Cuba, Puerto Rico, and New York gave us the rumba, bomba, plena, and salsa, but the rhythms of the merengue and bachata from the Dominican Republic are the fastest-growing musical genres from the Caribbean. This CD is a snappy introduction to that island's national beats. The merengue originated in its neighbor country Haiti in the late 19th century, and was developed in the towns of Cibao and Santo Domingo. It's marked by lighting-fast beats, zesty accordion and saxophone riffs, and infectious accents by percussion instruments like the guiro and maracas. This CD includes the "Perico Ripiao" merengue heard on "Que Pena" by Samuelito Almonte y Su Conjunto, some big-city techno-rengue sounds on Antony Santos's saucy "Coheli Ahi," and some New York-style rap-a-rengue on Blas Duran's hip-hop/house track "Crei." The bachata, which grew out of the Spanish bolero genre, is a slower, more syncopated sister to the merengue, with its high-tuned, central African guitar strains. It too comes in many moods and grooves, from the distinctive nasal vocals of Luis Segura's (the legendary Papa de la Bachata) "Los Celos" to the amorous love tones of Nelson Roig's "El Dueño de la Noche." This collection is a good sonic snapshot of this island's musical treasures. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Merengue--in all its hip-swiveling glory--is the focus of this edition of the Rough Guide series, an eclectic experiment dedicated to schooling the uninformed (read: Anglos) on globe-trotting cultures and sounds. It's an expectedly festive mix, from the opening strains of Cana Brava's galloping "Eres Mentirosa" through Milly Quezada's throaty, often thrilling, reading of "Caro" and on to Los Tupamaros' "La Negra Quiere Bailar," a sterling salsa/merengue hybrid. The pace falters a bit with Victor Roque y La Gran Manzana's "Ven Junto a Mi," but it's due more to poor sound quality than anything else. Oro Solido's frenetic "Verano Solido" is a rousing party-starter, and Los Ocho de Colombia offers "El Mamboleo," a modern, soul-infused take on the genre. The collection's glaring lack of female performers, however, is surprising. Aside from Quezada, women are relegated to backing vocals. Olga Tanon, Miriam Cruz and Las Chicas Del Can would likely have something to say about that. --Joey GuerraAlbum Description

"I hate world music," wrote David Byrne, who went on to explain that he disliked a vague marketing label that ghettoized the majority of the world's music. The Rough Guiders who compiled this insanely far-flung anthology, conversely, apparently adore the term's catchall nature. Which is why you'll find everything from Colombian salsa fireball Joe Arroyo to the Gaelic "mouth music" of Scot singer Talitha MacKenzie here and a whole lot more. World music usually signifies roots less than fusion, which is why Mali singer Oumou Sangare's electrified traditionalism sounds just fine beside the avant-psychedelic guitar of Henry Kaiser and Malagasy singer Roger Georges. A certain disproportion is probably inevitable. Africa, with its incomparable dance rhythms, weighs in heavy with contributions by Youssou N'Dour (Senegal), Zaiko Langa Langa (Zaire), and Cecile Kayirebwa (Rwanda), while Asia is represented only by Guo Yue and Joji Hirota's flute duo. Irish folk, Louisiana zydeco, and Nubian blues are also represented here. But anyone interested in learning more about these artists will have to refer back to The Rough Guide to World Music for more information. --Richard Gehr

This Rough Guide presents two essential beats from the Dominican Republic, merengue and bachata. With its driving 2/4 beat, merengue's sexy rhythms, the heart beat of the Dominican Republic's streets, encourages hips to swing in every dance hall in the Latin Caribbean and its popularity has spread to the USA and South America. From the north of the island's countryside comes, the largely undiscovered, bachata. This soulful music of the poor and lovers, with its guitar riffs reminiscent of Central Africa and emotional male vocals, is a Latin secret worth uncovering. This long awaited Rough Guide brings together the greats of merengue and bachata with talented new artists, to supply a pulsating collection introducing a piece of the Dominican Republic to dance floors around the world.Customer Reviews:
