There's no doubt that singer Lila Downs' profile is on the rise after her appearance in the film Frida and on the accompanying soundtrack, which led to a performance at the 2003 Academy Awards. The dividing lines between cultures and classes are major themes throughout the Mexican-American singer's decade-long career; but whereas 2001's Border is more angry about the disparities, One Blood: Una Sangre is more inclusive, if only for the hopeful note of unity sounded in the English-language version of the title cut (the album has two distinctly different readings of the song sung, respectively, in English and Spanish). While much of the cumbia-based, genre-breaking material here is original, Downs and her band completely revamp two covers: Ritchie Valens classic "La Bamba" features techno beats and African drumming; the folk song "La Cucaracha" opens with wailing guitar before settling into a gentle reggae groove. Stylistically restless and lyrically didactic, One Blood: Una Sangre is as ambitious as it is beautiful. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Endless talent, humor(!), peerless voice.......2006-02-04

It does not happen very often that one can hear a forty year old classic in a new cover version, and it is as if you hear that song all new and all over again. Especially, I had always thought that Chavela Vargas' version of Paloma Negra would remain the "gold standard", but when I listened to Lila Down's version here, ohh boy was I wrong, and ohh boy was I blown away! She plays with her talent, she jiggles with her incredible musical possibilities. Where other artists put a lot of effort into a single interpretation, where you see they work hard, Lila Downs seems just like a child that opens a big box of candies and asks: "What type of magic do I feel like doing next?"

All the other songs range from the great (Cjelo Rojo, Tirineni Tsitsiki) to the curious (Mother Jones) and to the original (covers of La Cucaracha and La Bamba), but Lila's Paloma Negra shines as the jewel and showpiece of this CD. If Chavela Vargas' version was the "classic", now it seems more like the pedestrian version to me. And don't get me wrong: I still think it was in itself an incredible performance. But if you want the overdrive, listen to the Lila Downs. Her's is so full of vioce and class, it will blow your mind away! Only in a song like this can it show, where the true genius of an artist really lies.

Let's hope there will be many more showpieces for Lila's endless talent and peerless voice to come!

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Sound, Filled With Passion And Soul!.......2005-07-05

I first heard Lila Downs' sultry, smokey voice in the film "Frida." The movie's entire soundtrack is extraordinary, and I still listen to the CD frequently. Fortunately Ms. Downs has come out with four albums since then, because I love the passion and soul she puts into her music. "Una Sangre" is her latest offering. And it is an eclectic, outstanding mix, based on her multicultural artistic vision!

Lila Downs is a Mexican-American vocalist, with a Scottish-American father, and a Mixteca mother. She grew up in both the Mexican state of Oaxaca and in Minnesota, USA, bi-lingual and bi-cultural. Lila received formal voice training in Mexico and in the States, and performs her own compositions, as well as tapping into the rich indigenous music from the Mixtec, Zapotec, Maya, and Nahautl cultures. Her variegated sound is a real fusion of Mexican folk songs, rich American blues and jazz, along with some pop, mixed in with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms. I occasionally hear some gospel in there also. It is really difficult to pigeonhole her music and interpretations into a genre. This is a good thing! She is totally original.

"Viborita (Little Snake)," leads off with a fantastic driving Afro-Latino beat sustained by a fleet bass drum, with call-and-response vocals. It is very reminiscent of coastal music from Mexico, Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean - similar influences, right? The poignant "Dignificada," comes right afterward, and really gives the artist an opportunity to show-off her versatility with this slow sensual bolero. "Cielo Rojo," (Red Sky), is an excellent cut, one of my favorites - a sort of Mexican flamenco with 3 very different guitars at work here. It's gypsy-like, with soaring vocals and Lila, at times, trilling a falsetto high in the back of her throat.

"Bamba" is her take on the 200+ year-old song that Ritchie Valens made famous outside of Mexico, and her version of "La Cucaracha" is a fabulous 'cumbia', which some folks mistakenly call reggae. Reggae, which I really like, is totally different. The cumbia is a Colombian folk dance and music, which originated among African slave populations on the country's Atlantic coast. It is popular in areas of Mexico and Latin America. Extremely sensual, the music is often classified as "salsa, played in 4/4 time with a heavy beat one and accentuated beats three and four, giving a loping rolling rhythm similar to 'riding a horse.'" Anyway, this version of "Cucaracha," which usually has political lyrics, is certainly the most unusual I have heard.

"Tiringue Tsitsiki" (Flower of Marigold), is beautiful and sweet. Lila harmonizes with herself with minimal accompaniment here. While Malinche, with Downs' deep-toned voice and powerful delivery is bold, with lots of percussion - snare drums, maracas, and harp. "Paloma Negra" is traditional Mexican, with a fresh touch. "Mother Jones," performed in English, is pure blues. "One Blood," and "Brown Paper People" are also sung in English.

Lila's husband, Paul Cohen, is the musical director and saxophonist. He has brought together an excellent, international group of instrumentalists who come from the US, Mexico (string-multi-instrumentalist, Celso Duarte), Cuba (bassist, Junior Terry Cabrera), Chile (drummer/percussionist, Yayo), and Brazil (guitarist, Guilherme Monteiro). Mexican and American guitarists Ernesto Anaya and Marvin Sewell, make guest appearances, as does the renowned Japanese percussionist Satoshi Takeishi.

This is a wonderful CD! Lila Downs is a unique artist - simply superb! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Another great offering.......2005-06-16

On this Lila Downs fourth or fifth CD if you count the rerelease (with additional tracks)of "Sandunga" finds her even deeper and more comfortable in her binational soul. Revealing her bicultural identity by the light of the moon , much like a leopard in a starless night jungle, her vocals pounce on your soul, invading and capturing your innermost feelings. There is a certain maturity to her latest work that reveals an accomplished artist, one who has travelled the globe and still comes back to her roots. There are no less than five traditional songs that have been given the Lila Downs treatment to retain their folkloric roots but with an edge, the Lila Downs edge. Even the songs that are originals have that feeling of traditional folkloric music because of fine production and musicianship. Although Lila is the star, credit must be given to the tight band that hails from different lands and whose flags make them like a U.N. delegation. Of course, it goes without mentioning that Lila's "amorcito" Paul Cohen does a wonderful job arranging and producing the various melodies for a tight cohesive sound. If you are new to Lila you may feel the disc lacks continuity but this is who Lila is. She is a multitalented artist whose voice is like a contortionist, bending ,dipping and weaving between genres in her unimitable style. To say she is unique is an understatement. Whether she sings in husky tones, soft whispers, lingering, escalating ,suddenly diving operatic high notes or any style Lila chooses , she is fantastic. Listening to her gives me chills today just like the first time I heard her back in 1999 . The haunting melodies stay with you long after the disc stops playing. I've been listening to this disc for about a year now and never seem to get tired of it. I only put it away , off my multi-disc rotation to give others a chance but I always come back to her. She can sing avariety of styles, many are featured here and they are all really good. Obviously she could do just a jazz album, as is evident on her English version of "One Blood" where she sounds like like a sultry, throaty , Latina, Sade. Her talent is boundless. She has been compared to Chavela Vargas but really there is no comparison, there is Lila and then there is Lila. It is her style, her persona, her music that creates the magic. Some of the more traditional songs that have received the Lila treatment are the mystical "Cielo Rojo," "La Cucaracha," La Bamba," and "Paloma Negra" come to new life like antiques recently brought out of the cabinet to be proudly displayed at the table. Although I like very much the traditonal songs featured on this disc I am also drawn to "Dignificada" which has a slight reggae back beat, "Malinche" which explores the Mexican godmother cursed by some but that belongs to all of us who have Mexican heritage, the bluesy , rootsy sung in English "Mother Jones," the call to musical arms Paul Cohen sax introduction on the Arabic sounding "Brown Paper People" with it's hip-hop inflected vocals adding further worldly textures and both Spanish and English versions of "One Blood/ Una Sangre" solidify the bilingual/binational nature of this disc. Lila is like a fine glass of wine or aged anejo Tequila that resonates with the various nuances and influences of the earth and climate, creating an experience to be savored and to reflect upon. She is not a person who fits into the flavor of the day pop- variety-disposible-icons that flood the music market today. This is a true artist who reflects what many people only feel and cannot express. This is another in a succesive line of great Lila Downs albums to be experienced. As others have stated, check her out live too. I've seen her three times and her shows are incredible. You need this CD in your collection, your soul will never be the same.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Lila!!!.......2005-01-31

Lila Downs is by far the most amazing vocalist of our time. I have all her CD's and can't wait until the next. Her music and live shows are inspiring and moving. She's a Latina who keeps it real and is proud of who she is, where she comes from and where she's been. I had the honor of meeting her and her inner beauty surely compliments her outer beauty. Her talent is moving, and her humility inspiring. I recommend this CD 100% as well as all her others. Hear it for yourself... and catch her live performances when she's in your town!

4 out of 5 stars From Latin standard to modern vocals.......2004-11-18

UNA SANGRE/ONE BLOOD is perhaps the most startlingly contemporary. 'Viborita' opens with pounding drum beats, choral quality, and a beat that is contemporary in style.
Downs' vocals have moved from Latin standard to modern in UNA SANGRE, without losing any power.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

    4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

With Power in the Blood, A3 may have finally gotten everything right. Their first album, as good as it was, came across as a bit of a novelty record (maybe the world just wasn't quite ready for a mix of country and techno music?). Their second album, La Peste, upped the production stakes a bit too much, to the sacrifice of their country soul. So it's reassuring that Power in the Blood takes the best bits of both previous releases, resulting in their best album yet. It's still as slickly produced as the best dance music (they are, after all, labelmates with Bjork), but they manage to infuse their electronics with genuine heart and soul--they may be the first dance act that would sound just as good unplugged. Best of all, they manage to combine guitars and drum machines with catchy anti-establishment songs while never fully lapsing into the dubious realm of Chumbawamba, which is why it's perfectly acceptable to dance along to the banjos and fiddle on standout track "Woody Guthrie", even if it does boast a chorus that says "Don't need no country / Don't fly no flag / Cut no slack for the Union Jack / Stars and Stripes have got me jetlagged". Granted, Power in the Blood is not a perfect album--it's too long and the lyrics get a bit preachy and heavy handed--but it is a good one. The lyric "Mommas don't let your babies grow up to be DJs" (on the superbly-titled "The Devil Went Down to Ibiza") is alone worth the price of admission. --Robert Burrow

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Blood Type: A+.......2007-02-10

A3 has done it again. Their first album, "Exile on Coldharbour Lane," was a western-gospel inspired acid house party album, a blossoming transufsion of sparkling wit and musical genius. Their second album, "La Peste," was a darker, earthier treatise on pain, regret, and hope. "Power in the Blood," their third album, mixes the country harmonics and electro-house frequencies of the one with the crooning prison-cell flavor of the other, making for a product that is soulfully liquid but buzzing with dance-floor energy.

As always, the lyrics are rather political (in some cases, their message is almost too weighty to take -- see "Lord Have Mercy"), but this rarely gets in the way of their remarkably unique sound. As before, they slide between beautiful extremes, offering up uncut house with "Strobe Life" and acoustic spiritualism with "Let The Caged Bird Sing." There is the wickedly funny ("Yellow Rose"), the playfully ironic ("R.E.H.A.B."), the incriminating ("Woody Guthrie"), and the delightfully dark ("Power In The Blood").

The blend is wickedly sharp as usual. Their mix of soothing prarie psalms with the sneering static of hard house is something I never get tired of, a combo that lights a fire behind and beneath each of the songs. A3 is still belting out the beats, and they're still doing it in a way you have very likely never heard of before.

5 out of 5 stars Most original band I've heard in YEARS.......2005-06-18

If you're not listening to Alabama 3 (A3 in the U.S.) you are definitely missing out on some amazingly original and refreshing music. This is the best "NEW" stuff I've heard in maybe 10 years. Thank goodness for "The Sopranos" which turned me on to the band(theme song).

These guys don't even fit into a typical genre . . . we might need to invent one just for them. From the intense beats of the title track to the gospel beauty of REHAB, this album (and all of their albums) are filled with profound lyrics and a broad mixture of vocal and instrumental variety. One listen and you'll be ordering all of their albums.

4 out of 5 stars Take all that crap you like and throw it in a blender..........2003-11-23

So you like music, huh? You're picky too, eh? You say you like a little country, a dab of electronica, some crazy-cool techno, acid jazz, rock AND the blues!!!??? Well, why not listen to all of them at the same time? Alabama 3 can help you do just that, my little friend!! This disc has everything you'd ever want readily available to you, the demanding listener.

4 out of 5 stars Acoustic Power is worth it all.......2003-10-28

Power in the Blood is my least favorite album by this band. Having grown up in the south and in a gospel church most of my life, I loved the fusion of music styles on the first two albums. Power, is more of a pure house flavor, and Im not a big fan of house. Alas, I am an Alabama 3 fan and I have both the 1 CD England version and the US 'A3" 2CD album of Power, that has the 2ed CD Acoustic Power. It was worth it for these cool country flavored tunes from their albums.
    Id do it again.

4 out of 5 stars The world's best unknown band part 3.......2003-09-20

Power in the blood is a melting pot of the first two albums from Alabama 3 (A3 in America.) With the deep dark gritty blues from La Peste to the sweet upbeat country groove of Exile on Coldharbour lane. But with mixing the two it still falls slightly short of it's predecessors. I feel the flashy production took a bit away from the band being musicians. No harmonica and less acoustica shifts "Power" to a more Moby atmosphere. It's great album in itself but Exile and Le Peste really shows what this band can do. The album kicks off with a short little acoustic story that always makes me smile. Then rips into the album's title track with great lyrics but again turns me off a bit with the techno. The album's first single "Reachin" gives us the A3 we all know and love; smooth tranquility. Other tracks that stick out above the rest are Woody Guthrie, R.E.H.A.B. and Let the Caged Bird Sing which sound like sweet leftover Exile work and Load Have Mercy has a haunting Le Peste groove. New fans of A3; I'd pick up the albums in order to really appreciate a great band's original sound and progression.

      4 out of 5 stars Gift Idea.......2007-01-17

This was a gift for a man in my life who is a beer conosouir and fluent in German. I fell in love with the cover art because it was so humourous. According to him, the music is also fun and entertaining. This could make an excellent unique gift for someone, even as a joke.

5 out of 5 stars EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14

WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA TO TAKE HOLLYWOOD'S COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL EPIC MOVIES, EXTRACT THE BEST PORTIONS OF THE SCORES AND COMBINE THEM FROM THE DAWN OF MAN TO THE RECENT PAST. I PARTICULARLY ENJOY THE SUITES FROM GLADIATOR, BRAVEHEART AND THE VIKING. THE REPRODUCTION OF THESE SCORES BY THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS IS BRILLIANT, AND THE RECORDING WAS EXCELLENT. I ONLY WISH THERE WERE EIGHT DISCS INSTEAD OF FOUR TO COVER THE VOLUMES OF SCORES THAT COULD NOT BE INCLUDED. LET'S HOPE FOR A VOLUME II.

      4 out of 5 stars Interesting selections . . ........2006-12-15

This compiiation album makes an excellent gift for that person wanting to discover great, epic scores. I'm surprised, however, that Vangelis' Alexander is included in this one. Not bad, just surprised.

The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!

Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!

5 out of 5 stars "Epics featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra ~ 60 years of film scores".......2005-09-07

When I think of the "Golden Age of Hollywood", many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "EPICS:THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOLLYWOOD", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades right and up to the present 2005.

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classics that even the youngsters today recognize...sweeping scores that capture the drama, mystery, adventure, action and romance...one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this...many nominated and winners by the Academy for Best Original Score...

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come...this collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Compilation of Strauss Waltzes.......2001-09-30

For many years Willi Boskovsky, concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic, led his orchestra in its annual New Year's Day Concert series. I believe this splendid collection is recorded from many of these concerts, featuring both familiar and lesser known Strauss waltzes. Boskovsky was a superlative technician at the podium, but also one with much emotion, capturing the essence of Strauss' light-hearted music. Those in search of a definitive Strauss waltz collection need look no further.

5 out of 5 stars Best set of waltzes.......2001-09-26

I have had this set for almost 2 -3 years now. This set easily betters most other sets of waltzes I have heard. Highly recommended

      5 out of 5 stars Boskovsky's Secret.......2001-09-07

Before purchasing this two-CD set last year ..., I did considerable shopping for the "perfect" Strauss collection. Even at the time of purchase, all the Boskovsky hype left a nagging concern that these pieces might reflect too much Willi and not enough Strauss.

No need for concern. This offering is a treasure.

Part of Maestro Boskovsky's secret seems to be a perfect mix of technique and technicality -- a blend to please the romantic, the purist, and even us music lovers who are a little of both. His conducting reflects feeling and passion but without crossing the line and affecting the integrity of the music.

And the selection is great. Not only do we get the usual "suspects" but some slightly lesser known waltzes as well. Don't miss the energetic performance of Morning Papers, with its memorable brass passages played here to perfection.

Don't worry that it isn't a DDD recording; it's great digital stereo. Besides, it's the Vienna Philharmonic and Boskovsky! Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Good! But... what is in it?.......2000-03-05

I find the selection excelent but I regret that the titles are in German. Unless you speak German there is no way to learn the title of any of the waltz. A real pitty. The 3 stars I give it is because of the lack of English titles. The amazing thing is that the publishing company is British! Bloody mess!

5 out of 5 stars El mejor Strauss.......2004-10-02

5 out of 5 stars Johann Strauss: Waltzes and Polkas.......2003-05-26

I just bought this CD today and I agree with the previous review. This is a wonderful recording of Strauss' waltzes. I grew up with Antal Dorati's recording of the waltzes. However, I have not been able to find his recordings re-issued on CDs though! I wonder if Michael can let me know where to find the Dorati's Strauss CD? Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Ormandy Suited to Strauss.......2003-05-19

Stravinsky once said, in one of his "Prince Igor" moments, that Eugene Ormandy was a perfectly good conductor of Johann Strauss. Well his insult was half-right -- Ormandy is a good conductor of Strauss' Waltzes, he just also happens to be a great conductor of everything from Bach to Wagner. I personally feel that almost all of the material Ormandy committed to disc with the Philadelphians during his association with CBS/Columbia/Sony is worth owning, and this CD of Strauss Waltzes is no exception. While I'm not a huge waltz fan (I don't own one of those big Boskovsky Boxed Sets -- not yet anyway), I do have J. Strauss CDs by Bernstein, Dorati, Kleiber, Reiner and Walter, and the Ormandy is just as vibrant and joyous as any of the previously mentioned collections. I guess the one thing that does separate the Ormandy from the others is that it is the only one available at budget line. So with this title, you can waltz through the night and still have enough money left for drinks.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music........2007-01-10

I sat back with the lights dimmed and a cup of hot coffee and enjoyed the beautiful haunting music of years gone by. Memories abound.

4 out of 5 stars 5 stars for performance, 4 stars due to omissions.......2006-08-29

Why doesn't this get a perfect five stars?

      Simple reason.

The producers at Silva, for wahtever reason, decided to cut down their SHE suites and Hands of the Ripper suites.

On the previous Hammer releases, "Draculas - Classic Horror Films", released in 1993, recorded in 1989, they had seven additional minutes of "Hands of the Ripper" that could have been included on this set.

Additionally, The Devil Rides Out: Film Music of James Bernard, released in 1997, recorded in 1995 and 1996 had about a minute more of additional music from SHE, PLUS about seven minutes worth of suites from Quatermass and X: The Unknown.

Both discs in this new re-issue round out at around 68 minutes, so there was room for some of these omissions.

Silva Screen gets big kudos for a reissuing these recordeings in the remastered HDCD format, but I don't understand these omissions. In fact, one of the tracks included, "Vampire Hunter" isn't even from a Hammer film, and its the only recording on this collection not on previous Silva CD's.

Again, 5 stars for the performances, the 1989 performances with Neil Richardson and the Philharmonia are fantastic. (Dracula, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Dracula Has Risen From The Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Hands of the Ripper, Vampire Circus.)

Additionally, The Westminster Philharmonic under the baton of Kenneth Alwyn do an excellent job as usual (Kiss of the Vampire, Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, She, THe Abominable Snowman, Quatermass II and Curse of the Werewolf.) Finally, the City of Prague Philharmonic, who get a bad rap more often than they deserve round out hte album and IMHO, deliver the goods, under the trusty batons of Paul Bateman (Scars of Dracula, Frankenstein Created Woman, additionally, Bateman also plays the piano solo on Kiss of the Vampire.) and Nic Raine (The Devil Rides Out, One Million Years BC, When Dinosuars Ruled the Earth, Creatures The World Forgot, The Vampire Hunter)

I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.

Much thanks to producers David Wishart, Eric Tomlinson and James Fitzpatrick and recording engineers Mike Ross-Trevor, John Luard Timperley and Jan Holzner for contributing to these fine historical film music recordings.

5 out of 5 stars "Hammer & Silva...raises the hair on the back of your neck".......2002-04-09

Silva Screen takes us on tour through the castles of Transylvania with a collection of
outstanding scores from James Bernard on Disc One ~ "DRACULA" (1958)..."KISS OF
THE VAMPIRE" (1964)..."DRACULA PRINCE OF DARKNESS"
(1966)..."FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN" (1967)..."THE DEVIL RIDES OUT"
(1968)..."DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE" (1968)..."THE SCARS OF
DRACULA" (1970)..."TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA" (1970)...even though the
blood doesn't flow as easily in "KISS OF THE VAMPIRE", the score from Bernard is
seductive, sensual to say the least for "creatures of the night", masked ball scene blends
atmospheric trance-masquerade themes, intoxicating main title is hauntingly mesmerizing with
"VAMPIRE RHAPSODY", just listen to the piano solo from our character in the film Carl
Ravna (Barry Warren), son of Dr. Ravna (Noel Willman) along with daughter Sabena Ravna
(Jacqueline Wallis), a cult of vampires in early 20th century Bavarian, praying on a young
honeymoon couple...Bernard's rhapsody captures the listeners heart and BLOOD!

Let's look at Disc Two with the other Hammer themes and their composers ~ "THE
      ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN" (1957-Humphrey Searle)..."QUATERMASS II"
      (1957-James Bernard)..."CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF" (1960-Benjamin
      Frankel)..."CURSE OF THE MUMMY'S TOMB" (1964-Carlo Martelli)..."SHE"
      (1965-James Bernard)..."ONE MILLION YEARS B.C." (1966-Mario
Nascimbene)..."WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH" (1969-Mario
      Nascimbene)..."HANDS OF THE RIPPER" (1971-Christopher Gunning)..."VAMPIRE
      CIRCUS" (1971-David Whitaker)..."VAMPIRE HUNTER" (2000-James
Bernard)...difficult as it may be, there is a stand out ~ "THE CURSE OF THE
WEREWOLF", fine direction from Terence Fisher (director) with an outstanding cast Oliver
Reed (Leon-the Werewolf), Clifford Evans (Alfredo), Yvonne Romain (Servant Girl) and
Catherine Feller (Christina), Hammer's departure from the old stereotype of the beast is
refreshing, Reed's performance as the tormented sole, from man to wolf is touching, the score
by Ben Frankel is tense building at it's best, to say the least, setting the tone and mood for the
transformation with counterpoints is stimulating, inclusive orchestration development for what
lies ahead during a full moon.

Without a doubt the highlight pick hands down is "SHE", composer James Bernard gives of
himself without question, the SUITE takes the orchestra into lilting melodic exercises with
percussion chiming in, the harmonies are hypnotic blends of textured fabric, listen as The
Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Alwyn display stirring strings and
a solo harp run the scales in "THE ETERNAL FLAME AND THE DESTRUCTION OF
SHE", hold-fast arrangement has haunting echoes of Bernard's constant theme, with a final
beat from a drum in the percussion section.

Must make mention the cast of players that made this possible ~ The Philharmonia Orchestra,
The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, The Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra ~ and
their various conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Neil
Richardson...supported by the illustrious staff from Silva Screen Records LTD ~ Reynold da
Silva (executive producer), David Stoner (associate producer), Gareth Williams (Dolby
Surround/HDCD Mastering) and of course James Fitzpatrick (compilation producer), who
has the knack of developing quality in every Silva Screen release...similar to "A History Of
Horror:From Nosferatu To The Sixth Sense" (SSD-1111/2CD Set), guaranteed to raise the
