4 out of 5 stars Good Traditional Japanese music.......2007-07-14

This is one of my favorite Japanese albums. If you're into traditional Japanese music this is a CD that you should have. I lost the one that I originally had and I finally bought another one. I couldn't beat the price and I think that this album is great. This is a must have CD if you're into this kind of music or just enjoy a broad spectrum of music.

4 out of 5 stars Super-relaxing.......2007-03-05

A very good introduction to koto music and a lot less cheesy than the concept would suggest. The first track is by far the best.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Japanese Music Album's I've found.......2006-11-04

Beautiful selection of Japanese music. Very calming and soothing music. Mainly slow, but does include some quicker pieces of music. Great variety of instruments used such as flute, violin and harpsichord. CD also includes recipe for a Japanese dinner. Great background music for a dinner party. If you like the Soundtrack to Memoirs of a Geisha, you'll enjoy this.

2 out of 5 stars Softener for the ears..........2006-08-26

I am not satisfied with this version of traditional Japanese music at all. In my opinion traditional Japanese music is much more impressive and intense when played on original Japanese instruments. The best example is "Sakura, sakura", one of the most famous Japanese songs. When it is played on Koto and Shakuhachi (Japanese flute) instead of transverse flute it has a different feel and much better quality of expression.

The whole CD is like a softener for an audience which might not be used to a non western sound. At the same time it will get a wrong idea about what Japanese music is and will miss its real quality.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Relaxing!.......2005-07-29

A gentle sample of fine, traditional Japanese music at its best. Highly recommended for the novice - "1st timer" - as well as those of more cultured taste. Hauntingly beautiful.

being a lover of good music i was surprised to see this cd. i listened to some of the selections and decided this was an excellent piece for my parents. being of japanese descent i am always looking for music from japan to enhance my cultural appreciation. my parents truly love this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Beautyful relaxing CD.......2006-03-16

I used this cd while massaging patients in a local hospital. Everyone just loved it.I bought extra for family. Just Great!

4 out of 5 stars The Enchanted Forest: Melodies of Japan.......2005-10-22

I would not rate this the very best James Galway CD but it does contain the best song I have heard him play. Cut #3, Nakasendo (The Old Road) is worth the price of the CD alone. While Hietsuki Bushi (Love Song) and Song of the Deep Forest are also excellent, I never tire of listening to The Old Road. Hiro Fujikake on synthesizers combined with the flute of James Galway makes this a very pleasing collection of music.

3 out of 5 stars a posie placed on a political border.......2002-05-19

I don't DISLIKE this cd, but really it is a poor interpretation of Japanese flute music. It sounds more like an uninspired Enya clone than traditional Japanese music. No matter how many times I listened to it, it never could really interest me enough to be more of my life than another cd in my scrapped CD's pile.

4 out of 5 stars Neo Traditional.......2007-01-10

I doubt the kids in Japan are listening to this, but it's great for a dinner party or a different spin on traditional Japanese music with a splash of modernism.

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing, beautiful renditions of classic Japanese sound.......2003-01-21

Yo-Yo Ma's beautiful sweeping cello work with traditional Japanese intruments and percussion in the background.

This may be simpler work than most Ma fans are looking for, but I believe the simplicity is part of what makes this cd perfect background dinner or mood music.

I still can't get over how sad Sakura sounds to my western ears. It's a really beautiful cd to own.

4 out of 5 stars Yo-Yo's Early Crossover.......2001-06-21

Recently, Yo-Yo Ma has received massive critical and popular acclaim for his numerous projects combining classical music and a variety of folk and indigenous music - from the hills of Appalachia to the Silk Road of Asia. But before the success of his collaborations with Tan Dun, Edgar Meyer, Mark O'Connor and others in the late 90s, Yo-Yo Ma made "Japanese Melodies" in 1984 with harpsichordist Patricia Zander and Pro Musica Nipponia, under the direction of conductor and arranger Michio Mamiya. This CD features ten selections of traditional Japanese compositions arranged for Ma's cello and orchestra. Overall, the music is quite enjoyable - as a personal aside I have made it my official dinner music when I get sushi carry-out. My reason for withholding a fifth star is this is certainly not the greatest music Ma has committed to disc, and the CD itself features no liner notes whatsoever. Considering how much Ma has had to say about his Silk Road Project lately, it would have been interesting to read his thoughts on the music of different cultures in 1984 at the time of this recording. Alas, "Japanese Melodies" is highly recommended as is.

5 out of 5 stars simply the best.......2004-05-01

the most expensive CD i bought (SGD 26!) but certainly the best! paganini's caprice number 10 is the perfect example of yo-yo's magic with the strings. haydn's concerto was cleanly done with the tones so crisp.i have fallen in love with yo-yo ma's music because of this CD.

4 out of 5 stars classic Yo-Yo.......2002-05-24

This disc is sort of Yo-Yo's virtuoso collection. The CD is comprised largely of fairly mindless music, but at least Ma manages to make things interesting. Most of these works are played extremely well - his cello arrangement of the Dvorak-Kriesler "Songs my mother taught me" is stunning, and if the octaves (and a bit of other passagework) in the Paganani 24th caprice are out of tune, that track still serves as a tribute to his incredible technical skill. Still, some of this music (such as "The Swan") is too overplayed to be truly enjoyable at this point, and now that he has two separate sets of complete Bach Suites released (neither of which I'd recommend), the last thing anyone needs to hear is an early recording of the Bourrees from Suite 3.
The highlight is his Haydn D major concerto, which is given a simple treatment here, and it works. So crisp and clean is his playing that little else is required, from him or the orchestra, and the result is an incredibly refined performance.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music, great artist!.......2002-02-06

This CD is super. I have heard it dozens of times; it is still relaxing, fresh, and stunning.

Buy it, love it.

5 out of 5 stars Classical Listener.......2002-01-05

This music is a perfect match of excellent recording quality and an incredible performer. The CD has some of Ma's most interesting and revered performances. If you are unsure about this recording I insist you buy it, whether you are a cellist or a classical listener. It is needed in your classical collection.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......1999-09-18

Yo-Yo Ma is simply captivating. There are no words to describe the power he is able to put over a listener. He is not of this world, and his music takes the breath away. There is not one "Ma note" that is lacking in skill, emotion, or personal interpretation.

4 out of 5 stars Satisfactory, though not great........2007-04-07

The previous reviewer complains about Williams' lack of expressiveness, though acknowledging the artist's accurate playing. Well, I kind of feel that way about Williams in general. His skill highlights accuracy, in my opinion. Where I like Williams most is on the couple of CD's on which he and Julian Bream play together. Never-the-less, the cd under review has its merits and I enjoy some its pieces.

4 out of 5 stars My song-by-song review of the master guitarist John Williams.......2005-07-08

      1. Sevilla (Sevillanas)
--This popular guitar piece is usually played slow and without a strong direct rhythm, such as Williams plays here. While Segovia was responsible for taking the quite mediocre flamenco song and making it more expressive as a classical guitar piece, Williams improved on all those extra notes Segovia put in, by restoring the original dance rhythym (sevilla means dance).

      2. Prelude to the Fourth Lute Suite.
--This piece is extremely complex, full of notes and usually satisfies the average listener because it doesn't repeat phrases as much as the other songs in this set. Beginning classical guitarists will hear this and immediately go get the sheet music or tablature for it to start learning it. They are doomed too. The piece is far too advanced. Williams' version here is popular because of how utterly note-for-note flawless it is, in spite of being so complex and difficult that Segovia even said it was impossible to play on guitar!

      3. Andante
--I think Amazon.com has mistitled this piece. It is the exact same song as "Sonata in D minor" on the regular CD. But anyway, again, Williams plays flawlessly a difficult piece, but this one is more mellow than the Prelude.

      4. I. Allegro Giusto
      5. II. Largo
      6. III. Allegro
--I personally thought these three movements sounded slightly "rushed", especially the slower second movement "Largo".

      7. Sakura Variations
--Williams plays this traditional popular Japanese song several times, each being a different style of the same tune. Nice way to keep things interesting.

      8. Usher Waltz, Op.29 (After Edgar Allan Poe)
--This song appears to be nothing but "smart noise", as I like to say. It requires technical feats of skill, but it seems to just spin it's wheels, and would do little more than draw comical smiles if played at a restaurant or club for an audience.

      9. Asturias (Leyenda)
--This is a popular piece that just says "spanish pride" all over it. Those who never heard it before would swear this is a soundtrack to a film about wars in old Mexico. While this version is tight, Williams recorded this song back in the 80's on an album called "Spanish Guitar Music", and this earlier version I feel has more power and gusto, while the version on this Seville Concert Album doesn't quite have that earliers gustoin spite of it's own praiseworthy traits.

      10. Sueno En La Floresta
--I am a true dedicated fan of John Williams, and I don't like seeing people say he doesn't play with soul, etc. However, while this advanced virtuosic tremelo piece composed by Barrios is technically perfect, it sounds "rushed"; and those small pauses and breaks that give a piece "soul" are all but absent here. He should have slowed it down just a bit. Did Williams ever play this piece with soul? Yes. In 1978, found on his album "John Williams plays barrios".

      11. Adagio
--Otherwise titled "Concerto de Arajaunez", guitar + symphony piece composed by Joquin Rodrigo, and intended to highlight the guitar, by giving it most of the limelight. This is very different from the orchestra concertos in songs 4, 5 and 6 on this same album. Williams gives the guitar true color and expression in each of the solo spots.

      12. Torre Bermeja
--Some songs just have a very thick authentic "Mexican" sound to them more so than others, and this would be such one. It was Segovia who popularized the notion that no classical guitarist should play one song the same way all the time. I personally feel that the earlier version Williams recorded back in 1958 when he was 17, despite the lessor quality clarity in the recording, is much more expressive. That was when Williams was fresh out of Segovia school.

      13. Granada
--A soft and moving Spanish piece, the one you'd want to have playing when your girlfriend walks in the door to eat the gourmet dinner with you under soft lights. This is the stuff I listen to when everybody is out of the house and I can just sit back with nothing but this album and a six-pack of beer and just *V E G* for a precious 3 minutes. Or I'll put the CD player on repeat and turn it into an hour.

      14. Cadiz
--A rather lively swashbuckling piece that didn't do a damn thing for me personally. I am a classical guitarist, and this one will never be in my repetoire.

      15. Cordoba
--A very expressive piece with a slow beautiful yet haunting beginning, evoking images of the Mosk in Spain. The main body of the song requires some of the most impossible guitar fingering, and yet Williams brings it out without buzzing strings or squeaks. In the video "The Seville Concert", Williams introduces this piece by saying that Cordoba is his personal favorite.

      --

Overall, while the extra songs on this special edition CD are interesting, they are not sufficient to justify the extra price, and IMO it is only Cordoba which justifies the increased price. The average person, whether amatuer guitarist or not should be satisfied with what amounts to a culmination of Williams' unbelievably accurate playing. This album however will not satisfy guitar enthusiasts who prioritize feeling and soul more than technical perfection. He simply just doesn't "take his time" often enough for that crowd of listeners.

If I had produced this album, I would have shelved "Cadiz", and put William's latest recording of "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" on it instead; the famous tremelo piece by Tarrega which is the "most" Spanish sounding piece in all the guitar literature in guitarist majority opinion. Cadiz is simply awful. I never thought any noise could be worse than "Usher Waltz". Boy was i wrong!

      5 out of 5 stars Virtuoso Guitar.......2000-07-26

This is an excellent guitar collection; in fact, it is an excellent classical anthology, guitar or otherwise. Angel Romero and his son, Lito (heard on tracks five through seven), represent the second and third generations of a family of guitar virtuosi.

A number of the selections are more commonly heard performed by piano; however, in the hands of a guitarist of the calibre of Angel Romero, what can be done on the piano can be done with at least equal efficacy on the guitar. The only non-Western piece is the variations on Sakura, which should be particularly pleasant listening experience for those not previously familiar with it.

If one is building a classical music library, this is a recording that one should want to include.

4 out of 5 stars "A Touch of Class" pretty much hits the nail on the head.......2000-02-08

Angel Romero is one of three classical guitar-playing brothers, one of the others being Pepe (who is also excellent). I purchased this CD solely to get the hauntingly beautiful "Cavatina" from the movie "Deer Hunter." I've been very happy with this recording - the Cavatina is lovely, there are some "classical guitar standards," and some other pleasant surprises. I like the Variations on "Greensleeves," and variations on a Japanese folk song, "Sakura." The sound quality is typical Telarc, which I generally find to be top-notch.

Aficionados of classical guitar music will especially enjoy this CD, in my opinion, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants some lovely, tranquil music to either listen to or to use as unobtrusive background music.

5 out of 5 stars Great find for fans of experimental ambient music.......2007-05-22

Still, seven years after its original release, "Sakura" (the Japanese word for ornamental cherry trees) by Susumu Yokota continues to sound fresh. The Japanese experimental ambient composer and house DJ presents us with a very mellow album that can be great company for quiet moments such as bedtime as well when you are reading or writing.

After being introduced to his work first through the soundtrack of the movie Babel (where the track "Gekkoh" from this album is featured), I felt compelled to look into his work and "Sakura" has proved to be a very nice find that I keep looping through effortlessly. Totally worth checking out for fans of low key electronic/ambient music.

      5 out of 5 stars understated beauty.......2006-06-19

for those of you who are in need of verse-chorus-verse music, look elsewhere. but for those of us who are just amazed at the potential of loop-based, mood-enhancing, possibility-expanding music-making, look no further. awesome all around (as susumu yokota usually is). 'nuff said

      1 out of 5 stars be careful!.......2005-03-01

I am a long time Amazon user and after listening to this album I was motivated to write my first ever review.

I bought this cd after listening to the amazon samples. The first 30 seconds of every song sounded fantastic and still do! What you don't know is that you will be hearing that first catchy loop throughout the entirety of each song.

This is worst than boring! Its downright annoying!

5 out of 5 stars want to get away?.......2005-01-07

just put this cd in your discman and put some headphones on...and you'll escape to a paradise you have never known before. maybe, the most beautiful pieces of music i've ever heard, it just captures you...beautiful looping ambient melodies over one another just create such a gorgeous atmosphere. elements of jazz, techno, ethno that mix seamlessly together from the first track to the last. perfect use of percussion where it's necessary but not taking away from the track as you often find with ambient records. if you like four tet, or mum, or anything that has a beautiful ambient background, you have to get this album. i have it playing right now and i just can't stop it. do yourself a favor.
