Great CD!.......2001-01-02

This CD includes most of my favorite songs by Serge Reggiani, such as "L'Italien", "Il suffirait de presque rien", "Votre fille a 20 ans", "Sarah" et "Le petit garcon". And among the songs I didn't already know, I discovered new favorites: "Hotel des voyageurs", "Madame nostalgie" et "Le barbier de Belleville", which is actually funny. Indeed, the songs are either dramatic (sad/nostalgic) or comic (humoristic), and as Reggiani is not only a singer but also a comedian, his interpretations are always very real and moving. And his voice is very unique and powerful. This CD is a pretty good selection and the sound, digitally remastered, is great.

As the other reviewers (they have superb taste) have eloquently suggested, Sege Reggiani was a complete artist. he was an actor and inly later in life turned to singing. He also painted and wrote poetry. Paris in the 1920's served as the cardle of many would be great musicians. It was then that a young Charles Aznavourian arrived from Armenia, his parents refugees form genocide and the Soviet Revolution. Meanwhile, just as the Montanas with their young Ivo were escaping fascist Italy because of Father Montana's leftist tendencies, another leftist family was leaving Reggio Emilia in North central Italy, the Reggiani. As these families ended up in France, their children Charles, Yves and Serge would become some of the greatest singers of the 20th century (and not just in France). Regginai is the least known of the illustrious group in North America, but his songs are worth discovering and this album provide the best starting point to do just that. I find this album has many of my favorites including "L'italien".

Reggiani, the name alone evokes images of Venise or long strolls along Boulevard St. Germain and the banks of the Seine. As a student of French Literature and Cinema, I was first introduced to Serge Reggiani as I heard his rendition of "Le Pont Mirabeau" by Apollinaire in a bookstore in Brest and I was mesmerized. An actor turned singer in the middle of life's passage, Reggiani brings to life the sentiments of a middle-aged man and the tension between the old and the new. This album contains the greatest hits of the cinema legend such as "Il suffirait de presque rien" and "Venise n'est pas en Italie". What I feel stands out, however, are his sumptuous renditions of great French poets--Verlaine, Prévert, Rimbaud, and others, along with his collaborations with the immortal Léo Ferré.
This album is a must have for fans of romantic poetry, cinema, and the great voices of the sixties. Rivaling even his thespian contemporary Yves Montand and the illustrious Yves Duteil, this album is rich in sound and content; and emanates the spirit and the beauty of the golden age of French actors/vocalists.

After many years as an actor on the stage and in the movies,JACQUES CANETTI persuaded REGGIANI to record an album of songs written by BORIS VIAN.This was in the midsixties.Since then,he has alterned between movies and music.REGGIANI has been for many years an admirer of FRENCH poets like VERLAINE and APOLLINAIRE.In this collection,complete with a booklet and overview of his career you get a résumé of his output.My favorites are LE PONT MIRABEAU(also recorded by LÉO FERRÉ);he has chosen to recite the famous poem with a simple piano accompagnment and it's marvelous.My other favorites are the songs written for him by GEORGES MOUSTAKI(GASPARD,SARAH);the famous DÉSERTEUR from VIAN and also his biggest hit:IL SUFFIRAIT DE PRESQUE RIEN.The rest is less interesting,but as you know,it's always difficult to get the perfect single cd of a singer.It makes me laugh when they say ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED,because this isn't an original at all but a greatest hits package.AMAZON do your work correctly.
