I returned this to New Castle. Box 15550. I have heard nothing. The date of the return was 15/05/07 from my Throop postoffice in Dorset. I sent it recorded delivery. Over to you. There was nothing on the return screen to explain the fault. ie faulty track. So after many attempts to get intouch I sent it to the address on the paper inside the parcel. Please help.

Awesome Collection!.......2006-07-04

As a young boy I would play my trumpet from my father's old Arban's method book. My private trumpet teacher (Mr. Bonfield) would love to play duets with me from the Merchant of Venice. One day I heard Wynoton Marsailas play a a flawless rendition of The Merchant of Venice on my local clasical radio station. It was flawless and brought back many fond memories of studiying the trumpet as a youngster with my beloved teacher. This collection contains that rendition and a wide selecton of clasical trumpet pieces. You may not recognize every song, but you will enjoy the high quality of the music and artists on this CD. Anyone looking for an introduction to quality, classical, trumpet music should buy this CD. The price also makes this an affordable must for any true trumpet fan.

This is a splendid anthology of music. Traditional Baroque and orchestral pieces up front, and a few surprises nearer the end. A splendid work. The price makes it a steal. Add it to your cart. You will not be sorry. There is technical excellence - peace in some of the songs and real energy in others.

Wonderful edition to your trumpet collection........2003-10-21

Trumpet fans should all own this album, that is if they don't already own all of the pieces on here on separate recordings (it would take a while to obtain them all). This recording features a bunch of great classical trumpeters and innovators such as Armando Ghitalla, Phil Smith, Wynton Marsalis, Mark Gould, H.L. Clarke, Ron Romm, Charles Schleuter, William Vacchiano, and more. Great performances of Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 2", the Haydn and Hummel Concertos, Wynton's excellent performance of J.B. Arban's "The Carnival Of Venice", the New England Brass Ensemble performing "Trumpet Voluntary", a very good job done by a Baroque Orchestra of the Vivaldi Concerto for Two Trumpets, "The Three Aces" played by H.L. Clarke, and Leroy Anderson's classic "A Bugler's Holiday".

Overall this is a great listen to some of the best trumpet players of all-time in this idiom. All of the pieces are impeccably played by some of the best. I didn't discover this tape in my collection until recently, and boy I'm glad I did.

Quite the CD.......2001-04-17

If I were you, I would buy this CD. It is a diverse collection of amazing performances of quintessential pieces - an important addition to any classical music fan's collection. Heck, even if you're not big on classical music (or trumpet music or brass music or music at all) you should purchase this compact disc.

And comrades, let me say that you can't call yourself a member of the human race until you've heard Wynton Marsalis' performance of JB Arban's "Variations of Carnival of Venice." It's literally perfect. Buy this today.

Awesome raucus pop-punk.......2007-07-22

The lead singer and guitar from One Man Army started this band when OMA broke up, and their first release is just as good as OMA was. Great, solid, infectious poppy punk. Definitely worth a listen.

This CD is flat out amazing! Every track on it is a winner, but be sure to check out Something New, Writing Letters, By the Throat...shoot just the whole record. Jack Dalrymple and Chicken's voices complement each other so well. I have nothing but good things to say about this cd and this band. Go see them if you get the chance, you won't be sorry (maybe temporarily deaf like me...but not sorry). Oh, and they based out of San Fransisco, not Southern California like another review on here says.

I'm certainly not a young ballerina, but this is a lovely little CD. I love ballet music anyway and this has some of my favorites. (I gave the T-shirt transfer of the young ballerina away to a friend's daughter)

Poorly Remastered.......2007-07-19

A somewhat dated sounding album from Buffy--you can tell it was from the late 1960s/early 1970s based on the arrangements and instrumentation. Still, even dated sounding, I really enjoy the album since Buffy's vocals are never dated. Some of the songs feature simple piano backing and some have more rockish elements. Her performance of Carole King's Smackwater Jack is one of my favorite Buffy performances. The real problem with the CD however is that it was really poorly remastered. I don't know if the engineer was having a bad day or something, but a number of cuts have bad feedback and distortion that was not on the original album. It almost sounds like Vanguard lost the master tape and remastered this from a used LP. Vanguard is one of the least user friendly labels these days and often issues the original CD for a few years and then a new version with bonus tracks, so that collectors have to shell out additional money. To the extent they ever get around to re-issuing this album as an expanded CD version, hopefully they will give it the proper remastering that the album deserves.

An overlooked great song.......2005-12-16

When a good song bounces around your head since the 1960's, you know it's a classic. And that's certainly true of all the famous songs on this album. But for me, "Now you've been gone for a long time" is one of Buffy's most beautiful songs ever, never mentioned in fans' favorite song lists, and one that really lets her vibrato take on a role of underscoring the emotional content of the love song. It's delicate and profound, ethereal and mysterious...and the lyrics don't rhyme. Isn't that amazing! I love it. Buy this album...buy all of her albums...and listen to them for the next hundred years.

This is the album that made me an ardent Buffy fan twenty years ago when I was in my late teens. I assumed for a long time that it was everyone's favorite, until I realized that she has more than a dozen classic albums. These days, even though I have her entire collection, including her timeless Coincidence and Up Where We Belong albums, I probably listen to Quiet Places the most. However, there is still something so magical about the Ballerina album that sets it apart from the rest of her oeuvre. Her recording of "Song of the French Partisan" is so moving and picturesque that it was honestly ten years before I realized that the recording was done with only voice and guitar. I was only six when the movie Soldier Blue came out, so I didn't run across that one until adulthood either, but the title song, featured on Ballerina is equally stirring. The initial connection with this album really came with "Sweet September Morning", which I am sure I heard on the radio as a child. For me at least, the song speaks to a joyous spirituality; literally finding Jesus, or a love of a different sort. The theme has a charming ambiguity to make it interesting and it is certainly accessible enough for airplay. In my early thirties, after a night of drinking, nothing soothed the soul more than Buffy's cover of Neil Young's "Helpless" and the haunting "Now You've Been Gone For a Long Time". This album just doesn't get old. These days, I would consider her Spanish "The Surfer" to be a favorite. Her work with Neil Young's band Crazy Horse would be incentive enough for most people to get this album, but be aware that you are in for so much more.

An album of scope and attainment.......2000-09-24

I first bought this record 25 years ago and subsequently replaced it with the c.d. Few artists could match the range and strength of what is her most complete recording. The fact that Buffy wrote about half the album and the choices she made in selecting songs to cover, make this a certain Desert Island Disc. HIGHLIGHTS:1 The stunning version of Neil Young's Helpless with it's thumping drums, lamentive lyric and authorative vocal. Buffy expresses the meaning of the song so well. 2 The Surfer, Stratospheric vocal-has to be heard to be believed. 3 Song of the French Partisan- earily melancholic. 4 Now You've Been Gone-An acoustic treat. Other delights await. One of my all-time favourite album's from an artist who truly deserves the epithet.

Buffy's Best Collection.......2000-06-24

Buffy is often forgotten among the group of female singers, like Joan Baez and Judy Collins, who sang protest songs in the 70's but Buffy is among the best. The war protest songs "Moratorium" and "Song of the French Partisan" are some of the most moving in the collection. "Soldier Blue" gives a lump in the throat when you listen. The title track "She Used to Wanna Be a Ballerina" touches everyones sense that their hopes and dreams when they were young were never met. All the tracks are a pleasure to listen to, but each listener will have a sense that one or two speak for their soul.

This band's name is misleading, as the album contains not only drums and tuba, but trumpet, whistles, sax and vibraphone-plus esoteric habiliments like spare change and duct tape-all employed to dazzling effect. And oh, don't worry, there are guitars as well. D&T run the stylistic gamut from surf rock to jazz to marching band kitsch to whatever, often within the confines of a single song. The band's various modes are unified by their precise execution and instincts regarding shifts between narcotic repetition and blistering intensity. Highly recommended.

This has to be Mancini at his best.......2004-03-01

This CD contains contains Mancini's Beaver Valley Suite. In this Suite, he "writes" of his childhood in a steel town. Anyone who grew up in a mill town will immediately identify with the images created by the music. This has to be Mancini at his best. There are six more original pieces (tracks 6 through 11) that showcase Henry Mancini's unique ability of giving joy to others while doing something that he truly enjoys. I have all of these pieces on the LP, Debut. I have been looking for them on CD for years. I am listening to the CD as I write this review. As the sleeve says, it "presents a quality of sound superior to the original vinyl album."
