Earth Sun & Moon

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
This is a passionate musical tribute to the traditional legends of the Black Madonna in Southern Italy, by the Southern Italian Music/Theatrical group I Giullari di Piazza. This is original music composed by John La Barbara with text and vocals by Alessandra Belloni and Dario Bollini.

This album also features guest artists Glen Velez, frame drum and other percussion, and Steve Gorn, Indian bamboo flute and soprano saxophone.

This new musical collaboration features a powerful blend of traditional rhythms and instruments from various cultures including Greece, Turkey, North Africa, the Middle East, Celtic France and Spain whose influences blended with those of Southern Italy in such regions as Naples, Puglia, Sicily and Sardenia. Belloni, La Barbara and company have created an explosive cross-cultural potion that is equal parts ancient Mediterranean, and contemporary world music, whose roots go as far back as the nomadic Gypsies travels from India to North Africa, and whose sound holds the fiery energy of a Mediterranean volcano!

With her beautifully sensuous and unique vocal style, Alessandra Belloni could well be world music's next Ofra Haza or Sheila Chandra. John La Barbera's stunning compositions and phenomenal playing, as well as the entire ensemble's and guest artists' spirited performances, literally put this recording in a class by itself. Earth Sun Moon is a landmark world music recording that is a musical "Rosette Stone" of world styles, beats, melodies and traditions.

In addition to the now world famous musical contributions of both Glen Velez and Steven Gorn, I Giullari di Piazza includes a cast of top musicians including award winning world-class baritone Ivan Thomas, multiple gold-record accordionist Charlie Giordano (who appears on albums by Cyndi Lauper, Buxter Poindexter and others), historic wind instrument and harpist Christa Patton, a regular member of New York's Ensemble for Early Music (see Istanpitta!) noted flutist Susan Eberenz, bassist Scott Thornton, and violinist Abrahn Stewart. With many live performances and radio appearances scheduled, including a showcase concert at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, Earth, Sun Moon is the world music album to watch this year!

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

5 out of 5 stars Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

5 out of 5 stars JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

The 1970s were fruitful times for single-name instrumental artists. Expressing a Magellan-like inquisitiveness in their mostly electronic works, composers such as Vangelis, Kitaro, and Eloy attracted followings by leading torch-lit expeditions into fresh-sounding audio terrain while searching for more sublime emotional experiences. Deuter emerged during that period, though his subsequent involvement with Eastern philosophies reshaped his approach, leading him to construct works on a more internal, less cinematic scale. That style remains in place here in Deuter's first recording for the new millennium, and the result is a gentle charmer that may not dazzle you at first but will over time reveal simple pleasures and subtle satisfactions that make it worthwhile listening. Flutes and piano, plus occasional synths, strings and harp, are the dominant sounds at work here, and Deuter combines them in ways that capture a world as peaceful and sun-warmed as the golden detail from Van Gogh's Olive Trees used as the cover image for Sun Spirit. Overall, the music is probably too dainty for some tastes, but minor gems such as the softly pulsing "Sunlight Dancing" and the delightful title track (which recalls the David Lanz/Paul Speer hit "Behind the Waterfall") should appeal to anyone. Uplifting, yet not excessively cheerful. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars JOY Overdose.......2003-07-05

I bought this CD on a whim after hearing it mentioned in a magazine article - forgot which - as a good CD for a pleasant ambience.
'Pleasant?' Talk about understatement.
You will want to tell others about it as soon as you hear the first four or five tracks. But then when you get to track 8, there will be a door opening inside you that is marked "To Heaven". Track 9, the last track, is the best on the CD, in my opinion, and the one that removes the usefulness of the English vocabulary to try to describe it. It's the most intoxicatingly ecstasy-promoting music I've heard.
There is an NLP (neurolinguistic progrmaming) technique that involves you thinking and feeling about a highly positive emotionally charged past event, and then you create a physical anchor such as applying pressure to a finger while thinking about it. (It's good for job interviews or other anxiety producing times.) Track nine is my background music when I go through the process of creating an anchor, and it works so well!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Joy!!.......2001-09-04

I have been inspired by Deuter's music ever since I heard his album Ecstacy in the early 80's. All of his music puts me in touch with my spirit. And this one is no exception. Once again Deuter enfolds with his enchanting embrace. All nine selections are infused with the feeling tones of joy and upliftment. If this music was a wine I would have to say it is champagne -- pure sparkling golden effervescent bubbly.

Each of the nine vignettes makes me feel as if my spirit has taken a holiday to a lush and idyllic tropical island where the sun shines all day long while little billowing white clouds float along in the sky. Then at night I sense the full moon casting is silvery rays off of the calm ocean waves, shimmering and iridescent.

Apres La Pluie, track 4, is one of my favorites. Opening with the beat of tabla drums, as if waves are rhythmically lapping the shore, it sets the stage for the entrance of Deuter's recorder flutes. At first, one magical songbird starts singing while the sun's rays poke over the horizon at dawn. In a little while more birds join in with their songs. Then, as if a warm gentle breeze is rising up off of the ocean, the synthesized strings add their lush texture.

Whether you want to relax or daydream or take an inner journey, I can only give this work my highest recommendation. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

The hurricane-force Aussies reign in their primal power with a varied, gentle, and remarkably tuneful progression on what's come before. "Truganini" is the icebreaker while hardluck charmer "In the Valley" and the retro psychedelia of "Renaissance Man" are standouts. Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A decent record, but not up to Midnight Oil's best.......2007-03-16

(Actually: 3.5 stars).

Midnight Oil was one of the best bands of the 1980's with four outstanding records (10,9.8.., Red Sails in the Sunset, Diesel and Dust, Blue Sky Mining) and one of the finest live records ever made (Scream in Blue). Their star began to decline a bit in the 1990's as the band members decided to devote more time to family, political activism (including Peter Garrett's political career). Earth, Sun and Moon reflects this reduced focus, as they seemed to try to make a good record instead of a great one.

The record is well-produced, has a very 'live in studio' feel, and sounds great on long drives. The songs themselves have a steadier and slightly slower pace. Jim Moginie has added more bluesy sounds to his diverse palatte, both on guitar and organ, but Rob Hirst seems less active this time around. The frenetic energy that gave rise to Midnight Oil's improvisation and experimentation is not captured in this recording, leaving one wanting a bit more.

The songs drag on a bit too long and are missing the catchy hooks that make so many Midnight Oil songs memorable. 5 of the 11 tracks run over 5 minutes in length, and no song is under 4 minutes, which is much longer than prior Midnight Oil recordings. The choruses are often drawn out, and consequently, some of the melodies fall flat.

The lyrics are more focused on national issues in Australia, and seem to serve as the perfect platform (whether intentional or not) for Garrett's political career. The passion is very much alive, focused (perhaps too narrowly), but the band shows it still knows how to evoke emotions with its direct, defiant and poignant deliveries.

The most memorable songs on this record from my point of view are: 'Renaissance Man', 'Earth and Sun and Moon', 'Truganini', and 'Now and Never Land'. Other worthy tracks are 'In the Valley' and 'Tell me the Truth'.

'Truganini' is as good a song as the band has ever written. It has the passion, creativity and musical dexterity of the best Midnight Oil songs. 'Feeding Frenzy' and 'Renaissance Man' show a deft touch with transitions, melody and demonstrate an ability to incorporate blues into the Midnight Oil framework without missing a beat.

'Earth, Sun and Moon' and 'In the Valley' show the band emphasizing melody over power effectively.

This record will probably have some appeal to those who are not fans of their 80's records, as they sound more like a straight ahead blues/folk rock band, and the musicianship is excellent, while the vocals, though loud, are somewhat more subdued. However, when compared with prior works, one feels as if the band had stopped making music their all-consuming ambition, as the band members moved into their 30's, stopped long tours and focused more on family and on Australia.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2006-10-15

"Earth and Sun and Moon" from 1993 continues Midnight Oil's commercial success of their two previous albums, "Diesel and Dust" and "Blue Sky Mining". Though a new producer, Nick Launay, was called in to produce, it's another slightly slick produced album - which is in no way meant as a negative observation. All three albums are among my favourites and all contain great songs and great playing.

Midnight Oil succeeds in combining various musical styles like, rock, soul, funk or folk into their own easily recognizeable sound. Other strengths are their fine vocal harmonies and their unique sense of creating catchy choruses.

On this album all their virtues are there. The hit single "Truganini", the title-track and "My Country" are fine examples of Midnight Oil soul-rock with a catchy chorus.

"Bushfire" is a quiet acoustic track and another favourite.

The outstanding track, though, is the exquisite "In the Valley" - great folkish melody - extremely catchy chorus - clever lyrics - in short one of the few songs that seem to have it all.

Highly recommendable album!

4 out of 5 stars Probably the best oil cd.......2006-06-28

I have listened to this CD consistently since it came out and I haven't really gotten sick of it at all. I hope the next generation picks it up and comes to appreciate the musicianship and songwriting of one of the best 80-90s bands.

4 out of 5 stars A strong release by Midnight Oil.......2004-09-21

This CD is somewhat slower in pace from other Midnight Oil releases, but this does not detract from the quality of 'Earth and Sun and Moon'. This CD was released in the period when Midnight Oil was enjoying its success and limelight.

Four songs on this release are standouts, they are 1. Renaissance Man 2. Truganini 3. In The Valley and 4. Tell me the Truth. What really appealed to me was the style and depth that all songs had with thought-provoking lyrics. Again, a strong release from Midnight Oil that will keep being listened to frequently by myself.

4 out of 5 stars yikes...5 stars, people? really?.......2004-08-02

i mean, this is good, but not nearly perfect. granted, this band is a whole lot cooler than most people tend to believe. "oh yeah, they did that 'burning beds' song, right?" and yes, they did, but they're also australia's very own version of bruce springsteen: the band is made up of fiesty political activists who honestly put U2 to shame...because they actually DO things for the greater good. the frontman, peter garrett, all 7+ feet of him, even ran for the australian senate once. and came surprisingly close to winning. read their allmusic.com listing to get an idea of how tireless they've been on that front. anyway, their music conveys a palpable sense of the outback, of australian culture, then and now. the music is hardnosed, catchy, and distinct. they're really much better than they've gotten credit for. this album i have bad associations with, because it's what was playing in my car a couple months ago when i got in a wreck. nonetheless, it's one of their better offerings.

The disc IS remastered (it says so on the disc, plus there is a band logo design on it). The year of release was printed on the back insert, but not the year of remastering, and who knows why.

3 out of 5 stars Not Remasterd nor re-issued.......2006-04-24

This is one of my favorite bands and when i saw that Express and Earth, Sun, Moon. were available as remasterd / reissues i jumped on it. Express is. This album is not. Copyright 1987 Beggars Banquet. Now I have two copies of the same thing. I give it three stars ONLY because it is a GREAT album, none the less.

5 out of 5 stars viva nostalgia!.......2005-08-06

love and rocket's 'acoustic' album, 'earth, sun, moon' was quite a departure from densely sonic and chugging 'express.' tracks like 'kundalini express' and 'holiday on the moon' were replaced with tracks like 'waiting for the flood' and l&r's signature track, 'no new tale to tell.' the album is wrought with emotive acoustic arrangements, accentuated by daniel ash's and david j's dichotomous vocals. david j had the more deadpan delivery while daniel ash had the more melodic voice and more range. that, however, made the band that much better.

'earth, sun, moon' was arguably l&r's artistic peak, demonstrating a range previous unseen in earlier albums. it walks the fine line between artistic credibility and commecial success. 'no new tale to tell' proved to be a massive college hit, and understandably so. the 'wooo wooo WOOO wooo' intro is a definite ear-catcher and strangely appropriate intro. 'no new tale to tell's' outro is one of the finer outros your likely to hear, especially with daniel ash's trademark guitar burning up the background: 'when your up, it's a long way down, when you're down, it's a long way up. it's all the same thing, no new tale to tell.' existentialism, for some reason, always sounds better in a catchy melody.

a few of 'express'' crumbs landed on 'earth, sun, moon's' table. the album's first two tracks, 'mirror people' and 'youth' are awash in the same fuzzy, psychedelic sonics that made 'express' such a standout album. based on these two tracks, the listener might think he or she is on her way to 'express' part ii. however, 'welcome tomorrow' dispells any notion that this is another 'express.' the following tracks, 'no new tale to tell,' 'here on earth,' 'waiting for the flood,' and 'rainbird' (the exception being the rawkish 'lazy'), and 'everybody wants to go to heaven' see l&r leaning towards more pastoral/spiritual plains, and asking questions about life, religion, god, family, etc. and it succeeds fabulously.

'earth, sun, moon' saw the band pull the reigns in on their trademark sound without abandoning their identity, all the while expanding their pallet and creating their definitive album.

4 out of 5 stars I Would Take This One to My Grave.......2005-04-02

I have had this CD through many phases of my life, and the music has been a soothing soundtrack through both the thick and the thin. There was a time when I was really down and out financially a few years ago and I had to sell just about every CD I owned, but I did not give this one up. So, in my opinion it is one of the best that I own. As many people have said in their reviews, it is good music. It is the kind that you can't label. The lyrics have actual meaning, and the music is actually worthwhile to listen to. Yet it is nearly impossible to categorize. And honestly, I think that's a good thing.

4 out of 5 stars ANOTHER ONE OF MY '80'S FAVORITES. .......2005-01-30

This album was originally released in 1987. I remember going to the record store and purchasing the tape (Jesus Christ....do they even MAKE tapes anymore??? Im really dating myself here). I played it incessently. It was the backround music on many a road trip. It's kinda fun to play the whole album now because a whole array of images from that period flood back into my conscious. I hadnt listened to this album in years until I found all my old tapes in a closet about a year ago. WHAT A GREAT DISCOVERY. This is a great album. I cant really identify one song on here that I DONT like (which is unusual, especially with the albums that are released these days). To think that these same guys, minus Peter Murphy, were once Bauhaus. Not to say that I didnt like Bauhaus, but what a DRAMATIC change in music style. Bauhaus was an aquired taste. A great, innovative group, but not for everyone. Love and Rockets is a great group. Their music is mellow yet danceable. Most of the songs on this album are done acoustically which gives the album a unique kind of sound. Lyrically, every song is a comment on society, most of which are right on the mark. I really recommend this album, along with "Express" and "Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven" to any MUSIC fan. One must not consider themselves Goth or punk or whatever. This is just great music.

5 out of 5 stars A very attractive ballet score which deserves to be heard.......2007-01-13

The Fairy Doll is not a well known ballet nor is its musical score in a class with Tchaikovsky`s masterpieces but, nevertheless, the music is very attractive -- somewhat in the style of Adam. When I bought this CD I was so pleased with the music that I played it several times in a row before playing anything else -- it's that appealing. Don't buy this if you're looking for another Sleeping Beauty or Swan Lake, but if -- like me -- you like melodious ballet music and want to try something undeservedly overlooked, please get this delightful little gem while a few copies are still available.

I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!.......2006-10-26

There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.

5 out of 5 stars Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

5 out of 5 stars More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great place to start.......2006-03-06

This is the first Sun Ra CD I'd recommend to anyone. It covers three distinct chunks of his early Chicago output. There is not a bad cut on the whole thing.

"Visits Planet Earth" was first released on the Saturn label in 1966, but it was made up of two sessions from the 1950's. The first four cuts were salvaged from the not-yet-released-in-1966 "Sound Of Joy" session from late 1956. This would have been his second commercially distributed album, but (producer) Tom Wilson's Transition label folded. The remaining three cuts are probably from late 1957 or early 1958, and rework some of the other "Sound of Joy" material in funkier and more exotic arrangements, while introducing the through-composed "Eve" (in its best recorded version). While you will eventually want to pick up "Sound of Joy" as well, don't let the overlap dissuade you; the sound quality is sharper here, and the remainder of this CD is great.

Sun Ra recorded a massive, hi-fidelity 30-song session before leaving Chicago in late 1960. Songs from this session appeared on five different LPs. The greatest of his 1960 performances were collected on "Interstellar Low Ways," also known as "Rocket Number Nine." The music is tonally strange, wackily space-obsessed (especially on the two cuts with lyrics), exotic, yet highly melodic and accessible.

"Fate in a Pleasant Mood" is mostly from the same 1960 session and runs a close second to this album in charm factor; the album it is paired with, "When Sun Comes Out," is from a few years later, and is far more difficult for the first time Sun Ra listener.

If you enjoy VPE/ILW (and you will), I recommend "Sun Song", "Nubians of Plutonia" and "Jazz in Silhouette" as your first follow-up explorations. "Secrets of the Sun" is perhaps the best intro to his further-out early 1960's New York phase, but I think it is only available on bootleg vinyl.

4 out of 5 stars Another great Arkestral work.......2003-02-16

I have been listening to this one quite a bit lately and I'm not quite sure what to make of it. I certainly have not gotten tired of it, which is the first prerequisite for a good star rating. On the other hand, I can't think of any particular track that is noteworthy, except perhaps for the last one, Rocket Number Nine Take Off for the Planet Venus, in the lyrics of which one is surprised that a natural citizen of the planet Saturn should describe Jupiter as a star! A stellar slip, if ever there was.

It may sound like a weird thing to say, but this is great for background music, like for falling asleep to, or for driving to work to, or even better, for driving home to. The music produces a relaxed and pleasant mood, and my thoughts drift away from the music.

Sun Ra really is overdue for a major revival. It is unconscionable that such a great musical entity as the Arkestra is almost unknown to the nation that gave birth to it. Maybe now that so much of his music is available on CD, his time will come. Perhaps all it will take is for some young whippersnapper like Eminem or Brittany Spears to acknowledge Sun Ra as an influence to open the floodgates. Okay, maybe not, but this is great music that everyone ought to hear, and this CD is one of the better Arkestral works. Not THE best, I would give that accolade to Supersonic Jazz, but pretty darn good all the same.

As I have posted a number of reviews, here is what I mean by my star ratings:

* A really worthless CD
** A CD that has some good stuff, but some major defects.
*** An OK CD that will please fans of the artist in question.
**** An excellent CD that represents the best work of the artist in question and can be bought with confidence.
***** An absolute classic that is the best, or among the best, of its genre. Your collection should start here.

5 out of 5 stars Discover Sun Ra (Part Two).......2002-03-04

This is a parallel review to "Angels & Demons at Play/The Nubians of Plutonia." Both albums are a great place to start if you're discovering Sun Ra.

Sun Ra made a huge number of recordings with his Arkestra. Many of these works have floated in and out of print. His works seem to remain on the periphery; what helps them is a devoted fan base drawn from a number of camps: Thelonius Monk, Duke Ellington, Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, George Clinton, Grateful Dead, and Phish among many others.

His albums range from adventurous to downright insane. This particular album and the other one I mentioned contain a very pleasing balance of all the things that make Sun Ra so much fun: the big band, the swing, the rumba, the wild orchestrations and rhythms, the improvisations, and the overall "interplanetary funkmanship" of which George Clinton once sang.

My first Sun Ra album was actually a wild one: "Other Planes of There." I really like it, along with another adventurous title "Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy/Art Forms of Dimensions Tomorrow." There are a number of these wilder examples of free jazz in his catalogue, and there are also more conventional albums.

My recommendation is to begin with the more conventional albums, because they offer plenty of fun insanity to begin with. "Sun Ra Visits Planet Earth/Interstellar Low Ways" is a particular favorite of mine. If you can get a hold of a copy, check it out!

5 out of 5 stars no one like the Ra.......2001-12-29

sun ra is a true original. whether big band or avant-garde the ra will always turn your ear and have you playing a cut over and over to make sure you really did hear that. melody becomes percussion, percussion becomes melody. the guy was just too great. this cd is classic ra. at first it sounds orthodox. but listen close and you start to hear that slightly odd always enchanting lick that only myster.ra could conceive. you will dig it, i promise

5 out of 5 stars Stellar Jazz, Moves Progressively Forward into Global Sound.......2000-10-23

The earliest recordings here, i.e. Side 1 of "Visits", are beautiful big-band jazz in the tradition of Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, and others. Side 2 of Visits is even better - the polyrhythms move towards a pan-cultural trance effect, the music starts to transcend jazz (while retaining the best of jazz's tonal characteristics) and the whole thing flows towards natural, other-wordly beauty. The whole of "Interstellar Low Ways" retains this spirit of adventure and apllies it towards a set of memorable themes. The playing and arrangement on both of these LPs are superb.

This is an excellent place to begin investigation of Sun Ra's music, and as good a bargain as you'll find in terms of quality music on a single CD.

4 out of 5 stars Mixed results.......2004-11-17

I first heard "No New Tale to Tell" on the radio. I was driving past the beach when it came on, and it blew me away. It is still one of my favorite songs and, oddly, still reminds me of driving past a beach. Go figure.

The rest, sadly, is to some degree lower in quality. I happen to like the bluesy "Lazy," the somber "Waiting For the Flood," and, well, pretty much the whole acoustic second half of the disc. "Mirror People" has a Jesus and Mary Chain feel to it, which I consider to be a good thing. But nothing really jumps off the disc into my head like "No New Tale to Tell." So I'd say it's a good solid disc and well worth owning if you like the Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Joy Division, early REM, the Smiths, and the Jesus and Mary Chain (etc etc etc). Very much an album of its time.

5 out of 5 stars Easily the best L&R record.......2002-02-06

I bought this when it was originally released and I still listen to it today. I realized what a great record this was when on several occasions, when I was listening to it at my job the time (I worked at a Radio Shack in Akron, Ohio) I had someone ask me who it was and they wrote it down because they wanted to go buy it. I found the lyrics on this album the most personal of any L&R record. Although they went on to more comercial success with their self titled "Love and Rockets" release, I think this album stands the test of time as their strongest.

5 out of 5 stars Their Best!.......2001-10-04

While many claim that Seventh Dream Of Teenage Heaven is the best Love and Rockets album, Earth Sun and Moon is the REAL best recording by the band. This album took Love And Rockets a bit away from the meandering psychedelic-goth fest of their two previous albums and brought in a more pop, which made this work so exciting to listen to (and I HATE pop!). The acoustic guitars dominate, and the production brings them out to the forefront even stronger than on previous albums. The songwriting is additionally much better. No "New Tale To Tell" is a classic alternative guitar rock staple, while "Waiting For The Flood" is as great a ballad as "All In My Mind" from EXPRESS, but much more captivating. "Mirror People" and "Lazy" are riff-roaring guitar and bass workouts, while Daniel Ash's sax playing on many songs is beautifully imperfect and dirty. "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven" is a solemn work backed with minimal instrumentation to wonderful effect. The remaining tracks are just as excellent in quality and songcraft. While the follow up to this album spawned the big hit "So Alive" and an equally satisfying self-titled album, Love And Rockets took many years to get this energy back into their music with LIFT, but by trading in the acoustic guitars for our modern age of techno-styled Alternative rock. Most interesting is that about the same time this album came out, the Bubblemen (who's artwork is scribbled all over the liner notes), a very strange alter-ego project, invaded.

4 out of 5 stars One of Love and Rockets best.......2000-06-22

This is one of the band's best albums. While it contains the popular hit "No New Tale to Tell" (a staple of 120 Minutes early years), it also has the Beatlesque "Rain Bird", the light shuffle of "Lazy" (which brings to my mind the "Singin in the Rain" sequence of A Clockwork Orange for some strange reason), the experimental jazz of "The Telephone is Empty". "Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven" (easily the album's best number) is a catchy pop ballad which examines one's inner spiritual beliefs. "Here on Earth" covers a similar philosophical theme, but neither song preaches, allowing the listener to come to his/her own conclusions. "Mirror People" is a whirling little psychedelic pop dance number, reprised on the last track in a slow version. "waiting for the flood" has one of those catchy, sing along verses. The album flows seemlessly from moody Goth-pop, acoustic aural landscapes, to all-out rockers without sounding forced.

3 out of 5 stars So-so.......2000-03-06

"Earth Sun Moon" could not help but be a little bit of a disappointment after a great album like "Express." Love and Rockets return to the more acoustic-dominated sound of the dark and magnificent "Seventh Dream Of Teenage Heaven" (my favorite L&R album) but with less satisfying results. "Mirror People" and "No New Tale To Tell" were the obvious - well, only - choices for singles. Along with these two, I liked "Waiting For The Flood," the somber "The Light" and the soothing title cut, but the rest seems uninspired and falls a little flat. "Earth Sun Moon" is not a terrible album by any means, but it is not an especially good one, either. Still, it was much better than the subsequent self-titled effort.
