Denis Leary's firefighter series, Rescue Me, is characterized by its delicate balance of brawn and sentiment. This CD, which collects tunes that have appeared in the first three seasons, reflects that balance, careening from the full-on rock & roll of the Von Bondies (their "C'mon C'mon" is the show's theme) and the Subways ("Oh Yeah") to the pensive, rootsy vibe of Ray Lamontagne ("All the Wild Horses") and the Devlins ("Love Is Blindness"). In his informative liner notes, Leary (who coproduces and cowrites the show in addition to starring in it) explains how he and his crew pick the songs they use. He doesn't really talk about how the songs reflect the show's take on masculinity, but the selections speak for themselves: There may be wives, girlfriends, or daughters, but Rescue Me is essentially about men. Which is perfectly fine, though it may explain why those who like to hear female voices once in a while (the Subways' bassist, Charlotte Cooper, does pipe up) are advised to look elsewhere (at one of the L Word soundtracks maybe?). --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Dres and Mista Lawnge kicked off their careers in high style as the bratty kid brothers--the, uh, proverbial Black Sheep--of the Native Tongue family. It's not a completely deserved reputation, since the pair's debut disc is a slickly produced effort with smooth rhymes and strong beats. The guest spots are kept to a minimum, though they remain choice, especially when kid MC Chi Ali raps, "pass the 40, 'cause my mother's not looking." The duo's style pulls toward humor, which they try to keep understated (in their sexual boasts), but it sometimes goes way over the top--most notably on the gangsta-rap parody "U Mean I'm Not," in which the narrator kills his sister for using his toothbrush. --Randy SilverCustomer Reviews:

"Something's lost, but something's gained...".......2006-08-05
I have some sympathy for Ben Fassett's earlier comment. Those who have heard Antje Duvekot's earlier works ("Little Peppermints" and "Boys, Flowers, Miles") may be surprised by her sound in this CD.
I was fortunate enough to hear her live in concert the other night, and was completely impressed by her presence and performance. Her earlier CDs convey the power of her solo performance; think Patty Griffin's "Living with Ghosts" as a comparable example. Paradoxically, less is more.
This CD, on the other hand, adds string arrangements and other instruments to her voice and guitar. I think that some of the raw emotion and poignancy can get lost in the production, and her voice can occasionally be muted. In her concert, she performed some of the new songs from this CD, and they were very much in the style of her earlier CDs.
The earlier CDs also reveal her live demeanor which is quite shy, humorous and self-deprecating. You should really try to see her in person if you have a chance.
On the other hand, this CD represents more Antje Duvekot, and that is never a bad thing. It is still well worth the purchase, but consider also "Boys, Flowers, Miles" to hear the power of her solo voice.

Juxtaposition Junction, How I Love Your Function.......2006-11-10
Both parties involved have been peddling their wares at the edge of structure in their respective 'genres' (for you pre-postmodern dialecticians) for a while (Braxton in 'free jazz' for 40-odd years, Wolf Eyes in 'i dont know let's call it noise' for 10-odd). Hearing the two playing together (on a live set in Canada in 2005 . . . or 2004?) could be the germ for some fantastic theories regarding the dissolving of (aforementioned) 'genre', or just the rad similarities between free thinkers, wheree'er they may hang their tasselled cap or AC/DC tour shirt . . .
This set is awesome, historical, mind-numbing (who needs a mind to listen to music?), and deep like a very deep puddle of iridescent oil mixed with mud old and new. If you enjoy either of these artists (though Anthony falls back a bit in the mix sometimes), this CD will make you grimace in enjoyment.
A Nearly Imposible Hybrid of the Industrial and Avant-Garde.......2006-09-04
Anthony Braxton - Sophisticated, forward-thinking genius music; the prodigious performance of all imaginable reed instruments combined with concept-filled, insanity-ridden pulses, squeals, and howls.
Neither artists are for the faint of heart, or those with short attention spans, but never would anybody have thought to see both these artists on the same album cover together. Victo presents: Wolf Eyes and Anthony Braxton - Black Vomit.
This 2006 release is completed by only two tracks - one scaling past the 25 minute mark, and the other barely reaching eight minutes. A short release, sure, but one with absolutely no extra fat or preservatives. This is an unlikely combination, though it is willing to take you on a journey that is both expressive and odd; the perfect reaction to a musical work.
I will describe the first track for you to give you an idea of the atmosphere this album sets:
The first track, "The Mangler", is a slowly-progressing piece comprised of approximately five movements - each more insane than the last. The piece begins with the clashing and clanking of different metallic, factory-like sounds, building one upon another, in unison, in tune. Braxton's sax comes in and saves the audience from sheer madness which would have been caused with over-exposure to this noise, to bring us a more melodic, more animated sound. But no dice - it quickly turns into sheer chaos again, with Braxton squealing his face off and creating melted colors sound, lacking in harmonics of any sort. The clanking grows LOUDER - and then a silence. And then some noise - some that is slightly too soft, to only be followed with an EXPLOSION of sound from every direction imaginable; Braxton is wailing with his different reed instruments, as if there is no tomorrow, as if all the world's fears have been placed into one large, expansive sphere of sound. The two unique artists appear to be playing off of each other, responding to the madness created by the previous person. And then the sound drops. We regain conciousnes, but the music has died. We've returned home, and are probably unsure of what just happened.
Want to experience this journey? Want to feel things that you won't feel from many other albums? This is the album for you, then. Put it on your CD deck, make sure to have fantastic speakers (omni-directional drivers are preferable) and dim the lights. Close your eyes and prepare to be terrified.

This '95 follow up to his now impossible-to-find debut is a sure bet for what Paul does best: tell stories with characters and images that fascinate with repeated listening. He has a high, reedy voice, and he's remarkably adept at vocal phrasing. The record has a clean, acoustic folk-rock sound, and when he takes the most chances, as on "King of Seventh Avenue" and "Last at the Table," he's most compelling. "Last Call," on the other hand, is a revelatory moment of simplicity, and helps make this one of the '90s freshest singer-songwriter albums. --Roy Francis KastenCustomer Reviews:
Ellis Paul - "Stories".......2007-03-09
The album to buy after the new double-disc "Essentials".......2006-10-18
That movie featured his song, "The World Ain't Slowin' Down" in key moments of the film. My wife Rachael had to know who the song was by, and so we picked up the soundtrack, and after she heard it enough times it was time to pick up the album it came from, "Translucent Soul".
When it turned out that "Translucent Soul" was a great album, it was time to start picking up his other albums one by one. Each new album that came along didn't disappoint, but it was "Stories" that particularly caught my ear.
Ellis Paul is classified as Folk, and while that genre may have a negative connotation with the younger generation, maybe it would be better categorized as "Songs with substance."
Think of Ellis Paul as a Bob Dylanesque style songwriter with a much better singing voice.
I often research albums before I buy them, but Ellis is one of the few artists I can name that will have me buying every new CD before I hear a note of it. He has consistantly been THAT good.
His brand new double-disc "Essentials" is a magnificent starting point for people to hear what he's all about, and if you decide that you are hooked too? I recommend "Stories" next.
ROCK!

Grows stronger with each listen.......2003-05-03
(He mentions Eddie Owen of Attic Fame---"All her friends are nothing more than strangers,
Whose names are just words on a face .
If they bumped into her out on a sidewalk on some Sunday,
They wouldn't recognize her outside of the place".
"3000 Miles" is the title of Ellis's first DVD!---it's also a song he plays often at concerts. A classic! "Here she is" is about his (then) wife---How's about this for the start of a love song--->"If you could paint her, she'd be a Picasso.
She's got a few things out of place.
Like when she smiles, it's slightly out of line"
"Autobiography of a Pistol" I didn't like the music to this song when I first heard it---but it has grown on me over the years; the lyrics are awesome--->"Some things they never tell you when you're riding the assembly line.
Like who'll be the hands to hold you and what's their state of mind - -"
"River" is about River Phoenix, and it too grows on ya
"Last at The Table" was the song that converted me to a fully fledged fan of the man---its acoustic, but it rocks--->"Hello, Mr. Bureaucrat. You pick who's thin -- you pick who's fat"
"Last Call" is a quiet song, finger-picked and lush about a lady who works in a bar--->"The excuses get weaker as the stories get tall.
You step off with the wrong foot, the drunk fool at the ball."
" Who Killed John Lennon?": says it all--->"And each time he's televised, he kills him again.
It's the prize that he wanted when he loaded the gun.
And each time he's mentioned, murder is done"
"King of Seventh Avenue"---inspired by a short story by Ethan Canin (Emperor of the Air) about the proverbial guy on the ledge--->"I hear the crowd all ask for jumping,
While the cops all ask for calm.
Even the pigeons think I'm something,
The whole city is in my palms"
"Looking for My Friends" hes out looking for his friends because she left him--->She left the note in the sleeve of my coat, that was not nice -- I called her on the phone, the voice that spoke, it was cold, it was hard as ice. I tried to speak,
the connection was weak 'cause I was talking to a machine.
She said, "If this is you, we're totally through,"
and that's the last of her I've seen"
"Don't Breathe"--->one of Ellis's most plaintive songs
--->"Did I tell you then?
These are moments whole lifetimes are built on"
Thats the end!
Some Great Stories, Some Bad..........2001-03-26
Even so, the cd lacks depth. "I Shot John Lennon" is a waste of plastic. In it, Paul attempts to assassinate talk show trash. What could be worse than wasting one's time watching talk shows? You guessed it: a song about wasting time watching talk shows. "Autobiography of a Pistol" is so ridiculous it has become part of the stand up routine of Rick Jenkins (one of Boston's best comedians).
If you like the genre, you probably already have this or have a friend who does. Definitely check it out, but remember to program your cd player and avoid the god-awful filler songs.
Still my fave.......2000-12-09

Uncompromising METAL!.......2007-03-17
The band's 2006 album The Black Flame has to be a contender for the year's best metal album. I thought their last album (Evil Star) was the band's best work, but listening to the Black Flame is like strapping yourself into the electric chair! This whole album is speed, power, fury, and straight-up metal from start to finish. It's a bit more melodic than their previous works, but it's the kind of melodic touch that just makes it easier to pound your fist and yell along (sample the song At the Graveyard and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about). This is the third near-perfect album in a row from these guys. If there's a weak moment on the Black Flame, I haven't found it.
If you like METAL and are not dead, you need to hear Wolf. If you are dead, then the Black Flame may just reanimate you!
Incredible old school metal!!!!.......2006-12-21
Wow!!!! Wolf comes with another great album, full of excellent guitar work, with more melody and top notch musicianship. Check out Wolf, one of the best bands around right now!!
Incredible!!!!!.......2006-12-01
Old school heavy metal, but very, very goood!!!! These guys are incredible, with refreshing sound in their own, excellent guitar riffs and the vocals near perfect to this type of music. Recommended if you like the retro-heavy metal of the 80's.
Best of the modern retro 80's metal bands.......2006-10-18
With their new album, Wolf has tossed their hat in the ring to compete as best of the new retro. The Black Flame is a full-on metal assault from the old days, somewhere in the old-school Maiden/Priest vein (while sounding like neither) with an accelerated, modern day tempo. The high-point being that Wolf sounds original while clearly showing influences from their youth. So, don't expect any copy-cats because this band can't be described that way. It's just old school metal played the way it should be in the Year-of-Our-Lord, 2006.
The songwriting is superb at points and really good throughout, each band member standing out in their respected crafts. The singer can be a high-pitch air raid siren when he wants to be, but also delivers in a raspier, yet still melodic style reminiscent of classic 80s metal bands like Queensryche, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest. The guitar solos are frequent and blistering to the ears, the bass-lines are solid and follow their own path without straying too far, and the eclectic, and quite frenetic, drummer never stops to take a breath (without being repetitive).
The most attractive part to me is this band's eerie similarities to the obscure 80s Danish band Witchcross. My old high-school friends and I always wished Witchcross would reunite and re-capture the magic and now they have. Except, as far as I know, no one in Wolf has any connections to the guys who played in Witchcross back in the days. The fact that they are from neighboring Sweden makes me wonder. It's all Scandinavia, right?
Anyway, Wolf just keeps better with each album and with The Black Flame they've reached the upper echelon of modern metal bands. Don't miss out on this gem, one of the best albums of 2006.
A Trad/Old School metal masterpiece.......2006-10-10
It's great to see a band producing excellent heavy metal. Yes, heavy metal, but with it's own slant in the songs, enhanced by Niklas' distinctive voice. Sure the lineup has changed, but this hasn't drastically changed the signature sound.
A well produced sound completes the picture.
This is only the fourth cd from Wolf since 1999, but, unlike some bands, they have ensured that each cd is a quality release.
I would recommend this to anyone who likes quality trad heavy metal, and everyone else should at least go to the Wolf website (www.wolf,nu) and download the first track from their downloads section to see what they are missing.

Mayhem's declaration of HATE.......2005-03-07
Some of you are gonna tell me that I should look for the "most hatefull" album in discographies of bands like Napalm Death, Sepultura, Suffocation or Slayer. While, to those bands, the hate is the violent decomposure of violence, to Mayhem, it appears as a more intimate feeling.
I was knocked down when I first listened to this album. The 4 songs are like a hurricane...I haven't sensed so much anger spitted in humanity's face than in that short interlude from Ancient Skin, when Maniac declares with profetic, clean voice "I've captured the moment given, I denied the sickening love, turned to the purity of anger."
Al the 4 songs have an incredible weight, given by the intensity of the riffs and the heavy, very good drumming and a speed unexlored before, even by Mayhem. There is one song, Ancient Skin, in wich the band says "This is who we are". The song starts very fast, and a feeling of "deja-vu" takes place, but, after 1 minute, Hellhammer rises the tempo of the drumming, the speed reaches an unexpected high level, simultaneously with the transition to the very dense web of riffs (typical to this Wolf's Lair Abyss), preparing for Maniac's entrance. His part consist of the most violent vocals ever recorded on a black metal album.
This album fascinated me since the first audition. The intro - the breathing of a septic body and the trumpets annnouncing a new Era (in black metal), followed by the unleashing of high speed and immense brutallity and a very good instrumental technique.
This is one amazon black metal release...
Short and sweet.......2004-12-10
As usual, there are no bad songs on this CD, though 'Ancient Skin' isn't the strongest Mayhem track. Seriously worth the money, even if its a short album. This is REAL Black Metal!
They're still going strong!.......2004-09-02
Many, and I mean many, will be put off by Maniac's vocals. Maniac almost sounds like he's got cicadas and beetles in his throat while he sings from his stomach. Some people may pick up on his singing right away, others may find it to be an acquired taste, and then the rest will despise his singing. At times Maniac's singing reminds me of Smeagol from Lord of the Rings, but I still manage to enjoy it when I'm not thinking of those big bug eyes and that voice that calls out for his precious. Blasphemer puts on a satisfactory performance, but his guitar sounds a little rusty and anhydrous...but it does the job decently. Some of the material sounds rather DMDS-ish (Ancient Skin, I Am Thy Labyrinth).
The drumming is rather brisk, but it's much more varied than what I expected from Mayhem - instead of the majority of just blast beats there is a lot more interchanging between double bass, snare, and cymbals. Of course this is Mayhem, so all of the songs with the exception of the opening instrumental are fast and tenacious. The opening track is a bit too long, using a clip in length of a minute or less would have done the job instead of almost two and a half minutes of thick swirling wind sounds accompanied by some static. Not only that, but this is far too short (I've seen the price on this album going for as much as a regular CD, which I find to be a tad ridiculous).
It's a worthy purchase for sure, but I have my doubts about it being worth the amount of an album, which uses up all of the space available on the CD. Get it sometime, but don't put it ahead of a kick ass full-length that you might be looking for.
Powerful comeback.......2004-02-24

Boston's first folk supergroup?.......2002-11-11
All of us who worked at the station knew something special was happening in Boston's folk scene and this record was about to show us how. The result really opened the doors for many artists in the scene and Rounder Records was about to listen. Less than two years later, Ellis Paul was signed and touring nationally. It was a pretty neat time.
While the record is not perfect -- it lacks some professional mixing polish. It's a terrific time capsule recording -- taking folks back to when contemporary folk in Boston was a diverse mix of influences. It was also when folk was just "folk" in small coffeehouses that were meeting places to share ideas and music and NOT yuppified hangouts like Starbucks.
If you're a Boston folk fan, this is a must have. The songs are diverse in styles -- some funny, some sad. But mostly, it's just great music by four guys who kickstarted Boston's blossoming folk scene. Guess you could call them Boston folk's version of Clapton and Cream. Okay...too many metaphors.
