There's a fairly decent variety on this CD. But there's so much more that Amazon doesn't carry - if you want a rock beat, try artists like Oif Simchas or Piamenta. There are great wedding albums by Neginah. And among the best is "What A Wedding in Overtime". Unfortunately, they're not available on Amazon - so try http://www.mostlymusic.com instead, you won't regret it when everyone at the wedding is dancing up a storm!

in the mood for celebrating.......2003-05-21

Well, I'm certainly not an expert in Jewish music, and I've just recently begun to feel any real interest in Klezmer and popular Jewish music. So if you read this review and have any prior advanced knowledge of this kind of music, I advice you to listen carefully to the samples first. I bought this CD as a sort of introduction because the price was great.And I think it is good value! All the pieces are instrumental, danceable, and they conjure a happy mood. They convey an atmosphere of summer open-air celebration that remind me of the summer festivals of my childhood in Spain. In fact, and although these songs probably originated in Central Europe, they are not so different from the popular waltzes and paso-dobles that are played at night verbenas accross Southern Europe. It is the kind of music that makes you want to dance and shout To Life!

Fortuna was born in the large Jewish community at São Paulo, Brazil, and reconnected with her religious and cultural roots during a visit to Israel. She is a devoted advocate of the Sephardic traditions that were once found in Portugal and also throughout the Iberian peninsula, before Queen Isabella enacted the Inquisition and expelled the Jews and Moors from Spain. Fortuna is a queenly and theatrical figure, dark-haired and dressed in gold-embroidered velvets. She sings in Hebrew and in Ladino, an ancient Spanish-Jewish dialect, and her mezzo-soprano vocals are as sensual and perfumed as the material she sings. The album's title is taken from a Sephardic proverb, "Oh God, give me a bit of luck and throw me deep into the sea," a precognition of the Jews' ceaseless migrations in search of peace and safety. --Christina Roden

As with many others, I stumbled on Fortuna following the inclusion of a selection of her music on a Putamuyo CD (Jewish Odyssey). Her rendition there of "Shalom Aleichem" was mesmerizing, the melody harkening back to primal roots, and it bid me to search out her work.

Given the title of this work, MAZAL, which translates as 'luck', and its inclusion of "Shalom Aleichem," I took a chance first on this album. And with absolutely no regrets, I'd recommend you do the same.

I've been a huge Fortuna's fan since the first time I listened to her music. Her voice is pure magic and the songs' arrangements take you to somewhere else - I can bet it's to heaven. Don't think twice. Give a present to your soul and buy it now.

Fortuna's "Mazal" is one of the most beautiful CD's I've ever heard. The singing is perfection and the arrangements are fabulous. If I seem to be speaking in superlatives, that's because this is a superlative album. I'm an experienced professional musician, and there is nothing that I can say that is too good for this CD. The guitar, violin and clarinet perfectly complement Fortuna's lush and deliciously sweet vocals. The songs are full of yearning and beauty, and evoke a magic that sends the listener on a journey spanning time and space: from the Middle Ages to the present, and from the mystery of Spain and the Sephardic Jews to the modern rhythms of Brazil. Buy this CD with no hesitation.
