5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Album Description

Up in the Great White North, the buzz is palpable. Knighted the latest Canadian "it" band, The Organ have been riding a wave of attention and acclaim revolving around the band's Mint/604 Records debut, 'Grab That Gun.' With cover stories in Canada's biggest music monthly (Exclaim) and myriad reviews and features from coast to coast — including unanticipated yet welcome coverage in American mags Fader and Venus — The Organ are ready to take on the U.S. with the release of 'Grab That Gun' on November 2, 2004.

Based around the warm, melancholic tones of Jenny Smyth's Hammond organ, Katie Sketch's Morrissey-meets-Alison Moyet vocals and Debora Cohen's guitar that alludes to Johnny Marr, the band has been consistently compared with the best songwriters of the early `80s new-wave, writing structured songs around minimal arrangements and creating a nuanced, textured sound that is brooding and catchy at the same time. The best of many bands can be found here — whether it is the weaving counterpoint melodies between organ and bass, the lean bell-like intonation of sparkling guitars, the charmed tenacity of the snare, or the suspended lamentation of Sketch's cascading vocals — and much excitement is borne out of the desire to name The Organ's sound in precise terms.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Really impressive .......2007-07-30

Too bad this band called it quits after one EP and one full-length. Their unique and well crafted sound really stood out in a sea of corporate crap that passes for indie/alternative these days. When I first heard 'Memorize the City' it made the hair on my neck stand up,which for a jaded soul like mine, doesnt happen too often. The rest of the CD is mighty fine too. I think that out of all of the 80's bands, Moev seems like the most accurate comparison. Thats just my NSHO. Its too bad that I didn't find out about this band earlier. When you think about the sad, sorry state of even 'indie' music these days,'Grab That Gun' is an absolute must have for your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Very good album by this British Columbia group.......2007-02-02

While they have their own unique style and sound,
* The Debbie Harry/Blondie influences are hard to ignore
* Joy Division undercurrents
* some Cranberries/O'Riardon similarities

If they sound or look a bit familiar, you have seen them perform in an earlier episode of Showtime's The L Word.

Grab this CD! :)

5 out of 5 stars Reminiscent of the 80's.......2007-01-17

If you love 80's music such as the Smiths, The Cure, Depeche Mode, etc..then chances are you will love this CD! Surprisingly entertaining, and worth the $$$

3 out of 5 stars Fun, but repetitive.......2006-08-10

The first song on this cd sets the standard for the rest of the songs- it is fun, interesting, and a remarkable copy of the sound of the 80's. However, the rest of the songs on the cd sound just about the same, only a little less interesting, so it gets repetitive and difficult to listen to as a whole album.

4 out of 5 stars Someone spent too much time in their basement as a teenager.......2006-05-25

Well, first off it's refreshing to hear a newer band NOT trying to recycle Joy Division/ Iggy Pop riffs. Instead, The Organ draws their influence from The Cure and The Smiths.

Sonically, the guitar work is reminscent of "Japanese Whispers" -era Cure. Vocally, the lead singer reminds me of Pat Benatar singing Morrissey covers all day - the phrasing is very Moz-like.

Like the Cure's earliest albums, Grab That Gun stays put in a very limited range, which makes it tough to listen to the whole album at a go (much like Seventeen Seconds/Faith/Pornography, all of which contain great songs, but get a bit monotonous as a album).

Album Description

Classic Highlife music from Ghana recorded 1981-1984 during the country's revolutionary period. The Guitar And Gun was recorded at a time of severe economic austerity that had adversely affected the existence of most recording studios and music clubs, and the purchase of musical instruments. Nevertheless Bokoor Studio kept the show rolling. From the stunning harmonies and rolling percussion of Salaam And His Cultural Imani Group to the skittering guitar wizardry of F. Kenya's Guitar Band you can hear the influences of traditional music, gospel and Western sounds. This timeless music sounds as good today as it did when originally released.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best of Highlife Ghana.......2006-08-30

Classic Highlife music from Ghana recorded between 1981 and 1984. It happens that during this period of time, Ghana was in civil war, a time of severe economic austerity not helpful for making music but in Bookor Studio creativity was at its peak. This cd is remastered from the original The Guitar and Gun tapes, never before on cd, with a superior quality of sound, reason why some not so well remastered songs aren't included here, it's a pitty. But, listen to the stunning harmonies of Salaam And His Cultural Group, the guitar wizardry of F. Kenya's Guitar Band, Roots Gospel from Genesis Gospel Singers and Baptist Disciple Singers, all timeless classics for those who like Highlife.

4 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable.......2005-09-25

This is an enjoyable selection of Ghanaian Highlife music from the early 1980s. A fusion of Western and African traditions in popular idioms, Highlife features interesting rhythms, distinctive guitar styles, and a surprisingly harmonious combination of guitar playing with brass and woodwinds. With North American, Caribbean, African, and even Portugese (they get credit for introducing the guitar to West Africa) roots, this music is a testament to the cross fertilization of popular culture in the Atlantic world.

Album Description

Mission of Burma thrilled fans and critics when they reformed after nearly 20 years of inactivity. Since then they've extensively toured the US and Europe, playing these classic songs before thousands of ecstatic fans, new and old. A Gun To The Head is a band-compiled collection of the best songs and recordings from their seminal late `70s/early `80s period - all their best-loved material in one convenient package.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Decent-but-skewed sampler from a profound legacy.......2006-05-29

This appears to be a solid sampler of Burma's original body of work (with only one glaring omission) which will listen well for one kind of audience, but fail for another to live up to Burma's legacy.

To be clear, the original body of work included only two singles "Academy Fight Song" and "Trem Two," one ep Signals, Calls & Marches, one full-length album Vs., and one live testament The Horrible Truth About Burma. So this sampler collects 2/3rds (14 of 21) of the original studio releases, missing only 2 cuts from the ep, 3 from the lp, and both singles' b-sides. (Also missing: three more stout extras from the current Vs. release.)

For a listener inclined toward pop hooks, this collection really gathers them up, and probably makes a higher-density/value purchase than Signals, Calls & Marches. For "punchy and catchy," nothing's missing here except a couple that don't wear so well over time anyway (Outlaw, OK/No Way, New Nails). And, to its credit, there's enough of Burma's sublime side here to beckon a new listener to investigate further. (Contrary to reviewer below, I think All-World Cowboy Romance and Fun World are both genius, on par with Trem Two and Weatherbox.)

But for someone inclined toward elaborate innovation, this collection does Vs. a disservice, and would be advised to skip this for that. The most glaring omission here is Vs.' opening scorcher, Secrets, which warms up the aural stage for perhaps the most challenging and rewarding album ever made. If that's what you're looking for, the re-sequence of its material here will pale by comparison.

So this recommendation is pretty clear-cut. If you're inclined toward aggressive-but-catchy postpunk (that has inspired generations of music ever since), go ahead and try out all these eggs in one basket. But if you're seeking the height of ambitious progpunk, aim straight for Vs. to hear Burma at the peak of their powers. (In particular, their rhythmic innovation will shine brighter in that original set list.) You could then get Signals, Calls & Marches later, and never have needed this collection to begin with.

But as introductory samplers go, this one seems pretty effective to me, representing both sides of the band, but with an emphasis on "hooky" that overshadows Burma's true legacy.

...

Individual sampling recommendations for new listeners:
Pop/soulful: That's When I Reach For My Revolver (then Fame & Fortune)
Aggressive/stampeding: Learn How (then Fun World)
Hypnotic/mesmerizing: Trem Two (then All World Cowboy Romance)
Sublime/elaborate: Weatherbox (then Einstein's Day)
Joyous/energetic: That's How I Escaped My Certain Fate (then Mica)

Or go find Secrets on the Vs. page, which represents almost all the values listed above, to hear as nutshell of an attitude for that record as it offers.

3 out of 5 stars tsk tsk, Rykodisc.......2005-09-02

While Rykodisc did the world a favor in 1997 by reissuing MoB's Signals, Calls & Marches, Vs. and The Horrible Truth About, this CD feels like just a blatant effort to cash in on MoB's surprisingly well-received reunion.

To add to this, this isn't even that decent of a sampler. Naturally, all three of Clint Conley's big "hits" are here (as too Roger Miller's "Fame and Fortune," which Graham Coxon also uber-faithfully covered in addition to "...Revolver"). However, it seems they tried to be "fair" to both Conley and Miller in terms of the number of songs, as opposed to the quality of songs, so the selection of Miller's songs ends up hurting. The clumsy "Fun World" instead of the brilliant and seering "Secrets"? Who made that call? And if they felt to need to cull two of Conley's songs off of The Horrible Turth About album, or include the rather uninteresting "All World Cowboy Romance" (co-written by Conley and Miller), why couldn't they get Miller's classic "Max Ernst" on here somehow? Granted, "Max Ernst" was only a b-side originally, but a sampler like this ought to benefit from hindsight, which means there's no good reason for it being excluded, as it, perhaps better than any other MoB song, encapsulates what Miller had wanted to acchieved with the first round of MoB's existence. It may be one song, but if you know MoB, you know this sampler's lacking significantly without it.

I give this 3 stars because it's MoB, so the music's still above par, regardless of my objections about track selections. But for your money, you're really far better off investing in either the Rykodisc reissues of the Signal, Calls & Marches EP and the Vs. album (but preferrably both). Not only will you get a fuller experience of MoB, both CDs have bonus tracks and the original (and superior) artwork that make them a better bargain than this.

These guys are the best live band I've ever seen. They are so much more real than all this Good Charlotte - Simple Plan Shlock! They are a RAWK band above all - loud and crazy live. Great CD from a band who can and will Kick You In the Teeth! I recommend this to all who dare... HD Rules!

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs from a great live band.......2004-01-02

No filler. Just one great song after another. I love this album - Specifically - "Running", "Devil in You", "What You See", and "Hello Somebody" are extremely catchy songs that rock.
