Album Description

The track 'Expo 2000' was originally written for the German Expo festival as a 30 second jingle and marked the first new musical output from the band in over 13 years. After much attention Kraftwerk turned it into a proper song and it was released in its un-mixed form in November 1999. The band then commissioned some of the most important and influential remixers and producers to rework Expo 2000. In addition to Kraftwerk's own 'Kling Klang' remixes are mixes by Orbital, Francois K, DJ Rolando and Underground Resistance. This Astralwerks CD & 2x12 inch has 9 tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Man, Nature, Technology.......2007-02-07

What was initially a 30-second jingle for the Expo 2000 Hanover festival became nearly a one hour CD that has more of a concert feel than simply being a studio release.

The mixes of Expo2000 flow into a theme that Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider worked to artistic perfection during a world tour several years later; open with a variety of sonic selections and then let the doors bust open to clubland. Even the CD cover gives a hint at how the group was going to present themselves on tour, which - in my opinion - started with these ten selections.

The Radio Mix is essentially an introduction, with R&B kicking it hard in Kling Klang Mix 2002. A melody of sounds are explored in Kling Klang Mix 2000, Orbital Mix, Kling Klang Mix 2001 and - to end what I term the first set - the Francois K & Rob Rives Mix.

And then it's to the dance floor for a heavy dose of technopop, as the 7:29 DJ Rolando Mix rocks the house and sets the stage for a trio of Underground Resistence mixes that clock in a few seconds over 10 funky minutes.

Kraftwerk Expo Remix shows Hutter and Schneider in excellent form and reaching out to a variety of artists to deliver an unexpected "concert" gem.

4 out of 5 stars A Kraftwerk Snack That Really Satisfies!!.......2003-06-05

When "Expo 2000" was released as a single in late 1999, it had been 13 years since Kraftwerk had released any new material and it had been nearly a decade since their last proper album, a collection of reworkings entitled "The Mix". One year later, another single of "Expo 2000" remixes was released. Now, all the tracks that were released on these two CD-singles are together on one CD. Don't be turned off by the fact that this is 10 different mixes of one song. The end result is quite stunning. There is a cohesive flow to this CD and it's does not sound like a series of remixes at all. There is an overall theme which is spread throughout the CD. It's interesting and fun to compare, contrast and choose your favorite mixes of the one piece of music. Overall, the sound of this CD is definitive Kraftwerk. It's great to have something new from these guys after all these years of patiently waiting. It's a nice little snack to satisfy your Kraftwerk appetitie. An album of all new material would have made for a filling dinner but "Expo Remix" will do for now. It's a great addition and a must for any Kraftwerk fan

4 out of 5 stars The show themselves once again!.......2003-04-20

Ahh Kraftwerk, probably one of the most elusive and intriguing bands of all time. Dispite the fact that this CD is really only one 'tune,' the remixes are wonderful and really add some good variation to the overall single. I would have been more impressed with mabye a video clip or 2 on the cd, but still, any activity from kraftwerk is always something special.

Incidentally, on their recent tour of Australia, they announced a new album being 99% complete and due around June to September! Fingers crossed for Kraftwerk fans!

4 out of 5 stars Kraftwerk's new album.......2001-11-25

This 10 track compilation combines the "Expo 2000" and "Expo Remix" singles, which were originally released in 1999 and 2000 respectively. It is a measure of Kraftwerk's economic work-rate that they are able to bang out a 52 minute album by simply making a song and remixing it twice. "Expo 2000 Kling Klang Mix 2000" is the original song, followed by an aggressive remix by the Dusseldorf legends, "Kling Klang Mix 2002". "Kling Klang Mix 2001" barely qualifies as a remix - it is simply the "2000 Mix" with the beats removed. For Track 1, the "Radio Mix", Kraftwerk did not even have to raise a finger. The same goes for tracks 5-10, in which Orbital, Francois Kevorkian, DJ Rolando and Underground Resistance provide interpretations of the original "Expo 2000" track. This is the modern-day "concept album" that many have been waiting for. Disappointed? Don't be. There should be a new album by around 2011.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2004-09-17

I just got it....listening to it right now.....This is THE best music ever. My 1st encounter with Kraftwerk was in the early 80's.....i'm so glad that ONE radio station had the guts to spin these records. No kidding i get goose bumps!!!!! Thanks Kraftwerk;-)

5 out of 5 stars One word: w00t........2004-05-14

First of all, the lenticular screen cover of this CD is extremely cool. I would definitely recommend this version of the single over the others just because of the cover, and the fact that there are only 5,000 copies of this version with the lenticular screen published.

The first track, the Radio Mix, is the original mix. It's very good, and, as DJ Krass says, it does not dissapoint. It isn't a different, more modern style as a lot of bands have done - Kraftwerk maintains their style.

The second track, the Kling Klang Mix 2000 just seems sort of like an extended version of the Radio Mix. It does have some good changes in it, though.

The third track, the KK Mix 2002 is awesome. It does seem a little more modern, but it is nonetheless an outstanding remix. It sounds different from the other mixes, and is very good It's my favorite Expo remix.

The last track, KK Mix 2001, is nothing too special compared to the 2000 mix. It has some more changes in it. It seems like a calmer mix of Expo.

I highly reccomend this single. Even though you could buy the Expo Remix CD, this has the coolest CD cover I have ever seen, and is definately good enough in itself.

5 out of 5 stars Still as modern as ever!.......2001-10-19

Finaly a new single from KRAFTWERK! I had my reservations at first, it sounded similiar to "Computer World." But after a few listens I realized they still sound as freash as the did in 1975. Although I did expect something more abstract from them, but I suppose you have your limits when scoring something for a real Expo. The single is worth the investment, and the Kling Klang remixs are great too!

4 out of 5 stars Recharging our Batteries.......2001-08-23

It seems like many including rock critics may have misunderstood the purpose, It appears originally this wasn't even intended to be a single obviously it would be impossible to even meet long-time fans expectations however this single was made exclusively for the fans.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2001-05-01

Classic Kraftwerk, nobody does it like these guys do it! They are the absolute masters of eletronic/techno music. One can hear immediately that Ralf and Florian have matured a bit, but like fine wine they indeed only improve with age. Listen for yourself...

The quality of the sound on this disc is incredible. Very full and very deep bottom end. It's a great workout for a mobile system with high power and high end speakers, especially if you have a subwoofer...you'll do nothing but smile.

I can't wait for more new material. Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Good, but can we have a little more?.......2002-05-13

So here's Kraftwerk, who haven't put out an album in, oh, 16 years I guess, and they have this one-off single. Expo 2000. Those are the words. Fine, I mean, it's Kraftwerk. But this thing sounds like something left over from...16 years ago.

It's good, it's Kraftwerk. If you like their peak stuff, you'll warm to this single. Perhaps Kraftwerk are just totally out of the loop, hence no output for so long, just periodic flirtations with popularity.

The remixes are nothing special, but to be honest, I bought single because I just wanted something new from these 'electronica' godfathers.

4 out of 5 stars Only 4 stars because track 4 has been edited.......2000-05-09

If you want more music, pick the German release of Expo 2000. Track 4, which is the best in my opinion, is shortened by a full three minutes down to 3:50 on this, the UK release. This was done apparently to make room for the video on this CD, which is not included on the German release. I think instead of editing track 4, track 3 should have either been edited or completely deleted. Track 3 is really horrible. However, if you don't mind an edited version of track 4 and want a Kraftwerk video, this is the version for you. The video runs using Quick Time and is a combination of Kraftwerk and computer animation. This is the only time Kraftwerk has made a video available for sale that actually has them in it, as far as I know. The real reason for getting this CD is the music. Tracks 1, 2 and 4 are excellent with 4 being my favorite. Track 4 should have been left intact as I said earlier. It is essentially track 2 without the percussion and on the German release, it is 6:50 long. Track 1 is the radio edit (3:35) and track 2 (6:48) is the unedited Expo 2000. I always skip track 3 because it sounds like a really bad (is there any other kind?) 70s disco era television soundtrack. The other tracks are pure Kraftwerk and have a great melody, synthesized vocals, vocoder effects and the unique Kraftwerk sound. Expo 2000 reminds me of Kraftwerk during their Radio-Activity and Man-Machine days, and it's great to hear that they still have their unmistakeable sound.

5 out of 5 stars I can't , but I in Russia.......2000-05-08

Sorry for my bad english. We have a problem, we have a new president, our banx are bancroted. AND we have no real credit cards and true chex. I`ve just make a radiotrip from KRAFTWERK to KAZAN (It is my home city with population about 1 500 000 people). My brother have a business and he is go to Dusseldorf, to exhibition. So kling-klang is coming.

Today, 7 May 2000 , open a new military park in downtown. There are: large capacity lorries, military trucks, aeros, helicopters and others in there.

We have a rest today, HAPPY VICTORY DAY!

Hey u, whats going on? Where is the Kraftwerk expo 2000 and tribute...

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Christian Hip-Hop Compilation to date!.......2002-05-01

I was completely blown away after 1 listening of this CD. I dare someone to listen to this entire set and say that Christian hip-hop is still [bad]. ALL MY FAVORITE UNDERGROUND EMCEES ARE ON HERE! Peace 586, Soul Heir, Playdough, SUP The Chemist, 3NP, Future Shock, Braille, Lojique, and tons and tons of new artists I hadn't heard of yet that I'm totally psyched about (RedCloud, Mr. Tru, Dirt, Absolute, DizOrgan). The only thing this album is missing is an appearance from the Labklik boys, but hey; no Compilation is ever 100% perfect :)

I seriously recommend this to every fan, AND sceptic of Christian hip-hop. I guarantee your opinion will be changed after just one sitting.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest hip hop release in years.......2002-04-20

The most comprehensive release i've had the chance to get my hands on in years. The production is butter. Sackcloth Fashion has more fresh production than they know what to do with. Nearly 160 minutes and it doesn't get boring. If you don't have this double cd priced for one yet you should cop it. I would love to help this indy label promote their releases. They are what Rawkus use to be but with more innovative music.

5 out of 5 stars Positive Beat's review.......2001-03-27

Fashion Expo-Round One: True HipHop * Various Artists (Syntax Records, 2000)

Double CD and its Hip Hop? I didn't know if I was ready for this. I mean, if it had been Mike E, SFC or even the Dynamic Twins, I would've been all for it. But this was a release featuring Old building and New building students and produced by the quirky, yet exciting Sackcloth Fashion. Didn't quite know what to expect. But here are my findings. Playdough comes with a Folk/Rock/Funk on Dues For Cashews, Corey Red goes ballistic on luke-warm minded peeps with the fiery declaration, No Gray Lines ... In fact, there are so many good moves between the two discs, that you barely notice any slightly bad moves. And while the unsigned kids represent the current state of Rap --in full number I might addd-- you can't sleep on the pioneers and the newer signed cats. Brand names like Sup the Chemist, Future Shock, Jurny of LPG, GRITS, KJ52 and Fros't don't disappoint. For instance, former VANILLA ICE-er/Tim Miner camper, E-Roc, makes you look forward to his next disc with the offering, Christian Emcee, what?, reminding you a bit of the funk that he laid down back on the Microphone Theology comilation. None of that interplanetary junk he was spewing for Grapetree here. But the tightest jam has got to be Runnin' from former Freedom of Soul-er, Peace 586. All in all, a lot of strong cuts for creative DJs to pull from.

5 out of 5 stars Gospel Flava's Expo Review.......2001-01-31

Fashion Expo Volume 1

Hip hop on parade, that's what this is. A fashion exposition, where the threads and accessories consist of loops, breakdowns, beats, samples, flows, scratches, patter and effects.

One after another, emcees, DJs, turntablists and auxillary officers of hip hop offer scripturally-inspired and holy words wrapped up a variety of externals. It's a heady experience and even those starved for brand new material will scarcely be able to take the entire 36 tracks (2 discs' worth) in one sitting.

The compilation was masterminded by the humble Syntax Records honchos who double as artists on the label (Sackcloth Fashion, see review). Needless to say, that gives these execs. an advantage, as their production, mixing, recording and mastering skills come authentic.

And we have to agree with the brief press notes that accompany the project: there indeed was a strong `no chaff' policy in effect for this endeavor - a separation of the wheat from the chaff, the phat from the wack.

The result? An avoidance of the twin plagues of compilation CDs (uneven production, weak tracks mixed in with strong ones).

The consistency in production lends a vibe of continuity, with a tendency towards to orchestral loops and thick, sometimes booming tracks. But a compilation is a compilation, and it would be near impossible to remove versatility, especially on one like this, which has over 30 artists on board.

It's just that this time you'll hear some of these artists in a different production context than you've heard before. Click here for the complete lineup.

Hip hop veteran Peace586 finds his place on the project with "Runnin'". What a track, with catchy hook and simple, profound flow sermonics. Fellow journeymen, E-Roc, Playdough and GRITS also handle respective tracks, tackling a variety of themes.

Corey Red impresses every time out, and he continues that trend here. Featuring Precise, "No Gray Lines" is a song that grabs with his hyper monotone patter that's manipulated to give a apocalyptic feel. "There's no more gray line, either you with Jesus or you're not, either your soul's headed for heaven or hell is where you'll rot".

Refreshingly, the female emcee voice has a say on Fashion Expo. And you'd be dead wrong if you're assuming that this is tokenism. On par with the best of the rest, you find Diz Organ's west coast parlance on "Under Man" to be lyrically hard hitting, beat flowing, and true. She also pops up with vocals on the multiple artist collab, "Quality Junk", as the opening track on disc 2.

Here's some other select cuts that generated deep appreciation, based on innovation, head bob-ability, memory stickiness and how severely the urge ran to press that `track repeat' button.

"Matthew" by Dirt: compassionate song with a story, nice bass, bouncy with a serious hook. "Who Am I?" by Illustrate featuring Joe Bereal: nicely flowing testimony track with a bump. "Game Over" by Fros'T: creative vocal patterns showcase nice similes with the drawn out chords of the loop making it work. Lyrics exhort that life is not a game but that we're to `travel on the straight and narrow'. "Tight With Lasso" by Absolute, Mr. Tru, Ill Harmonics: plucky guitar loops fling the hispanic flava'd rhymes and samples with frequent mic exchanges (favorite phrase: "up and coming has-beens"). "Jurny" by Jurny: from the respected LPG somes Jurny on a solo trip, reflecting on his rap experiences.

"The New Song" by D.O.P.E. Statikk: a palette of instruments (electric guitar, piano, tables and more) set off this crew's poetic honor of hip hop cultured street ministry Essential to your knowledge of what this holy hip hop is all about, it's some serious understatement to say that Fashion Expo Volume 1 make the grade.

More like, it's the teacher.

5 out of 5 stars 1340mag's review of Fashion Expo.......2001-01-31

I have no idea where to start this review. This CD is HUGE! It's 2 CDs jammed with old school hip hop. They have to be pushing the time constraints on each CD, there is just so much here! Okay, for you fans of Christian rap, don't bother with the rest of the review - just get off the Internet and buy this! This double CD is a virtual "who's who" of Christian hip hop artists. The only guy I can think of that should be on here but is not would be T-Bone, everyone else is here. You have Dirt, Coleon, Sup The Chemist, Jurny of LPG, Redcloud, Peace 586, Grits, Prophetics, E-Roc, Fros'T, and KJ52....and that's just half the songs! There are way too many artists on here to list them all. The music on here is high quality and created , as I understand it, by Sackcloth Fashion (whose album also rules). The lyrics are exactly what you expect and desire, bold in your face, yet peaceful and understanding lyrics. The definition of Christian, uncompromising and compassionate. All the rappers do a great job also, I don't even know what to say there is so much stuff to write about! My solution to this problem would be simply to tell you to go out and buy it : ) I'm not sure how much they are charging for this CD but whatever it is, if you like hip hop , it's worth every penny. A great CD in a market that is not known for it's quality. Also check out our interview with Syntax Records in this issue : )

Product Description

Hugh Le Caine, early electronic music pioneer, demonstrates his Electronic Sackbut in 1948 by playing the opening clarinet solo from Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue'. Working at his Toronto laboratory, supported by the Canadian National Research Council, he went on to engineer and prototype the touch sensitive organ, variable speed recorder, multi-track recorder, and numerous other magnificent electronic instruments. And he demonstrated his inventions by composing his own music and by arranging well known tunes, demonstrating at the same time that he was a talented musician and that he had a great sense of humor. This CD, produced by Gayle Young, Le Caine's biographer, is a comprehensive compilation of his music, much of it not available before. The CD also includes many of Le Caine's spoken explanations of his demonstrations which make the CD come alive with human interest. In its commemoration of a remarkable personality and in the historical importance of its content, this is an essential CD. In the extent to which it is also enjoyable, it is a stunning accomplishment.

For any student of electronic music, this cd is a must. The cd works on so many levels: as an historical archive, a textbook of tape and control voltage manipulation, and as an interesting listening experience. On the new album by his solo project Marbles, Robert Schneider of Apples In Stereo takes a breather from sunnily updated, ultra-catchy `60s indie-pop for a detour down the road of… sunnily updated and almost as catchy `80s pop. But before you go worrying that the recording auteur of the Elephant Six scene has jumped onto some sort of `80s bandwagon, there's nothing electro or disco-punk about this record, at all. It's also largely, blessedly un-ironic. Schneider wanted it to sound like "Gary Numan meets ELO." And by gum, that's a pretty accurate description! Half the album is a bit throwaway, sounding like background music from a cool cartoon or something, but the other half is exactly the kind of perfect pop one expects from Schneider. Expo is not in the same league as classic Apples, but it's the best solo effort by Schneider thus far. "Magic," for instance, has a Game Theory-ish, nu wave Big Star thing going on that's irresistible. --Mike McGonigal

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars Designing "Expo".......2005-04-16

Rob Schneider can do it all, and he seems to be determined to. As well as fronting psychpop band the Apples In Stereo, Schneider has also managed to perform solo in two side bands. One is the ultrastark Ulyssess, while the other is whimsical odds-and-ends band the Marbles.

But with "Expo," Schneider seems to have decided to treat the Marbles... seriously. While the debut "Pyramid Landing and Other Favorites" was a chimey lo-fi mishmash, "Expo" is a slicker, colder, and far more polished effort. It's a fun listen, but lacks the unpretentious sweetness of the previous Marbles album.

This time around, Schneider goes pure pop, with nods to the eighties and a strong new wave influence. No lo-fi-ness here -- it's all carefully polished synth waves over gritty guitar riffs. Bu t there are some forays into whimsy: The title track is a one-minute solo, with interwoven little synth melodies that bounce like a sparkling ball.

When dissected, the music is actually pretty simple -- guitar melodies with sheets, waves and doodles of electronica over it. It's a pleasant enough listen, but it lacks the warmth of Schneider's earlier -- albeit sloppier -- work. One of the biggest flaws is that Schneider's voice is buried in the mix. Really, in the heavy-synth songs Scheider sounds like the illicit love child of Devo and the Beach Boys.

Don't get me wrong, "Expo" is fun to listen to -- it's catchy and sweet, in a slick candy-coated way. The instrumentals, if you can call them that, are a bit more eerie and less poppy. And "Hello Sun" is the most enjoyable song that the Polyphonic Spree never made, with Schneider letting rip with joyous calls of "Hello SUN!"

This is not the Marbles as you know it, but it is a fun, synth-heavy little psychpop album. But it may leave you longing for the next Apples in Stereo album, to hear Schneider at his best.
