Putting her age-deepened voice to another set of small-group versions of jazz and pop standards, Etta James makes Blue Gardenia a personal statement of mellow truth. Again in the company of pianist Cedar Walton, James inhabits "These Foolish Things," "Cry Me a River," and nearly a dozen others with her blues-drenched, hard-lived sensibility. Ever hopeful and apparently still a deep-dish romantic, James comfortably yet intently engages with the classic material--right down to her occasionally punctuating a lyric or a lick with a knowing "yeah." While most of the album has the feel of a last set in a dark club, she acquits herself well with the single left-field entry, growling her way through a samba arrangement of the '60s soul hit "Love Letters" with aplomb. Other than that, there are few surprises here. The feeling is the point, though, and it's fine. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars the slings and arrows in song.......2005-01-11

This disc gives us a mature, world-weary Etta, who sings her heart out in this fabulous jazz album, mostly about the slings and arrows of love, obsession, and in "He's Funny That Way", a recognition of one's own character failures. One of the main strengths of the CD is the choice of material, which consists of some of the best melodies and strongest lyrics ever written, and Etta wrings every ounce of soul out of them.
Outstanding are "Love Letters", "Cry Me a River", and the one that sticks with me long after the CD is over is "My Man".

This is music that will be appreciated by those who have been through the mill and come out a little bruised; those unscathed by life and love might not appreciate this recording, which may be one of Etta's finest, in the same way.
The musicians are superb, and echo the vocals in feeling. Cedar Walton on piano, Ronnie Buttacavoli on trumpet, Josh Sklair on guitar, and Red Holloway on tenor sax are stellar, as well as Tony Dumas, bass / Ralph Pendland, drums / George Bohannon, trumpet, and on "Love Letters", Rick Baptist, flugelhorn and Ron Powell on percussion.
The final track is sung by Etta's mother, Dorothy Leatherwood, and she'll bring a tear to your eye with her rendition of "Blue Gardenia".

Recorded between November of 2000 and March of 2001, the sound is terrific, and has a very intimate sound, as if one were front row and center in a small club.
The fold-out insert has a song list, recording info and liner notes: no lyrics, but one of the beauties of Etta's singing is her diction, and she makes every word understandable; there are no "misheard lyrics" on this CD.
Total playing time is 61'20.

Etta James is not dead! Perhaps you are thinking of Etta Jones?

5 out of 5 stars Rather Etta than Ella anytime..........2002-01-05

All I know about EJ is what's on this recording. I wish I had listened to her long before. But she has the right combination of tenderness and sweaty hot sexy soul and it just suits me fine. I don't think the album will ever get tired.

Favorite tracks: "In My Solitude" and "Cry Me a River" but all the rest are close behind. There is a great intimate sax solo on "...Solitude."

I don't see how I could go wrong in buying more music from the superb Etta James.

1 out of 5 stars You Can't Go Home Again.......2001-10-19

I thought this CD would contain her classic performances -- instead I learn it was recorded last year and in early 2001. Ms. James is long past her prime. Her voice now calls for orchestral support, warmth. Instead, we get Cedar Walton's notion -- rhythm section with brass dominated by fluegel horn(!). Almost unlistenable. Everything mixed at same level, no layering, no subltely. I blame Walton's arrangements -- boring, stilted, unimaginative, lazy. Poor Etta.

3 out of 5 stars "Salon" (not "Saloon") Ragtime.......2007-06-06

It's a matter of taste whether one likes ragtime in its "saloon" or "salon" form. Personally I prefer the former, because ragtime was originally performed in saloons and brothels in two of the main centers of early 20th Century popular music -- New Orleans and Sedalia, Missouri. In other words, it was popular entertainment for a popular audience. Admittedly, Scott Joplin, James Scott, and Joseph Lamb (among others) had higher aspirations --- nevertheless, the music's main appeal was the sheer, high-energy "charge" of the music. That's what I find largely missing in more classically-oriented pianists like John Murphy, who, like Joshua Rifkin and John Arpin before him, seem intent on turning the music into something appropriate for a staid Carnegie Hall audience. Not that there aren't fine rags here that occasionally capture the flavor of raw Bohemianism --- pieces like "Eubie's Lucky Day," "Raggin' Rudi," "California Porcupine Rag," and "The Serpent's Kiss" all have their moments. But even on these, the dead weight of Murphy's genteel hand takes a lot of the "dance" out of the music. The concert-hall "echo" effect contributes even more to the annoyingly sanitized quality. Paradoxically, from my point of view, the best piece on the entire set is the slow drag called "The Eternal Feminine," since it's a deliberately laid-back composition to begin with, much like the famous "Heliotrope Bouquet" of Louis Chauvin. For those, however, who want Rags to Really Dance To, I'd recommend Richard Zimmerman's Complete Joplin Rags, some of "Perfessor" Bill Edwards's solo ragtime discs, or, best of all, almost any of the piano rag discs performed by Scott Kirby or David Thomas Roberts. Best single "saloon" disc ever? Track down Roberts's compilation of "The Collected Brun Campbell." Now THERE'S real ragtime!!!"

5 out of 5 stars Bolcom - Piano Rags.......2005-09-02

Better to buy the sheet music to go along with this to realize how complicated these are to play. Murphy has that special 'bent' to play the details - there are no shortcuts in this set..

3 out of 5 stars Comprehensive collection of modern Americana.......2001-10-13

William Bolcom is undoubtedly one of America's most important living composers and musicians. Without sacrificing one iota of his stylistic integrity or musical personality, he has done much to bridge the gap between so-called serious music and the popular idioms that most people think of when the phrase "American music" is uttered: ragtime, jazz and music-hall styles. His albums of popular music from the turn of the 20th century with his wife, mezzo-soprano Joan Morris, remain classics of their kind.

John Murphy, who plays all of Bolcom's piano rags on this collection, is a personal friend of the composer and presumably has his seal of approval. It's good to have all of this enjoyable music in one place; still, I can't muster as much enthusiasm for this album as I would like. Murphy's technique, though serviceable, seems taxed by the more demanding moments in these frequently virtuosic pieces, and the resulting lack of rhythmic precision, in particular, frequently robs the music of its full effect. He also applies the pedal more liberally than I personally like. Nevertheless, the chances of anyone else recording all of Bolcom's 29 rags (including seven unpublished pieces) in the near future is remote, so this is an album fans of this composer ought to have.

4 out of 5 stars Still Raggin'.......2000-04-13

Despite the origins of ragtime being a century ago, ragtime still thrives today. It is considered a legitimate classical music form. It is even more delightful to have contemporary rags get published and performed - especially when the performance captures the nuance of the composer's intentions. William Bolcom's finely crafted rags come to life under pianist John Murphy's hands. From the delicate, thoughtful Ghost Rags to the slammin' variations in the Garden of Eden, Bolcom combines the energy of turn-of-the-century ragtime with refined classical sensibility. This CD set should be a part of any and every ragtime anthology - from casual listeners to classroom teachers.

5 out of 5 stars DEFINITIVE LECUONA RECORDINGS.......2004-09-14

5 out of 5 stars AN AUTHORITY ON LECUONA FROM ANOTHER AUTHORITY.......2001-05-14

The best review I can offer on this disc cannot be contained in my own words. I could quote from many approving and enthusiastic REAL critics from all over the world, but instead I will quote from someone who knew Maestro Lecuona all of his life. Among many handwritten letters and dedicated pictures from Lecuona to this individual, Lecuona states in one of them: “To Manolo Lamas, who has a musical spirit very few possess”. Maestro Lamas, possibly Lecuona’s best musical friend during his lifetime, (in fact-Lecuona was his godfather) INTIMATELY and EXPERTLY knows the maestro’s music. This authority has personally told me that Thomas Tirino is the BEST current living interpreter of the music of Lecuona that he knows. In fact, he says that on many occasions you cannot tell them apart. I suggest that you compare the different interpreters. I’m certain you’ll agree-and beyond that, you’ll profoundly enjoy and be dazzlingly enchanted by the pianistic talent of this wonderful concert artist. One can SENSE, above everything else, the love with which Tirino plays Lecuona’s music.

....

5 out of 5 stars Kudos for Tirino!.......2001-05-10

This 3rd volume in a series of 5 CDs by pianist Tirino is a veritable treasure, not only due to the master pianist's astounding technical proficiency, but also due to his bravura decision to include a selection of Lecuona's most famous (and demanding) pieces. Pianist Tirino has single-handedly caused an international re-birth and re-discovery of my great-uncle Ernesto's musical works. Devoting a significant number of his life to researching, compiling, transcribing, recording, and performing Lecuona's music, Thomas Tirino's execution of the composer's danzas on this CD illustrates why our family recognizes him, among all post-Lecuona interpreters, as the standard bearer of the composer's music. Tirino's musical prowess shines throughout the valses and contradanzas included in Vol. 3. To listen to this recording is to return nostalgically to those idyllic nights I spent as a youngster in Cuba, listening to my uncle Ernesto perform his pieces at either his farm outside Havana or during his frequent concerts at Havana's theaters, such as the Teatro Payret or Marti. Astounding in his affinity to capture the "zandunga" or flavor in Lecuona's arpeggios and rhythmic nuances, Tirino clearly demonstrates why I, along with the remaining members of the Lecuona family, consider him to be the most representative interpreter of this great body of work. This volume is also important because it introduces and illustrates a side of the Lecuona repertoire not generally known to pianists outside of Cuba and Spain. This CD should be considered a "must" buy for both the serious student of Lecuona music as well as the casual fan of his great repertoire.

5 out of 5 stars "The real thing" Lecuona Reincarnated.......2001-05-09

This is one of my favorite recording of ALL TIME. Torino's sound is beautiful and his playing shows great skill and total command of the style found in this music. Anyone who says it otherwise is ignorant. Torino is the real Reincarnation of Lecuona. The edit notes on his recording are transcriped from Lecuona's own recording and are welcome edition. What a contribution he has madel to future generation of artists! I am buying the rest of the CDs in the serie. Highly recommmanded!

5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......2001-05-09

Volume 3 of The Complete Piano Music (of Ernesto Lecuona) by Thomas Tirino contains some of the richest interpretations of the piano music of the great Cuban master I have ever heard. In particular, the orchestration of the Rapsodia Cubana is a work of inspiration. Through his considerable pianistic talent and scholarship, Mr. Tirino lends a sophisticated, international touch to this wonderful music that only an artist of his calibre could. The result is music that transcends ethnic and cultural borders and brings the listener into the world of pure sound.

Pianist John Arpin has a diverse résumé--everything from Scott Joplin to an album of animated movie music. But on Blue Gardenia, he explores the piano works of Hal Isbitz, the California-based composer who melds ragtime music with Latin American themes into memorable works that bridge the genre gap between New Age and classical. The title track is reminiscent of Joseph Lamb and Joplin, while other compositions ("Caterina," "The Flirt") are seemingly influenced by the romantics. Arpin plays these short pieces well and there's no denying that Isbitz is onto something with his self-proclaimed "terre verde" style. Memorable and melodic piano music. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Hypnotic and gorgeous.......2002-12-30

Heard a small bit of this on NPR, tracked down the CD and bought it. An absolutely gorgeous hunk of music, a cross between tango and Scott Joplin, although that pat description doesn't cover it. I've been playing it over and over like a junior high school kid and still love it.

By the way, if you're a pianist, you can order the music score for this CD directly from the composer, and play the music yourself (although probably never as well as Arpin does on this CD). Email the CD publisher and they'll give you the specifics.

    5 out of 5 stars Smashing! Brialliant!.......2000-05-21

This is truely the most beautiful, romantic and sensitive music that I have heard in many years. I wish that John Arpin would record some more of Hal Isbitz's wonderful compositions. This CD is a treat for the soul and I have been sharing my discovery of it with all my friends. An absolute treasure!

4 out of 5 stars Makes you want to listen over and over........2000-04-18

I heard this album reviewed on NPR some time ago and was really intrigued ... Hal Arpin's fusion Terra Verde style combines Scott Joplin's rag, the latin rhythms of Bosa Nova, and strong classical elements of Chopin. I went in the house and wrote the title down and bought it the next day. I've listened to it over and over. Would be great background music for a relaxing dinner party, but I have also listened to it with headphones and it's a treat to listen to. Hal Isbitz in my new favorite composer, and the pianist Arpin is a master.

    5 out of 5 stars Infatuating melodies.......2000-03-19

I fell in love with the partial piece played on NPR's Fresh Air and was convinced that I need to hear the whole piece, only to find out that the whole album is equally if not more infatuating than "Blue Gardenia" itself. "Meditation" is huantingly beautiful, although it would be unfair to rate any one piece higher than the others. I find the recording outstanding, the work of Hal Isbitz passionate and delightful, and John Arpin's intepretation brilliant. This album helps expand my width & depth of musical taste for Ragtime music, if not "Terre Verde" style which I am looking forward to explore more. I recommend this to anyone who looks for delight and passion in piano music.

5 out of 5 stars Evocative with a classical structure.......2000-02-22

I heard a snippit of this CD plus a review and some background of Hal Isbitz on NPR (WNYC) last week and sent for it right away. I found it so elegantly moving and lyrically beautiful. Upon further hearings, new nuances touch my ears because there is so much depth in its classical structure. I am listening more and more to contemporary classical music since it is being written more and more with the listener in mind, as opposed to being an intellectual pursuit that pleases no one but the composer. This album has knocked my socks off in its composition and Hal Arpin's interpretation. I am a librarian in a middle school and am constantly playing music of every kind both to expose and familiarize students with what exists. This piece will be a consistent must play. Any other suggestions? Let me know.

Someone had popped a quarter into the jukebox and Dinah Washington's voice started "What a difference.." A silence fell in the place as people listened. What a difference. Dinah's voice transported me to a different time. A different pace. Each phrase perfect and honest. What a difference.

Dinah has to be one of the most underrated performers of the 20th Century. Billie, Ella and Sarah continue to garner well-deserved admiration, but Dinah is often forgotten. Perhaps her choice of material was too diverse (blues, R&B, jazz, pop) to please either jazz purists or pop music fans. But her voice, phrasing and style are superb. Her voice has a vinegary edge and an emotional impact that were no doubt shaped by her difficult, reckless life but it also has warmth and soul that are wonders to hear. Genuine, moving and magnificent music.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful .......2007-03-09

One of the last singles of Malice Mizer. All Malice Mizer fans should have this single. The songs on this single are very beautiful and elegant.

5 out of 5 stars Klaha's voice is the best!.......2005-04-10

I LOVE this Cd, it's amazing, as usual with Malice Mizer! This Cd has new vocalist Klaha (who has now released two records as solo artist after the band broke apart)as lead singer, and although some may think that Gackt's voice is better, I prefer Klaha's voice, because I think he can maintain tones better than Gackt. This is an impressive record, TOTALLY WORTH THE PURCHASE, I ASSURE YOU!!!

5 out of 5 stars "My Beloved Gardenia.........".......2004-06-11

First off, Gardenia is probably my favorite Malice Mizer song. Klaha is lead vocals on this single and I absolutley love his voice...it goes as deep as the bass guitar! I also like the catchy little piano/synthesizer intro. This would be more of a 'classical' piece, but it still has that Malice Mizer touch. Its just one of those songs that you could listen to a hundred times and still wouldn't be sick of. Definitly worth buying it here since Yesasia.com doesn't have it in stock anymore.

    5 out of 5 stars Genre Defiant.......2002-04-24

Malice Mizer is an awesome visual rock group from Japan. Their music isn't quite jpop or jrock...it combines pop, rock, and classical, and it is awesome. You won't be dissappointed with Malice Mizer!

5 out of 5 stars Malice Mizer with a new feeling.......2002-02-25

Malice Mizer is a Japanese Visual band. Their music isn't exactly pop or rock. It's a mix of both plus classical. Through the music you can really feel the meaning unlike any other band I've known.
This is one single, and band, you don't want to miss out on.

4 out of 5 stars One of the last big jazz bands, with a Latin twist..........2003-01-29

Woody played clarinet and alto sax and was the leader. His 1958 "Herman's Herd" averaged 16-18 members. These selections were all recorded between Aug. lst and Dec. 26th of that year. I think I owned this on vinyl in '59 under the title "Tito Meets Woody" and I think it was on the Everest label. This CD reissue is a great deal of fun. In addition to Puente's Latin percussion and Herman's horn, Nat Adderly does some trumpeting, Charlie Byrd plays guitar a little, and Bob Brookmeyer can be heard on trombone. The other band members have less public recognition, but hey, nobody plays badly for a Herman band. The "Herd" could easily have been doing these tunes in the early 40's, in the glory days of big bands instead of the waning years. Tito brought the 50's fad of Cuban-style drumming into the mix, and the result is a total victory. You can probably get this at a good price used here in 2003, and if you like swing, jazz, percussion or big groups, this is for you. Not only does it make you feel like dancing, these sounds can lure you into thinking you actually can dance well. This is 41 minutes of joy.

    5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Friendship.......2004-08-02

Charles Davis' latest recording leads off with the song "(This is the End of) A Beautiful Friendship". That would be a shame because the pairing of the veteran saxophonist with the Cedar Walton Trio works remarkably well - this combination of musicians sounds more like a long-running road-tested quartet with a lot of hours of practice and interaction behind them. Davis' relaxed tenor takes the long way around the melody on his orginal waltz, "Texas Moon". "Bossa Joe" is exactly that - a bossa nova, driven by a simmering rhythm section with Davis' tenor work sounding like a bluesier Stan Getz. Frank Lacy's "Stranded" is a classic-sounding bop number that showcases Peter Washington's melodic walking basslines and Joe Farnsworth hard-swinging drumming.

Davis divides his sax duties between the tenor and baritone, with the first four tracks being tenor numbers and the rest being played on baritone. Davis' tenor sound is so full that it could be mistaken for his baritone. The Jobim song "Sabia" is a baritone number, but Davis makes the big horn match the light and carefree tone of the rhythm section. "Blues for Yahoo", named for the producer's dog, is a blues romp where Davis and Walton get in their best licks. The recording winds down with the title track, "Blue Gardenia", a song Davis first played with Dinah Washington. "Blue Gardenia" is a great recording and hopefully not the last by this group of musicians.

    5 out of 5 stars Great listening!.......2003-11-14

I usually don't get jazz albums, but I heard good things about this one, so I got one and I LOVE IT! Smooth and soulful, great songs, great musicians. I recommend it to anyone who thinks they don't like jazz. They will now.

5 out of 5 stars If you love Krall, Clooney and Christy then this is for you!.......2002-03-07

Libby York recalls the best of the classic great female singers from the 40's and 50's - Rosemary Clooney, June Christy, Chris Conner and Julie London. This recording is first-rate all the way working with some great jazz musicians that are on par with the likes of Bill Evans.

If you are buying the current crop of jazz sonbirds such as Diana Krall or Jane Monheit...listen to how it's really done and get this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Start with Diana Krall, Add Style and Stir.......2000-08-27

Libby York is frequently compared to Diana Krall and I can see where the comparison comes from. Their voices are similar.

But while Diana Krall is doing a wonderful job introducing new people to the wonderful great American songbook, I seldom hear her put her stamp on a tune in a way that makes me want to rush out and own her version.

What does Libby York do that Ella Fitzgerald or Frank Sinatra didn't do with these songs? Probably nothing but record them in intimate settings at the height of her vocal powers with all of the nuance of today's recording advances. What does she do that Diana Krall didn't do with these songs?

She approaches the lyrics with a sensitivity to meaning, to phrasing, that Krall simply hasn't yet matched.

    5 out of 5 stars It's a smooth, classy jazz CD.......2000-01-04

Libby York has produced a classic jazz record. These songs will stand the test of time and you will find yourself playing the CD over and over.

5 out of 5 stars evocative and velvet-voiced singer releases first CD.......1999-10-24

Libby's voice is rich and sensuous, delivering both old and new songs with delightful ingenuity. This woman is a jazz singer, par excellence, and the CD is a wonderful and inventive first offering.
