5 out of 5 stars early christian music.......2007-04-19

Great music this is the music practiced in the early centuries of the Church, before the western church destoryed a lot of it.This is so emotionally it energizes you to praise God. They did a great job reconstructing the chants Great Buy

4 out of 5 stars Mozarabic Chant - Emphasis on ARABIC.......2006-03-25

I'm sure other reviewers comments about this work and generally about Mozarabic chant in general are true. Christianity originated in the east and Mozarabic chant's less polished, austere qualities most likely resembles ancient christian chant. The quality of the work is unquestioned.

But for a person whose hearing sensibilities have been so influenced by western gregorian chant, the heavy arabic influence in the music may prove a hard listen for the western ear.

You definately want to listen to the samples before purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Byzantine Chant in Latin/Latin sung in Byzantine Chant.......2001-09-07

It is Byzantine Chant sung in Latin. Think of Latin hymns sung by a Byzantine soloist, two or more singers, or a choir. Lycorgos Angelopoulos is a godsend as he finally sings the Latin hymns right because I have always wondered what the Latin would sound like sung by somebody with a thick Greek accent. This recording is similar to other recordings by the Ensemble Organum. The melodies are characterized by an ison(drone). Marcel Peres also does a fine job of singing Byzantine Chant in Latin even though he is not Greek. To me, this singing is THE original Gregorian Chant and what Gregorian Chant should sound like. The Gregorian Chant that most people hear and think of as Greg. Chant is actually the Solesmes style which is an interpretation of Greg. Chant and should not be synonymous with Greg.Chant. The Solesmes style is too polished and refined for early Christian chant and is therefore not historically accurate even though it is the official one used in the Latin rite(not Latin language) since 1850. Early Christian chant to me sounded more austere and ascetic and this recording along with the other Ensemble Organum recordings(Old Roman Chant, Beneventan Chant, Ambrosian Chant, etc.) proves that this is what Gregorian Chant really and originally sounded like.

5 out of 5 stars The Latin Mass meets the Arab Moors.......2001-08-20

Marcel Peres has done a fine job of recording an excellent representation (and in the process made available) of one of the rarest and least-known of all liturgical traditions.

The Mozarabic Rite, which survives in the Spanish cathedrals of Toledo and Salamanca alone, is a sumptuous feast for the ears and senses. Combining the immortal Latin phraseology of the Mass and its various parts, the Mozarabic tradition colors them with a temperament totally unique. Diverging from the unadorned, simple, appropriately named plain-chant of the Gregorian tradition, the Mozarabic formula incorporates Arab musical influences to the most Christian of events, the sacrifice of the Mass and holy communion.

Peres' Ensemble Organum does a head-dizzying job of making the melismatas (long variations and note changes on one vowel or sound) breathlessly exciting to listen to. Its apparent at once that this music is singular among the world's traditions, and deserves to be heard by more people. It is a masterful recording, done in Toledo's Capilla Mozarabe (Mozarabic Chapel) in the Cathedral, and even without the visual stimulation of the church, the music alone with the magnificent acoustics transports the listener 1,000 years back to days when the Christian Mozarabes developed a rite all their own amidst Islamic controlled Moorish Spain. This disc should be of interest to any sociologist or historian of Spain and especially Spain of the Mediaeval Age. The political and social confrontations of the two cultures - European Christian and Arabic Muslim - produce an exotic result that we may enjoy today.

The music is first-rate, but if another reason is needed, it is the rarity of this type of recording. A low-priced, excellent disc of this repertoire is, quite simply, impossible to find elsewhere. You may find a track on perhaps one or two other chronological collections of western liturgical music, but no other complete recording exists devoted wholly to the style. Marcel Peres is known for his exhaustive research into authenticity and his drive to accurately record liturgical rites as they were really heard in their heyday - and in this instance he performs admirably. Participate in the Mass of the Mozarabic people and enjoy an experience that will undoubtedly highlight the cultural connection between east and west and may also spark an interest in further exploration of the rite and its times!

4 out of 5 stars (4.5 stars) The real deal.......2007-01-14

How many times have you - an extreme metal fan - bought a new C.D. and listened to it with anticipation only to discover you've already heard the album a countless number of times before? Considering how much really unoriginal music there is in the world today, it's safe to say that that has probably happened to you at least a few times. However, you may have also noticed that some unoriginal albums are better than others, and you can even have so much fun listening to an album that you forget how many times you've already heard it. The reason for this is simple: Musical delivery counts for almost everything.

Case and point: Norwegian black metal quartet Gorgoroth. Their seventh full length, last year's "Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam," breaks absolutely no new ground for the band or the genre, but the fact is it rocks incredibly hard, energetically, and convincingly, so it's nearly impossible for one to care if it isn't particularly unique.

These eight compositions are the real deal, folks: evil black metal through and through. And even though there are more than a few bands playing this type of music nowadays, Gorgoroth can definitely still do it better than most. Almost nobody even comes close to these masters for successfully combining crushing heaviness, quality songwriting, impeccable musicianship, and steadfast consistency. Plus, "Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam" features some nice, meticulous textures and dynamics, so it is substantially hookier and easier to digest, and less predictable and one-dimensional than the typical black metal release.

Frost (A.K.A. Kjetil-Vidar Haraldstad), the seminal black metal skinsman who is world-renowned for his godly talent, appears here on his first Gorgoroth album since he left the band in 1996. He makes his presence known right away, too, by launching into a barrage of persistent, smashing, octo-limbed, carnage-inducing blast beats on the fierce set opener "Wound Upon Wound." Most of the rest of these songs are equally as brutal, but they're interspersed with restrained, more melodic numbers so the disc doesn't become monotonous. For instance, after the next track, "Carving a Giant," grinds to a close, "God Seed (Twilight of the Idols)," storms onto the scene with breakneck speed, and Gaahl's hideous, retching vocals go to battle against Frost's walloping trapkit and Infernus' scalding, revved-up guitar leads. Other highlights include the crunching, ultra-doomy guitars and melodic (almost choral) backing vocals on the bone-chilling "Sign of an Open Eyes," Frost's bottom-heavy, jackhammer double bass kicks that anchor "White Seed," the ridiculously fast blasts, machine gun riffs, and softly strummed outro of "Exit," and "Untamed Forces," which contrasts almost grindcore-worthy brutality (i.e. great, massive riffs, smoking leads, busy, slamming drums, bludgeoning rhythms, attack-the-jugular tempos, and robotic vocals) with an astonishingly slow part where (what sounds like) acoustic guitars enter the picture!

If the record loses any points for anything, it's for being so short (since it's only 31 minutes long, and the listener feels like they need another song or two.) That aside, though, all black/extreme metal fans who don't need innovation in music to enjoy it will find it extremely hard not to be very satisfied with "Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam."

4 out of 5 stars .......2006-08-28

This band continues unleashing barbaric black metal mayhem and despite the close relationship that the singer and the law has had recently, it hasn't stopped them from continuing to corrupt the ears of the feeble and strengthen the minds of the converted. Gorgoroth are masters at what they do-they captivate your attention through well-placed slow monstrous passages while balancing it out with all-out bursts of chaotic noise. There's a lot of filth emanating from the material, enough to make the normal listener turn away with disgust and that's just fine. The fact that Frost makes a return-to-form to the Gorgoroth ranks and gives a hellish performance is a mere bonus.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgoroth is still strong!.......2006-08-06

I got into Gorgoroth about a year and a half ago and bought all of their albums. Of course I was looking forward to this release and when I heard the samples, I knew I had to buy it when possible. Then I finally got my hands on this CD and I was not disappointed.

To me, this is a great example of Black Metal. Everyone in the band does their part very well here. Gaahl's vocals sound very evil. Infernus's guitars, as the backbone of this music, instill a nice dark feeling to the songs. King's bass adds well to the music. Frost again does an excellent job with the drums and it's easy to see why they hired him.

As I listen to this CD, I sometimes get mixed vibes from their other works, particularly from Pentagram and Twilight Of The Idols. White Seed sounds like it was inspired by Destroyer's title track as it opens with a flurry of drums and demonic sounds (but quieter this time).

Sign Of An Open Eye reminds me of songs such as Teeth Grinding and Latini Til Satan, since it's a slow paced song. Of course, slow songs can still be great, and Open Eye is no exception.

I like all of the songs but my favourites are Wound Upon Wound, Carving A Giant and Untamed Forces (the title tells no lies about the song!).

5 out of 5 stars Best Gorgoroth album in years.......2006-07-18

Gorgoroth's new album is heavy, fast, and (although it may sound cheesy) as grim as a black metal album should be. It's a refreshing release reminiscent of something as good as the "golden age" 90s Norweigan black metal releases, but still with its own unique twist. In this album they've abandoned a lot of the experimentation in terms of electronica and noise and stuck with straight black metal, which makes the album much better than the last 2 or 3 Gorgoroth albums. "Sign of an Open Eye" reminds one of slow early 90s Darkthrone and Immortal songs, which adds to the overall atmosphere and complements the rest of the album.

Instrumentally, the drumming from Frost of Satyricon is very well done and he continues to show he is a top notch extreme metal drummer. Infernus's guitars have their classic feel of simple reverberating dark melody complemented by bursts of noise and distortion. King's bass is absolutely necessary for the sound of the album although it is difficult to hear over the guitar (as with most black metal recordings). Gaahl's vocals on this album are much better than on Twilight of the Idols.

Overall a very, very good black metal album, especially in a genre where many of the big names have almost abandoned their black metal roots entirely, Gorgoroth has released a modern classic, surpassing modern releases by other big names like Mayhem, Darkthrone and Satyricon by miles.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgoroth's new album sounds much heavier.......2006-07-16

I bought this album on here not to long ago. When i heard the songs on this album they sound more heavier and agressive.Gaahl's vocals sounded like the one's he did on track 3 and 7 of TWILIGHT OF THE IDOLS,the guitars by INFERNUS were the best that i've ever heard they were much faster,Frost did a great job on the drums for this album they sounded different from the drumming he does in 1349 and SATYRICON.I think the best song on this album would either be "God Seed" or "Prosperity And Beauty".

      Album Description

Gloriæ Dei Cantores celebrates the exuberance and touching humanity of this great Welsh composer. This recording of Mathias's sacred choral music includes several recorded premieres as well as his last sacred choral work, Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.

The recording also includes Missa Brevis, Rex Gloriæ (four a cappella motets), The Lord is My Shepherd (Psalm 23) sung in Welsh by the men's choir, and Veni Sancte Spiritus (commissioned for the Three Choirs Festival in 1985), among other works.

This release from Gloriæ Dei Cantores was recorded in Methuen Memorial Music Hall (Methuen, Massachusetts) with its grand acoustic and superb organ.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding demonstration of choral and musical artistry.......2005-05-10

This collection of some of the sacred choral music written by William Mathias is beautifully sung and extremely well-recorded.

The programme is well-balanced and includes some of Mathias's more virtuosic works for choir, which demand and receive articulate, well-tuned and dynamic performances from the Gloriae Dei Cantores and their director Elizabeth Patterson. Most of the works have received few performances, to my knowledge, and even fewer recordings.

The performers are well-known as exponents of Gregorian chant, but their commitment to and belief in all styles of choral music clearly shines through in these rivetting performances.

The works cover a broad span of Mathias's all-too-quickly-ended life from 1973 to 1992 (the year of his death) and demonstrate both the eclecticism, humour and consistency of his voice as a composer. For those unfamiliar with his works, this is an ideal introduction. For those who already know his work well, like myself, this is a wonderful addition of rareties and a fitting memorial to a composer who is under-represented in the catalogues.

I would give it 10 stars if I could **********

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent sound.......2001-12-13

I was surprised by the good sound quality as I own well over a dozen CDs by this band and am more impressed by the compositions and performance than the sound. The prior posts are accurate in that this is not your typical Le Orme release, but most worthwhile. This release does not sound as flat as other CDs released by Phillips. (...)

4 out of 5 stars Quite a different Le Orme.......2001-08-30

This, is their debut album from 1969, although they released a few singles before then (since 1967). Ad Gloriam was actually the first Le Orme album I've heard, which is basically psychedelic pop, but well done for the most part, although there are two cuts I can live without, "Mita Mita" and "Fiori Di Giglio". That last one features some pretty wretched strings and horns near the end. Of course, don't buy Ad Gloriam expecting another Uomo di Pezza, Felona e Sorona, or Contrappunti. At this early point in their career, they were a five piece. Toni Pagliuca, Michi dei Rossi, and Aldo Tagliapietra are all here, as well as Nino Smeraldi and Claudio Galieti. You won't find any music here that remotely resembles the classic prog they did in 1971-1974. But there's one thing that this album and a later one like Felona E Sorona has in common is the unmistakable voice of Aldo Tagiapietra. In fact if you heard Ad Gloriam, then Felona, you'd think Aldo fronted completely different bands although most of the band was intact, except for Smeraldi and Galieta (who left by the time the band signed for Philips in '71), for Felona. The music here really suffers from a lack of maturity, and in fact that's what leads to the charm to it. It sounds cheesy at times, but most of it doesn't really bother me. If you're new to Le Orme, start with Felona E Sorona first, then their other classics from 1971-1974 before this one.

5 out of 5 stars Italian Pyschedelica At Its Best.......2000-08-23

This recording will take you back to the magical summer of incense and peppermints in no time at all. The early version of Le Orme -- five members, instead of three -- present the sweet sounds of the "Summer of Love" -- Italian Style. This version of Le Orme reminds me more of Traffic instead of ELP.

Le Orme are masters at using their instruments and vocals to absolute perfection. Just listen to the second track of this CD, "Ad Gloriam," where Le Orme uses instruments and background vocals to deliver a sweet, relaxing musical piece.

This CD is excellent. The music is fantastic and the sound quality is terrific. This CD is a must, even if you do not understand Italian. Once you listen to this CD, you will get hooked on Le Orme music.

      I definitely recommend this CD.

      5 out of 5 stars Stop Reading...Start Buying...........2000-04-24

This is one of the finest undiscovered gems of foreign psychedelia that has been unleashed on the world in today's modern re-release frenzy.

And thank whatever god you usually thank for this...

'Ad Glorium' is probably the prettiest, lightest, and most alluring album of the 60's to ever be dug up. It is an album where everything is designed to make you RELAX and lay back and think about nothing except how wonderful a world it is where music like this exists...

Most of the music comes off like instrumentals, even with vocals. The vocals, since they are in Italian, act like vocals should act...another instrument...and these fellows know how to use their instruments with style, grace and strength.

Words fail at describing what a great recording this is. If you're a fan of Mutantes, Italian soundtracks (Beat et Cinecitta) or excessively beautiful psychedelia, you must buy this. And then be sure to lavish me with praise for the wit and insight of my reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Psichedelia delle Orme.......1999-11-22

4 out of 5 stars Terrific budget compilation.......2003-01-08

Excellent budget compilation featuring familiar and unfamiliar material from two well-known twentieth-century composers. Why Virgin Classics paired the tonal, traditional Britten with the more atonal, avant-garde Messiaen is beyond me. Still, the five-voice arrangement of Britten's "Hymn to St. Cecilia" on Disc 1 and Messiaen's "Trois petites liturges de la Presence divine" on Disc 2 more than justify the modest price.

I'm knocking off one star, however, for the unbelievably skimpy liner notes and the impenetrable packaging, two faults common in the "Virgin Classics" line.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Britten.......2000-04-26

The Finzi Singers really are proving themselves to be great interpreters of Britten's distinctive choral music, of which there is a staggering range in various styles.

On this disc, they sing for you some of his choral hymns along with sacred and secular cantatas including the famous "Rejoice in the Lamb." In this work in particular, the agility of Andrew Lumsden's organ playing, combined with the unique sound of the Finzi Singers' mixed top lines and robust but not intrusive lower voices, serves as a prime example of what wonders they can do with Britten's music. I like this disc a lot, and I must say that of the three volumes in the Britten Choral Edition, it is the best by far. Try it- I certainly found it most enjoyable.
