Rounder Records deserves much praise for brightening up the often dull and familiar American pop musicscape with a flurry of releases that challenge our stereotypical view of "island music." This is particularly true of the music of Trinidad and Tobago, identified in the American popular mind with the synthetic Calypso-meets-disco sound of soca. While soca is a more complex and worthy genre than some opine, it's associated less with Calypso's social protest and hilariously witty innuendo than with less-graceful expressions like popular soca artist Arrow's sexual request in "Winey Winey" to "winey winey 'pon your pum-pum." This fascinating CD puts the gleam on the fine old wood of the earliest Calypso songs, featuring wonderfully baroque orchestrations from the finest T&T Calypso orchestras from 1914 to the '50s, with elegant keyboard passages, swooning strings, snaking horns, exotic male choruses with African overtones, and the sublime vocals of seminal Calypsonians such as Lionel Belasco, Roaring Lion, Babb and Williams, Houdini, Lord Executor, and Lord Invader. This collection of treasures from the Smithsonian, other archives, and commercial studios transformed a series of tracks by the set's producers into a heady taste of carnival through the decades. Calypso Calaloo is actually the aural accompaniment to Donald R. Hill's written volume Calypso Calaloo: Early Carnival Music in Trinidad, a fascinating account of that island's music pioneers, its world-famous annual carnival, and the culture that spawned it. --Elena Oumano

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

These early electrical recordings show a very different Pablo Casals from the grunting old man most people remember. At the height of his technical and musical powers, he plays these mostly charming little encores and transcriptions with exquisite musicianship and breathtaking technical command that remains outstanding today. Whether you want to hear Chopin piano pieces or Wagner arias played on the cello is another issue; there is very little real cello music on this disc. But for what is here, one could hardly imagine better performances. The transfers are outstandingly lifelike, the program very generous (76:19), the price reasonable. --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:

Amazing touch of personality.......2005-01-25
But also, the fact that this album was recorded so long ago, the original format was gramophone, I think it gives this album very important historical value, the background noise never interrupts the musics, but help listeners to get involved and place himself in the timeline.

Let Us Sing Joyfully to the Lord!.......2004-01-12
journey full of wonders and magic.
Sergiu Celibidache is the most legendary "unknown" conductor of the 20th Century. His refusal to make commercial recordings, combined with his uncompromising attitudes towards music making enforced the life of nomadic guest conductor on him for most of his career. But for those Europeans who were fortunate enough to hear him in the concert hall or on the radio, his performances
achieved mythic status. These 4 CD's, covering a good range of
the "basic repetoire" give ample reason as to why.
Celibidache's general method here is to take softer passages at
a slow, deliberate pace, allowing him ample space to sculpt each
phrase and each orchestral detail with infinite care. He slams
the forte's home with an accellerando that's like a good shot of adrenaline, yeilding ferocious climaxes. In the hands of a lesser conductor, these are mere technical tricks, but Celibidache's musical instincts are so uncanny and unerring as to achieve the most remarkable results. You will never hear a
performance of the Brahms 4th Symphony which sings so beautifully
throughout, particularly the final movement, where the point is
architecture, not cantabile. Celibidache demonstrates the two can live quite happily together here.
Likewise, Celibidache treats the humor in "Till Eulenspiegel" more as manic, mischievous glee, which is thoroughly appropriate.
Why hasn't any other conductor done this?
The juxtapositions of Prokofiev's "Classical Symphony" with Haydn's "Surprise Symphony" and Tchiakovsky's and Prokofiev's
takes on "Romeo and Juliet" prove most instructive. In the former case, Celibidache eschews the usual vision of Prokofiev
parodying Haydn in favor of a view of Prokofiev play-acting Haydn. This is altogether different. Likewise, Tchiakovsky's
"Romeo and Juliet" is heart-rendingly romantic, Prokofiev's is
heart-rendingly tragic.
Above all, it is the SINGING quality of this music that makes it stand apart. The Debussy, Britten and Busoni performances are
more than examplary... they are revelations!
This set reveals that it was Celibidache, not Furtwangler, who was the true antipode to Toscanini, as THE ultimate Romantic
conductor. The music here is unique, personal and passionate
beyond any other performances of these pieces.
You will NOT be disappointed.
Ferociously Passionate Performances.......2003-02-07

Any anthology that explores the dawn of phonograph recordings promises to be rough going: I can't discern anything meaningful from the primitive recordings by the legendary conductor Arthur Nikisch. However, everything is more clear and vivid after the implementation of the microphone in 1926, and this material occupies four of these five CDs. Still, some artists sound a bit inhibited, and it's frustrating that we're often given only one movement from concertos played by pianist Elly Ney and cellist Enrico Mainardi. However, seasoned collectors will find recordings by Victor de Sabata, Paul Van Kempen, and others that they never even knew existed, plus a great, little-known 1943 performance of Schumann's Symphonic Etudes by Geza Anda. The set is crowned by an emphatic, rugged, deeply felt complete 1941 performance of the Mozart Requiem conducted by Bruno Kittl. The clarity of the remasterings is often amazing. --David Patrick StearnsCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
Composer Frank Lewin has incorporated folk songs and popular music from various ethnic traditions in his scores and films, television programs, and plays, as well as in his opera Burning Bright (Albany Records: TROY 469/71). Each tune was adapted to the expressive requirements of the particular subject. Occasionally original music was composed in a particular style, as "source music," i.e. music heard within the action of a scene. Two eminent performers of the recent past, both now deceased, open and close this collection: violist Walter Trampler and fiddler Johnny Cunningham. In between, artists of equal merit perform music from a variety of sources. Frank Lewin has written scores for films, television programs, plays, and historical outdoor dramas. Among his concert music are song cycles and choral works, including a requiem which was first performed in 1969, during a memorial service for Robert Kennedy in the chapel of Princeton University, and Music for the ! White House, for which he conducted members of the Westminster Choir and the United States Marine Band. The composer was a member of the faculty of the Yale School of Music from 1971 to 1992, teaching composition for film. During this period he also taught the course Music in Modern Media at Columbia University's School of the Arts.World Music:
