What were these oddly named manuscripts? Hand-copied collections of music so beautifully calligraphed and illustrated that they were collected as art treasures by wealthy nobility and bankers, exchanged as gifts between heads of state, and even used as diplomatic bribes of a sort. (Charles V gave several of them to key personages to secure his election as Holy Roman Emperor.) They were produced by the workshop of Petrus Alamire (né Imhoff), who took his nom de plume from solfège syllables (e.g., do re mi), and they're among the most important sources we have today for music from the period around 1500. Naxos has put together a fascinating sampler of music from some of Alamire's manuscripts: sacred music and elegant secular art songs by composers both known (Josquin, de la Rue) and almost forgotten (Marbianus de Orto), as well as a few pieces played on wonderfully raucous shawms and trombones--all performed by the exemplary Belgian ensemble Capilla Flamenca. This disc should be a treat for Renaissance collectors (even those who don't usually care for anthologies); at the super-budget price, it's a good introduction to Renaissance polyphony as well. --Matthew Westphal

I picked this CD up simply to round out an order, not thinking that it would be anything special. I was very wrong. This is one of the best Early Music CD's I own. Capilla Flamenca does an outstanding job of reproducing this early Franco-Flemish repertoire. There are some gems on this CD that you will find nowhere else. From polyphonic mass settings to lively Renaissance dance bands, this CD covers the era with grace. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Great recording, great music........2001-04-29

Without a doubt, early music is an acquired taste. Even though some will certainly gawk at the comparison, I find it very similar to music written in the 20th century. This similarity is not in how the music sounds, but rather how it needs to be listened to. If you purchase a CD of early music expecting to hear something that resembles Beethoven or Mozart, you are in for a real disappointment. If you want to hear something different, something that you don't hear very often, something that is beautiful in a decidedly different way, then maybe early music is right for you.

That being said, I must say that I love early music, just as I love new music. For anybody who already has a good collection of early works, this release, "The A-La-Mi-Re Manuscripts," is a superb choice. It is gorgeous music that is performed brilliantly and is recorded marvelously, revealing a full and rich tone. Or, if you are just starting to get your feet wet with early music, this is still a fantastic release to purchase, for the reasons mentioned above, as well as another one. The price. Don't let it fool you. This is great music that is as good as, if not better than, any comparable release at a much greater price. And if you purchase it and decide you don't like it,you're...(not out much money). But let me go on record saying that I doubt you'll ever regret purchasing this disc. It is a truly wonderful release that raises the bar for early music recordings, regardless of the price tag.

The ribald humor and over-the-top tall tales of François Rabelais are the sort of material that Dominique Visse and the Ensemble Clément Janequin, the preeminent comedians of the early-music world, would find irresistible. Here Visse, five singers, and five instrumentalists pay tribute to Rabelais in a fabulously raucous program including the expected bawdy ballads, a drinking song by the monks of the fictitious "Order of St. Babouyn" (precursors of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence?), a tune about why not to eat pork (don't ask), and a song about ugly breasts so scurrilous that Harmonia Mundi didn't print translations. (There are also several serious chansons, including lovely renditions of Gombert's famous Mille regretz and Je prens congie.) Be advised: many of the texts whiz by so fast that non-native French speakers will miss most of the words, let alone the jokes; still, the singers communicate the spirit of the music very clearly. (Another entertaining record is Ensemble Convivencia's Bayeux Manuscript disc, which features songs actually quoted by Rabelais.) Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars Great performances, but not really the Toledo Summit..........2005-05-31

This recording presents a selection of late 15th and early 16th century music from the Habsburg courts, and also that of Ferdinand and Isabella in Spain. The programme is both well-contrasted - featuring works by La Rue, Penalosa and Josquin alongside lesser known composers - and expertly performed by the four vocal soloists of the Orlando Consort. The Cancionero pieces are amongst the best a cappella renditions of this repertory available.

Whether this recording accurately reflects the music heard during the Toledo Summit (Philip the Fair's ceremonial visit to Toledo, 1502) is a different matter altogether. Certainly, the performances of sacred music here seem unduly minimalist, particularly given Antoine de Lalaing's eyewitness account of 60-80 Spanish singers participating in the Mass sung in Toledo Cathedral on May 8th 1502. Furthermore, it is known that they were joined by (amongst others, eg Hans Nagel?) the distinguished German cornettist Augustin Schubinger; a comparable occasion in 1503 at Innsbruck (in the presence of Maximilian) described how the Mass was performed by the two chapels and 'the sackbuts of the King [of the Romans]' who 'played the Deo gratias and the Ite missa est, and the singers of monseigneur [Philip] sang the Offertory' (Martin Picker, 'The Chanson Albums of Marguerite of Austria', Berkeley, 1965, pp. 23-5). The music heard during the Toledo Summit must surely be seen in the context of such accounts. Similarly, the secular music presented on this recording was not always performed by just voices alone: other possibilities included an ensemble of 'bas' instruments, or 1 singer accompanied by lute and/or harp, and it seems reasonable to assume that a number of these performance practice traditions were exploited during an event as important as the Toledo Summit (for more on performance of Cancionero songs, see literature by Tess Knighton; also briefly discussed in my review of Gothic Voices, 'The Voice in the Garden').

In short, this recording can be highly recommended, both for the variety and beauty of the music and also for the superb performances, even if it is probably not representative of the original event.

Claude Le Jeune (c.1530 - 1600) was born in in Valenciennes (now in France, but then part of Flanders). He spent his formative years in Flanders before travelling to Venice for a stay with the Flemish composer Adrian Willaert. He moved to Paris in around 1564 where he formed a relationship with the group of poets known as La Pléiade. He became a devoted French Huegenot, but despite this managed to hold a post in the French court organizing its music activities. By 1596 he had been promoted to the position of Royal Chamber Composer.

His music encompassed a remarkable range of influences including long forgotten Medieval contrapuntal practices such as isorhythms, melismatic hockets, and canons - all of which cohabit with the most advanced madrigalian devices, chromaticisms, and polychoral writing. In fact his writing as presented here could be described as being proto-Baroque.

This collection of music entitled "Autant en Emporte le Vent" (Gone with the Wind) here encompasses a wide range of chansons including drinking songs and chansons in a typically madrigalian manner on the subject of love, death, and war.

The Ensemble Clément Janequin are well known exponents of Franco-Flemish music of the Renaissance. They sing beautifully throughout led by the counter-tenor voice of Dominique Visse himself. Some pieces are accompanied on lute, positive organ, and viola da gamba.

Sylvain Gasser on Classicstoday France gave this recording a rave review: "Ici, la fête est totale, fête des sens et de la couleur, contrepoint aussi harmonieux que rigoureux" (here, the celebration is total, a celebration of the senses, of color, and of counterpoint as harmonious as it is rigorous). He added that "le plaisir est extrême" and gave it a 10/10 review (for both performance and recording). This is a recording that certainly does give much pleasure ('plaisir'). However, there is one criticism for which I have deducted a star - the texts are only in French with no translations whatsoever provided into any other language - let alone in English. So unless you are fine with reading 16th century French - the equivalent of the French reading Shakespeare - you may struggle to follow the text. While I agree with the French that we should all become polyglots, this takes it a step too far. Does this mean that from now on Harmonia Mundi will leave out multilingual translations of Renaissance English, French, Flemish, Italian, and German texts too? I have written an email of complaint on this matter to Harmonia Mundi and I encourage others to do the same.

As for the recorded sound quality, it is certainly very good though less than audiophile in quality lacking the ultimate in spaciousness and clarity.

Addit: I have subsequently received a reply from a company spokesman who said that their translators all balked at the text because it was too full of plays on words and so could not find anyone willing to give it a crack

5 out of 5 stars Like Romeo et Juliette, this is a great musical!.......2005-07-04

Ah, another fabulous musical by Gerard Presgurvic! Like on his previous masterpiece, "Romeo et Juliette", the songs are pop-music-like that have the potential to be hits (actually, at least one song has been released as a single in France). The voices are pretty and the lyrics, albeit somewhat cheesy sometimes, good as well.
This musical is a beautiful rendition of Margret Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind" and I wish they would release the full musical rather than just this "Best of" CD.
If you know and loved "Romeo et Juliette", odds are you'll fall in love with this one. Who could resist French musicals?
