Stunning compilation.......2004-05-03

Another stunning compilation from the Italian label IRMA. Great tracks by Gazzara, LTJ Xperience and Ithamara Koorax, who performs the best rendition ever of a Brazilian anthem, "Fica Mal Com Deus", a protest song from the 60s by composer Geraldo Vandre. The original recording, by Quarteto Novo, was great too, but the most recent versions (like Rosalia de Souza's, another Brazilian expatriate) soounded boring and with no soul. Koorax's version begins with a lyrical piano introduction and then develops seductively thanks to Dom Um Romao's drums, another Brazilian legend. The vocal/flute unison passages are gorgeous too. Don't miss!

Some good, some cheesy, much Italy bossa..........2003-09-30

This is the Fourth chapter from this successful compilation series. The label from which the Sister Bossa compilations hail from is the Irma Group, a label based out of Italy. As such, Irma features many jazz groups, and has loads and loads and loads of compilations and artists in their catalogue. This, the Sister Bossa series, features soem of the artists on the label and a few alternative mixes to their own groups. And this is actually a solid comp! I don't rate it as highly as I do Sister Bossa 3, but it is pretty good. You have tracks by Banda Favela, ZEB, Gazzara, Deodato, and many others. What surprised me in this cd was when I heard Dirty Worx feat. Barbara Mendes: "Ipanema Girl". Yup, that's the song from the game show in the US featuring Bob Barker "The Price is Right".

If what I just told you doesn't turn you off, hopefully it will let you know that this isn't the most serious of music. It's light, fun, bossa heavy and has some catchy loops. The best tracks are the Gazzara track, the United Peace Voices cut, Zeb's Magnifica is on the darker side of the things and Deodato's "Nana" has a sort of "Blue Brazil" or "Tamba Trio" feel. Speaking of "Blue Brazil", check out the beginning of the Stockhold Cyclo song. I also dug the silly Freetempo cut "Incidental Montage". Songs that didn't get me were Monsieur Blumemberg's cut, Koorax's rendition of Fica Mal Com Deus (there are WAY better out there - like Rosalia De Souza's) and, well, Ipanema Girl is perhaps over the top cheesy.
