The Rai Overview.......2000-08-05

This is yet another of Wagram Records' releases exploring ethnic music both in its historic and modern form. Split in 2 CDs labeled Des Racines (Roots) and A Nos Jours (At Our Days), Spirit of Rai does a good job covering the long history of Rai music. Des Racines includes music by the traditional Cheikhs as well as classics such as Ya Rayah. Roots are roots, we cannot mess with it. However, A Nos Jours could have been compiled with a better selection of songs. I have listened to Rai-oriented songs by Khaled, Cheb Mami, Cheb Hasni, and Rachid Taha, and even though there were songs by the first three, the best songs were not selected. Who am I to decide whats best? I have known Rai as being an energetic and expressive form of music with an abundance of Algerian percussion and other instruments. So strong that the tune remains in your head for a couple of hours. I must say that A Nos Jours is more on the mellow side with generic sounds of Rai instead of the ones making the most impression. I was hoping to get a compilation of songs that have made the most impression in the ethnic music community, but, on the contrary, unfortunately. 3 stars.

Margo, the reason why some of the tracks on this newly released album are mis-mastered is because these tracks were copied directly off of Khaled's way too old tracks that were recorded in his home studeo in cassettes back in Algeria in the early 80s. They are not professional, state-of-the-art productions or recordings. But back in the days they were like top notch. Remeber, studeo productions in Arab countries in the early 80s was extremely poor. However, there has been some drastic imporvements. Why Khaled to decided to re-produce his junky old tracks? We really don't know. But may be he wanted to offer his fans an idea about how rough his early days were.

Let the Buyer Beware!.......2005-11-25

This pertains to the recently released three-CD set, "Spirit of Rai." It includes some awesome "Cheb Khaled" songs - and I mean AWESOME! However, a few tracks were mis-mastered; they are either too slow or too fast, and really distort Khaled's voice. In fact, it's hard to listen to those tracks. One of them is a live cut of Ya-RAYI; it's just plain bad. Another "nightmare" track that's included - Alech Tomouni. Anyway, Khaled seems to be releasing a number of "cheaply engineered" compilations this year. This one was pressed in Portugal. Let the buyer beware.
