About the Artist
Charles Sedlak- Guitar Charles Sedlak was born in Tucsson, Arizona. He was then brought up in a Mexican communit, where his godfather Ismael Barrejos taught him the gypsy art of playing the guitar. And that's how Charles has grown up : with the passion of music in his blood. Charles lives today in Pleasanton near San Francisco where he also performs at the "Blue Agave" Club ( which he dedicated a song to on his previous album,"ARIZONA").

Product Description
"La Guitarra" is an instrumental album of Flamenco music. Charles Sedlak plays as a virtuoso the classic guitar while, on some tracks, Steve Oliver accompanies him with Keyboards/Percussion. This is a peaceful, beautiful, relaxing music.

    Product Description

It's one of the interesting paradoxes of music history that during the century-long craze for the 5-course 'Chitarra Spagnuola' which swept Europe around 1600, infecting royalty and commoners alike, with hundreds of books of music written for it by dozens of composers in France and Italy, that almost nothing survives from Spain, its spiritual home. Part of the reason might be the economic and political senility of the Spanish Empire in a constantly progressing state of decay since the end of the 16th century; little music of any kind was published. Another reason might be the evanescent nature of the music itself, coming as it did from an instrument which inhabited the separate worlds of folk and art music. Few guitarists or their activities were documented in Spain because in Spain everyone was a guitarist, and while the quality might range from the dismal scratchings of someone waiting for a shave at the barbershop (where there were always a few guitars hanging on the wall) to the inspired improvisation of a musician in the theatre or at court, the music itself was free and spontaneous, never intended to be notated; part of the internal dialogue of the Spanish people. In any event, we're lucky that three Spanish guitarists of this period did write their music down for publication; Francisco Guerau and Gaspar Sanz in the 17th century, and the subject of the present recording, Santiago de Murcia, in the 18th. Such is the beauty and vitality of what they have left us that it can still give delight today, even as we pensively contemplate all the wonderful sounds that have gone forever, vanished on an evening breeze 300 years past. In order to appreciate Santiago's achievement I need to say a little about his two predecessors, both of them very different. Guerau, who was a choirmaster at the Royal Chapel in Madrid, wrote in a serious, elevated style. His main subject was the Passacalle, an exploration and elaboration of simple chord progressions which Spanish musicians treated with the same respectful attitude that Germans reserved for the Prelude and Fugue. His one publication, the Poema Harmonica of 1694 is one of the high points of 17th century Spanish music. Gaspar Sanz (not employed at court) was an educator, a populariser, and in my opinion, more of an inspired collector of folk music than a composer. He published three tiny how-to books in 1674-5 which are crammed with advice on strings, fingering, figured bass and tunes from Spain and the rest of Europe. He even had a go at writing a fugue on a Spanish folk tune (which, perhaps wisely, only takes up four lines of music). The melodies in the book have such a wonderful energy and spirit that they were reprinted again and again and still figure in guitarist's programmes today.

I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves music--period! Christopher Parkening is unquestionably one of the greatest classical guitarists of all-time. He embodies personal excellence like no other and is a brilliant artist. This CD is a must-have for any classical enthusiast. My favorite pieces include: Tárrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra," "Romance," Bach's "Prelude No. 6," and Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez." There are other versions of these pieces as well, but I always prefer Parkening's renditions, as they are oh so extraordinary--especially the recording of Aranjuez!! Other guitarists never seem to capture the essence of Rodrigo's musical masterpiece (e.g., Göran Söllescher in "Mad About Guitars"). But Parkening did! And the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was a perfect accompaniment.

This CD is definitely worth buying. Included is a CD booklet, which illustrates the history of Parkening's illustrious career, interesting tidbits about all 25 recorded pieces, and several photos of his early life to his "breathtaking performance" at Rodrigo's 90th birthday celebration at the Royal Festival Hall in London, 1992.

I am not going to go into great detail. I am working on a degree in classical guitar and I can say this is something to strive for. His musical interpretation of the peices represented here are some of the best I've heard. His tone, color, and phrasing is incredible.

5 out of 5 stars A gentleman musical agreement! .......2006-03-16

In guitar ` s playing there have been many renowned performers, gifted of exuberant technique. But curiously the Apollonian playing is not by itself strictly enough. The guitar is the instrument which is closer to heart as any other one. It demands from you passion and sentiment. There have been three well known guitarists, one of them from England and the other one from Spain and the third one from Japan whose sensibility was totally absent in their performances.

But fortunately for us, there have been notable interpreters that have been maintained a desired balance and contrast between brain and heart, achieving great distinction and total acknowledgement around the world. I would name seven primordial names along the instrument `s story. First of all: the mythic soloist Andres Segovia, Regino Sainz de la Maza, John Williams, Alirio Diaz, Manuel Berrueco, Siegfried Behrend and Christopher Parkening, among the most representative ones of a great list.

Christopher Parkening `s career has made a brilliant colorist, an impeccable and sensitive interpreter of this well reduced repertoire. His profound artistic conviction and convincing phrasing has been a perpetual motive of constant invitations and presentations around the world.

    5 out of 5 stars Extreme virtuosity.......2005-09-25

CP has become my chief inspiration to improve as a classical guitarist. His performances here are, without exception, phenomenal. He makes the most difficult pieces sound effortless. I prefer CP over John Williams because, while Williams is also unquestionably a master, he sounds a bit robotic to me at times. CP, on the other hand, never sacrifices musicality to precision. He sublimely maintains both.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-02-20

I like Placido Domingo very much, and the songs of Agustin Lara sung by Mr. Domingo are great, as also the other songs by M. Teresa Lara, Jorge Casas and Julio Hernandez. I really like this album and have it in my car to listen to it over and over again while driving long distances. I think this was a good purchase and highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Expressive.......2007-02-17

Agustin Lara made bright and new, without overdone orchestration. Many songs are from the Suite Espanola, and all are beloved by lovers of the Lara bolero, an emotional journey not to be missed. A new sound for a few, that were known in Mexico as performed by Alejandro Algara, a less known lyric tenor. Very bright, and with less slips in the mix than the A. Lara, Suite Espanola CD by Mr. Domingo, titled Bajo El Cielo Espanol, also a great offering by this dramatic performer. This is really another Domingo that is needed by any fan...Singing his own love of Spanish songs in songs by one of the great historical song writers....A Winner, in my opinion!

5 out of 5 stars Great Listening Music.......2000-03-14

A wonderful CD, a hidden treasure, by an artist who has suffered for being born in the Age of Pavarotti. Nobody does this kind of music better than Domingo - you will be transported.

This is Placido Domingo at his best--singing love songs in his native language. Very romantic and beautiful songs.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant in many ways.......2005-10-04

'The guitar is a genuinely Spanish instrument,' writes Uwe Kraemer, and it (along with the classical music for it) is one of the great gifts of Spanish culture to the world. The period of composition for guitar in Spanish culture began in the 1500s, and has never really faded. Guitarist John Williams (not to be confused with the composer of the Star Wars themes) is a master of this instrument, and has selected a repertoire of pieces spanning all four centuries of the instrument.

This is a solo album - all of the pieces here are arranged for single guitar. Some of the music is distinctively Spanish, while others bear a Catalan and Portuguese influence. Few of the composers on this album are well-known names in the Northern-European culture, but in the Latin culture, these are names that are known, and the music even more so.

From the earliest century of guitar music, composers such as Gaspar Sanz and Alonso Mudarra show the origins of this kind of work, which includes dissonances that occasionally sound like modern composition. There are pieces with lively spirit and power, inspiring dance in a more popular mode.

Mateo Albeniz has only one surviving composition; a church organist in the late eighteenth/early nineteenth century, he was influenced by Scarlatti and wrote for the harpischord - Williams has transcribed the piece for guitar here.

From the nineteenth to early twentieth centuries, many composers were productive: Isaac Albeniz, Julio Sagreras, Manuel de Falla, Enrique Granados, Francisco Tarrega, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and Joaquin Turina. Some like de Falla were very influenced by traditional Spanish stories and musical themes, whereas others like Granados drew inspiration from the broader aspects of European musical tradition. Villa-Lobos shows the transportation of Spanish music into the new world, becoming a noted name in Brazilian music (which, ironically, is the only major South American country without Spanish as its primary language).

Joaquin Rodrigo and Frederico Moreno Torroba represent composers in this grand style up to the present day.

John Williams' playing is technically sound and has flashes of emotional power and inspiration. Many pieces here are wonderful, but 'The Miller's Dance', the 'Fandango' and the Villa-Lobos 'Prelude No. 4 in E minor' stand out as the greatest of tracks here, being nothing short of brilliant.

      5 out of 5 stars classical gems.......2003-07-09

A treat for the solo guitar enthusiast, this is a sparkling collection of Spanish classics, full of drama and passion, played to perfection by John Williams. His technique is dazzling, with a purity and clarity even in the fast and fiery parts, and never a squishy note to be heard.
The music takes us back to the mid 16th century with Alonso Mudarra's "Fantasia", which is short and charming, as well as another early composer, Gaspar Sanz (1640-1710), with his "Canarios", up to many 20th century masters like de Falla, Torroba, and the only non-Spaniard represented, the Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos.
Favorites include Albeniz' "Cordoba", which has a marvelous "rasqueado", and the familiar but exciting "The Miller's Dance" by de Falla, but every track is impressive on this CD, as well as entertaining, something solo guitar music occasionally fails to be.

Having been reared by a mother who loved her guitar almost as much as her children, I have heard these pieces played often and by many great artists, but never better, or more enjoyably. This is a compilation that consists of previously released material, some from the 70's and 80's; the sound throughout is excellent, and the total time 73:46.

4 out of 5 stars Nobody Does It Better.......2001-11-24

I regard the recording of "Leyenda" on this CD the best. All other recordings are weak, especially during the buildup of the arpeggio and the strummed chords. Williams is the only guitarist I've heard (including Segovia) to give this dramatic masterpiece the dose of power it deserves--from the bright arpeggio to the whipsaw chordal strums. Other great performances on this CD are "Canarios," "Sonata in D," "Madronos," "Cordoba," and "Recuerdos de la Alhambra." To give an indication of just how powerful Williams' playing is, I've heard Christopher Parkening's and David Brandon's duo (which I highly regard) performance of "The Miller's Dance," and found it lacking the dynamism and excitement of Williams' solo performance. A few of the other compositions on this CD don't appeal to me much; otherwise, I'd rate this CD higher.

      4 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2001-10-15

Nice round choice of pieces, well performed. Naturally there are favorites, but overall, a lovely work.

      4 out of 5 stars A cultural treasure.......2001-10-09

While converting CDs to MP3s recently, I rediscovered this 1990 CD. I've always loved Williams' lively performances of "Canarios" and "Fantasia", but was struck, one week before the terrorist war began, by the gentle, sad beauty of "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" [Keepsakes of the Alhambra palace]. Tarrega's composition, an inspired work of genius, could serve to restore hopes of peace to the world.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding music and great value!!.......2006-04-02

Narciso Yepes is my favorite classical guitarist. I was delighted to hear a couple guitar concertos I had never heard before. Ohana, Bacarisse, and Ruiz-Pipo were great discoveries. Again, Yepes is the BEST. Strongly recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-08-22

The late Narciso Yepes is perhaps my favorite guitarist- Spanish or otherwse. With each of his recordings there is the sense of a madman, master, and poet at one with his instrument. I recently purchased "Guitarra espagnola" and have found endless enjoyment listening critically and as background while I work. This is the perfect "not background music" background music to play when you have guests. You and your guests will find yourself withdrawing from lively conversations to enjoy a poignant, sweet, or sinister moment with the music. This is a compilation of recordings from the past 20 to 30 years. The compositions span from the 17th to 20th century. The quality of the recordings is very good but at times varied. The availability of the compilation is very limited. Get it while you can! I also recommend Alirio Diaz and John Williams.

5 out of 5 stars Very Highly Recommended.......2004-05-08

I cannot recommend this retrospective of just a small amount of Yepes's work highly enough.

No matter what popular and lay opinions may be about Williams, Bream, Segovia, and others, the greatest classical guitarist of the 20th century was Narciso Yepes. It is a pity and a shame that the fear of the older generation of guitarists and their associates made Yepes a marginal figure.

He was a consummate technician and a knowledgeable interpreter of all musical idioms from the Middle Ages through to the height of the 20th Century avant-garde. His playing was characterized by intelligence, sensibility, clarity, power, majesty, poetry, and a devilish ability to separate and sustain contrapuntal lines.

In this box of 5 CDs you will find the definitive performance of Rodrigo's now famous "Aranjuez" concerto, which, incidentally, was first recorded and made famous by Yepes. There are also 2 CDs with rare concertos by Salvador Bacarisse, Antonio Ruiz-Pipo, and Maurice Ohana.

The other 3 CD's contain generally the best performances of the canon of solo guitar works that you are likely to find. The composers include Sanz, Mudarra, Narvaez, Soler, Sor, Albeniz, Granados, Tarrega, De Falla, Turina, Bacarisse, Rodrigo, Llobet, Pujol, Moreno Torroba, Montsalvatge, Ohana, and Ruiz-Pipo.

Every guitarist and every lover of the instrument should own this set. If it is not available, also refer to a similar box set with the ASIN number B00006L6RN or another B000026ZRL.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars The Maestro.......2005-07-25

Segovia was and always will be The Maestro. He was, as other reviewers say, the pioneer of modern classical guitar. To say that he has been somehow surpassed and passed by, as one previous reviewer seems to think is pure rubbish. To say that others have followed in his footsteps and become greats as well, is fact.

Music is always open to interpretation. Segovia was a great player and to understand the history of the classical guitar one must have listened to Segovia. He created the yardstick by which others are now measured.

This set not only includes great works played by the Maestro, it also includes Segovia speaking of his own life with the guitar. It is worth having along with other, more modern, gifted players such as Williams, Bream, Parkening and others who followed in the Maestro's footsteps.

5 out of 5 stars Has anyone ever created melodies like this from a guitar?.......2003-07-21

Okay, my classical experience is highly limited, having been raised on a healthy diet of Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and other blazing rock guitarists. But that doesn't mean I can't recognize a powerful guitarist when I see it, and Andres Segovia is just that. Sure you'll find your share of faster, more energetic playing, but you won't find any guitarist (Robert Johnson probably. George Harrison, maybe) in blues or rock that plays with as much melody, texture, and sheer, tear-jerking, beauty. And even if you have, guess what? They weren't the first to do it, and they weren't doing as far back as the 1920s. (Kicking it until the grand old age of 104) He is one of the first truly great guitarists, a virtuoso long before Satriani and Vai, playing classical on guitar long before anyone else, and playing it better then anyone else. This is him, completely solo and absolutely out of this universe in his playing. If you want to play guitar like the greats, then you can't go another day without this in your collection, deserving of a spot on your wall with Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Johnson, and all the imitators that followed him!

5 out of 5 stars The Anton Rubinstein of Guitarist.......2003-06-15

Musically, it's not just guitar music that he is offering: note the exquisite emotion patterns, the languor and the nostalgia and his sighs...it's most soothing and consolating.

Technically, the subtleties and the phenomenon could partly be attributed to his insistence on the use of the fleshy part, instead of the hard part of his thumb. Like Arrau and Horszowski on the piano or Menuhin on the violin: they always stuck to the hardest way aiming at the best result.

The remastered sound is wonderful. I'm not particularly keen about the narrative part though.

      5 out of 5 stars I AGREE.......2003-02-21

Segovia was the greatest classical guitarist that ever lived and always WILL be the greatest that ever lived, for he was the ROCK on which the classical guitar was practically founded! These 3 CD's of his most treasured pieces cut straight through the heart with GREAT brilliance and virtuosity- Words cannot express his mastery of the instrument. I especially liked the autobiography on the fourth CD- VERY thrilling to hear the maestro's voice- In Spanish AND in English. This is a MUST HAVE for the serious classical guitarist-

2 out of 5 stars this once was a great recording........2002-11-10

I totally agree with the fact that every classical guitarist
owes great respect to Segovia, but the reason I gave this recording such a low rating is a simple matter of evolution. Unlike instruments like the violin, the classical guitar as we know it today is a very young instrument (+-1 century). It also didn't get the recognition it deserved untill segovia came along. From that moment on, the classical guitar's popularity increased immensely, actually it is still growing. As a logical result of this growing popularity, the quality of the technique improved and interpretations were refined.
Though Segovia was incredible guitarist in his time and situation (he was the ONLY international preformer that played this instrument), it would just be irrational to claim that the dozens of great preformers later on never improved compared to segovia. It's like denying that einstein's theories are more accurate than those of Isaac Newton, because Newton was the rock on wich fysics were mostly build.

These recordings are interesting for those who would like to do some historical research on the classical guitar, but for those who just want to listen to a good preformance, I would really recommend the more recent recordings (Russel, Fisk, Sollscher,...).

5 out of 5 stars Terrific, timeless overview of greatest classical guitar........1999-11-19

I don't know what brought you to look over this page, but you shouldn't leave without dropping "Guitar--Greatest Hits" in your shopping cart. I bought this cassette ten years ago and absolutely loved it. I updated to a CD copy a few years back and swear by it for sleeping, driving, relaxing. Williams's consummate musical talent gives voice to some of the greatest classical guitar pieces ever, by the best composers ever (Albeniz, Sergovia, Vivaldi, etc.). The technique is brilliant, the melodies breathtaking. Nothing sounds quite like nylong string classical guitar, and few command the instrument like Williams. You can't be without this collection, and you can't beat this price. Order multiple copies now. I kid you not. You'll thank me.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to classical guitar!.......1999-10-23

This CD is a great disc to introduce you to the classical guitar. Before Piazzolla, Argentinean tango, whether performed in a Buenos Aires waterfront dive or cafe society boïte, was primarily music for a dance famously described as a "vertical expression of a horizontal desire." But filtered through Piazzolla's cosmopolitan outlook and intellect, it became a sophisticated yet still searingly sexy fusion of Argentina's rural milonga and African derived candombe styles with American jazz, European pop and 20th-century classical influences. Today, it's hard to believe that nuevo tango initially raised howls of indignation as Piazzolla's spell-binding bandoneon (accordion) and compositions ultimately won over the traditionalists. This compilation includes many of the late Maestro's best-known tunes, such as Libertango and two versions of Adios Nonino, an elegy for his father. From the percussive, Shostakovich-like thrust of Tres Minutos Con La Realidad to the keening, fatalistic bitterness of Milonga Del Angel, it is a collection to treasure, ideal for beginners and enlightening for collectors. --Christina Roden

          Album Description

Astor Piazzolla is arguably the greatest tango musician of all time and, from the 1950s onwards, he continued to experiment to test the limits of the genre. A virtuoso on the bandoneón, a brilliant composer, arranger and bandleader, Piazzolla conjured a sound that fused the evolutionary tangos of Aníbal Troilo, jazz, ambient and classical avant-garde aberrations. The Rough Guide To Astor Piazzolla is a soundtrack to the teeming city of Buenos Aires - peopled by colourful characters and incredible stories - and reflects his remarkable lifetime achievement.
