to possess this enigmatic quality. Michael Brook has captured it in spades.
I also read the critical review and see that person's point; the album at first is a bit wide in its scope. Yes, it is representative of Brooks' entire oeuvre, but in the best of ways. Even Brook describes it as a 'travelogue'. In the end, it absolutely adds up to much more than the sum of its parts, and thus, it is great art.
However, I don't believe that the particular reviewer who wrote that review allowed himself the pleasure of repeatedly listening to this sublime recording. There are many layers here, both sonically and vibrationally (if you know what I mean), which cannot possibly be absorbed in one or two surface listens. It is also important to be in the 'right' environment and headspace to openly receive this type of reverent music.
Having heard "RockPaperScissors" now seven or eight times I fully 'get it'. It truly is a masterpiece. In some ways better than other previous albums, but only time will tell.
Though I love the entire collection of songs, highlights for me are: "Strange Procession" is classic Brook, with abrupt changes in tempo and haunting guitar notes. "Doges" is a polished and primal ethno-trance sure to pull you into the jungle muse. The title track, "Rock Paper Scissors" even works for me; Buchanans' voice works perfectly with Brooks' sonic weave . "Light Star" perfectly builds into crescendos with the assistance of a surprising contrasted Bulgarian chorus. Again it totally works, very well I may add. "Silverized" is my favorite; it's just gorgeous and terribly beautiful. It reminds me a bit of Eno & Lanois' "Deep Blue Day" from "Apollo" soundtracks, which may simulataneously be the most inspiring and deeply sad song ever recorded.
I only hope we don't have to wait another 14 years for Brook to come out with another solo recording. He is far too gifted and amazing to just allow those he works with to take centerstage. Shine on Michael Brook! Thanks for all of your creative energy, it is very appreciated.
P.S. For those who may be interested, check out an interview NPR had with him on Sundays 'Weekend Edition' (July 30, 2006). Nice insight and very humbling indeed.
Really really beautiful.......2006-07-28
The first time I listened to this new album I quite liked it but wasn't blown away. A fellow Brook fan told me to give it one more listen and as I did I was fascinated by a billion details that I'd missed on the first time around. I was amazed and yes, blown away. It's a gorgeous piece of work ---- Tangerine in particular. It's all stunning, really.

Good music and features Babatunde Olatunji.......2003-04-19
This is the same CD as "All The Best From Africa" but at a lower price. Why? Don't know. I would have given it a five star but a lot of the songs fade out long before they are done. It has a good selection of different kinds of music, vocal, percussion, string, etc. The main reason I like it so much is that it features Babatunde Olatunji on tracks 2,3, and 14-20. This is rarely heard Baba music especially to those only familier with his "Drums Of Passion" recordings. Some of the sound quality is not that great but I've heard much worse on other recordings. The CD also has squat for liner notes, but all in all, for the price, it's definately worth it.
wonderful.......2001-06-13
i love this C.D. it's been providing hours of dancing.
The price is right.......2000-06-12
Having purchased and listened to many, many cd's on African and Afro-centric music this one rates right down the middle. While not electrifying (as some are) this gives you a middle of the road. text-book overview of "tribal music" in Africa. I have found on many of this type of compilation that many of the titles are mediocre at best. I would highly recommend the cd, "Africa; Music of a Continent" that accompanied a African Arts show in London. I would also like to see more liner notes on the tribes themselves w/ their histories, i.e. The Griot of West Africa. All in all $4.00 + shipping is pretty much a bargain, especially if you will be using this for a classroom.

Meditation & Healing Music.......2007-06-03
This is a great CD and certainly unique. First of all, anything I have purchased by Steven Halpern has been great. This is the type of music that you would play during a Reiki energy-healing session, or something similar. It is also great for meditation. I just want you to understand, this is not what most people call "music". There is chanting, to Tibetan and Japanese temple bowls to Tibetan bells to harmonic keyboard vibrational sounds. Oh, and we have gongs and "OM" chanting, too. "Tonal Alchemy" also begins with a unique recording made inside the Great Pyramid in Egypt. That, to me, is beyond cool. This CD is also about using sound to heal (self and others). (If you don't already know, sound and colors are also used as healing modalities.)
It's hard for me to really describe this CD, because most "normal" people would probably not "get it". This is more for the spiritual type person, who is into healing, or meditation, and or spiritual advancement. This is a "vibration thing," like a clear your mind and connect your chakras and feel your head vibrate type CD. If you don't know what I'm talking about, this is probably not for you.
On the other hand, if you DO understand what I'm saying, this is a good one and different. It also makes a great gift for anyone you know who is into these types of alternate therapies. So, crack out the crystals, light the candles, and put on this CD. Better yet, make a crystal grid. This vibration is awesome.
There are 17 tracks, totalling a hair under 1 hour and 7 minutes, certainly ample time to let it run during a Reiki session or meditation.
Just what I was looking for.......2006-12-05
I've tried meditation and self hypnosis techniques for years--not well, but at least making the effort!--but I've never found music that I felt really encouraged the practice or helped expand my potential. I was looking for something like Tintinabulation, which involves bells from temples. Halpern's work is even more arresting than Tintinabulation. Rather than the continuous resonance of bells, his pieces are more varied. Takahashi flutes, drums, crystal bowls, as well as temple bells are played with each segment of the recording having a slightly different tonal character and texture. I find that I can select the recording I feel comfortable with and put it on replay while attempting meditation and it truly does help me concentrate. I'm very pleased. This is not just New Age music--which I also like--it's actually intended for those who want to create an environment conductive to meditation. I plan on giving a copy to several friends. Superb.
some of the best music out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-05-04
I purchased this CD at the bookstore it features ancient tibetan & Japenese bowls! track #9 features a gong being hit three times. this is a great introduction to far east asia music! if you buy it you will like it!!
Let your Spirit Soar.......2005-12-15
As a long-time fan of Steven Halpern, this is one of his best projects yet. If you are a fan of Tibetan signing bowls, then this is the CD for you. It is a great meditation tool...you can OM away with the surrealistic sounds.
My only criticism would be that on occasion, between cuts, there is a long empty silence when you're not exactly sure if the CD is over yet. As an example, on cut #17, there is total silence for several minutes and then Whoops! you hear the faint meditative sounds..then total silence again.
I fall asleep each night to the beautiful sounds of Steven Halpern. I have most of his CD's; you can't beat him for relaxing, smooth, meditative music....I always, always fall asleep before the CD is over! His music puts you in a totally beautiful, spiritual, sublime place.

Customer Reviews:
the best compilation!!!!.......2007-02-21
This CD is by far the best compilation of ATS/fusion music!!!! Every song is great!!!! I am a ATS belly dance teacher in a small town in Colorado, and I don't have access to new music that I can listen to. So I really rely on who's on the front and who's reviewed it. Whoever rated this CD before me was very accurate. Very usable for classes and choreography. Thanks to all who contributed.

Learning.......2007-06-08
I will never study again without this product. I found I can study a lot longer while using this product.
Zen Capitalism (ý mole, or do you want more?).......2006-04-16
Halpern is a great artist... and a gret money-maker. Each "new" title has the same songs, sometimes with different names... A little swindle... Zen swindle, I would say... But I love them all anyway.
O cara "lan?a" na maior cara-de-pau CD's com diferentes nomes, mas com as mesmas m?sicas (que tamb?m mudam de nome)... ? mole, or do you want more?
Excellent for studying.......2002-11-17
I love this CD! I often put it in my personal CD player and take it to the coffee shop to help me as I study French. The music is relaxing but not sleep-inducing. Steven Halpern composes great music.

Nice background music for studying.......2001-04-02
This is my first Steve Halpern album. I'm not sure if the subliminals in this CD do any good, but the new age music on it is nice, relaxing, and not annoying. It is not distracting either. I use it to study with and it certainly helps block out unwanted noise.

Music from a Painted Cave is the live concert recording from the like-named PBS television special. Here, composer, flautist, and vocalist Robert Mirabal joins up with the soulfully skilled band he calls the Rare Tribal Mob. Together, they move into an exciting musical territory where traditional native music seamlessly fuses with tasteful acoustic rock. Mirabal and the Mob perform just over an hour of music, including both new songs and reinterpretations of older favorites such as "Medicine Man" and "Painted Caves," both of which appear on the stellar Taos Tales. Cello, guitars, bass, and percussion weave a solid, challenging, and engaging web in which Mirabal's deceptively simple songs grow particularly powerful. Innovative and magical, Music from a Painted Cave invites the listener to engage in a sonic celebration of native culture. --Paige La Grone

fantastic.......2007-07-26
I was fortunate to see Robert perform on stage and if you ever get the chance to see him live - do it! This is one of my favorite CD's and the DVD is fabulous as well. Worth every cent..
Serious Soul Retrival.......2007-02-19
I really hate to call some sound mixes just music, there should be another word invented here. This isn't music, it's more like sounds that can unravel those twisted-guts-feelings that daily life can throw our way. There are multitudes of sounds that can soothe-the-soul, kind of like what aloe gel does for a burn, but to actually remove those splinters that causes festering can take a more serious measure. Robert Mirabel opened himself up to hear messages from the ancestors, and reproduced those subtle sounds into a self healing media of sound vibrations. A transporter of energies is in this mix, that removes the unusable- and misguiding, and replaces these with useful energies that centers us on obtainable paths.
From the Depths of the Soul.......2007-01-16
I would love to give this beautiful work of Mirabal's 10 stars. Every piece on this CD is absolutely beautiful. My favorites are "Medicine Man" and "1000 Miles."
I also love the way Mirabal mixes different genres of music together. (This is not your traditional tribal music.) I believe those who are open to Mirabal's interpretation and expression of what's in his soul will not be disappointed.
Robert's Best yet........2006-06-25
I bought this album after listenng to a few cuts on line. I was absolutely taken with Robert's live performance and the music. If you are into Native American music, this one is a must. I loved it so much, I bought the DVD which is absolutely awesome/
If You Love The Music Get The DVD! Awesome!.......2006-04-04
The music is something that takes you by suprise. Compelling... He has a way of making the music come alive. A storyteller in lyrical content. Love His Music! It not just Native sounds but is also serious drumming, rock & techno based as well. This one is also in DVD form. To see it & hear the music is just Awesome! He really tries to teach & open the eyes of the unknowing.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
