Album Description
One dozen beautiful young women, all in their twenties, take the stage and stand before an array of exotic and ancient musical instruments. Although an uncommon sight, the moment they start to play, it's clear the members of the Twelve Girls Band are among the most gifted musicians in the world. Hailing from the "People's Republic of China", the Twelve Girls Band is already one of that country's most popular ensembles and the most successful artist to come to America from China. The Twelve Girls Band takes 1500 years of Chinese musical tradition and makes it contemporary. By fusing traditional instruments with modern harmonies and vibrant performances, they create a sound that crosses all cultural barriers, bringing unique tonal colors not only to their own compositions, but western standards as well.
For those who believe in the power of music to bring people on this planet closer together, the Twelve Girls Band will be a driving force from one of the world's oldest cultures.
Customer Reviews:
Delightful World Music from The People's Republic of China .......2005-11-03
This group is from The People's Republic of China and use traditional Chinese instrumentation to produce some very interesting interpretations of Western music as well as some very interesting Chinese compositions.
This is their second CD, and I understand it has been a very big success, as well as their sold out live performances across the United States.
I put this in the category of World, because their music runs from pop, to classical to New Age and then to Chinese. Yes, it all works very well on this CD, not clashing in any way or stretching the listener from one form to another.
The CD I have has 12 tracks, one of which is a live performance. The recording quality is excellent, even the live performance. There are some familiar pieces on this CD and there are some very new and wondrous compositions.
Note here that the CD that is offered for sale has a DVD, which I did not receive for review.
Overall, I am impressed with this group. This is a great first impression for the new listener to this kind of performance. The band is tight, knows how to please the listener as well as show off their excellent skills. The compositions are well chosen, and the CD is a good production piece.
If you enjoy upbeat music, and would like something with a slight Chinese twist, this is a lovely work to add to your collection. While it does run towards the "pop" side, it has elements that could be classified as "New Age". I will tell you, in my book the only way I classify it is "totally enjoyable"! mafoster

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

So that's how I like it anyway. You can try it if you want.
One highlight on this disc is Ten-Sided Ambush / Lovers. These two songs, which play like one song, were originally performed on the House of Flying Daggers soundtrack. This arrangement is absolutely beautiful. I only wish it wasn't so short.
I would recommend an imported DVD/CD set of their recent live concert in 2005 (performed in Japan if I'm correct). I can't type a title because it's written in Chinese. Amazon doesn't sell it but if you try hard you can find it on the web. This concert video is from the ROmantic Energy tour and contains some of these songs, as well as other favorites.

Tremenda CD.......2006-04-30
La Palabra really is THE WORD in salsa!.......2004-11-12
La Palabra sigue en talla!.......2004-07-25
La Palabra had an enormous impact on salsa in New York when he came out with the song Lady. It was the first song, I recall, to combine romanticism with salsa and have English lyrics. I loved it just like everyone else. In fact, that song was played numerous times in the clubs each night - just like I'm Going to Shenzhen is when I travel around the world - which I do periodically for my business. (And by the way, Europeans love the slow tempo of Tun Tun de Tu Corazon.) I am a very avid fan of La Palabra because he goes outside of the salsa box and maintains his quality.
I remember listening to Orquesta Aragon when they did a combo song called El Charleston which combined cha cha cha with the Charleston. I also remember our great, Beny More when he combined the big band American sound with Latin music. Both artists brought a new flavor to our music.
For the lady in Hollywood, Florida, perhaps you need to go do some research about our music before you go writing negative reviews about our artists who are keeping our music alive and making the whole world dance.
Only a couple of good songs.......2004-07-18
Although he is a good pianist, I was surprised to learn that La Palabra is from Cuba. Technically he has what it takes to be a Cuban musician, but he has lost the Cuban style. I was also shocked when I read somewhere that the other singer on breakthrough, Gonzalo Chomat is also a Cuban exhile. I left Cuba less than ten years ago and I have never heard of Chomat. The band is based in California so I would have guessed he is from Mexico. Chomat has also lost the Cuban style. He doesn't sing like a Cuban at all. California is not Cuba or Miami, so it appears Orq. La Palabra is trying to soften up or lose the hard Caribbean edge and sell themselves to California Latinos -- very different style from east coast Latinos.
I guess with such boring songs that we hear in elevators and in doctor's offices, like "Feelings" and "Lady" this band is trying to sell themselves not only to California Latinos, but also to American English speaking audiences, however there is only one Miami sound machine. Before they go any further with this, they should enroll the second lead singer, Chomat in some English classes first, he is hardly understandable on either American song. "I'm going to Shen Zen" is a complete waste of time and will make anyone think that Orq. La Palabra should please leave hip hop to those who can do it right -- like Snoop Dog and M&M.
The album is not a total loss however, two very good dance songs are El Temblor and Ahe Ahe. On these songs the band plays the harder energetic salsa the Caribbean is known for, and they show that they are good musicians, they just need to stop pimping themselves so hard and recapture their Cuban roots.
If you buy this CD don't forget to burn the two good songs on it for your salsa dancing pleasure before you give it away to a coworker at the office Christmas party.

The Best Album I've Never Heard Before!.......2007-02-24
It wasn't until years after I first met Russ at an LA comedy writing session, that I grew to appreciate Russ' unique yet timeless approach to both instrument and idiom.
I was at the bachelor cottage home of a mutual friend in Tarzana [oddly, the site of the aforementioned writing confab -Ha! Who says 'legal-ese' is a foreign language?-]; Anyway, a recording was being played.
I blurted out: "Hey, who's the clarinetist on the session? Yo! This cat can BLOW, Jake!" [thank goodness I remembered the comma!] My friend says: "That's Russ!" to which I retort: "I didn't know he played. He's great! I think he's better than Woody!"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, I was thinking Herman - who were YOU thinking? Not THAT guy, he's an amateur! [though he does make a good movie every decade or two]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
In my best LA 'Yo-cat' musicain dialect, I too was expressing what many as yet had not [and still have not] discovered.
Now where am I? Oh yeah, Pennsylvania!
I have listened to [and even downloaded] all of the sample clips. The clips are great! I highly recommend them. It's interesting to note that all of the mellifluous hyperboly spewed in supercilious fashion by 'professional' reviewers - was never superfluous, and is actually [in this case] true!
I would pay the 40 bucks for 'Blue Scarlett' in a heartbeat, were Russ not a close personal friend. But, of course I know he's going to send me a complementary personally autographed copy - as soon as. . . Hey!! There's the door! I Bet it's the FedEx guy with my autographed copy!
I better get this...You all really have to check out the clips, then BUY THE ALBUM! -Adieu Reservoir!-
Great Listening.......2003-12-16
The music which Russ chosen is a pleasing mixture of some old standards and his own compositions which blend perfectly. This is just the type of music to put you into a mellow mood, and would best be enjoyed before a warm fire, with a good bottle of wine, and your significant other.
