In recent years, a number of young bands have pushed the envelope of the traditional Yiddish music of klezmer by combining it with American pop influences. New York's Klezmatics have attracted the most attention with provocative album titles such as Rhythm & Jews and Jews with Horns, but no one has extended the possibilities of klezmer further than the New Orleans Klezmer All Stars. As their name implies, they combine the Eastern European music with their hometown's bacchanalian jazz and rhythm & blues. On The Big Kibosh, the septet adds elements of funk and avant-garde collage. At times they push their luck too far and lose the wonderful balance of old and new that marked their two earlier albums. On the other hand, these young players have become such impressive musicians that it's exciting to hear them take such chances. --Geoffrey Himes
