Editorial Reviews

About the Artist
Murat Aydemir and Salih Bilgin’s collaboration Nevâ, released on Golden Horn Records, is a work of musical juxtapositions. The ney and tanbur, seldom played in duo, have very different aesthetics. The sensuous ney, beloved instrument of the Mevlevi Sufis, is often compared to the beauty of the human voice. The scholarly tanbur, on the other hand, is considered expressive of the classical Ottoman/Turkish repertoires. Yet as tanbur master and foremost expert on Turkish classical music, Necdet Yasar, remarks about Nevâ, "Aydemir and Bilgin successfully interweave the music of tanbur and ney." Murat Aydemir’s musical life is deeply influenced by Tanburi Cemil Bey. The album’s title, Nevâ, pays homage not only to Tanburi Cemil Bey’s "Nevâ Pesrevi" (the opening track), but also to the sounds and songs carried by musicians and their instruments through the generations — nevâ.

In keeping with nevâ, Aydemir and Bilgin’s repertoire presents works spanning several hundred years in traditional and modern interpretations. Cantemir’s regal "Pençgâh Pesrevi," composed in the late 17th century, represents the oldest work on the album. "Pençgâh Pesrevi" makes an interesting contrast to the album’s late-romantic era Turkish classical pieces, such as the rarely performed and sadly overlooked "Nevâ Pesrevi" composed by Tanburi Cemil Bey. Modern interpretations of classical styles of improvisation are interspersed throughout the album, including three "Müsterek Taksim" on tracks 2, 7, and 9. The unusual performance of "Fihrist Taksim" on track 4 gives listeners a rare opportunity to hear the subtle differences between modes in the Rast family (normally, improvisations move only between modes in unrelated families). Finally, several tracks accentuate the individual instruments, such as "Ussak Sazsemaisi," composed by ney master Aziz Dede. The tanbur used in this recording was made by master Sacit Gürel and the ney was made by Salih Bilgin. The ney and tanbur are supported by the daf (frame drum).

Murat Aydemir is best known for his work with Incesaz, one of the hottest combos performing new interpretations of Turkish popular and classical music. He began his studies at Istanbul Technical University’s Conservatory, under Tanburi Necip Gülses. He has performed with the prestigious Ministry of Culture’s Government Ensemble, formed and directed by Necdet Yasar, who represents the link from Tanburi Cemil Bey and his son Mesut Cemil in terms of school and sound. Aydemir has also been a member of the Ministry of Culture’s Classical Music Chorus in Istanbul.

Salih Bilgin is one of the leading ney virtuosos in Turkey today. Bilgin is the primary student of Niyazi Say?n, the greatest living ney player and an expert on Mevlevi Sufi music, with whom he still studies ney making, ebru (marbling), and tesbih (prayer beads). He has performed internationally with the Romeiko Ensemble, the Istanbul Tasavvuf Music and Semah Ensemble, and the Istanbul Government Classical Music Chorus. His extensive recording work brought him into collaboration with Melihat Gülses, Alaaeddin Yavasça, Derya Türkan, and Huseyin Tuncel. He performs with the Cantemir Ensemble, who provided the accompanying CDs to the authoritative "Kantemiroglu Edvari" and "Türk Musikisinde Makamlar (The Makams of Turkish Music)."

Album Description

Bright Eyes and Neva Dinova, both from Omaha, are longtime friends and mutual fans. Both bands have supported each other for years - long before the overwhelming mass notoriety that has enveloped Bright Eyes. Talk of doing a joint release has been bouncing back and forth between them for what seems like eons - yet hectic schedules have continuously delayed the project. Finally, they found some time. Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst plays guitar and sings backup on the Neva Dinova songs, and Neva Dinova plays some music and sings backup on the Bright Eyes tunes. The result is a mystifying, infectiously melodic blend of the two bands' styles that will leave no fan dissatisfied. Recorded by Conor Oberst and Jake Bellows in July 2003 and mixed by Mike Mogus shortly thereafter, "One Jug of Wine"...also features members of The Faint, Cursive, Rilo Kiley and more!

5 out of 5 stars A Great EP.......2007-01-11

It appears that this EP was designed to get Neva Denova some releases out there alongside Bright Eyes. Well, the Bright Eyes name got me to buy this, and its very good. Neva Denova is worthy of playing in tracks alongside of Bright Eyes tracks, and I enjoyed this EP very much.

5 out of 5 stars The best album I own........2006-12-04

While it's true Bright Eyes only performs two songs on the split, fans of Connor will find themselves easily falling in love with Neva's smooth, similarly meloncholy style. It is blues at it's bluest, capturing life at some pretty sad points. However, the rolling style in which they sing, just makes it so easy to learn the words and sing along. I emphasize that it is very sing-a-long accessible. Even though the content is sad, there's something about singing along that feels so...uplifting. It's a great album to listen to when you've got something on your shouders, cause singing along just lets you- put it down.

3 out of 5 stars Only two songs sung by Conor Oberst.......2006-03-23

I would assume that most people buying this album are Bright Eyes fans. Only two of the songs are sung by Oberst. Spring Cleaning is written by him but the other guy sings it. Black Comedy and I'll Be Your Friend are the only two he sings and they can be downloaded on Itunes for 99 cents a piece.

I repeat do not download Spring Cleaning if you wish to hear Oberst singing.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2005-09-09

I've never listened to an EP as many times as I have this one. The thing that startled me most about it was that I liked the Neva Dinova songs more than the ones crooned by Oberst. As a fan of any band, I think you tend to gravitate to their songs more than any other, and I thought that would happen for this album. Not the case. It starts with Tripped, which may start to find it's way onto mix-tapes without you even realizing it, and ends with the last refrain of Spring Cleaning, guaranteed to be something you hum for the rest of the day. Some of the best work from both of these artists, and it sounds like they just worked so damn well together that it leaves you wishing for more colab work in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Omaha....Incredible.......2005-03-12

Oberst Oconnor is genious-declared. That is not without reason. Young age of course, and fantastic musical lyrical and "cross-genre" touch.. Bringing in his friends only shows that this world is so full of wonderfull musichians, and music! This EP is a seldom treasure!

Album Description

With the stripped down simplicity of a guitar and a voice, Jake Bellows, Neva Dinova's leader, opens the album with "Hat O'er Eyes" and sets the mood: "He wears his hat o'er his eyes / And he's trying to keep it on / Says he's sick of living his life / And he's tired of being alone." From those first words to "I've Got A Feeling's" final barroom, sing-a-long power-chorus of "The world's a shitty place / I can't wait to die," Neva Dinova's The Hate Yourself Change guides you through an inspiringly despondent menagerie of musical mastery. Neva Dinova is a beloved Omaha band that first blipped on the nation's radar when The Los Angeles Times called their eponymous debut one of the "Top 10 Releases of 2002." When they released a split-EP with Bright Eyes called "One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels" in the middle of 2004, we were reminded of just how special Neva Dinova and their lead-singer, Jake Bellows, are. Picture the better parts of Coldplay, Mazzy Star, The Cure and! maybe even Johnny Cash, mixed with a mid-western innocence and the type of melancholy that makes you tap your feet and hum along. Now wrap that up into eleven incredible songs and you begin to understand Neva Dinova's latest tour de force. Jake has deftly managed to write an album that is at once filled with lyrics of sorrow and despair as it is packed with musical interludes of hope and exhilaration. The Hate Yourself Change is destined to catapult Neva Dinova further into the realm of worldwide acknowledgment as it will make you wonder why the mindless synthetic rock of today's radio overshadows the honesty and integrity of bands like Neva Dinova. The fact is, Jake Bellows isn't a depressing guy, he just plays one on this record — and, fortunately for us, he does it exceptionally well.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars brilliant....can't wait for more.......2006-04-29

I'm not gonna go on and on about how perfect this album is. Anyone that has listened to it knows exactly what I mean when I say it is "melodramotically exceptional."

I heard it playing overhead in a music store and was instantly hooked. From the slow, to the catchy, each song will make you reflect on life's circumstances.

Do not expect an instrumentally complex album. It's simple, but very effective. The lyrics are, deep, rich and emotional...be prepared, this album will break your heart, then make you smile.

5 out of 5 stars lovely.......2006-03-11

This is an amazing band, especially live- i saw them play with Bright Eyes and it was the greatest show i've ever experienced. Give it a listen. I also recommend their self-titled album (I love the song "Dances Fantastic".

5 out of 5 stars Got me into the band.......2006-01-26

This album helped me get into the grove of this surprisingly under-known band. One would think that after their ep with Bright Eyes, their new release would do very well, but i have found that many people just dont know about them. I suggest buying both of their albums, but you may have to listen to them a few times to really get a feel for them, which will then make you fall in love with their very distinct style.

3 out of 5 stars neva dinova.......2005-07-26

neva dinova have dropped to a lower key with "the hate yourself change". after some time in the studio and on the stage with bright eyes, they've taken on a charming new collection of pop songs focusing on depression, loneliness, etc. it comes damn near to breaking your heart a few times, but then they smile and wink and we all sigh in relief. i really do like these songs, but it doesn't feel complete for some reason. they don't work together that well and i think neva dinova is good enough to pull off a really good album. they're growing in a new direction that's worth a listen, but really isn't much better than their debut. i hope that they pull it together and release something truly great someday, but i'm satisfied giving this a spin every now and then in the mean-time.

5 out of 5 stars Great mature new album.......2005-02-17

I've followed this band for a while now, yet all of the CDs I've ended up buying by them have been collections of very good songs with mildly interesting ones sprinkled in throughout. Hate Yourself Change is different. Every song grabs you and makes you want to hear it again, just to make sure you heard it right. This CD really shows Neva Dinova's musical maturity, yet not losing any of that personal feeling to the music that makes you like them in the first place. Two of my favorites from the album would have to be "Can't Wait to See You" and "She Can't Change". "She Can't Change" really lays their band's composition open at the end, when they slow it down and then build back up, showing their instrumental layers as they layer three guitar parts and then the drums and it really catches hold of you. This album is a big step, very accessible and the ending makes you want more.

Album Description

U.S. Highball is one of the first underground masterpieces in American music. Partch's work explores what, decades later, would be called a 'subculture' - the hoboes, who traveled across the U.S. in search of work or new experience, defying social conventions and the strictures of civilized society. The recording on this CD is not U.S. Highball in any of Partch's (three) versions, but an arrangement for voice and string quartet made for Kronos in 1997 by Ben Johnston, a composer who studied and worked with Partch and with whose own music Kronos has had a long and fruitful relationship. Slipcase. Nonesuch. 2003.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Rebuttal and Praise.......2007-01-06

There have been comments and concerns with this CD in saying that it may not be in keeping with the original composition. What has been egregiously overlooked in previous complaints is the simple fact that Harry Partch was never actually in keeping with his OWN original compositions. Though most people think of an ensemble of Harry Partch instruments and performers as the true rendition of this piece, it must be realized that it first came out simply for microtonal guitar and voice--Harry traveled around to colleges and did solo performances of it! It then took on several various iterations, expanding up to, at one point, ten individual performers. Harry Partch was constantly reworking this piece, and, had he never died, would probably still be rearranging it. This particular arrangement was a commission written specifically for the Kronos Quartet, and was arranged by a former protege of Partch's. It remains as true as possible to Partch's original notes, styles and intentions. Seeing how faithfully this has been converted to string quartet is truly inspiring.

The Kronos Quartet does an absolutely incredible job managing all of the subtleties of this work. Microtonality is not easy!

I highly highly recommend this CD.

3 out of 5 stars small reservations, but that's only because I'm biased.......2006-08-03

I cringe a little whenEVER I see a Partch transcripted for something other than his original instrumentation. I think that's because Partch's work at creating his own music and theatre for that music was so creative and unique that I never tire of it and want to see newer recordings using those wonderful music machines just so I know that Partch's ideas won't fade in time and remain only in some select recordings.

I'm still getting over Kronos taking my favorite Partch piece, Barstow, and stringifying it on Howl, USA, but in all honesty Kronos does justice to Partch. It shouldn't seem too suprising--Kronos has made their reputation by doing string quartet work that doesn't always sounds like string quartet. Since they've reinvented the string quartet, it would seem feasible that they could reinvent Partch FOR string quartet.

I'm not wholly buying into it yet, but I also know that far worse could have been done to Partch in this recording, so I credit Kronos for the efforts they took to keep the spirit of the original composition alive. A central connection here seems to be the common desire to make truly American music that doesn't just glom off of European traditions. In doing this, Partch set to music notes of his own hobo trip, to put American experience to music. Though Kronos will always in the end sound a little too polished for the raw nature of Partch's work, I thank them for keeping his name relevant in contemporary music.

Thank you, Kronos.

1 out of 5 stars This should be the post-ultimate thing you hear........2005-10-01

Can't really criticize the performance because the composition was so terrible. Often one can say that one's musical purchases are simply a matter of taste. In this case, I can say that this music is bad on an absolute scale. Really, if you like this kind of stuff, hang out with some homeless people. I think I've seen this performed live outside the methadone clinic. You can check there, too.

5 out of 5 stars Harry Partch CD US Highball Kronos Quartet.......2005-09-20

The whole deal was top notch. Price, speed and quality. Could not have asked for more. Very, very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars David Barron and Kronos do justice to a masterpiece.......2003-11-19

The performance by David Barron and the Kronos Quartet of Harry Partch's landmark "US Highball" provides an experience of precise abandon. This entertaining, demanding, and thoroughly original work is given a performance in which the highlight is certainly Mr. Barron's expressive reading of Partch's gem of a text, in which vignettes narrating the hobo's life appear as brief scenes, sometimes hilariously funny, as in the statement by an old man emerging from a piano crate, who tells the gathering of hobos who have just arrived in his train yard, "I used to be a bum once"; or the hobo who observes concerning the passing motorists, "They don't stop much, do they?" Mr. Barron's ability to modulate his inflection, accent, and tone with the greatest flexibility, while still articulating the words so that they are always intelligible, bring a vitality to the performance which Partch clearly intended, and it is this vitality which, supported by the Kronos' standard excellence, makes this performance an experience to be treasured. This reviewer has driven across the country on several occasions, and the performance captured wonderfully the sense of changing vistas and conditions characteristic of such journeys.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME CD.......2006-03-30

I stumbled across this band one night while searching for new music (something besides the same old boring crap). I was very happy that this cd has the rarely found unique quality of making you feel like you've been on a journey (like reading a great book).

I LOVE IT!!

5 out of 5 stars Not emo, just goodness.......2006-01-26

I am slightly embarrassed that i heard about this band when i was a Bright Eyes fan, but they are very good. They dont try to overly impress anybody with fancy guitar solos, they focus primarily on lyrics, and they do a great job with them. They have a very distinct style that i am drawn to because of its emotion, but not to the point where it is annoying. Their simple and pretty melodies put the listen in the perfect state to recieve their lyrics at the right frame of mind. And surprisingly, every thing sounds sweet, like the tone was set just right when recording, its truely beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars i refer you to the cover.......2005-09-12

That just about sums it up pretty good. It's a low key album (with a few exceptions) that's good for autumn and the winter months. I really like the lead singers voice, for some reason it's very calming and compliments their style very well. What I found very surprising was the instrumentals on here; the guitar in Dances Fantastic is irresistable. Lucifer's Lament is another great song but goes in a slightly more acoustic folksy direction which works very well. Mainly i like this record because there are so many different sounds and styles on here yet they always keep their mellow-ish cozy sound. The only reason I'm not giving it five stars is b/c there are a few fillers on here but they are by no means BAD songs. It's a solid record and very enjoyable. Oh and by the way I'm not emo and neither is this record. There really needs to be less labeling and more listening....

5 out of 5 stars dances fantastic.......2004-05-30

Its a beautiful olla podrida of sound, stumbling in a sincere poise and science of rock songs; lonely ones that will stay to dwell in your ears.

5 out of 5 stars Neva Dinova Rocks.......2004-02-02

This album is a must for anyone who loves heartfelt emo. Brigt Eyes and Cursive fans will want to add this to their collection. The songs are melodic and downright beautiful at times.

After about two years from their 1st CD "Dream of the Orient", Concerto Koln and Sarband released their 2nd. The content of the new CD is divided into five sections: "Dede the European/Mozart the Turk" (Ismail Dede Efendi: 1778-1846), "From Vienna to the Ottoman Empire", "Musical Contest Alla Turca", "Danubian Waves" and "Mysticism and Ecstasy". The program is well prepared and represent the European (mostly German) and Ottoman (mostly Sufi) music of the era. There are more Ottoman pieces in this CD: while only 7 out of 26 pieces were Ottoman in "The Dream of the Orient", the new CD has 15 of the 27. Please keep in mind that the drums and cymbals of Sarband are less pronounced in this CD; there is no "military" music as the CD title clearly suggests.

It is extremely pleasing to see that this CD, for a second time, brings the East and West a bit closer, at least in music.

5 out of 5 stars Heated Lyricism.......2007-06-28

Kam, a rapper from South Central, Watts I believe, comes correct on his debut in 1993 under Ice Cube's guidance. Under a wide variety of producers, the vibe is funky, but not as much G-Funk in the vein of his 1995 album Made In America, which is some of the finest lyrical and musical G-Funk around, but this funk here on Neva Again is more raw, and some of the beats resemble underground East Coast rap. There are plenty of P-Funk samples and Zapp samples. Now in comparison to Made In America, the beats on Made... I like a little more, but as lyrical as that one was, the lyrics here are a little more heated, for Made... was a little tamer. Kam may not flow like Redman, Biggie, Guru, and the like, but he is hella lyrical. Peep his crazy take on the holidays on "Holiday Madness." He sees no point of those Eurocentric celebrations and how his folks are too broke to care. A wonderful gem here is "Still Got Love 4 'Um." He brings back memories of the homies growing up, and as their lives take different paths, and they change, he still remembers them. "Neva Again" does take more of a G-Funk vibe. The beat samples Zapp's "Heartbreaker." He takes on America and it's social innequalities and embraces Islam. He also takes on why he looks after his own people first, which is his answer to his alleged racist views, can you blame him. He may appear as racist on some joints here, but listen to his views. He is deep, and he deserves to vent his frustration with the situation in America. The beat on "Peace Treaty" is another of the few G-Funk selections here. The beat is hella phat, and almost resembles an Erick Sermon beat but west coastafied. "Stereotype" is crazy too. He takes on stereotypes of black folks. He is serious, but his bluntness can be humorous. All in all, this album is bangin' with some deep groove funk, and political and social lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars A Severely Underrated Classic (Rating: 10 out of 10- -5.0 stars).......2007-05-15

Damn, The Lench Mob was on a roll back in 1992-93. Kam who was once part of Ice Cube's Lench Mob went on to drop his solo debut back in early '93. I personally find Kam's "Neva Again to closely resemble the Ice Cube's "Amerikkka's Most Wanted" and "Death Certificate" in so many ways. He has a lot to say about many events going on in his neighborhood. When he rhymes, he rhymes with versitality and charisma, something that I'm feeling. "Stereotype" and "Hang Um High" are some dope tracks about the lifestyle that goes on that he has witnessed. I also like the track "You Don't Hear Me Dough" as it has a dope beat as Kam rhymes about the way people are living.

Guests are on one song. Ice Cube appears on "Watts Riot", and creates the chemestry between the two emcees. Koze, Stone, Stan The Guitar Man, Toothie, Chris Charity handled the producion this album. This album does have funky production like on "Neva Again" and the previously mentioned song "You Don't Hear Me Dough".

This album is so underrated. It's has an amazing vibe from start to finish, well dressed with some funky lyrics and beats. I'm suprised that not too many people heard of Kam, because he is an phenomonal lyricist. Even The Source gave this 3 mics out of 5 back in '93 (go figure). Sadly this album is out of print. If anything, you shouldn't pay no more than 30 bucks for this. Or you can download it legally for a cheap price, like I did. Either way If you're a fan of early Ice Cube, Public Enemy, Lench Mob, etc, don't hesitate to purchase this album. Kam would follow this up with Made in America in '95 and which is dope as well. Peace.

4 out of 5 stars A rap classic from the days when rap was real.......2006-10-23

One of rap's greatest storytellers, Kam (real name Craig Miller) raps about all facets of his life. The best song is undoubtedly "Still Got Love For 'Um" in which he expresses continued gratitude for his family despite numerous disagreements they've experienced over the years.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite kam cd.......2005-12-16

of all my kam cd's this is my favorite one. the lyrics and beats take me back to my young cali days. "I still got luv fo um", is a true to life song for my life everything that he spits in the song is what happened to me and my crew after we went our seperate ways, but oh well thats how it is growin up. But Kam is always gonna be in my CD deck foever, he is underrated. Cant wait for the new one to drop. And by the way L. Muhammad the album "The devil made me do it" was done by Paris in 1990, not by Kam. Just tah let cha know.

5 out of 5 stars East meets... what?.........2004-08-12

A wonderful combination of traditional Turkish music played by traditional musicians (to say nothing about Russian leader...) and the same oriental music - as great Western composers imagined it. We shall admit, those guys had really good imagination. And Deutche Grammophone will never spoil the party - the sound quality is terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Nobody's business but the Turks.......2004-02-14

Light-hearted and profound, this represents the best of the "what if?" concept compilations, taking "Eastern"-influenced 18th century European music and putting the Turkish instruments and musicians right back into the mix. As often happens in such cases, the synthesis is greater than the sum of its parts, and the result is a "Big Band Baroque" sound that will have you up on your feet and doing dervishlike spins around the living room in no time.

Also, this album offers another view of the "musical alchemy" powers of Concerto Koln. If these fine folks can thrust Dall'abaco back into the spotlight after centuries of obscurity, there is no telling what other feats they may be able to pull off in the years ahead.

5 out of 5 stars East Meets Wow!.......2003-07-30

This CD may well be the thinking man's and woman's crossover disc of the year, especially since the crossing-over is not from kitsch to classical and then back again, as in most of these joint-venture kinds of albums. Here, instead, we have a natural (well, in 18th-century terms, at least) pairing of forces-the classical orchestra and the Turkish battery of percussion. They really did get together, of course, in Mozart's and Haydn's day, as evidenced by The "Abduction from a Seraglio" and the "Military Symphony." And the fascinating historical backgrounds supplied in the notes to this recording (written by Werner Ehrhardt of Concerto Koln and Vladimir Ivanoff of Sarband) tell us that those batteries would often have been manned by Turkish musicians who had originally been assigned to ensembles sent as gifts by sultans to the courts of Europe. Though the ensembles were disbanded, the musicians stayed on, finding employment with European orchestras.

Thus half the disc features sets in which the Sarband percussion players join Concerto Koln for the music of Mozart, Gluck, Kraus, and Sussmayr. Lovers of so-called "Turkish" or "Janissary" music (of which I count myself one) may never hear these works with the same ears again. Not only do the Turkish instruments impart a special saltiness to the proceedings, but the freer, to-heck-with-the-bar-lines thinking of the Sarband players (read the notes for more about this) brings an extra military swagger to the proceedings that is unstoppable. The overture to the "Abduction" has never been this much of a thrill ride, and you'll probably wonder, too, why Gluck's "La Rencontre imprevue isn't a concert-hall sugarplum. Move over, "Russlan und Ludmilla"! In fact, Sarband comes close to breaking the bank in the development section of the first movement of Sussmayr's delightful "Turkish Symphony," where the feverish cross rhythms and syncopations make you think Charles Ives has unleashed one of his orchestral battles of the bands! But not to worry: Improvisation here meets sound classical principles, and if this performance is speculative, it is not wildly speculative, given the highbred nature of 18th-century "Turkish" orchestras. And the results are exciting!

As the notes to the recording also suggest, East-West musical influences in the 18th century were mostly a one-way street, so when the Concerto Koln players sit in with Sarband for sets of traditional Turkish music, we may be on more iffy ground interpretively, but to the untutored at least, the results are beguiling. One of the most enlightening features of the recording is the interpolation of traditional Turkish music with excerpts from Joseph Martin Kraus's Turkish opera "Soliman II." Here we get real Janissary music juxtaposed with Kraus's take on such music, real dervishes cheek-by-jowl with operatic dervishes. Fascinating. I certainly hope Concerto Koln and Sarband don't stop here.

5 out of 5 stars Punch, precision and panache.......2003-07-09

Dream of the Orient is a wonderful album that explores 18th century Europe's concept of Turkish music and the real thing. It combines the talents of Concerto Koln - THE period instrument band (remember Rene Jacobs' Cosi fan tutte?) and the neat little Turkish ensemble Sarband. What is amazing is hearing the two together on certain tracks, which is rather daring since we are combining East and West, jazzy cadences with precision and punch, but it all comes off with a certain panache. My fav is the perfect rendering of Mozart's Overture to Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail. It is incredible. That take properly displays the power and touch of Mozart's awesome entrance. This is a marvelous CD.

5 out of 5 stars Rich and Colorful.......2003-06-21

This excellent CD contains original Turkish and Classical Western Music composed at the time of "Turkish Craze". I love the "Turkish Symphony" by Sussmayr (Mozart's student). It is probably the best exhibition of Turkish drum (Davul) in a classical piece. Another favorite of mine is Todorini's "Izia". I expect more from Sarband and Concerto Koln of the same kind.
