    Album Description

Very, very few players have covered King Crimson repertoire and no-one of prominence (other than The Schizoid Band and Andrew Keeling's orchestral arrangements) has attempted more than one or two pieces. There have been honourable renditions & representations but, until now, without significantly adding to my understanding of Crimson material.

The CJ3 have respectfully & irreverently taken 8 Crimson classics, repositioned them in the musical spectrum, and delivered their first Songbook with superb musicianship in service to wit & invention. I have heard, as if for the first time, Schizoid, TOAPP, Catfood, Starless, Ladies Of The Road, I Talk To The Wind, Red & Matte Kudasai.

Ian Wallace provides personal hotline & Crimson-juice authority to the Trio, although anyone unfamiliar with Ian's jazz passion & experience may be surprised by what is going on here. O for a shabby & smoke-free jazz club to sit back & savour The CJ3 in living sonic colour. O for someone to persuade Ian, Jody Nardone & Tim Landers to climb into the back of a van and travel.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars interesting first listen, but do you want to hear this again?.......2006-08-09

Being a big fan of the King Crimson material chosen for this disc and of good jazz piano (Evans, Jarrett, Tyner, Charlap, Gustavsen,....), I had high hopes. Sadly, this just doesn't work for me.

Faster tempo sections lack grit or aggression, and the quieter passages frequently descend into a Hilton lounge vibe.

Do the guys have musical chops? Certainly. And drummer Ian Wallace brings Crimson bandmate experience to the plate (the drums are the highlight of this set). I would have preferred an acoustic bass instead of the "front of the mix" electric that was chosen, but ability and instrumentation are not the problem. Soul and innovation are.

Despite an ever-changing band line up (sans Fripp, the only always-present member), King Crimson was always filled with musicians who had a lot to say and the ability to say it (even if you didn't didn't necessarily enjoy every incarnation or album).

Sadly, this CD doesn't live up to its concept. Great Crimson "standards" were chosen, but (unlike a great jazz trio tackling a stanard tune and building something new and exciting) these interpretations don't go very far.

I DO recommend checking this disc out. It's interesting to hear these pieces in a different context. The question will be whether or not you would like to hear them more than once.

3 out of 5 stars Muzak for Aging Proggers.......2006-03-19

A few years ago, following the dubious success of "The Orchestral Tubular Bells" we were treated to a rapidly-descending series of lugubrious orchestrations of the music of Jethro Tull, Yes, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd (Oh, the humanity!) and several other Baby Boomer favorites. Thankfully, the trend died out as fast as it arose and elevators all over the world have gone back to "Tiny Bubbles" and "Raindrops."

Or maybe not. Is the Crimson Trio a harbinger of the next wave of bowderlization, where everything sacred is turned into Lounge Jazz this time? Can Nick the Lounge Singer, crooning "Aqualung" in airport lounges to blue-haired travelers, be far behind?

Oh the Trio is tasteful -- Landers is one hell of a bassist and Wallace is underappreciated -- but the first signs of the Apocalypse always are.

    Be afraid. Be very afraid.

4 out of 5 stars CONTEXT BEING THE THING.......2006-03-11

The equation is pretty simple: The Crimson Jazz Trio is to jazz somewhat less than King Crimson is to rock. But the real import here is a dramatic change of context, one that shifts the rhythmic and melodic components from an often clinical glare into a warm and generous new light. By allowing us to recognize these now familiar pieces in a completely new setting is a great way to demonstrate just how compelling, flexible and open-ended the music of King Crimson is. Even more interesting is the way in which the music of various generations of KC, each with its own distinct stylistic signature and aesthetic preoccupations, adapt to the here "standardized" jazz form.

More than an exercise, the first volume Songbook shows us that no matter what the form, interpretation is a critical aspect of making music. The interpretations here are uniformly worthwhile and exhibit the outcomes of what must have been some difficult decisions. Just consider untying the Gordian Knot that is "Starless", absent of Alexander's sword. Music such as this, with its strictly metered progressions built on razor-fine divisions and subtle, clockwork variations would seem impossible to adapt to the freer shadings of jazz. Yet, the Crimson Jazz trio accomplishes just that, to great effect.

Listening, however, proves to be equally demanding and rewarding, especially when compared to a spate of comparatively onanistic "mash-ups" of the original work. Anyone interested in music and its seemingly infinite pliability and potential should spend time with this Songbook.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Prog-Rock Interpretations for Jazzy but not Jazz Piano Trio.......2006-03-05

This disc is almost an instant classic, give or take a few minor reservations. Exceeded all my expectations that's for sure.

Landers & Wallace need no introduction but it is the unknown Nardone who is the revelation here. He's unfailingly tasteful in the slower and medium-tempo sections, really catching the immortal spirit of classic KC but he also tends to overplay and overstate and bang on the keyboards and take the song through some sort of climax, unnecessarily ruining his own extended state of grace, apparently thinking he has to do this just because this is the mighty King Crimson after all that they're interpreting and a bit of loudness and 'rocking out' is called for! Not so. By riding out the entire song in a perfect state of understated balance which is what cool jazz is all about and with fresh inventiveness each step of the way, he creates a masterpiece whereas whenever he bangs on the keyboards he creates only annoyance since no piano can match the power of Fripp's guitar.

That criticism aside, the great thing about Nardone is that when he's flying improv he's flying strictly with the 'beyond' feel or 'transcendent' feel of a tune, the mysterious spirit that makes it great and he's all about that 100% and where that takes him and not at all tied into a jazz idiom. In other words, if Keith Jarrett or Chick Corea or Herbie Hancock improvised on these same tunes, it would sound too jazzy and they would take a jazz approach and subordinate the feel of the tune to the jazz approach which tends towards homogeneity. Not Nardone, he takes the improv approach but leaves the jazz patterns or feel out because it would take away from the superior classic KC feel. The Jazz or be-bop derived style of playing with its established patterns of approach has been run down into the ground by hundreds of players over the years so it's great to hear a guy who likes the freedom of improvisation but likes the transcendence prog aims at at its best better than the very different type of transcendence jazz tries for. You could say that this is cool-jazz played with equal parts cool-jazz spirit & prog-rock imagination but without any be-bop dervied stuff thrown in that you hear in all standard jazz albums from Pat Metheny to Keith Jarrett.

Excellent job recording the CD as well, super-thick very nice piano sound, a killer deep electric bass that stands in for an upright and the classic Wallace drum tone.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD! Bring on Volume 2.......2006-03-03

While this is not officially King Crimson, it's definitely a must for any Crimson fan. This is even a great jazz CD for those who aren't (yet) fans of KC. I really enjoy the very melodic fretless bass guitar. I definitely hope they stay together and record a Volume 2. I'd love to hear some more arrangements from the '80s Fripp/Belew/Bruford/Levin line up as well as the '90s Double Trio.

Wow, and furthermore, wow. Rhino has a history of doing things up right, but this time it's outdone itself. More than five hours of prog, from The Nice to Golden Earring, presented thoroughly and largely chronologically. Depending on your outlook, it's either heaven or hell. There's plenty here to occupy the idle, drug-riddled mind; some well known (Focus's "Hocus Pocus," ELP's "Knife Edge," Genesis) and some wonderfully obscure (Wigwam in their pre-Virgin days, when they were an obscure, Finnish-Irish outfit, and Hatfield and the North's delicious first single, "Let's Eat Again [Real Soon]," which had nothing to do with food). Of course, it's mostly European, but that's where prog was, (as was punk, but that's another discussion altogether). You even get the Italians from outer space, PFM, and one of the few French bands to mean anything--Magma. Toss in some Roxy Music, a few Krauts, early ELO, and a whole host of others, and you have something close to paradise, or overkill. With cover art by--who else--Roger Dean, and a tab of windowpane (just kidding, really!), it's everything you could imagine a prog rock box being. Bloody glorious. --Chris Nickson

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Rhino took on an unachievable challenge...but there is a silver lining........2007-04-03

Rating systems attempt to convey a sense of value for the item being reviewed - "Is this thing (cd, book, movie, gadget, etc.) worth your time and/or money?" Well, this is the lowest-rated item I've ever reviewed, and I'll try to explain why.

Even as a sampler of European prog from the years 1967-76, "Supernatural Fairy Tales" fails on many levels. The first problem is that there are just so many different sub-genres of prog, including Canterbury, Symphonic, RIO, Space, Electronic, Progressive Pop and many more. So even if you like a certain sub-genre (say, RIO), you probably won't like a bunch of other stuff here (say, the prog/pop stuff).

Of course, we can all quibble about how representative one or two songs could be of an entire output from one band; or how this collection excluded some obvious prog giants of the era altogether (for whatever the reason) - King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Camel, National Health...all European by the way. I can't even envision a boxed set of some of my favorite prog groups, much less of an entire sub-genre (much less of the entire genre!). If we like many of these groups, we've probably already got all 6 or 7 albums they put out between 1967-76 anyway, right? Plus you lose here the whole "concept album" idea that is so frequently integral to a progressive rock album. So this whole undertaking was very formidable, if not ill-conceived.

One might indeed wonder "Why bother with this boxed set at all?" Well, if you have to pay the prices that show up here on Amazon or even on eBay, I'd say "Don't". It is not worth your time OR your money.

BUT...I'll let you in on a little secret, folks. There are some pretty pristine copies of this set floating around the public library system nationwide. If, like myself, you are able to procure a copy (relatively small fee) through the interlibrary loan desk of your local branch, THEN you may have found something of value. At the very least, the packaging is attractive (with Roger Dean art work), and it comes with a fairly nice booklet with a short description of each band, their style, and the significance of the cut chosen for this collection. You may also find that odd song that you've always sought elsewhere (e.g. "America" from The Nice); or be pleasantly surprised by a song from a band that you would have never expected (e.g. "Lothlorien" from Argent); or be able to listen to that small sample of a band about whom you have always been curious (e.g. Le Orme - good shtuff!).

In summary, unless you have a very wide appreciation for many styles of prog (and very little to show for it in your own personal catalog of music), this is not a very good value for your money. But find it for less (or borrow it for free!), and you may appreciate some things about the ambitious effort that Rhino made in producing this.

Just don't overestimate the value of nice album art work...I give this set a lowly 1-1/2 stars.

4 out of 5 stars A Treasure Box Full of Progressive Rock - Dip In! .......2006-02-26

This 5 CD set covers a lot of ground and there is something here for everyone, particularly if you are a fan of progressive rock. All the famous bands are featured, including Yes, ELP, Genesis, Focus, Gentle Giant etc. But we also have the welcome presence of Italian proggers like Banco and PFM, and other international acts. The average listener will not like everything, but there is much here to enjoy and admire. There is a well written booklet with this boxed set with entertaining articles about the prog experience. The cover is by Roger Dean. Go on...treat yourself!

3 out of 5 stars What do you expect from a compilation.......2004-08-30

Every review (mine included) talks of bands left off and ones who shouldn't be there.
This is partly because, WHAT IS PROGRESSIVE ROCK??? Define it. Hard isn't it. ELO are here with a orchestral version of Chuck Berries classic. Is it Prog? Idon't think so, although they could be considered a prog band from their early albums before they went poppy. As stated by another reviewer, some bands are left off for due to who owns the rights and thelike so we can complain, but there is nothing we can do.
In all honesty I reccommend you buy all the albums the songs are on than this set as you will only wind up getting them anyway.
Hope I've been useful... Toodle Pipskie (is that how you spell it?)

1 out of 5 stars the worst box set I have ever heard.......2004-08-23

If I could give this zero stars I would. First of all, I'm a big fan of Yes, ELP, Genesis, Gentle Giant and Roxy Music. I'm not one of these people who hates this genre. This box set is incredibly depressing; it makes me question even the music I love. For example, it's great to hear Genesis' The Musical Box, but surrounded by terrible music, it sounds overblown and pretentious. Same with Karn Evil 9 and others. It feels like it was put together by someone who secretly hates progressive rock. Just because something is obscure doesn't make it "bloody glorious" as the Amazon reviewer put it (he probably doesn't like progressive rock either). If you are a fan of interesting, complex, very musical, exciting music, don't touch this box set with a ten-foot pole - it's a huge waste of fifty bucks.

4 out of 5 stars A great Prog Rock sampler package, nonetheless..........2001-06-15

I love progressive rock. It's most plausable era was between 1968 and 1975. It continued to exist, but it lost it's charm as late 70's album rock became the norm for FM radio. Guitar rock with more simple-minded lyrics became more radio friendly. Progressive Rock took us to other worlds, other dimensions, other levels of consciousness. In other words, Prog rock was intelligent music. It was science-fiction in a form of unique music. It explored realms of fantasy, not everyday social dilemas. From my perspective, it was the keyboard-oriented rock that captured my fancy. Progressive rock artists were artists that wanted to explore other sounds and ideas that nobody may have approached before. Today's record companies probably frown on such ideas. Today's record companies are only concerned about the fast buck, not an artist pouring his (or her) heart into a unique idea for creative venturing in music. Progressive Rock ruled as music for the psyche. Supernatural Fairy Tales is a pretty good box set designed to represent the Progressive Rock era. Everyone has their own idea what some Prog Rock artist's best projects were, so, true, not every track here will satisfy everyone's idea of which track best represents the band. Just be grateful that your favorite Prog band has, at least, been represented here. And, if they were overlooked entirely, well, what can Rhino do about a sound genre that has thousands of bands world-wide. I'm remotely satisfied. There's some good stuff here. My favorite Prog bands, Emerson, Lake, & Palmer, Strawbs, Yes, The Moody Blues and the such, are here. My only grumble is that Aphrodite's Child has more adventurous music than this bleak example they selected (Babylon). But, the best thing Le Orme has ever done is here (Ritorno Al Nulla). Plus, this collection features a 13 minute instrumental from Klaus Schulze (circa 1970) totally unavailable anywhere else. If I had to recommend some Prog artists overlooked here, I would suggest, Triumvirat, Mike Oldfield, Egg, Tangerine Dream, Eloy, and also Rick Wakeman. King Crimson, Pink Floyd, and Rush, sure. But, for five CDs, what do you want? 30 second samplers from every prog artist graced by God? This box is a great sampler package. I'm pretty fond of it. I really appreciate that Rhino put this together. Nobody else would touch it (here in America, anyway). Thank you Rhino, I'm loyal to you. (Any chance for a second box set?)

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgia can take many forms - this is one I must have........2002-10-25

This wonderful, reasonably priced boxed set sampler of the reissue of the cream of the BYG/Actuel catalogue 1969-1971 is a must have purchase if you have any memories of the sixties when any man in a grey flannel suit MUST be a suspect complicit in some government policy intent on enslaving ordinary workers, bombing some faraway country or colluding in a corrupt Wall Street trade. Hence, Don Cherry adorning the cover of this release in propeller beanie, welder's goggles and leather windcheater had an impeccable image as clearly NOT a suspect. Besides, he made amazing music before the term "world music" evinced a wince from "jazz" lovers. One of his best moments was the two LP's entitled Mu Pt 1 and Mu pt 2 now reissued, where he explores a variety of moods, rhythms, melodies, influences with the great Mr Ed Blackwell. Excerpts on this release are from the second volume. Other musicians that appear on this release include some of the greatest musicians of the 20th century regardless of genre: Paul Bley, Steve Lacy, Dave Burrell,Anthony Braxton, Sonny Sharrock head the list. When we think of their respective instruments and their compositions and the contributions they have made to the music, how can they not be celebrated as such? There is nothing wasted on these three Cd's which are full to the brim with outstanding examples of the music of the time together with a comprehensive booklet.

            Amazon.com's Best of 1999

In 1998, cancer took the life of avant-garde cellist Tom Cora, a prolific, genre-crossing musician who never received his due acclaim. On Hallelujah, Anyway, we can hear some of Cora's finest moments and dozens of his musical friends performing works that celebrate the musician's life. Weird, wonderful, and ultimately moving music. --Jason Verlinde

            Amazon.com

Over the years, John Zorn's Tzadik label has released dozens of memorable jazz, new music, and experimental releases, but few are as poignant--or beautiful--as this double-CD tribute to the late cellist Tom Cora (Tzadik is donating all the profits to Cora's surviving family). Before succumbing to cancer in 1998, Cora had taken the cello to new heights for two decades, working with Eugene Chadbourne, Zorn, Skeleton Crew, the Ex, and numerous other avant-gardists. His work was challenging, adventurous, and consistently good; his ear as attuned to blues and world music as the downtown NYC jazz scene. And, as this fitting sampler of his music (and his influence on others) attests, he had an impact. The avant-garde world is a generally reserved lot, but this is one collection in which everyone--musicians and friends--put their collective guard down to celebrate Cora through music. Lesli Dalabra opens with a plaintive trumpet solo that sets a somber tone on disc 1, Umezu Kazutoki & Band perform Cora's "The Gospel of Gone" on a busy Tokyo street; Cora's own recordings and collaborations are featured, and the musical contributions of his friends (Kramer, Wayne Horvitz, the Chadbournes, and numerous others) make for stirring eulogies. Remarks from close Cora associates and, most importantly, his own brief writings sprinkle the liner notes. It's a fitting tribute and an unpredictable sampler of some of the most joyous music to ever transcend the boundaries of jazz, world, and classical music. In a word, it's gorgeous. You owe it to yourself to hear this. --Jason Verlinde

            4 out of 5 stars Overload!.......2001-06-06

Man, there is so much music, in so many styles and instrumental configurations, that after 5 or 6 months, I still haven't been able to absorb this music. There is some awesome stuff, the Curlew, SKelton Crew and Cora solo pieces come to mind and some music that isn't really my cup o tea (I'm thinking of a couple of the vocal pieces - roof).

Though I only rate this 4 stars, I still think its essential, criminally overlooked music.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome respite from a wall to wall sell.......1999-09-16

What a welcome respite from the garbage the commercial markets want me to give up my money for. A host of artists, wonderful music, variety and a source for continual rediscovery.
