Denis Leary's firefighter series, Rescue Me, is characterized by its delicate balance of brawn and sentiment. This CD, which collects tunes that have appeared in the first three seasons, reflects that balance, careening from the full-on rock & roll of the Von Bondies (their "C'mon C'mon" is the show's theme) and the Subways ("Oh Yeah") to the pensive, rootsy vibe of Ray Lamontagne ("All the Wild Horses") and the Devlins ("Love Is Blindness"). In his informative liner notes, Leary (who coproduces and cowrites the show in addition to starring in it) explains how he and his crew pick the songs they use. He doesn't really talk about how the songs reflect the show's take on masculinity, but the selections speak for themselves: There may be wives, girlfriends, or daughters, but Rescue Me is essentially about men. Which is perfectly fine, though it may explain why those who like to hear female voices once in a while (the Subways' bassist, Charlotte Cooper, does pipe up) are advised to look elsewhere (at one of the L Word soundtracks maybe?). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

2 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2007-07-19

I love the television series RESCUE ME, and I thought this would be the type of mellow, melancholy music heard at the closing of episodes. Instead it was mostly hard rock, and not so pleasing. I gave my copy away.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't rock.......2007-03-09

Outside of the main title (C'mon, C'mon), this CD is nothing but slow whiny depressing stuff. Was expecting a little more aggressive music. Oh, well, guess that's why IPODs sell great.

5 out of 5 stars Great Mix of Tunes.......2007-01-05

Loved the TV series and always made notes of the music. Now the soundtrack is
out with a superb choice of songs. It's in my car; great traveling music!

4 out of 5 stars Overall, pretty good........2007-01-03

I gotta say, just about every song on this CD is catchy. I loved hearing most of these songs on the show, but getting to hear them in their full length is even better. Whoever picked these tracks has a good ear for what fits with the mood of the show. That said, this is one of those CDs that's good to pick up and play now and again, but can get old pretty fast. Still worth the money though.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best soundtracks ever.......2006-11-10

I love the show, and the soundtrack is just as good. Like the show, the music is a little dark, but great.

Dres and Mista Lawnge kicked off their careers in high style as the bratty kid brothers--the, uh, proverbial Black Sheep--of the Native Tongue family. It's not a completely deserved reputation, since the pair's debut disc is a slickly produced effort with smooth rhymes and strong beats. The guest spots are kept to a minimum, though they remain choice, especially when kid MC Chi Ali raps, "pass the 40, 'cause my mother's not looking." The duo's style pulls toward humor, which they try to keep understated (in their sexual boasts), but it sometimes goes way over the top--most notably on the gangsta-rap parody "U Mean I'm Not," in which the narrator kills his sister for using his toothbrush. --Randy Silver

1 out of 5 stars A wolf ain't the word.......2007-04-11

African-Americans have come along way from the days where we were called all sort of names that dehumanized us. Now here comes the underground black people with words that were buried and now resurrected again. The artist of this cd needs to read the Scriptures because YHWH says we are wonderfully and fearfully made, we are not animals, but was given dominion to rule animals. We were made in the image of YHWH so how could we be m...........f.....? It's a shame so many are LOST and can't find their way back home.

essential early 90s hip hop that is hardcore, yet laid back. the production is stellar!!!!! just about every song is a beautiful head noddah!!!! they just don't make hip hop albums like this anymore. i could never get tired of listening to this. BAH BAH INDEED NOW!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Still as potent as it was in 1991................2006-11-14

Dres & Mr. Lawnge dropped this monster back in 91. Every song hits. Timeless Classic.

5 out of 5 stars Bah Bah Buy it.......2006-08-29

This is the least known of the Native Tounges groups but don't let that get in the way. This album is so dope and it might just be the best of the Native Tounges albums. Seriously. Every track is lyrical and production brilliance and the wordplay of Dres is just incredible. Also there are lots of hilariously great lines all over the place. No collection is complete without this masterpiece.

Top Songs- every song!

5 out of 5 stars Definite Classic.......2006-07-27

This one's gotta be in the classics archive along with "De La Soul is Dead" and "The Low End Theory". With the exception of 1 or 2 tracks, overall this is a tight album, and even though its a 1-hit CD group, this one should be in your collection if you're into the Native Tongue style (also recommend Chi Ali if you can find it!)

great CD. I actually like the accoustic version of a couple of songs but it is still a great CD.

5 out of 5 stars One multi-talented musician!.......2007-01-10

Antje's vocals are purely angelic! Her songwriting skills are outstanding. I laughed;I cried;I was happy;I was angry. It's an album that surely will spark us all into more beautiful humans. I saw her live with just her guitar and was equally enchanted.Antje Duvekot is truely a gift to the music world.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Singer and Songs - Spoiled by the bacground musicians........2006-09-11

ANTJE!. I have your other CD's - they are great. Simple acoustics, very personal and intimate. Your unique singing style is wonderful, although sometimes the recording quality is not quite as good as I would like. Unfortunately on this new CD You have been homogenised and commercialised - I am tired of electric guitars and percussionists that dominate beautiful songs and wonderful voices.
Antje - if you are going this way - turn down the volume on those background people - I don't buy your music to hear them dominate your wondrous lyrics and special voice.
Please do not get done over!

4 out of 5 stars "Something's lost, but something's gained...".......2006-08-05

This CD contains both studio re-recordings of earlier works ("Judas", "Dandelion", "Anna", etc.) as well as new songs.

I have some sympathy for Ben Fassett's earlier comment. Those who have heard Antje Duvekot's earlier works ("Little Peppermints" and "Boys, Flowers, Miles") may be surprised by her sound in this CD.

I was fortunate enough to hear her live in concert the other night, and was completely impressed by her presence and performance. Her earlier CDs convey the power of her solo performance; think Patty Griffin's "Living with Ghosts" as a comparable example. Paradoxically, less is more.

This CD, on the other hand, adds string arrangements and other instruments to her voice and guitar. I think that some of the raw emotion and poignancy can get lost in the production, and her voice can occasionally be muted. In her concert, she performed some of the new songs from this CD, and they were very much in the style of her earlier CDs.

The earlier CDs also reveal her live demeanor which is quite shy, humorous and self-deprecating. You should really try to see her in person if you have a chance.

On the other hand, this CD represents more Antje Duvekot, and that is never a bad thing. It is still well worth the purchase, but consider also "Boys, Flowers, Miles" to hear the power of her solo voice.

5 out of 5 stars A real accomplishment........2006-07-31

Antje's voice is simply beautiful and her lyrics are astonishing. It's very rare that I go completely ga-ga over a singer/songwriter, but Antje has me. There isn't a single track on this CD that I skip. The songs stand equally in their studio produced versions as they do stripped down live. I'd strongly encourage you to have both experiences. :-)

5 out of 5 stars Juxtaposition Junction, How I Love Your Function.......2006-11-10

First off, this CD is stereo-channelled (I think? maybe not) intensity, increasing exponentially with amplification. Mood music for breaking through that last layer of existential despair and finding fleeting fulfillment amidst the harshness oft-offered by reality.

Both parties involved have been peddling their wares at the edge of structure in their respective 'genres' (for you pre-postmodern dialecticians) for a while (Braxton in 'free jazz' for 40-odd years, Wolf Eyes in 'i dont know let's call it noise' for 10-odd). Hearing the two playing together (on a live set in Canada in 2005 . . . or 2004?) could be the germ for some fantastic theories regarding the dissolving of (aforementioned) 'genre', or just the rad similarities between free thinkers, wheree'er they may hang their tasselled cap or AC/DC tour shirt . . .

This set is awesome, historical, mind-numbing (who needs a mind to listen to music?), and deep like a very deep puddle of iridescent oil mixed with mud old and new. If you enjoy either of these artists (though Anthony falls back a bit in the mix sometimes), this CD will make you grimace in enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars A Nearly Imposible Hybrid of the Industrial and Avant-Garde.......2006-09-04

Wolf Eyes - The pulsing and progression of impossibly haunting sounds, musically crafted and structured to elongate the tension of hearing the raw sounds of metal against metal; unatural sounds fed to the natural human ear.

Anthony Braxton - Sophisticated, forward-thinking genius music; the prodigious performance of all imaginable reed instruments combined with concept-filled, insanity-ridden pulses, squeals, and howls.

Neither artists are for the faint of heart, or those with short attention spans, but never would anybody have thought to see both these artists on the same album cover together. Victo presents: Wolf Eyes and Anthony Braxton - Black Vomit.

This 2006 release is completed by only two tracks - one scaling past the 25 minute mark, and the other barely reaching eight minutes. A short release, sure, but one with absolutely no extra fat or preservatives. This is an unlikely combination, though it is willing to take you on a journey that is both expressive and odd; the perfect reaction to a musical work.

I will describe the first track for you to give you an idea of the atmosphere this album sets:

The first track, "The Mangler", is a slowly-progressing piece comprised of approximately five movements - each more insane than the last. The piece begins with the clashing and clanking of different metallic, factory-like sounds, building one upon another, in unison, in tune. Braxton's sax comes in and saves the audience from sheer madness which would have been caused with over-exposure to this noise, to bring us a more melodic, more animated sound. But no dice - it quickly turns into sheer chaos again, with Braxton squealing his face off and creating melted colors sound, lacking in harmonics of any sort. The clanking grows LOUDER - and then a silence. And then some noise - some that is slightly too soft, to only be followed with an EXPLOSION of sound from every direction imaginable; Braxton is wailing with his different reed instruments, as if there is no tomorrow, as if all the world's fears have been placed into one large, expansive sphere of sound. The two unique artists appear to be playing off of each other, responding to the madness created by the previous person. And then the sound drops. We regain conciousnes, but the music has died. We've returned home, and are probably unsure of what just happened.

Want to experience this journey? Want to feel things that you won't feel from many other albums? This is the album for you, then. Put it on your CD deck, make sure to have fantastic speakers (omni-directional drivers are preferable) and dim the lights. Close your eyes and prepare to be terrified.

This '95 follow up to his now impossible-to-find debut is a sure bet for what Paul does best: tell stories with characters and images that fascinate with repeated listening. He has a high, reedy voice, and he's remarkably adept at vocal phrasing. The record has a clean, acoustic folk-rock sound, and when he takes the most chances, as on "King of Seventh Avenue" and "Last at the Table," he's most compelling. "Last Call," on the other hand, is a revelatory moment of simplicity, and helps make this one of the '90s freshest singer-songwriter albums. --Roy Francis Kasten

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ellis Paul - "Stories".......2007-03-09

I first listened to this great singer/songwriter out of curiosity because his name is the same as one of my family members...only reversed. I am so glad I didn't miss out. Where has he been all my life?

5 out of 5 stars The album to buy after the new double-disc "Essentials".......2006-10-18

So, we discovered Ellis Paul as a result of the Jim Carrey movie, "Me, Myself and Irene".

That movie featured his song, "The World Ain't Slowin' Down" in key moments of the film. My wife Rachael had to know who the song was by, and so we picked up the soundtrack, and after she heard it enough times it was time to pick up the album it came from, "Translucent Soul".

When it turned out that "Translucent Soul" was a great album, it was time to start picking up his other albums one by one. Each new album that came along didn't disappoint, but it was "Stories" that particularly caught my ear.

Ellis Paul is classified as Folk, and while that genre may have a negative connotation with the younger generation, maybe it would be better categorized as "Songs with substance."

Think of Ellis Paul as a Bob Dylanesque style songwriter with a much better singing voice.

I often research albums before I buy them, but Ellis is one of the few artists I can name that will have me buying every new CD before I hear a note of it. He has consistantly been THAT good.

His brand new double-disc "Essentials" is a magnificent starting point for people to hear what he's all about, and if you decide that you are hooked too? I recommend "Stories" next.

ROCK!

Glenn Case

5 out of 5 stars Grows stronger with each listen.......2003-05-03

I bought this album in casette form many years ago and it was my first introduction to the bard of folk--Mr Paul. All things being the same is (I believe) about the wonderful town of Atlanta
(He mentions Eddie Owen of Attic Fame---"All her friends are nothing more than strangers,
Whose names are just words on a face .
If they bumped into her out on a sidewalk on some Sunday,
They wouldn't recognize her outside of the place".
"3000 Miles" is the title of Ellis's first DVD!---it's also a song he plays often at concerts. A classic! "Here she is" is about his (then) wife---How's about this for the start of a love song--->"If you could paint her, she'd be a Picasso.
She's got a few things out of place.
Like when she smiles, it's slightly out of line"
"Autobiography of a Pistol" I didn't like the music to this song when I first heard it---but it has grown on me over the years; the lyrics are awesome--->"Some things they never tell you when you're riding the assembly line.
Like who'll be the hands to hold you and what's their state of mind - -"
"River" is about River Phoenix, and it too grows on ya
"Last at The Table" was the song that converted me to a fully fledged fan of the man---its acoustic, but it rocks--->"Hello, Mr. Bureaucrat. You pick who's thin -- you pick who's fat"
"Last Call" is a quiet song, finger-picked and lush about a lady who works in a bar--->"The excuses get weaker as the stories get tall.
You step off with the wrong foot, the drunk fool at the ball."
" Who Killed John Lennon?": says it all--->"And each time he's televised, he kills him again.
It's the prize that he wanted when he loaded the gun.
And each time he's mentioned, murder is done"
"King of Seventh Avenue"---inspired by a short story by Ethan Canin (Emperor of the Air) about the proverbial guy on the ledge--->"I hear the crowd all ask for jumping,
While the cops all ask for calm.
Even the pigeons think I'm something,
The whole city is in my palms"
"Looking for My Friends" hes out looking for his friends because she left him--->She left the note in the sleeve of my coat, that was not nice -- I called her on the phone, the voice that spoke, it was cold, it was hard as ice. I tried to speak,
the connection was weak 'cause I was talking to a machine.
She said, "If this is you, we're totally through,"
and that's the last of her I've seen"
"Don't Breathe"--->one of Ellis's most plaintive songs
--->"Did I tell you then?
These are moments whole lifetimes are built on"
Thats the end!

4 out of 5 stars Some Great Stories, Some Bad..........2001-03-26

Ok, Ellis Paul is Boston's Folk-pop patriarch. Everyone who likes the genre has this album. With songs like "The King of Seventh Avenue" and "Here She Is", it's easy to see why. These songs alone deserve the 4 star rating.

Even so, the cd lacks depth. "I Shot John Lennon" is a waste of plastic. In it, Paul attempts to assassinate talk show trash. What could be worse than wasting one's time watching talk shows? You guessed it: a song about wasting time watching talk shows. "Autobiography of a Pistol" is so ridiculous it has become part of the stand up routine of Rick Jenkins (one of Boston's best comedians).

If you like the genre, you probably already have this or have a friend who does. Definitely check it out, but remember to program your cd player and avoid the god-awful filler songs.

5 out of 5 stars Still my fave.......2000-12-09

I think it's safe to call me an Ellis Paul devotee. I have all his albums, having first discovered him on the fabulous WBOS when I was living in Boston. But Stories remains my favorite. I can listen to it over and over and it never gets stale. Ellis' lyrics are so beautiful and succinct that they make you ache. King of Seventh Avenue, Autobiography of a Pistol, Who Killed John Lennon, all incredible songs, but I think 3000 Miles may be among my most favorite songs ever. If you've heard of Ellis Paul and are looking for a good cd to try out, here it is and welcome to the fan club!

Proudly waving the flag for tradtional HEAVY METAL, Sweden's WOLF manifests the unholy mix of Maiden meets Mercyful Fate meets super sized balls. Expecting nothing less than blood, sweat and beers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Uncompromising METAL!.......2007-03-17

Remember when you could say you listened to heavy metal and people knew exactly what you were talking about? These days it's all about categories - black metal, death metal, progressive metal, neoclassical progressive power metal with operatic vocals and blah blah blah. Forget classifications, Sweden's Wolf plays the kind of METAL that has you raising your fist and banging your head in about 2 seconds flat. This isn't tongue-in-cheek, 3 Inches of Blood style retro metal either. Wolf (and their American counterparts in Widow, Pharaoh, and Icarus Witch) worship at the altar of METAL. Trends be damned, Wolf delivers scorching old school HEAVY METAL that pays homage to the legends - Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and the rest of the legendary NWOBHM movement while at the same time embracing the speed and energy of modern bands like Dragonforce and Children of Bodom.

The band's 2006 album The Black Flame has to be a contender for the year's best metal album. I thought their last album (Evil Star) was the band's best work, but listening to the Black Flame is like strapping yourself into the electric chair! This whole album is speed, power, fury, and straight-up metal from start to finish. It's a bit more melodic than their previous works, but it's the kind of melodic touch that just makes it easier to pound your fist and yell along (sample the song At the Graveyard and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about). This is the third near-perfect album in a row from these guys. If there's a weak moment on the Black Flame, I haven't found it.

If you like METAL and are not dead, you need to hear Wolf. If you are dead, then the Black Flame may just reanimate you!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible old school metal!!!!.......2006-12-21

Wow!!!! Wolf comes with another great album, full of excellent guitar work, with more melody and top notch musicianship. Check out Wolf, one of the best bands around right now!!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!!!!!.......2006-12-01

Old school heavy metal, but very, very goood!!!! These guys are incredible, with refreshing sound in their own, excellent guitar riffs and the vocals near perfect to this type of music. Recommended if you like the retro-heavy metal of the 80's.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the modern retro 80's metal bands.......2006-10-18

There are a many great modern-day retrospective old school metal bands that are just starting to catch their groove in the new century. Top contenders include: Cage, Benedictum, Astral Doors, Winter's Bane, Icarus Witch, Pharoah, and... of course, Wolf. Some may argue that the 80's metal genre has been played out for originality, and maybe that's a given. If so, what you do with the "given" is what makes the difference, and Wolf delivers in spades (and CLAWS!) with The Black Flame.

With their new album, Wolf has tossed their hat in the ring to compete as best of the new retro. The Black Flame is a full-on metal assault from the old days, somewhere in the old-school Maiden/Priest vein (while sounding like neither) with an accelerated, modern day tempo. The high-point being that Wolf sounds original while clearly showing influences from their youth. So, don't expect any copy-cats because this band can't be described that way. It's just old school metal played the way it should be in the Year-of-Our-Lord, 2006.

The songwriting is superb at points and really good throughout, each band member standing out in their respected crafts. The singer can be a high-pitch air raid siren when he wants to be, but also delivers in a raspier, yet still melodic style reminiscent of classic 80s metal bands like Queensryche, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest. The guitar solos are frequent and blistering to the ears, the bass-lines are solid and follow their own path without straying too far, and the eclectic, and quite frenetic, drummer never stops to take a breath (without being repetitive).

The most attractive part to me is this band's eerie similarities to the obscure 80s Danish band Witchcross. My old high-school friends and I always wished Witchcross would reunite and re-capture the magic and now they have. Except, as far as I know, no one in Wolf has any connections to the guys who played in Witchcross back in the days. The fact that they are from neighboring Sweden makes me wonder. It's all Scandinavia, right?

Anyway, Wolf just keeps better with each album and with The Black Flame they've reached the upper echelon of modern metal bands. Don't miss out on this gem, one of the best albums of 2006.

5 out of 5 stars A Trad/Old School metal masterpiece.......2006-10-10

I have been a Wolf fan for some time, and have the previous three CDs, but this might just be my favourite. A slight change from Evil Star, with more melody in the songs, and some nice harmony guitar, my favourite tracks at the moment are 'I will Kill Again' and 'Demon'.
It's great to see a band producing excellent heavy metal. Yes, heavy metal, but with it's own slant in the songs, enhanced by Niklas' distinctive voice. Sure the lineup has changed, but this hasn't drastically changed the signature sound.
A well produced sound completes the picture.
This is only the fourth cd from Wolf since 1999, but, unlike some bands, they have ensured that each cd is a quality release.
I would recommend this to anyone who likes quality trad heavy metal, and everyone else should at least go to the Wolf website (www.wolf,nu) and download the first track from their downloads section to see what they are missing.

5 out of 5 stars The Soul of A Serial Killer Put To Music........2007-02-09

That's what this AMAZING recording from Mayhem sounds like. As if all the violence and insanity from their past were somehow transformed into this intense Black Metal. You can talk about singers for this band all you want, in my opinion the work Maniac has done on this and Chimera will stand the test of time. I'm sure we'd all love to hear Dead on every Mayhem recording, but sadly that's not going to happen. The info I have is that Maniac will not be singing on the new one this year; big mistake.
At only 24 minutes and 42 seconds (on my counter), Wolf's Lair Abyss will invade your mind like a mental demon bent on the pure corruption of your soul. If this isn't in your collection, may you be forced to rot in an afterlife poisoned with nothing but American Idol retards for eternity.
5 STARS!!! HAIL! HAIL! HAIL! MAYHEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Mayhem's declaration of HATE.......2005-03-07

Did you ever make a declaration of love? How about a declaration of hate? A declaration of hate adressed to the whole humanity? Why am I saying this? Because this album is the most eloquent acoustic expression of hate, anger and misanthropy.

Some of you are gonna tell me that I should look for the "most hatefull" album in discographies of bands like Napalm Death, Sepultura, Suffocation or Slayer. While, to those bands, the hate is the violent decomposure of violence, to Mayhem, it appears as a more intimate feeling.

I was knocked down when I first listened to this album. The 4 songs are like a hurricane...I haven't sensed so much anger spitted in humanity's face than in that short interlude from Ancient Skin, when Maniac declares with profetic, clean voice "I've captured the moment given, I denied the sickening love, turned to the purity of anger."

Al the 4 songs have an incredible weight, given by the intensity of the riffs and the heavy, very good drumming and a speed unexlored before, even by Mayhem. There is one song, Ancient Skin, in wich the band says "This is who we are". The song starts very fast, and a feeling of "deja-vu" takes place, but, after 1 minute, Hellhammer rises the tempo of the drumming, the speed reaches an unexpected high level, simultaneously with the transition to the very dense web of riffs (typical to this Wolf's Lair Abyss), preparing for Maniac's entrance. His part consist of the most violent vocals ever recorded on a black metal album.

This album fascinated me since the first audition. The intro - the breathing of a septic body and the trumpets annnouncing a new Era (in black metal), followed by the unleashing of high speed and immense brutallity and a very good instrumental technique.

This is one amazon black metal release...

4 out of 5 stars Short and sweet.......2004-12-10

This CD only has 5 song on it, and the first track is just noise, so that leaves about 22 mins or so of actual music. Still, this album comes off great. The first real song, 'I Am the Labyrinth', starts off with a furious drum roll, kicking off the pace for the entire album. The guitars are razor thin and sinister, and Maniacs vocals are just totally evil, as always (check out the break down in 'Ancient Skin' for some truely inhuman and demonic sounding vocals).
As usual, there are no bad songs on this CD, though 'Ancient Skin' isn't the strongest Mayhem track. Seriously worth the money, even if its a short album. This is REAL Black Metal!

4 out of 5 stars They're still going strong!.......2004-09-02

Being that this is the first Mayhem album without Euronymous, this is a fairly interesting one. This is proof that even without Mayhem's former "leader," they can still manage to pump out some blistering and worthy black metal. This isn't as raw as Deathcrush or the legendary DMDS; the production is much more clean, dry and sharp. Maniac is back on vocals, and to say the least, his style is much different than it was on Deathcrush. Instead of his former Deathcrush style screams, he's got more of a guttural and gritty shriek going on.

Many, and I mean many, will be put off by Maniac's vocals. Maniac almost sounds like he's got cicadas and beetles in his throat while he sings from his stomach. Some people may pick up on his singing right away, others may find it to be an acquired taste, and then the rest will despise his singing. At times Maniac's singing reminds me of Smeagol from Lord of the Rings, but I still manage to enjoy it when I'm not thinking of those big bug eyes and that voice that calls out for his precious. Blasphemer puts on a satisfactory performance, but his guitar sounds a little rusty and anhydrous...but it does the job decently. Some of the material sounds rather DMDS-ish (Ancient Skin, I Am Thy Labyrinth).

The drumming is rather brisk, but it's much more varied than what I expected from Mayhem - instead of the majority of just blast beats there is a lot more interchanging between double bass, snare, and cymbals. Of course this is Mayhem, so all of the songs with the exception of the opening instrumental are fast and tenacious. The opening track is a bit too long, using a clip in length of a minute or less would have done the job instead of almost two and a half minutes of thick swirling wind sounds accompanied by some static. Not only that, but this is far too short (I've seen the price on this album going for as much as a regular CD, which I find to be a tad ridiculous).

It's a worthy purchase for sure, but I have my doubts about it being worth the amount of an album, which uses up all of the space available on the CD. Get it sometime, but don't put it ahead of a kick ass full-length that you might be looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful comeback.......2004-02-24

This is the first release from the current Mayhem lineup (Maniac, Hellhammer, Necrobutcher, Blasphemer)and it is a strong return. The production is excellent and the songs are great. Hellhammer's drumming is insane, Maniac's vocals are evil, Blasphemer's guitar style is very good and he shows more range in his skills than Euronymous. I think the length of the cd and five songs are just right, short and to the point. This is a band with alot to prove and they show plenty of anger and energy on Wolf's Lair Abyss. This is the best studio release of current lineup and I would also get the live Mediolanum Capta Est cd as well. That also has great production, they deliver the songs with the same ferocity and they're better now in concert than back in the days of Dead & Euronymous. The instruments are played better and the the band just sound so much more cohesive and together as a unit than in the past. Make it your duty to get Wolf's Lair Abyss and Mediolanum Capta Est. Listen to them both and give me a nod if you found the review helpful. If you didn't well then drop dead! =)

Yes Guitar Wolf are a japanese punk rock band and yes, they are fantastic as this collection will show.

5 out of 5 stars History.......2006-01-28

One of the reasons we even started SF Burning Online was because we were all Guitar Wolf fans. I saw Keith Martin at a Guitar Wolf gig in San Francisco one night, and this website was born. When I hear songs like "Missile Me" and "Wild Zero" I remember that feeling of spontaneity and creativity. We were lucky to see some of the last concerts they did with Billy. We were lucky to do an interview with Guitar Wolf a few years ago. We even had some video of Billy two weeks before he died in March 2005. Now that he is gone, these songs have never sounded so solid. Many people are wrong to think that Guitar Wolf is a Japanese version of American rock and punk rock. When you hear songs like "Invader Ace" and "Kawasaki ZII 750 Rocknroll" you know the opposite is true. Yes, now English-speaking bands have covered these songs. Guitar Wolf's influence will be felt forever. This is a great collection and tribute to the band that has been awesome for twenty years. The fans have picked their favorites. Now you have them!

4 out of 5 stars Boston's first folk supergroup?.......2002-11-11

I was a DJ on 88.9-FM WERS in Boston from 1988-1991. While I mostly worked on the Jazz Fusion program "Fusebox", I frequently hosted the morning folk show, "Coffeehouse". Brian Doser was a audio production professor at Emerson College at the time and frequented the studio. Ellis Paul, pretty much unknown at the time, also came in often to perform. Brian Doser, Ellis Paul along with Jon Svetky and Jim Infantino, mixed (and I believe did some recording) "End Construction" in WERS' music studio, Boston's first all digital recording studio. This also happens to be where Ellis Paul recorded his "Am I Home" album -- another historical recording in Boston folk history.

All of us who worked at the station knew something special was happening in Boston's folk scene and this record was about to show us how. The result really opened the doors for many artists in the scene and Rounder Records was about to listen. Less than two years later, Ellis Paul was signed and touring nationally. It was a pretty neat time.

While the record is not perfect -- it lacks some professional mixing polish. It's a terrific time capsule recording -- taking folks back to when contemporary folk in Boston was a diverse mix of influences. It was also when folk was just "folk" in small coffeehouses that were meeting places to share ideas and music and NOT yuppified hangouts like Starbucks.

If you're a Boston folk fan, this is a must have. The songs are diverse in styles -- some funny, some sad. But mostly, it's just great music by four guys who kickstarted Boston's blossoming folk scene. Guess you could call them Boston folk's version of Clapton and Cream. Okay...too many metaphors.

5 out of 5 stars This guy may have sold his soul for his ability.......2002-01-30

I was in a dirty bar in New Orleans, and this guy was on stage. When he started playing the guitar behind his head, my friend told me that some blues guitar players sell their souls to play that good. As he finished his sentence, Kipori, who was 20 feet away and playing some riff, looked me straight in the eye, smiled and nodded, then continued his riff for another few minutes. I stood there stunned. He couldn't have heard me......

This is it, he plays his guitar like you think others are playing after you've had quite a few.
