When he was growing up, Andrea Bocelli recalls finding inspiration in a favorite recording of sacred music performed by tenor legend Franco Corelli. Bocelli--who in the meantime has come to inspire millions of fiercely loyal fans himself--returns to the genre as the guiding theme of Sacred Arias, the release of which coincides with the first English-language biography of the singer. These performances are filled with the singer's phenomenally well-known vocal signature: his flair for long, sweetly floating high notes and the gentle sense of cadence he brings to a melody. It's a mistake to compartmentalize Bocelli into a singer of "operatic" versus "popular" styles: in truth his approach is at heart the same. Lack of color and control in his phrasing remains a drawback, but the emotional empathy Bocelli evokes is never in doubt. The arias collected here sample some of the most famous devotional pieces: Schubert's "Ave Maria" and Mozart's transporting "Ave Verum," as well as an arrangement of "Silent Night" in which Bocelli tries out his English. There's also a decidedly odd choice of bedfellows for a program of "sacred" music, such as a song from Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder (whose "angel" is the object of an overpoweringly erotic attraction) and Handel's figurative ode to a tree, "Ombra mai fu." Still, Bocelli sings with an unfeigned directness that is sure to expand his already enormous following even further. --Thomas May

Beautiful music.......2007-01-12

This is my second copy of this CD, I burned the first one out!!
Andrea Bocelli has a very gorgeous voice that is a gift from above. His voice is not affected or braggadoccio but naturally magnificent. I could and do start my day listening to this spiritually uplifting CD almost everyday. It is a wonderful way to get off to a pleasant peaceful start, but also a nice way to come home in the evening if you have a CD player in your car. I highly recommend it to all.

An "experience" of sacred arias more than "listening" of sacred arias.......2006-04-28

I bought this CD's special edition with DVD, and I am impressed by bocelli's singing in this album. I have heard many voices singing sacred songs, and christmas songs, but very few singers can achieve the "sacred atmosphere" that bocelli devotes when he sings. He may not have a "strong" voice as opera singers, but I think singing these sacred songs, devoting the "sacred atmosphere" to the audience is much more important, the voice actually is just a tool that helps a singer to achieve the result. For real, I have heard some CD by some chorus that perform sacred arias, but they did not move me as much as this CD does, mostly not even close. Personally I like "O come all ye faithful", "silent night", all "ave maria"'s, "domine deus", "cujus animam" the most. When I listen Bocelli's singing I focus on what he tries to devote in singing more than his voice color, because in terms of voice color he surely cant be compared with pavarotti or domingo, so why compares? The way of listening him and listening real opera singers is different man. But the reason I gave only this CD four stars is that I have heard several sacred arias from this album performed by his voice teacher, the legendary tenor Franco Corelli. I tried not to compare both...but I cant, not because Bocelli sings bad, he is already excellent, just Corelli is TOO excellent that cant be described by human language (well I think even Pavarotti is not even close to Franco Corelli, but this is just my opinion). Anyway if you want to "experience" the true beauty of sacred arias, this CD is highly recommended. And this is also a very good sacred aria album for beginning listeners who want to broaden their musical taste to sacred arias.

These are just terrific. How does Andrea acheive the range he does, and the power he has, without sounding too heavy or too light? His voice sounds like the perfect voice for these perfect arias.

I have noticed one concern with the CD. I have heard several clicks scattered here and there in the songs -- but the CD is clean and I feel confident it is not the machine. Has anyone else noticed this?

Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

First and His Best.......2004-08-16

Sergio Franchi's much too short career started with a bang with this album. I have quite a few of his albums on vinyl, but didn't have this one. What I was missing, but now enjoy is Sergio singing beautiful Italian songs with fabulous phrasing, power and passion. Like most singers in his era, he was forced in later years to sing material that wasn't up to his level of talent. Not on this one, and aren't we glad it's on cd. Bravo Sergio!

A must have vocal CD.......2003-08-05

This is a must have CD for all lovers of the vocal art. For those who have only recently come to vocal music by way of Bocelli, Amante or Watson listen to this man and be amazed. Franchi sings circles around these contemporary wannabies. His vocal color, phrasing, legato and above all attention to the lyrics put him in a class by himself. This was his recorded intoduction to America, I bought it as an LP when it first came out. It was and is a vocal find. The sound is still first rate and the performance is wonderful. Now all BMG has to do is release his Broadway I Love You album LSC 2674 and we'll have the best of Sergio on CD.

great voice, beautiful singing.......1999-07-29

I grew up listening to this record and I am delighted to find it on CD. For a classical musician, Franchi's voice is a treat, as he has had classical music training, he sings in tune and with the the skill one expects from a great singer, yet he can sing pop music with the ease that it needs. He is a far better singer than Lanza and I would recommend any of his recordings that you can find.

I cannot say enough about Franchi voice. I usually do not like opera, but I believe it is just because I had not heard a voice like this. There are two fast songs (2 and 6), which are most powerful. The slower songs have a depth that I have not witnessed before. Everyone must have this CD in their collection.

Although the quality of the recording is certainly not the best, it is forgiveable, and sometimes gives it a "vintage" feel. The mandolin is what makes this recording so enjoyable. It has an Old World feeling to it.

Fabulous live recital plus bonus.......2003-04-02

The critics of Jussi Björling had a way of making everyone believe that the Swedish tenor's temper resembled the cool nature of his homeland's climate. This recital is a perfect testimony of them being mostly wrong. While in person he might have not displayed the jovial likeability of Caruso or Pavarotti, his inspired, rich-voiced singing (with slightly covered vowels) was gorgeous in all aspects.
The main body of this CD consists of never before released live recital, recorded 4/13/59 in Atlanta. This was Björling's last song recital in the United States. For the most part, it followed the programme, but the tenor also obliged to some requests from the audience, such as "Amor ti vieta" from Giordano's "Fedora" and "Che gelida manina" from Puccini's "La Boheme". My personal favorites of this recital are the songs but lesser-known Swedish composers. These songs have a great deal of dreamy beauty in them, and no one could do them a better justice than Jussi Björling. Sjöberg's "Tonerna" is a very interesting modern/romantic (for the lack of better term) art song, it's a great loss that we don't have complete recitals dedicated to this composer.
For die-hard fans, there is some bonus material recorded in 1939 (Ingemisco with orchestra from Verdi's Requiem) and 1949 (arias & duets with orchestra). I was surprised by a very pleasant lyric soprano sound of Mrs. Björling. What is striking about this inclusion is that we can observe how little has the voice changed over these 20 years. While it did become slightly more "grainy", it did not loose any of its velvety bloom. He did not have to resort to scooping and his atacca was always muscular and almost always right in the center of pitch (something for vocal students to watch for and admire). By the way, a couple of soft falsetto notes help to dispel the myth that a tenor is "cheating" when he uses this technique.
The recording quality is not all that great (the piano is booming, a few coughs, earlier recordings have plenty of hiss), but the material of this 78-min disc does justify its relatively high price. Perhaps Myto could pour some money into re-engineering some of the wonderful live recordings it has in its possession.

Wunderbar Wunderlich.......2006-04-08

Two things strike me when listening to Fritz Wunderlich. "Surely this is the most headily beautiful tenor voice ever" and "What a tragedy he died so young". Lest you be tempted to think that you will find something valedictory in this live recording of the last concert he ever gave, his last notes ever captured for posterity, let me straight away disabuse you. This is the work of a singer at the very height of his powers, with still many years ahead of him. If this concert is anything to go by, no doubt these would have been years where his interpretive skills would have been further honed, particularly in the field of Lieder.

Wunderlich was unusual, if not unique, among German tenors in that his impeccable legato remained in tact no matter what language he was singing in. Indeed his recordings of arias by Verdi and Puccini, though mostly sung in German, have an Italianate ardour and passion that would be the envy of many a native Italian tenor. Some have complained that this very ease of emission and beauty of tone act against him when he is singing lieder and his commercial recordings of the same repertoire as at this concert (recorded the previous year for DG) do lack a certain sense if involvement. There is a world of difference between those studio recordings and this concert however, Wunderlich has now thought himself into the plight of the man depicted in the Dichterliebe and here we have all the pain and suffering of a young man. Surely what Heine and Schumann intended. And of course we still have the benefit of that glorious, golden tone.

This is a treasurable memento of a historic occasion and as such should be in any serious collection of vocal music. We are left to wonder what wonders he would have achieved had he not been taken from us so young. Whom the Gods loved indeed.

Unbelievable sensitivity and musicality.......2004-11-20

Wunderlich's last concert is remarkable apart from the fact that it is his last. His Dichterliebe is much more expressive than any of his previous recordings of the work. And hats off to Hubert Giesen, his accompanist, who shows such masterful interpretive skills during the work that I can hardly pay attention to Fritz sometimes! These two artists are so in-tune with each other during this recital, and their expressivity astounds me. His encore pieces include Ungeduld and An Die Musik--both are exquisite and have something extra that none of his studio recordings could really portray. The "live recording" element of this recital launches this CD into a new realm for me...I just cannot praise it enough. If only I could have been there!
