Amazon.com essential recording
For a composer who is (now) recognizably part of the 20th-century classical canon, the French émigré Edgard Varèse's output was astoundingly meager. Just 15 compositions from his entire life (he destroyed the compositions from his early years, and was a merciless editor of his own material in general) made it out to the listening world. Varèse was caught in the chasm between the music of yesterday and the music of tomorrow: scoring music for modified theremin, steamboat whistles, or air sirens, all balanced with the force of a large orchestra; writing pieces based on the flows of water and wind because that's what shapes the earth; using the concepts of chemical reactions and specific gravity as a basis for his music. Using extremes of contrast, dissonance, and variety in sound, Varèse's pieces had power in the way he attacked and shaped the sound he imagined. From Ionisation (1929), scored almost entirely for unpitched percussion, to the electronic-only, three-dimensionally produced Poeme Electronique (1958), he's provided a foundation that many genres, musicians, and composers were to build from not only for the next 40 years, but inevitably beyond. --Robin Edgerton
Customer Reviews:
Superb with just one reservation.......2006-11-10
This complete works of Varèse, superbly performed and recorded, is a fine accomplishment. My only disappointment was its version of Poème Elèctronique being the sole representation of that ground-breaking work that still holds up for me today as one of the finest pieces of electronic music yet created. It is interesting to be able to hear the version in this collection, which appears to be a loving restoration of what must have been primarily the raw, performing version, to be further enhanced during its performances in a very large space? What I miss in the present version is the more clearly heard textures of its huge sound palette; the resonant and often humerous interplay between them, and its dramatic sweep as it was presented on a sparcely documented stereo mix that first appeared on a Columbia Records LP, later reissued on a CD, now out of print. That one is surely more like an actual performance, presumably mixed to re-create as well as possible then what it might have sounded like over its four hundred loudspeakers in the Philips Pavillion. I hope there will be further reissues. To me the CBS version's drama and energy are more like that of the performances of the other pieces in this wonderful Complete Works set. -Curt Wittig
Go ahead, test your intelligence..........2006-06-18
Frank Zappa used to play Varese to test the intelligence of his friends, and most of them used to look at him like he was "out of his f---ing mind" as he put it. As a major Zappa fan, I bought this compliation, and I love every minute of it. This 2 CD set contains all of Varese's work (needless to say, Edgar wasn't very prolific). You really hear Varese's influence in Zappa's work. Some favorite pieces are Deserts, Poem Electronique, and Un Grand Sommeil Noir (Original Version). Varese's music reminds me of universes being created, in all their violence, beauty, and glory. Instruments crashing down upon one another. This music is reminiscent of Zappa's Weasels Ripped My Flesh and his orchestral work especially. Varese is one of the great American composers, like Aaron Copland, John Cage, and Conlon Nancarrow. Superb....
The definitive recordings........2005-11-09
Riccardo Chailly once said Varèse was going to be the Brahms of the XXI Century. I really don't know if he will be right or wrong, specially because of the very conservative auditoriums we have all around the world, but it should be this way, as the french composer has died too many years ago and his music should be understood but most of the public. It's sad to know that composers, like the own Mahler said, use to be years, decades, even centuries in advance to the general public .
Anyway, it's very important for the popular knowledge of this composers to have recordings like this, in which everything works perfectly as if it was a clock. After many years having some good recordings conducted by Boulez (Sony) and Nagano (Erato) mainly, we have now the possibility of listening one of the most musical and technical orchestra & baton of this time: The Concertgebouworkest and Riccado Chailly.
Most of the versions in this 2CDs set are the best I know, specially the orchestral works, played with conviction and precision by the Concertgebouworkest, an orchestra that had some problems with Mr.Chailly when they begin to play this, for them, `rare' music. The way Arcana sounds its incredible, full of power, mistery and perfection, the performing of Ameriques is breathtaking and I can only compare it with the truly outstanding version by Pierre Boulez with the CSO for DG. Deserts is a new dimension in Chailly's hands, really terrible and full of dark emotions.
Of course, there are little things that could be a bit better, like the Spanish sung in Ecuatorial, better sung in Nagano's version, but generally the performing is marvellous and the instrumental and ondes Martenot's playing in this piece is perfect in Chailly's version.
The ASKO Ensemble versions are outstanding too, showing a very modern Varèse. The performing of Ionisation, that great jewel, listened with a good Hi-Fi system is a experience not to be lost.
The recordings are very good, not outstanding, as it sounds like distant sometimes, but clear and with good definition, of course better with good electronics.
Booklet and presentation of the box is marvellous too; as it has to be in real event in recorded music in the last decades.
Sound Splitting Music.......2002-06-25
First, let me state that I am a long-time Varese fanatic. I first heard Ionisation live at a contemporary music concert in my town when I was 12, and I was hooked. I immediately bought the old Robert Craft double album on Columbia and played it until there were scratches on the scratches. So I was overjoyed to see a modern "complete" recording with up to date sonics. For the most part, I haven't been too disappointed with the performances either.
Chailly is great on much of this music. Ameriques and Arcana are sonic extravagazas. And this is the best recording I've heard of Nocturnal and Ecuatorial. Chailly does a good job with the chamber pieces of the 20s and 30s, though I agree with other reviewers, Boulez is much clearer on Ionisation. Chailly misses some of my favorite parts, and I find it hard to hear the first snare drum theme. (I'm also quite partial to Craft's version, but I don't think it's available anymore.)
I also must add to the chorus of exceptions on the questionable material. The orhestrated version of the solo song has no place on this CD. It doesn't sound like Varese, more like Debussy, and though the song is quite impressionistic, I think we presume too much to orchestrate it and pass it off as "complete" Varese. And neither Tune Up nor Dance for Burgess really add much to our understanding of Varese, and are of questionable value. I suspect that Varese would have destroyed them completely had he been able. Much better to have a recording of the revised version of Ameriques. The revision is so extensive, that a side by side comparison would be illuminating.
All in all, I like this CD. Chailly's take on Varese is big and passionate, something that I think both Boulez and Craft miss. Abravanel comes close to this passion, but Chailly wins because of the gorgeous sonics. I highly recommend this CD to those interested in exploring the unique sound world of Varese.
An aural knockout.......2002-02-01
Here are two discs with some of the most exciting 20th-century music around. Chailly and the Concertgebouw give definitive readings of Varèse's complex pieces, some written for a huge orchestra, and recorded in typically opulent London sound.
My favorites are, without a doubt, "Ameriques" and "Arcana," two explosive showpieces that will give your sound system quite a workout. But far from being merely loud, the scores have many beautiful textures (including quiet ones) scattered throughout the orchestra, and Chailly captures much of the glittering detail.
I even like "Tuning Up," which may seem like a less substantial work to most ears. To be fair, if the piece is not the last word in Varèse's imagination, it is clever enough for its short duration, and as with everything on this disc, the orchestra sounds superb and totally undaunted. Their virtuosity is both satisfying and thrilling, especially in such seldom-performed music.
Make sure your neighbors are away before turning up the performance of "Ameriques," though - the last few pages will blow your roof off.
I suspect Varèse would have loved this collection.

Has Some Of His Very Best Songs.......2007-02-14
This was Jay's second album and the album that cemented his status as a pop giant in Asia. This is a really terrific album. A few of the songs sound too similar but this album has some of the best songs Jay has ever recorded so far (notably 1, 3, 10).
Tracklist:
1. Love Before the Century (Ai Zai Xi Yuan Qian) - This song is AWESOME. It's the best song on this album and definitely one of the best song he's ever recorded. This is a really nice and addictive R&B song...lyrics are incredibly romantic, too.
2. Dad, I'm Back (Bo Wo Hui Lai Le) - rap/R&B hybrid. Jay sings about domestic abuse. Lyrics are haunting.
3. Simple Love (Jian Dan Ai) - LOVE LOVE LOVE this song. Also another one of my favorites and one of the best he's ever done. Really cute and uplifting song with an addictive and very memorable melody. Jay's voice sounds really good in this one, too.
4. Ninja (Ren Zhe) - Such a silly song, but tons of fun. Lots of rap fused with ancient-style music - it sounds great!
5. Can't Speak (Kai Bu Liao Kou) - gorgeous ballad
6. Shanghai 1943 - another ballad, sounds familiar to track five
7. Sorry (Dui Bu Qi) - fun R&B song
8. William's Castle (Wei Lian Gu Bao) - another R&B song, sounds like "Sorry." Neither of these songs, however, are as good as the first magical R&B song on this album, "Love Before the Century".
9. Nunchucks (Shuang Jie Gun) - also reminds me of "Ninja" and just as fun as that one, too. Really energetic song and nice fusion of the rap and ancient-style music again. Heavy on the rock...fun song to rock out to!
10. Silence (An Jing) - this is one of Jay's most popular songs...and for good reason. Beautiful ballad - the best ballad on this album and one of the best songs he's recorded.

Album Description
For his 2006 album, Jay has teamed up with veteran Taiwanese singer Fei Yu Ching who is extremely popular not only in Taiwan, but also in Mainland China and overseas. Music fads have come and gone over the years, but Fei has renamed a household name in Taiwan with his melodious ballads. Now the golden voice of nostalgic classics collaborates with pop giant Jay for the first time. To make a good thing even better, Jay's long-time collaborator Fang Wen Shan was there to inject a special flair into the song through his brilliant lyrics. Over 50 channels broadcast the two music wizards' highly anticipated duet Qian Li Zhi Wai ("Faraway") when it was released on August 23. As for the title of Jay's latest CD, Still Fantasy reflects the immense range of Jay's creativity as he introduces new elements while staying true to his trademark sound.
Customer Reviews:
Far from the best, but still Far Far above everything else in China.......2007-06-17
This is Jay's latest album, and it's not his best. Still, it's much better than much else in China. However, if you want a career defining album, get Eight Demensions or his Japanese greatest hits album Shichirika.
The main problem of this album is not that it's exactly bad, but that it's inferior compared to his other work, and quite a few of the songs sound the same. Of course those are common problem's, and the quality overal is quite good.
The album begins quite well, with all 5 starting tracks hit singles in China (actually the whole album made the top 40, which is a sign of his power here). Unfortunately, from 6 to 9 no tracks really jump out, although 9 Rosemary has a good beat to it, and Red Imitation, a (half-true) song about everyone imitating him ends nicely. This is where the album starts to get bogged down; although the individual songwriting makes the cut, the songs start to blend into one another soon.
The album ends nicely on the last track, the biggest hit the whole album spawned, The (longname). The album art is also quite good, and high quality packaging and etc. can be expected, since this man has money. I'm not sure if it will be in English, but from those horrible name translations I wouldn't put my money on a good translation. All told, this is a nice album, but not for you if you're starting on Chinese pop.
This is part of my project to review all CDs by Chinese artists.

What can I say about Jay's album? Well he did become a mega star on the songs he produces, sing, etc. This album is extremely good and people should actually buy it cause its worth every single penny. Also Jay's HOT! Well lets just put that aside, the songs on this CD has made extremely big impact in Taiwan. Did you teachers from Taiwan actually consider his song "Ting Ma Ma De Hua (Listen To Your Mother's Words)" a learning material? Well its true. Like in every other album he has songs of him and the piano. Good lyrics. Jay Chou produces most of his songs and most of his lyrics too. Vincent Fang or whatever is goanna be a person usually writes his lyrics if its not by Jay himself. The year ended off and this album came up second for the biggest selling album in Taiwan. The top one was Jolin Tsai! CONGRATS JOLIN TSAI! THIS TIME JAYS BEHIND YOU! OOH Jolin's New Album "Dancing Diva" is a great CD and so is the remix CD "Dancing Forever". DAMN JAY CHOU IS JUST SO SEXY
Still Fantasy.......2006-10-13
It's just too good. Nothing else. Perfection is the word thatg I will describe it.

Customer Reviews:
Welcome to Monsieur Gainsbourg's haunted mansion of love!.......2007-02-16
Ok, this album caught me off guard. This is one strange, beautiful and amazing piece of music. Let go as Monsieur Gainsbourg takes you by the hand and walks you through the twisted halls and rooms of his mansion of love. Spooky and exhilarating. Sometimes boardering on strange halloweenish music. Lamenting sappy piano song turned honky tonk break down. Capitan Cook R and B weirdness. Styles and forms of music that would usually not do me right, make me beg for more. Totally moving and manic. Who else can talk through basically an entire album and make it sound this great? I know who can, S.G. can. I love this. This seals my Gainsbourg fanaticism. I'm a Serge addict. Please help yourself and get this.
Excellent, but not as an Introduction to Serge.......2004-03-03
This is another classic album from Serge from around the time when he was really doing his best and most challenging work. However, I would definitely not recommend this as a starting point to get into Serge's work since it is probably his most difficult album and is less immediately satisfying than many of his other albums. Melody Nelson is still the best place to start if you are curious about Serge because it is simultaneously his best and most accessible album. If you have heard some of his other stuff though, you are more likely to 'get' this album and not dismiss it after a couple of listens. Definitely his most 'prog rock' album, a very weird listening experience indeed (and the 2 or 3 spoken word interludes over minimal music are kind of frustrating for non-French speakers like myself!). On a side note, I would disagree with the previous reviewer who says that his is his most 'pimpy and 'swanky' album, in many ways it is the album that is least in that sleazy vein, since it is just so odd. If you really want a CD that conjures up images of Serge sitting on a red velvet couch smoking a pipe Hugh Hefner style, listen to Vu De L'Exterieur instead. That's Serge at his pimpin' best!
GAINSBOURG'S UNIVERSE.......2003-05-02
SERGE GAINSBOURG has never been better in establish a concept thematicelly in terms of words and music. Each piece of this wonderful opus has a musical setting that is coherent in it's ensemble.32 minutes of pure joy and delight. The famous GAINSBOURG talking voice over was of course used before in recordings like JE T'AIME MOI NON PLUS,INITIALES BB and the previous concept album HISTOIRE DE MÉLODY NELSON,but never with that panache with the lyrics.VARIATIONS SUR MARILOU can résume GAINSBOURG's whole catalogue of themes and obsessions.Sit down, forget your presomptions about the often called dirty man of FRENCH music and listen to signifiant music by a creatively inspired artist. If you are wondering about the meaning of the lyrics of VARIATIONS SUR MARILOU,it's actually about woman masturbation. No kidding here, just the truth.
Storytelling with minimal instrumental backing.......2002-04-01
Five years after the masterpiece "Histoire de Melody Nelson", Serge Gainsbourg recorded another concept album. Like on "Melody Nelson", most songs on "L'homme à tête de chou" are spoken storytelling with instrumental accompaniment. On "Melody Nelson" the instrumental parts were played by an orchestra and a rock band but on this album it's a band alone. The music is even more minimalistic than on "Melody Nelson" though there are a few dramatic parts. At first I thought that this album isn't even real music, just storytelling with some instrumental backing. And I thought that it would be completely impossible to listen to for somebody who doesn't speak French. But after listening to it for a few times, I realized I had been wrong. The music may be extremely minimalistic but it's definitely good music. And there are a few songs with sung vocals, most notably "Marilou sous la neige" (Marilou Under the Snow). My French isn't perfect so there's a lot in the lyrics that I don't understad. But despite this, it's not hard to see that "L'homme à tête de chou" is a masterpiece.
Pimpy swanky lounge music.......2001-06-22
Serge Gainsbourg has many styles, this album represents his most pimpy and swanky of those styles. His voice is laid just so lightly over electric guitars and he sounds as if he is sitting in a dark room on a red velvet couch smoking a pipe, Hugh Hefner style. This is a truly great Serge album that is harder to find than most of his other works and is not to be missed.

well first of all his album is really good but then when you compare it with his other works. this one would be bad. when the album was released it was critized for being too similar to his past album. this is the reason why he didnt get a golden melody award and not even get NOMINATED! dont get me wrong but i love jay and he is so hott, but this album is bad compared to his other albums. this CD is still 5 stars but if you really know jay then this CD is just not good for jay. the cd is worth every penny though.
Very Talented.......2007-02-10
I have to admit I'm not a very big fan of C-Pop. However, Jay Chou (and Faye Wong) are exceptions; they have lots of variety in their music and I love everything they do. In Jay's case, I love the ballads, the rap, the R&B, the alternative, all of it. Also, I don't understand a word of Mandarin and I don't even like American R&B or rap, but I absolutely love all of Jay's work. Anyone who is a fan of Jay's love ballads will love this album...there are quite a bit of them on here. But there are enough rap/R&B songs to make those fans happy as well.
November's Chopin didn't get great reviews when it first came out, but I'd actually put it near the top of Jay's work.
Highlights of this album are:
1. Nocturne (Ye Qu) - the best song of the album, imo.
3. Hair Like Snow (Fa Rue Xue) - addictive
5. Attack From Four Sides (Si Mian Chu Ge) - great dance song! makes me want to drop everything and get up and dance!
7. Romantic Cell Phone (Lang Man Shou Ji) - nice alternative song...great guitar riffs in this song and nice melody
10. Coral Sea (Shan Hu Hai) - beautiful duet with Lara Liang Veronin; nice harmonizing here.
Actually, all the songs are quite good, and I can listen to this album without having to skip any tracks. Well, except for track 2 (Blue Storm) which kind of gives me a headache.
But this is still a very nice introduction to Jay Chou. And it should keep fans of his older albums happy. What can I say, he really is amazing. He's a diamond in the mud of C-Pop.
OH AND FOR THIS PERSON WHO WROTE THIS REVIEW.......2007-02-02
"Jay's production is amazing. With Fang Wun Shan's lyrics, we can see why he music sells. Speaking of lyrics, I say there's great difference between Taiwanese pop music's lyrics and Amercian pop music's lyrics. American lyrics, especially rap, contains profane, viloence, and sex. But in Taiwan, lyrics are just like beautiful poems. I think Americans should get to know more about this Taiwanese music. My favorite song: Hair Like Snow (plus it's music video is awesome!)
Vincent from Taiwan"
i dont believe you live in taiwan in the first place. second thing you should really know you facts before saying stuff cause jay chou does rap about violence. one of them is "dad i have come back". yeah get your facts striaght before you say something
Great voice =).......2006-06-09
I admit that I'm new to Jay Chou's music and that my first language is not Taiwanese Mandarine but I feel his voice..
He composes great emotional and catchy melodies and his voice is raw and just lovely to hear.
He is one of my favorite Asian artists. Highly recommended for those who enjoy great epic music...(check out the Initial D subtheme from Jay Chou..Yi Lu Xiang Bei)
Jay Chou is more than a singer.........2006-05-05
I've been listening to Jay Chou since he first released his first album.
His songs are not only interesting and very creative with funky beats.
He can rap, dance and act. There's no one else who can be as talented as he is in Asia.
I personally love Yi Lu Xiang Bei, Feng, Fa Ru Xue, Ye Qu and Shan Ru Hai with Lara.
Shan Ru Hai duet with Lara - is the most outstanding track.
Fa Ru Xue and Ye Qu are soothing.
I hope he could produce more albums. Can't hardly wait. Go, Jay Chou! :)

Classic Ballet Hits.......2003-05-19
In the nineteenth century, ballet began to emerge as a major art form. It began in the court of the French monarch, Louis XIV, and survived to become part of the dance sequences of Paris Grand Opera. The Paris Opera relied on monied subcribers and put on ballets that catered to the lordly Jockey Club of gentlemen who kept mistresses among the ballerinas. The ballet was not an art in its own right and were danced only at the beginning of the third act. Giacomo Meyerbeer's opera "Robert Le Diable" is a full-scale opera of dramatic proportions but contains in its third act "Dance of the Nuns". Later, the ballet became its own right, celebrated in such performances as "La Sylphide". The star ballerinas of the early 19th century were Marie Taglioni (who began en pointe footwork and the tutus) Lucile Grahn and Fanny Elsler. The ballet that changed it all was Adolphe Adam's Giselle. The cover to this cd album is Edgar Degas's "L'Etoile", some say it is a scene from Giselle. The arabesque the ballerina in white is making is a standard movement of ballet exercise. Degas himself loved the ballet and is considered the best artist to portray ballet of the 19th century.
Eventually, Coppelia, La Bayadere, Swan Lake and the Russian ballets of Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky would make a new standard of ballet. This compilation has highlights from some great ballets as well as danceable waltz-like rhythms. The ballet is and always will be a living art, fueled by imagination, conveyed through physical dynamics and orchestral music that touches the soul.
Great Moments Still Great Moments.......2001-12-17
I have owned this CD for 5 years and I love it as much today as I did the first day I listened to it. I have used it as a teaching tool for my ballet classes and also as music for performances. The music selected for this CD is wonderful. It is fun and energizes you when you hear it. It makes my students want to just dance around the studio every time I put it on. This would be a valuable addition to anyone's CD collection, especially Ballet instructors. I highly recomend it.

Rare delights.......2000-06-07
Comtemporary music for trumpet, alone and accompanied, is not always the most accessible idiom for listeners. However, this recording contains works that are exciting, dramatic, and poetic at times. Tom Stevens, the great Principal Trumpet of the Los Angeles Philhamonic for many years, performs with amazing facility and imagination. A portion of the works on the disc are Stevens' commissions and are standard reference recordings for the works. Well worth a listen.
