5 out of 5 stars Definitely something to remember.......1999-11-01

I watched the movie, and remembered it BECAUSE of the music. Superb !!! Exquisite combination of cello and oboe makes the central theme (and track) something to be remembered for your whole life. I really recommend it !

5 out of 5 stars "The Secret Agent" by Philip Glass.......1999-06-16

This, in my humble opinion, is one of Glass' most ingenoius works. Set to the athmospheric surreality of 19th century london, this album seamlessly juxtaposes traditional melodic harmonies with colorations that are distinctively Glass. I ould recommend this record to any audionphile or Glass aficionado

4 out of 5 stars RIP, JERRY HADLEY 1952-2007.......2007-07-18

Among his numerous recordings of opera, concert and lighter works, this one CD best serves the late tenor's art. Arias, both familiar and not, exemplify his clear, clean singing, wonderful diction and musicality. Although it is currently unavailable, I'm hoping RCA will see fit to reissue it soon in memory of a truly fine American-trained artist and singer.

4 out of 5 stars INTERESTING REPERTOIRE, WELL SUNG.......2003-11-14

While currently out of print BMG might well reissue the album so some comments are in order. The album has a repertoire that is, under any conditions, exceptionally demanding with the arias from Dom Sebastien, La dame blanche, Les Huguenots, etc., being among the most difficult to sing in the tenor literature. For the most part Hadley proves a wealth of beautiful, well posed tone running into trouble only when he must deal with troublesome top notes that have never been his forte. The top c-sharp taken in the aria "Seul sur la terre" from Dom Sebastien in pure head tone( read falsetto )is really stylistically correct but the versions by Marcelo Alvarez, Roberto Alagna, Luciano Pavarotti( as "Deserto in terra" ), and, of course, Alfredo Kraus are much more thrilling with the top note ringing out in full voice. Kraus was well into his 60s but his ageless voice took the top notes with consummate ease.

The arias from Lucia di Lammermoor, L'elisir d'Amore, Mignon, Lakme, and The Bohemian Girl are all well done with really beautiful tone and stylistic elan. The arias from Les cloches de Corneville, L'eclair, and The Rose of Castille and Sigismondo are well sung but so new to me as music that a critical evaluation is not possible.

The aria from Martha sung in the original German as "Ach, so fromm" is, at the climax, rather stressful and strained.

The sound is excellent and the direction of the English Chamber Orchestra by Richard Bonynge is a real plus for both Hadley and the listener.

Overall this album is worthy of Hadley's reputation as an outstanding lyric tenor who has proven his worth in any number of difficult, demanding operatic roles. Listen, for example, to his clear runs, etc. While Hadley isn't the ideal tenor for operas like Tosca, Il Trovatore, etc., he can and does provide much pleasure in the type of repertoire recorded here and in modern works.

5 out of 5 stars Hillbilly Rock.......2004-01-04

This is pure Marty Stuart. This record has a lot of energy and hillbilly rocking. Tempted is Marty's signature song. It reminds you of Marty's Johnny Cash connection. All the songs are strong and entertaining. This record is KICKN'. Marty knew what sound he wanted and each and every song gives you some great country sounds.

5 out of 5 stars A very strong 90s country album.......2001-07-29

I bought this album on cassette in 1991 - the first country album I'd bought (I now have over 200). I had listened to Elvis for several years and had become familiar with others through that - Johnny Cash being one. Browsing through a local record store, knowing a little about some country songs, I recognised the Cash song title Blue Train on Marty Stuart's Tempted album. I bought it out of curiosity and was very glad I did. All ten songs are strong and have more lasting appeal than many country albums that I've bought since by almost all the Nashville male country stars. Too many modern country CDs have, on average, around two good songs with the others just filler. This album entertains throughout. Highlights include the modern take on the country standard I'm Blue, I'm Lonesome, the rollicking Paint The Town Tonight and the album's closer, Get Back To The Country. This is one of the few mainstream Nashville releases that would stand up against the best of the current country independent label releases (see Rodney Crowell and Dale Watson's latest releases). Tempted, while contemporary, contains a respectful nod to country music's past, befitting of the artist who is a recognised country music historian.

5 out of 5 stars Six of the ten tracks are awsome!!!.......1998-05-18

This album has I think 4 songs that were Top 40 singles when they were released and a couple of others that should have been.

Worth the bucks in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Domestic release is sorta available.......2007-05-10

I have been wanting to purchase this album for some time, as I loved the last Mandalay album. But it was another one of those frustrating cases of British and Canadian artists not being released stateside or having a long-delayed release. (See also: Beth Gibbons, David Usher, and Ian Brown, to name a few off the top of my head.) But to my delight, I realized today that "Passive Aggressive" is available on iTunes for $9.99. I'm not exactly sure why there is a domestic release digitally but not in CD form, but I found it interesting. Amazon might want to look into maybe obtaining this album as a digital release, if possible.

5 out of 5 stars HOW BEAUTIFUL, HOW PURE.......2006-05-08

Nicola Hitchcock's voice is an indescribable force: it has a raw emotion, a terribly touching melancholy, a sweetness of pure beauty, a miraculous grace. I could use thousands of expressions to describe what I feel when I listen to her voice, and yet, you could never apprehend what it means.

I discovered her six years ago, when I first listened to her song "This Life". There was something primal and emotive in this song, a quality that could both affect you and inspire you. A year later, listening to a Cafe del Mar compilation, I found a song called "Beautiful"; amused and amazed, I realized it was the same person singing, so I decided to learn who she was.

I bought two Mandalay albums, and they moved me and seduced me in a way I cannot explain. Since then, they have been one of my favourite bands, and Nicola's voice has become a sort of shelter for me. The place I go back when the whole world seems to tumble down.

Passive Aggressive is no different. From the moment you hear the birds sing in the first seconds of "You will feel like this", you understand the album will lead you to a sacred place of no pain and no sorrow. It works as a prophecy. "All or Nothing" is a delicate song, combining the warmth of electronic beats, and the towering presence of classical instruments. I can't help but smile every time I listen to "Moving to a New Space", the perfect soundtrack for a new day, where all suffering seems to be gone. It is the promise of a new morning.

There's a naked coldness about such a personal and private song as "Heart", where a lover surrenders to love; if you don't feel moved by this song, then you don't feel at all. "Forgive me" is an electronic ode to self-forgiveness, a song about getting at peace with yourself, and your mistakes. Drums and trumpets arrive like a new day in "Cloudy skies and Rain", digging deeper in the dance mood suggested by the previous song. It seems to me, "Feel" sounds like a Mandalay song; with its violins, its guitars, and the tender words of Nicola, it is an adorable song. "Ordinary day" has a Machiavellian, contagious taste, and a quiet moment of bliss.

"Surrender" is a slow composition with profound lyrics and a sensual, smooth saxophone. If a mere song could transmit both fragility and intrigue, that would be "Because". The album closes with a very intimate song, "Morning", composed by Hector Zazou. The piano and violin here have a soothing, deeply emotive quality: another gem.

This is an album of collaborations between the talents of several composers and musicians, and the sparkling beauty of Nicola's voice and lyrics. It is an album of love, forgiveness, and purity. It is an album to fall in love with.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE this CD...get it now and spread the word!.......2006-03-20

"Passive Agressive"

This extraordinary CD, "Passive Agressive" can be deceptive at first. Upon first listening depending where you are and what you are doing, it just seems to fit the mood.
I first listened to it alone and in a quiet environment and it seemed to be that sort of CD. One to experience at home.
Let me explain:
My first go round was at home laying on the couch at night...the CD begins with "You Will Feel Like This" and instantly you are taken by Nicola's ethereal delivery and the music just seems to flow from the speakers in a swirling lush soundscape of melody. As the cd progresses you realize that there is no need to have the remote in hand, as every song is equally matched to the next... I love a CD where every song can easily be your favorite depending on the day...this is one of those CD's.
The second listen came about when I had to leave the next night for Austin from Houston. I put in "Passive Agressive" and turned up the volume just enough to hear the music but not so loud that i couldnt hear the wind outside. Once again, the music "fit".
It seemed during songs like "Heart" that the traffic of cars were doing a ballet of turns and movement to the music...honestly it was just beautiful. As my drive continued I found myself wanting to go back and relisten to each song to not only help fill up my 2 1/2 hour drive but to just have those moments recaptured.
The song "Because" seemed to propel my car forward on its journey and that song became my official road trip song listening to it more than a handful of times in a row.
The third time I listend to "Passive Agressive" it was sunny and incredible weather and went with a friend for a drive through the hills of Wimberly Texas. With the windows down and the breeze blowing in, Nicola's voice seemed to make everything even brighter...the landscape passing by seemed more rich, more peaceful at times and more exciting at times like during "I Forgive Me" which made you want to put your arm out of the car like when you were little and catch the wind in your hand. The final track came on and as we were coasting through the hills...to our left was a train moving along the side of us and with the help of Nicola's music it seemed like a scene from a sweeping and epic film...just breathtaking and simply beautiful...
like Nicola, her music and this CD.
If you have it, give it a re-listen and see how the music can fit any situation and in turn make it more memorable and then spread the word to everyone you know.
If you dont have it purchase it today...

Thank you and enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars Am i missing something here?.......2006-01-24

I must admit i bought the album because of the cover. I still love the cover. It made the album look really good. Then i saw that this album has a title that is without a doubt, one of the best album titles ever. So maybe i was expecting more, or something different, i don't know, but i didn't like the album itself. I listened to it over and over, really hoping i'd like it because i wanted to so bad. But, it did nothing for me. Time and again, i was agitated, and was skipping songs til the album ended. I usually love ambient-like music. Her voice is beatiful, i'll say that. But i just couldn't consider it a great piece of work. I'm sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2005-10-12

I was first introduced to Nicola Hitchcock's amazing voice when a friend let me listen to her copy of Solace, the U.S. album she did when she was still with Mandalay. After hearing that she released a solo album, I immediately rushed to my closest Barnes and Noble (the only retailer that carries the CD) and bought it. I recommend you do the same. Make sure you get the one with the bonus track of "I Forgive Me (Acoustic)", it's amazing and I like it better than the original version. The CD is all-around great; it has a different sound than the stuff she did with Saul Freeman, which is still amazing work. Some of the tracks remind me of Emiliana Torrini's "Fisherman's Woman" album, but that isn't a bad thing. If you love Mandalay, you're going to love Nicola Hitchcock's "Passive Aggressive".

I am on a hunt for it. Its called "envulopsuosity" or something close to that. If anyone has heard Tempted you'll know why I am on the hunt for there second disc. PLease email me with any info! This is one of the greatest cd's...from "Notion Doll" with it's haunting, hypnotic but beautiful words to ALL of the upbeat and danceable, most tranceable and perfect melodies..."Tempted, Free, Never Get Enough...and ALL the rest. I took a chance buying this cd as I do many times but so thrilled I did. I love being introduced to new (at least to me) music! I will listen to it for many years to come!

5 out of 5 stars More Pease! More!.......2001-10-14

This "Album" was released in 1994 and is absolute
        gorgeous "song-based" trance-techno album.
Unfortunatelly since mainstream media in the U.S.
automatically bans anything electronic or anything
with a house-dance beat, this album got very unfairly
ignored. It is definitely one of the best albums of
the 90s. Every song has the wonderfull siren-female
        voice singer, performing sing-a-long melodies.
It definitly puts me in a trance, while giving me a workout.
Buy this album! You wont regret it! I wish songwriter Ray
Carroll makes more albums as Waterlilies, even if independently
released and they could promote it on the web.

        5 out of 5 stars a true undiscovered gem.......2001-07-24

One of the best releases of 1994, this musical endeavor deserved much more success than it got.

The Waterlillies, consisting of lead vocalist/producer/arranger Sandra Jill Alikas and producer/arranger Ray Carroll, turned in a brilliant, polished performance here. Sandra's vocals do the rare feat of working so well on both soaring, hook driven dance cuts ("Tempted", "Free", "Work it Out") and heart-breaking ballads ("Never Get Enough", "Nolion Doll", "Take My Breath Away"). You can practically feel the ache and yearning in her beautiful voice & lyrics. Toss in a tasty instrumental ("Supersonic") and even end the CD on a superb note, with the haunting a cappella version of the Carpenters' "Close to You", and you have one of the best CD's of the year... perhaps of all time.

Defintely a keeper, I would recommend this CD to anyone -- even if they're not fans of the genre.

4 out of 5 stars Late eighties reunion album.......2006-06-16

I agree that Steeleye Span's best years were the early years, when they recorded and toured regularly together, but this album has much to commend it. Recorded (it seems) to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of their original formation, this is an album full of contrasts with one disappointing track. The songs are a mix of traditional and original songs. Death is a common theme - about half the songs here are about death in one form or another.

The album opens with Padstow, a bright and cheerful traditional song about the May Day festivities in that Cornish seaside resort. Next comes The fox, an interesting original song about foxhunting, taken from the perspective of a confident fox who expects to win the battles against the horses and hounds. Two butchers, a traditional song, is about two men on horseback who hear cries of distress from nearby woods. One of the men thinks it a trap but the other believes the cries are genuine. Find out what happens for yourself. Two original songs come after that - Following me (about a stalker) and Seagull (about the old game of shove-penny).

The disappointment is The cruel mother, which comes acrossas a monotonous dirge but could have been brilliant. It is about a mother who kills her new-orn baby. When the mother eventually dies, she turns up at the gates of Heaven where she meets the child that she killed. The mother doesn't recognize the child but the child recognizes the mother. Unfortunately, the verse about the killing and the verse about the mother attempting to enter Heaven are treated as one long verse while the concluding lines about the mother's punishment are scarcely audible. I assume that they were trying to dramatize the song but their efforts completely backfired. I had to study the lyrics carefully to figure out what the song was about.

After that, the quality of the album returns to normal. All the remaining songs are traditional beginning with Jack Hall, a song about a man facing execution. Another traditional song, Searching for lambs, is about a shepherd falling in love. Shaking of the sheets is about a funeral ceremony. A reels medley comes next followed by the concluding song, Betsy Bell and Mary Gray, about two Scottish women who die of the plague.

In many ways, this is a brilliant album although not quite up to the standard of their seventies music. However, I am obliged to remove one star for The cruel mother.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great ,either.......2004-03-14

This is nowhere near even approaching the standard of some of their Seventies albums, but it is better than the two albums that came before it, Back in Line(1986) and Sails of Silver(1980). Whilst most of the tracks are "trad. arr.", they are mostly imbued with a sort of Eighties` pop blandness and insipidness. There`s a watered-down feel to the songs. Well, it WAS the Eighties after all. The two tracks "Betsy Bell And Mary Grey" and "Searching For Lambs" are the most tradional-sounding on the album, with Maddy Prior singing on both, and there`s also a fine violin solo on the former.

"The First House in Connaught/Sailor`s Bonnet" is a rousing fiddle-led instrumental, frequently performed at live shows.

The ludicrously cheesy "Following Me" sounds like straight Pop, which was never Steeleye`s forte. The best Steeleye Span songs have always been adaptations of traditional songs. Another of the original compositions, "The Fox", doesn`t convince either, with its Animal-Rights pretensions. I`m not an advocate of fox-hunting, but the sentiments expressed in this song seem a bit contrived, cliched and superficial to me. (Does Peter Knight REALLY care that much about the plight of foxes?) But, more importantly, it is
arguably the weakest track, in musical terms, on the album, anyway.

4 out of 5 stars one of Steeleye's most accessible efforts.......2002-01-05

By the 1980s, Steeleye Span had reformed but they were not nearly as prolific as they had been during their heyday. "Tempted and Tried" was released near the dawn of the 90s and demonstrates an older, wiser Steeleye, more mellow than most of its predecessors and an album that can appeal to even the more folk-rock phobic in the audience. True, there is a price to pay for instant appeal - the hard driving quality of "Parcel of Rogues" and "All Around My Hat" is sadly missing and the whole thing comes across as slightly sanitized, but the eschewing of period effects makes the album sound fresh even today. And lest we thing that Steeleye has contented itself with nursery rhymes, under the joyful veneer of "Jack Hall" is a gory tale, and "Shaking of the Sheets" is surely about death, while the frightening "Somebody's Watching" is a triumph of mood and a statement of just how versatile this group can be. "Tempted and Tried" comes highly recommended because, as in almost all Steeleye recordings, the song selection, arrangement, playing, and sheer enthusiasm are exemplary.

        4 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars.......1999-08-05

After the transitional "Back In Line" album, Steeleye continued on and released this, their 12th album in 1990, twenty years after their still magnificent debut "Hark The Village Wait."

The results here, while not always perfect, show the band still with the capacity to make music worth hearing.

The highlights here included "Jack Hall," "Padstow," and a pair of spooky numbers in "Betsy Bell and Mary Gray" (about two women who flee London to escape the plague) and "Shaking of the Sheets," which might remind someone of Sharon Lois and Bram, only if that trio had a sense of the deeply macabre.

"Tempted and Tired" isn't likely to be at the top of anyone's list of favorite Steeleye albums, but most Steeleye fans will want it in their collection nonetheless.

2 out of 5 stars There are two good tracks on this cd..........1999-03-20

...and they are very, very good. "Betsy Bell and Mary Grey" and "Searching for lambs" are mournful and mystical. These two songs owe much of their charm to the fact that they KNOW that they are folk songs, and don't pretend to be otherwise-- little more than Maddy Prior's alto (a definite improvement over the pretty, but apparently fake, soprano that she assumed in the band's early albums) and Peter Knight's fiddle are needed to carry them off. The rest of the tracks on this album are unspeakable. The band seems determined to appeal to a broader, dumber audience than what it naturally attracts, and ends up sounding even more inane than the treacly soft-pop that makes most fans of folk-rock positively ill. "The shaking of the sheets" in particular reminded me of the Sharon Lois and Bram albums I used to love when I was about six years old. I finished the album wanting to strangle Bob Johnson (IS this the same Bob Johnson who made "Below the Salt"'s "King Henry" so memorable?)whose nauseating voice and overblown arrangements seem to be responsible for the feel of this cd.
