5 out of 5 stars It was an impulse buy..........2007-05-13

I heard a Carpenters song on the radio one day and decided to look for a CD since I loved their music growing up. It's amazing how much beautiful music they made in such a relatively short period of time. The mastering of this CD is great. The songs sound as fresh as they did back then.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-04-28

I received these CD's yesterday and put them directly into the CD player. Karen Carpenter may be my alltime favorite vocalist. I was not disappointed. Everything I hoped for and then some.

4 out of 5 stars Bought for Mom, but I enjoyed a few songs myself!.......2007-04-26

You try not singing along with Karen on "Close To You" - I challenge you!

5 out of 5 stars Great Sound.......2007-04-14

Karen Carpenter had a great voice, and here is a big collection of songs from this brother and sister team.To name the best songs from this duo is difficult because there is so many to choose from. But a definite favorite is Top Of The World.I love that tune.
But a song that realy established them was (They Long To Be) Close To You.That song is about their most known song and i love it.There is a great assortment of songs here like We've Only Just Begun.I wont go through all the songs as The Carpenters were consistently good.

5 out of 5 stars "We Were Alone And . . . I'm Singing This Song For You" .......2007-04-13

"Listen to the melody
'Cause my love is in there hiding
I love you in a place
Where there's no space or time
I love you for my life
You are a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and . . .
I was singing this song for you." ~ A Song For You ~ Words & Music by Leon Russell

"Karen and I turned out to be the number one American-born hit makers of the 1970s and to date, with successes in every decade following our debut, our worldwide sales have topped 100 million units. Not too shabby for a pair of siblings from middle-class suburbia, who at first were more interested in listening to music than performing it." ~ Richard Carpenter, Liner Notes - June 2005 ~

Where were you when the Carpenters were so sensational and their songs were hitting the airwaves almost every hour? Where were you when their albums were selling like hotcakes?

Karen's vocal artistry is a pearlescent beauty full of luster, it's almost impossible not to be swept away by it and Richard has the exceptional creativity as a pianist, arranger, composer and conductor. With their extraordinary talents combined, they paved the way to many of their bestselling albums that contain their all-time hit songs. This 2-CD-set, "Carpenters: Gold" is a compilation of their most remarkable recordings - forty of their most-loved songs of all-time. My only concern is why an achingly beautiful song "I Can Dream, Can't I?" is not in this compilation. It would have been perfect if this favorite song of mine is included.

There are so many nice songs from this gold collection but the ones that particularly appeal to me are the following:

Disc One:

"We've Only Just Begun," "This Masquerade," "Superstar," "Rainy Days And Mondays," "Let Me Be The One," "Maybe It's You," "Reason To Believe," It's Going To Take Sometime This Time," There's A Kind Of Hush" "Only Yesterday" and "California Dreamin'."

Disc Two:

"A Song For You," "I Won't Last A Day Without You," "They Long To Be Close To You," "I Just Fall In Love Again," "Ticket To Ride," "Trying To Get The Feeling Again," "Yesterday Once More," "For All We Know" and of course "Merry Christmas Darling."

"Karen's Theme" is also a favorite of mine. It's a charming instrumental piece showcasing not only Mr. Carpenter's piano skills but also his creativity in composing remarkable music. He wrote the opening melody used for the biopic "The Karen Carpenter Story" in 1989, and he completed the melody, arranged and recorded this beautiful piece in late 1996 for his album Richard Carpenter: Pianist, Arranger, Composer, Conductor that was released in March of 1997 by A & M Records.

The above-mentioned songs are so powerful that they can penetrate your ears down to your heart to forever reside in there. They also symbolize an emotion gently and tenderly unfolding like the love growing in your heart.

You will most definitely love these CDs not only for the perfect set of songs but also for its 23-pages CD booklet with self-written Liner Notes by Mr. Carpenter plus the track listing with brief information of each song.

A heartwarming treasure.

From Amazon.co.uk Review

As fine an album as this might be (and indeed it is), it serves a much higher purpose for which it must be immediately recognised. The twee Swedish trio have single-handedly tugged whistling out of popular music's pits where it was stuffed by German soft metal granddads The Scorpions back in the early 90s. It's not even particularly proficient whistling - it's a bit skewiff really, a little out of tune - but it's tacked onto the irresistibly bobbing, Velvet-Underground-via-The-Concretes infectiousness of "Young Folks", augmented by the warm-ember vocals of ex-Concrete Victoria Bergsman herself, and by association sounds fairly heroic. Accidentally anthemic, perhaps, but anthemic nonetheless. Result.

Which sets a tone for the rest of this off-kilter lo-fi record. Draw a slightly wonky line from Simon & Garfunkel through to The Shins, making sure you take in the sharp Scandinavian indie-pop of the '90s (Wannadies, The Cardigans) and modern day peers (Radio Dept, Shout Out Louds) and you have a folk album that isn't really all that folk, swimming through its own dreamy washes of ambition. The drumming on tracks like "Let's Call It Off" and "Paris 2004" is so elementary you might as well add your own, but it keeps the intuitive, simplistic 60's beat melodies trickling steadily onwards. The underlying appeal is that things could snap like an elastic band at any moment, that things are beautifully limited. Less writers block, more loving the detail of your first chapter so much you have no inclination to move on. --James Berry

Dreamy and beatnik with a cool throbbing tempo -- the ultimate song to drive your car to. This is a must have for any music library.

A Bjorn Winner!

1 out of 5 stars Unlistenable Garbage.......2007-06-04

This band is bad in a way that's hard to describe. In the indie world, there's no real premium on really good musical chops, so it's not fair to say that they're not really very good musicians -- though they aren't -- their problems are much deeper.

Their songs are poorly formed, weakly presented, and seemingly without motive. It's not even like listening to a high-school band. It's like listening to a rehearsal by a band that hopes to be able to play for a middle school dance, if they can just figure out a cool name.

This is a band with nothing to say that should learn not to say it.

4 out of 5 stars I hvae writer's block.......2007-05-23

Swedish pop group Peter Bjorn and John are apparently trying to confuse us, and for a brief time, it works.

Their third album "Writer's Block" has the misfortune to open on a rather saggy note, but fortunately hoists itself up for a blurry blend of indiepop and northern atmospheric synth. So straggle through the first two tracks, because the indiepop that follows is solid, multilayered and quite excellent.

It opens with a faint, atmospheric little track that sounds like Sigur Ros tuning up. Then suddenly it careens into nonstop guitar pop in "Object of My Affection," with drums pounding right over those steely riffs. "And you still can make sense/if you just show up and present an honest face/instead of that grin," Peter Morén sings happily.

Not only is it a lot simpler than the other songs, but I got a headache from those relentless drums and guitar. At that point I was groaning, anticipating a whole album of the same. But I was wrong.

Things start perking up with the shimmying, sunny indiepop of "Young Folks," which has some enchantingly feathery edges and constant whistling. The other songs have a similar mix of shimmery keyboard and solid indiepop -- thumpy little marches, swirling psychedelic hymns, gentle ballads blooming into driving guitarpop, folksy ballads, and the shimmering prettiness of "The Chills."

For your info, there is no Peter Bjorn -- it's actually "Peter, Bjorn and John," three Swedish guys who play the instruments and all provide vocals. And despite a couple of mediocre songs on "Writer's Block," these guys really know how to make great indiepop -- lots of northern wind and snow, and a delightfully sunny 1970s pop mentality.

There's plenty of ringing, peppy guitar and unstoppable bass from Morén and Björn Yttling, while John Eriksson provides some fast drumming as well. Yttling swaddles almost all the melodies in a hazy edge of soft, colourful synth, and turning some of them into bittersweet, chilly pop. Most of the songs are pretty upbeat, even with a bit of harmonica and whistling to remind us to be cheery.

Much of the album is about sort of ambiguous -- half of it seems to be about breaking up with a lover, and the other half is about how much you adore them. "Your tongue is sharp/but I miss the taste of it/You said time heals/there's not enough of it..." Moren sings in his slightly nasal voice. It's just a few songs after, "Hours seems to disappear/everyone is leaving -- I'm still with you."

"Writer's Block" has a couple tracks that don't quite fit in, but the overall album is a delicious blend of cheery pop melodies and blurry keyboard. Definitely a good listen.

4 out of 5 stars Great new band!.......2007-05-13

If you heard one of their songs on the radio and are debating whether it's worth buying the album......it's worth it. There are 4-5 very good songs on this one. Which isn't a bad ratio these days. Amsterdam, Chills, Young Folks and Paris 2004 among them.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars because of Amsterdam.......2007-05-13

This album is fantastic. Amsterdam is the best song of the century.

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Blessing.......2007-07-06

The music of Tim Janis' album 'Flowers In October' is the most beautiful I have ever heard. "Isles of Shoals" brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard it, and continues to move me. Tim Janis is an incredible composer and musician and his music is a gift we are blessed with.

5 out of 5 stars Touches your soul.......2007-03-11

Bought this music to listen to while I read before bed. It is so beautiful that I kept finding myself listening to the CD and not reading the book. Highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely breathtaking.......2006-09-09

I just purchased this two volume set and was I ever amazed! At first I thought "cool, two CDs". Then I realized that one of them was actually a DVD. When I slipped it into my computer, I was treated to some of the most breathtaking nature scenes along with some of the most gorgeous music. I love the way Tim Janis makes each song a theme for the awesome visuals that take you away to places you've never been. I would recommend this set to anyone. It's wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Big Band Swing in the Digital Age.......2007-08-08

The Big Band Sound LIVES! For years I have listened to a cassette recording of the vinyl "Glenn Miller: Pure Gold" whenever the Big Band mood struck me.

It's a breath of fresh air to ehar these great songs freshly recorded by a new generation of musicians populating the on-going Glenn Miller Orchestra.

"String Of Pearls" has always been a favorite of mine, and here it's updated very well.

I miss the vocal of Ray Eberle on "At Last", but here the band still serves up a fine instrumental rendition of a great love song.

"Pennsylvania 6-5000" retains the telephone ring, with a fun touch-tone thrown in at the end.

"Moonlight Serenade" has never sounded better.

I did not grow up during the original Big Band heyday - my parents did.
I'm a child of Rock & Roll, and I always will be. But my old man turned me on to some cool jams from his youth, too.

As somebody once said, "Back then, recording techniques were in their infancy. But today - WE can record music as it IS - as YOU hear it!
Crisp and clear with every note as bright as the stars in the eyes of the lady you're dancing with!"

Yeah. That says it, man!

Buy this CD, and dig how cool the Big Band Sound really is!

1 out of 5 stars Don't Do It!.......2005-02-09

Glenn Miller had several great bands. This is not one of them.
These have to be the most soulless, sterile, uninspiring versions of these songs available. Yeah, it was recorded digitally, but so what? Everything sounds close-miked and unbalanced. Did the drummer on these tracks ever even HEAR an original Miller recording?? Man...way off.
Could have been a good idea, but badly executed. The 15-track Greatest Hits CD (RCA), on the other hand, is remastered with care and sounds a lot better than this plastic recording, Hi-Fi
or not.

3 out of 5 stars Buy it for the booklet and not the music.......2002-10-05

My number-one question is, Why did they bother to produce a recording by studio musicians who, regardless of their abilities, don't really have a feel for the Miller sound? The music is technically perfect, but lacking not just the "soul" of the original orchestra but even that of the follow-on bands led by Ray McKinley, Tex Beneke, and Larry O'Brien. Anyone who wants to hear the TRUE Miller sound would be much better served by buying any of the dozens of albums available by the original civilian and AAF orchestras. The sheer number that are for sale, some 60 years on, are a far greater tribute to Glenn Miller's talent than is this CD.

I did assign 3 stars, primarily for the accompanying booklet. It goes far beyond the normal recitations of Miller's life and tragic disappearance, providing insights into his personality along with a treasure trove of little-known facts. For example, how many fans are aware that he authored a reference book about arranging techniques, or that "In the Mood" was originally titled "Tar Paper Stomp"?

Unfortunately even the booklet is not without its problems. There are at least a half-dozen major factual errors, including an entire paragraph referring to Skip MARTIN, rather than Skip NELSON, as the vocalist who followed Ray Eberle in the final months of the civilian band's existence. Yes, there was a Skip Martin in the band as well, but he played sax for a while around 1940 - hardly the same role or time frame. If the music were better I might excuse the gaffes, but I can't.

5 out of 5 stars Always in the mood for this cd.......2001-02-04

My brother first got this album and was playing it one Christmas when all the family was home. This united the generations and had everyone dancing to its rich, full beat.

It pulsates, it moves, it's good stuff!

4 out of 5 stars Get ready to swing!!.......2001-01-28

Amazing sound quality. Great music. Includes informative 44-page booklet on Miller's history and informative liner notes on each song.

So why only 4 stars and not 5?

First, the running time is only a half hour, but seeing it was recorded in 1983 (when the average album's running time was 35-40 minutes), I can understand why. Also, although these recordings are stunning, they are not originals. But that would defeat the purpose of creating a superior sounding CD, which is why these songs were re-recorded with a digital mood!! This is an enjoyabe addition to your Miller collection.

For a great original Miller CD, I highly recommend "The Essential Glenn Miller" (2CD's).

Torrential creativity has fast-forwarded the artistic evolution of former Whiskeytown frontman Ryan Adams from country-rock boy wonder (see Faithless Street) to despondent troubadour with a 1960s fixation (his solo debut Heartbreaker), but it may also explain why listeners often need to wade through some pedestrian material just to find a few pearls of poetic excellence. Gold is no exception to that trend, a sometimes engaging middle-of-the-road roots-pop album that's both overlong (70 minutes) and at times overindulgent. There are high spots--such as the bouncy, breezy opener "New York, New York" and the plaintive ballad "When the Stars Go Blue" (which features a vocal turn reminiscent of Morrissey)--but much of the disc gets lost in forests of indistinct guitars and plodding percussion that never nudges Adams into actually rocking. Gold is the work of a notoriously prolific songwriter who hasn't yet learned to play to his strengths, one whose execution doesn't yet match his vision. --Anders Smith Lindall

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bonus CD is worth it.......2006-10-21

If you haven't purchased "Gold" yet and you love Ryan Adams, or maybe are just starting to get into him, I would suggest shelling out the few extra bucks for the gold in the bonus CD. "The Fools We are as Men" is probably one of my top 5 RA faves, and "Rosalie" is awesome too. Of course, it goes without saying that "Gold" itself is a classic. Don't think, just buy.

3 out of 5 stars "Gold"? Um............2006-03-28

Other than the complete "Love Is Hell" album which I find very consistent, this is your typical Ryan Adams album. Meaning half these songs ARE gold, and of course the others are just so-so. His first real hit "New York, New York" is here, and that's a great start to the album. I find the rest like "Firecracker", "Gonna Make You Love Me", and "Nobody Girl" to be good, and others like the last few should have simply been dropped. My overall favorite track is "When The Stars Go Blue", which is a primo Adams song if there ever was one (also covered by The Corrs and Bono). The bonus disc is a nice extra for the big fan, and I enjoy it, but not so essential to buy this twice for. In short a must for the fanatic, but I like "Heartbreaker" and "Cold Roses" better.

4 out of 5 stars Perhaps His Best.......2005-11-05

Oops. After struggling with Adams' previous album, Heartbreaker, and eventually giving up on it, I presumed that his solo career was going to hold little interest for me. Well, based on Gold, I'm going to have to re-evaluate that presumption. Where Heartbreaker was lackluster and dull, Gold is ambitious and intriguing. Heartbreaker lulled me to sleep with an endless series of lullaby-like dirges, but this new collection sets the pace with a bit more energy, resulting in an album that is downright stimulating, or at least interesting. The full collection features a rather generous twenty-one songs, five of which appear on a second disk entitled `Side 4'.

Most of the songs here are chord-driven, mid-tempo rockers with appealing melodies. The overall feel remains earthy, but Adams isn't afraid to use flourishes as required, so arrangements are sometimes ornamental, using orchestration and choruses to full effect. It's no wonder that Elton John took a liking to Adams, since the arrangements here suggest those found on Tumbleweed Connection and his own first album. At other times, Adam sounds like he could have been writing for the 1974-era Faces; a song like "Rescue Blues" could have been an outtake from the "Ooh La La" sessions. At first, "New York" sounds like a love letter to Manhattan, but it is really directed to a female resident. In retrospect, the video that accompanied this track is relatively creepy, since it featured Adams singing with the World Trade Center as his backdrop, filmed just days before 9/11.

As the disk progresses, the songs build upon one another. "Firecracker" is a pleasant, rootsy, mid-tempo rocker that is typical of the album, as is "Answering Bell, which also features a fine melody but adds a nice organ break for flavor. The best songs arrive mid-disk, though, with the melancholy reflection of
"Somehow, Someday" surpassed only by the gorgeously wrought melody of "When the Stars Go Blue," a song that might qualify as Adams' best to date. "Sylvia Plath" could have been equally intriguing, but a line like "Maybe she'd give me a bath" wrecks the mood, since it strikes me as a rather obvious and artless reach for a rhyme with the subject's name. The overall mood here is both sad and beautiful, although things start to slack off towards disk's end. The bonus tracks add some fun to the equation, and although Gold still has its share of filler, there is plenty here to recommend it.

Afternote - In the wake of Gold, Adams seemed poised to hit a home run with his next record. Instead, he opted to bunt, releasing a collection of uneven demo tracks. Far be it from me to give career advice, though. For me, the bottom line is that there is one great Ryan Adams solo record, and this is it. A- Tom Ryan

4 out of 5 stars Gold.......2005-02-03

GOLD is Ryan Adams second album and has some really memorable songs. This Limited Edition is worth seeking out. It has a bonus disc with some outtakes from the GOLD sessions. The bonus disc includes tracks such as "The Bar is a Beautiful Place" which is my favorite, "Rosalie Come and Go", "Sweet Black Magic", "Cannonball Days" and "The Fools We Are As Men". The CD also includes the original GOLD disc. Highlights include "When The Stars Go Blue", "Nobody Girl", "La Cienega Just Smiled", "Somehow, Someday", "Answering Bell", "Firecracker" and "The Rescue Blues". A great album from Ryan Adams worth picking up if you haven't already!

5 out of 5 stars The REAL DEAL!.......2004-01-20

I saw an episode of Music in High Places (a great series...but not as popular as TRL-like crap unfortunately) a number of years ago and was really impressed by the artist....but I didn't see the credits. It drove me crazy for months until I found out that it was Ryan adams live in Jamaica. I've been a huge fan ever since.

His CD, GOLD, is the best music to come out in a decade. This one should be rated a 5 star classic. Adams reverently wears his influences on his sleeve...you hear Keith Richard's (tastiest)riffs in the Rescue Blues and tinges of the Allman Brothers and Neil Young elsewhere ...but it is the simplcity of pure Ryan Adams in La Cienaga Just Smiled that just blows me away. The acoustic guitar on the bridge to that song just has to be heard. It is simply beautiful.

I told my 13 year old son that I liked Ryan Adams because he was the "real deal" and not some Counting Crows-like derivitive "sounds familiar" type artist. When we went to see the Annie Leibovitz photographs from her book "American Music", this past weekend at the EMP museum here in Seattle he noticed that along with the photos of Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, The North Mississippi All Stars and Iggy Pop , Ryan Adams was chosen as a representative of American Music....

My son walked past photos of Bonnie Rait, Emmylou Harris and B.B. King and said "Hey Dad look, Ryan Adams...."

5 out of 5 stars All I can say is Wow!.......2007-01-14

This is the first Jeremy Camp CD I have bought. Since buying it, I have kept it in my car's CD player and Ipod (listening to it everywhere and anywhere I go). The songs have the tendency to move me and I can't hardly ever get most of them out of my head. Although I think all of these songs are great, my favorites are Restored, Take You Back, Lay Down My Pride, My Desire, and This Man. If you haven't gotten this CD yet, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Restored has been 'restored'!.......2006-04-05

If you liked his restored CD, as did I, you will obviously like this one. The only catch is that you will probably like this one better!! This JC disc has all the same songs from the first 'Restored' disc, plus four, count them, FOUR NEW TRACKS. Two of those tracks are new ones written by Mr. Camp, and two are worship songs covered by Mr. Camp.
If that wasn't enough, inside the cover are not only the lyrics for the songs, but an intimate revelation from Jeremy of his meaning behind the music.

5 out of 5 stars Super NE fan!.......2007-01-10

I am a huge fan of New Edition as a group and as solo artists. I have every single thing they have ever done, but to have all the favorites wrapped up into 2 disc ..........WONDERFUL!!!
I recommend this CD to anyone that is a super fan or you like certain songs and do not want to buy a full CD. Believe me..you will find the song on Gold. They did not miss anything with this one.

I LOVE IT!!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest R&B groups at their best.......2006-12-03

I've been a die hard fan of New Edition since I can remeber and without a doubt this is the best collection for any new fan to get. It has all the classic jams from the group together and solo.

5 out of 5 stars A Collection That's Worth The Money.......2006-02-03

Finally, a New Edition collection that gives a nice selection of major hits and dynamic album tracks all on two discs. There have been quite a few single disc compilations over the years, but none as comprehensive as this latest release. We all know the group had plenty of jams as well as a bunch of solo hits that we want to listen to as well. Classic gems from early in their career include "Lost In Love," "Count Me Out," "Mr. Telephone Man," and "Cool It Now." A few album tracks from then sneak on this double disc as well, namely "Earth Angel," "My Secret (Didja Gitit Yet)," "With You All The Way," and "A Little Bit Of Love (Is All It Takes)." The middle years brought a few more group cuts like "If It Isn't Love," "Your Not My Kind Of Girl," "N.E. Heartbreak," and "Crucial" (the 12" version is featured on here). But those middle years also brought about everybody's solo albums too.

Bobby's smashes are represented on here with "My Prerogative," "On Our Own," "Don't Be Cruel," "Every Little Step," "Humpin Around," and "Girlfriend." Ralph's solo joints include "Do What I Gotta Do," "Sensitivity," and "Money Can't Buy You Love" from the Mo' Money soundtrack. Johnny Gill is finally given his props after being left off most other N.E. collections. His featured songs are "Rub You The Right Way," "Wrap My Body Tight" and "My My My." Bell Biv Devoe round out the solo cuts with "Poison," "When Will I See You Smile Again," and "B.B.D. (I Thought It Was Me)." The later years bring all six members of New Edition back together with the release of Home Again. "I'm Still In Love With You" "You Don't Have To Worry," "Hit Me Off," and "One More Day" are the classics from Home Again that are added to this colossal collection.

New Edition to this day don't get the respect that they rightly deserve. They set trends, they came with it for years as a group as well as on the solo tip, and they are still going strong to this day. According to Bobby Brown, they are planning a national tour with all six members taking part. Hopefully they will have time in between to record at least one more classic to add to their arsenal. Gold shines bright and will please any New Edition fan in addition to those who just want a massive package of their biggest hits. N.E. Forever!

5 out of 5 stars This album is the best!.......2006-01-26

I am enjoying this album so much! If you are a true, die hard, fan than New Edition Gold must be added to your collection. It is missing a few of the other hits, but it made up for it with the others. I highly recommend GOLD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of New Edition, solo and other groups' hits! .......2006-01-14

I don't know how this compilation producer did it with combining 34 of the New Edition, solo and group hits, even bad boy Bobby Brown! This is better than the singular 70- and 79-minute best of CDs that didn't cover everything. I would have liked Candy Girl, Is This The End and Jealous Girl on there, but I'm sure the group had to go through some legal mess to get the rights. But aside from that, this group shows how much they've grown and evolved in two decades, from Cool It Now, to the funky late '86 hit Once In A Lifetime Groove (which I played a lot last year!), to If It Isn't Love, to Can You Stand The Rain to Hit Me Off. The solo offerings from the street mental sounds of Bell Biv Devoe to bad boy tough guy Bobby Brown to the soulful Johnny Gill to the smooth singing of my boy Ralph Tresvant are well represented in this collection. I could play any one of these songs if I wanted to--everything I love is on here!!! Groups like Jagged Edge, B5, the Backstreet Boys and others should thank this group a million times for inspiring them. They brought class to music and still do today in their performing. A dynamite collection of their best records!

4 out of 5 stars Ancerl's Live Concert Account Is Even Better!.......2004-06-08

Karel Ancerl (1908-73) was one of the greatest of all Czech conductors. He always reminds me of a Fritz Reiner with more heart and a wider range of sympathies. Sadly, Ancerl was no stranger to tragedy: his entire family perished in concentration camps during World War II, and Ancerl's own imprisonment led to impaired health and a premature death.

This "Ma Vlast" is one of the great studio accounts. To my ears, the earlier Supraphon CD transfer from 1994 was a bit less glassy than this new "Gold Series" edition. As a performance, I would rank it just behind the wonderful mono Czech Phil. accounts by Vaclav Talich and Karel Sejna (both on Supraphon).

But if you get a chance, try to run down the magnificent 7-disc Tahra set "Centenary of the Czech Philharmonic (1896-1996): Homage to the Orchestra and Karel Ancerl." It contains a live "Ma Vlast" given in 1967 at Montreal when the orchestra was on tour. Like Furtwangler, Ancerl in live concert was a completely different conductor from what he was in the studio. The extra spark and fire on display in Ancerl's live account really put this studio recording in the shade. I think that live reading is fully equal to both Sejna and Talich.

"Ma Vlast" is a masterpiece of romantic nationalism. From the very opening of "Vysehrad," with the bard strumming his harp, this music casts a unique spell. "Moldau," the best known piece by Smetana, is one of the greatest tone poems of descriptive music ever composed. I feel that "From Bohemia's Woods and Meadows" is the real heart of the cycle - not even Dvorak wrote anything that so captures the rustic beauty of the Czech countryside. And I love the way Smetana starts "Blanik" as a continuation of where the preceding "Tabor" leaves off - Beethoven used that same technique in his 8th Symphony.

To conclude: if you want to hear Ancerl's finest Ma Vlast, try to find the Tahra set, which is filled with live performances that are generally preferable to their studio counterparts. It also contains several items that Ancerl never recorded, such as Dvorak's Symphonic Variations, Mozart's "Prague" Symphony, and the Sibelius 1st.

5 out of 5 stars Ancerl's Ma Vlast - The Gold Standard.......2003-07-19

The Supraphon label has been doing an excellent job of reissuing large parts of their back catalog over the last few years. Not only are they releasing numerous performances with the Czech Philharmonic and visiting conductors like Kletzki, Markevitch, Matacic and Fournet, but they have also remastered (in 24/96) many of the recordings of conductor Karel Ancerl in a new series called the "Gold Edition." Volume 1 of this series features Ancerl and the Czech PO on one of their signature pieces, Smetana's cycle of Symphonic Poems, "Ma Vlast" (My Country). Like Talich and Kubelik before him, Ancerl extrapolates the essence of this great symphonic cycle from the Czech players as they turn in a truly spectacular 1963 golden-age stereo perofrmance, on par with the best ever made. It is only fitting that Ma Vlast and the Dvorak 9th are the first two volumes in the "Karel Ancerl Gold Edition" because these two recordings are the truly definitive sets from this collection. This is a remarkable disc, and I look forward to purchasing (and reviewing) more titles from the "Gold Edition."

5 out of 5 stars the best starflyer remastered with bonus tracks.......2005-07-27

The Gold album is the best Starflyer 59 album ever and finally it has been remastered and released with added tracks. I was lucky to discover this album in 1995, when it came out. I was a junior in college and just went through the worst year of my life. I turned to Gold during this time, and I still listen to it ten years later. It is quite simply a masterpiece, in what Jason Martin basically did as a solo project "Gold" displays his best songs along with droning guitar solos that seem to go on forever. SF59 were still in their shoegaze phase but Gold goes way beyond any genre of music. It's sad, depressing, uplifting, and beautiful all rolled into one. On this release, you also get some of the best songs ever by the band with tracks from Goodbyes Are Sad, and the Ep Le Venquiere. SF59 have made so many good albums but this is their best with Americana and Silver close in second, or hell just buy anything by them, you'll be blown away. No tracks need to be mentioned, just push play and escape.

5 out of 5 stars Silver and Gold, never gets old...........2005-07-13

So they re-released Starflyer's "Silver" and "Gold" albums, and I love them both, and they both sound as good as ever. They've remastered 'em perfectly and added some tracks from EPs and singles that have been out of print forever, just like these albums. You know how some of those old shoegazer records you used to like haven't really held up over the years? Well that's not true of Starflyer. These two albums, combined with "Red" (aka "Americana"), make up a fine trilogy. You need all three.

5 out of 5 stars Starflyer 59's "Gold" Re-Released!!!.......2005-06-29

The "Gold" album from 1995 is Starflyer 59's follow-up to their monumental "Silver" album and in a sense, picks up where that album left off. "Gold" finds Jason Martin and friends experimenting with an even more dense and darker sound that the previous album with many of its songs dealing with melancholy subjects as feeling "messed up". Like "Silver", people soaked the "Gold" album up and alongside its predecessor, has become an alternative rock classic. "Gold" has fallen out-of-print in recent years and until now, has been difficult to find.
Along with the reissue of "Silver" comes the "Gold" deluxe edition repackaged with new artwork and bonus material. Besides the proper album, the "Gold" reissue includes both tracks from the rare 7" single "Goodbyes Are Sad" as well as three out of the four tracks that encompassed the ultra-rare "Le Vainqueuer" EP (the lone hold-out being the 'radio edit' of the full version of the EP's title track). The remastered sound is amazing with the loud guitars having more of a prestine bite that on the original edition. There is also some restored low-end to the drums as well.
Despite the original artwork not being reproduced, this is made up for by the great music heard within. This is one of Starflyer's greatest albums now expanded to an epic 73-minutes. For those who missed "Gold" the first time around, you get a triple dose of classic Starflyer here starting with the proper "Gold" album, then the "Goodbyes Are Sad" 7-inch and finally the "Le Vainqueuer" EP all on one disc at a great price.

4 out of 5 stars A unique view on Mahler's swansong.......2005-10-14

The Mahler Symphony No. 9 is typically seen as Mahler's omen of death because it was written at the time of the composer's heart ailment and the death of his daughter. Endearing stories about composers not outliving their Ninth Symphonies (Beethoven, Schubert, Bruckner among others) contribute to the legend that the Mahler 9 portrays the end of the composer's life.

In this performance, Karel Ancerl takes a unique view of the music. Compared to other versions I have heard including the Haitink, Lopez Cobos and Karajan's 1982 concert version -- which most critics consider the benchmark performance of this score -- Ancerl's performance at first seemed "fast" to me. His tempo in the first movement seemed almost jaunty compared to others and his total time of 78:53 is rapid compared to most recordings.

However, as the vast first movement continued to unfold, an alternate description of the music began to appear. Ancerl's approach was no longer universally fast; it was more episodic, moving from urgency to tentativeness to happiness to victorious emotions.

At about 11:35, Ancerl suddenly crashes and returns to the depth of despair, with happiness recurring at 15:30. And this with 11 minutes to go in the first movement! It is quite a contrast to Karajan's outlook of extended tragedy.

The second movement landler is more traditional in Ancerl's hands, with the Burleske in the third movement becoming more of a grotesque dance of instruments than the other versions I've heard.

In the finale, where Karajan made his name with this work by maintaining tension throughout the more than 30-minute span, Ancerl projects extended sorrow without tension while maintaining the pain inherent to Mahler's end of life vision. It later morphs to stream of consciousness before evolving to the final inevitable abyss of nothingness that critics and musicologists testify is Mahler's end.

I enjoy this performance, in which the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra plays with authoritative virtuosity. Recorded in 1966 in the notoriously clangorous Rudolfinum, the sound on the Ancerl "Gold Edition" CD has been improved and is in league with modern DDD recordings. Every instrument can be heard and the recording is head and shoulders above the Karajan 1982 classic.

All told, this is a fine performance from one of the eminent conductors from the golden era of classical recordings in sound that rivals the best from today. For $10 or less, this is excellent value and should be considered by all Mahler lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely crushing Mahler!!.......2005-07-31

This is a great version of the 9th.
I have particularly come to enjoy the last two movements. The neurotic elements of the 3rd and the heavenly parts of 4 sell it to me.
You can't miss with this recording.
Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars A superb interpretation of Mahler #9.......2004-11-01

This classic Karel Ancerl recording is, in my opinion, one of the best accounts of Mahler's ninth symphony that is available at present. Here we have it in a new remastering, which improves the original stereo sound.

The playing of the orchestra is outstanding, especially the brass department (note the typical horn vibrato) and the recording quality is very good for its age. But, above all, this CD is to be treasured for Ancer's superb interpretation, which is as good as an interpretation can be: moving, powerful, balanced, convincing, non-mainstream, and provoking.

Strongly recommended!
