When I first heard of this title, the package was to include 2 CDs and a DVD. Make sure you know that here you are only getting 1 disk. I hope Amazon gets the full package, that's what I am waiting for.

What goes up must come down?.......2007-03-14

I simply consider Ruben Blades in the top 3 musicians of the spanish language. His lyrical approach and the level of musicianship he exhibits with his albums is truly top notch. I have reviewed more than one album by this Master of his genre so this is not the first time. I bought "Caminando because I had been so impressed with some of his other efforts that I wanted to build a collection of this great musician. "Caminando" had a couple of songs that I have heard in one of the two albums I have bought by him. This time I found some of his songs a little on the boring side and lacking some melodic aspect I can't quite put my finger on. A little more difficult to appreciate which basically proves that sometimes what goes up must come down or what was once down did go up for the other two albums I own I truly like. One of them is "Mundo" and the other I just can't remember and I am somewhat against the idea of looking through my many discs as I write this review. I give it a 3 star rating and no more. That is almost like listening to the early Police albums and then listening to something like "Nothing like the sun" by Sting or "Synchronicity" a few years later by the Police. I guess I am not a die hard fan that idolizes whatever is put out, regardless of their name. I have experienced this same situation with Bob Dylan. He has released a lot, I mean a whole lot of material and some of it is as boring as a grey day at the beach, but his greatest songs are unsurpassed in my opinion. That is my point, I am not taking any thing away from Ruben. He is the best but "Caminando" does not reach the higher plateus (is this a valid word?) 3 stars for "Caminando" and I am also gonna walk my way out of here while I still got time!

A great disc.......2004-09-06

A great group of songs including a song to open your mind about society (Prohibido olvidar). The song "Caminado" (Walking) reflects about how we walk trough life and how it affects us. Blades is a great composer and his music is not just poetic, is social. ¡Viva la salsa!

Caminando: Ruben Blades is Brilliant.......2001-08-12

I love good Salsa music. Panamanian Ruben Blades is my favorite Salsa Artist. 'Caminando' has some of the best original Salsa, in my opinion, that Blades has ever created in his brilliant career.

If you like the superb latin music Blades makes, you need this CD in your collection.

Several songs in this CD are among the best he has ever produced, in my opinion. 'Tengan Fe' has a strong and energetic horn, rhythm combination that drives hard and fast while Blades soars above with an artful but strong vocal. It's a fantastic piece.

'Prohibido Olvidar' is one of the most political, humorous and thoughtful Salsa songs Blades has produced. If you have an aversion to tolitarian and authoritarian goverments, along with corruption and collective stupidities associated with them, you'll find the lyrics en Espanol to be excellent. They also translate very well in English.

Without this CD you don't have a full appreciation of Ruben Blades and the music he is capable of.

Smooth and compelling!.......2000-01-03

This is the third album of Ruben Blades I have bought, and I am amazed at the variety of "flavors" he can produce. The musicians on CAMINANDO have a very smooth jazz brass sound, making everything sophisticated and classy. This seems to me to be the most "political" album of the three (others are LA ROSA DE LOS VIENTOS and TIEMPOS); the lyrics are gritty, smoky, challenging, and at the same time very moving and poetic. I love the clarity of Blades' Spanish - plus, this album includes direct English translations of all the songs, a real benefit.

No one else mixes rhythm, politics and emotions quite like he does. He doesn't have the greatest voice on the planet, but everything he sings rings so true, who cares? And anyway, you sure can dance to it.

I usually like 2-3 songs in one album but this Enemigo's new album is just great from the beginning to the end. He is soulful and hip, setting a new trend in the music industry. This is a must have album in 2005.

Excellent and more true to its roots.......2002-06-21

We stumbled upon this group while browsing the Ann Arbor Michigan Art Fair in July 2000, and we wound up staying until they closed up shop for the evening. I have spent time in Peru, and my wife is from there, and I found their music much more true to the spirit of the Andes than many who interpret flute music as a vehicle for "new age" stuff. The Art Fair got more than they bargained for (in a good way) when they arranged for them to be there.

Love the flutes!.......2001-07-07

I saw these guys playing at Summerfest in Milwaukee, WI in July 2001 and was just enraptured. They have a unique sound, defined by the different flutes as melody. I can't even begin to describe how this music is able to grab hold of you, but it does a really good job of that! I bought this CD as well as anoher, "Proyeccion Inkas" and was pleased with both. As someone who is mostly interested in hard rock, this seems like an odd choice for me, but I was just drawn to it. The sound is much better live, so if you get a chance, go see them. They are based out of MN, I believe.

Excellent Revueltas.......2000-11-09

Revueltas is rightfully being recorded more and more frequently these days, and this recording is an excellent account of his work. Up until now, most of Revueltas' recordings have featured his large orchestral works. This CD is different because it displays some of his smaller scale, lesser known pieces. With three exceptions, the pieces here are under four minutes. His music is still very rhythmic, creative, and compelling. The performers are all excellent, as is the recording quality.

The best known Revueltas work is Sensemayá, which is heard here in a different version from the well known full orchestra setting. Since I had heard the longer version first, this version initially sounded somewhat clipped to me - as though it were missing something. I have since changed my mind and find this to be a similarly thrilling account - more so than some full orchestra readings. The playing and conducting are intense and excellent. Sensemayá is a thrilling piece to listen to and is even more thrilling to see performed live. Other excellent Sensemayá accounts have been given by Eduardo Mata, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Leonard Bernstein. There is a relatively lame account by Esa-Pekka Salonen that should be avoided.

The notes are detailed and well written, including information on the numerous talented musicians who collaborated for this recording. If you already have one Revueltas CD, this will make a great second.

Wonderful music of the Mexican "Stravinsky".......1999-07-30

Silvestre Revueltas (1899-1940) is in many ways the Mexican Stravinsky. He uses harsh rhythms and tonalities, folk sounding melodies, and modern structures. He builds all of these things and many more into music that is totally unique. "Sensemaya' is the first recording of many of the works included, or as in the case of the title piece, and earlier version of a more well know composition. All of the tracks are wonderful and varied, with music going from small chamber ensembles to larger groups, and both vocals and instrumentals. If you only listen to one track, make it the last one, "Sensemaya". It is a purely musical setting of the poem by Nicolas Guillen describing the cermony for the killing of a serpent. There are two basic elements in the piece, the snake and the struggling of the priests to overcome it. The struggling music interupts more and more until it literally overpowers the snake motif, just as the ritual would progress in real life. In this piece, you can hear all of the wonderful qualities of Revueltas' music, especially his favorite - the struggle between life and death. In all, this is an excellent recording of some very unjustly overlooked music of an equally overlooked genius.

I can also recommend two other recordings of Revueltas' music - "La Coronela,Itnerarios, and Colorines" conducted by Gisele Ben-Dor with the Santa Barbara Symphony (Koch 3-7421-2HI) and "Night of the Mayas" (Catalyst 09026-62672-2) which includes the closest thing Revueltas wrote to a symphony - "La Noches de los Maya", a 4 movement suite of a film score that covers every possible human emotion and almost every possible modern musical idea - including free percusion cadenzas! One desccription I have heard of this piece is Stravinsky after a bottle of Tequila! I liked the piece so much that my high school band is performing "Mayas" on the field this fall as our contest show. My students absolutly love the music! (remember, we're talking about HIGH SCHOOL students that only listen to pop on the radio!)

Any recording of this master's work would be a welcome addition to a record collection, and "Sensemaya" would be an excellent place to start.

Este disco pego duro!!! Los arreglos musicales son excelente y la voz esta buena. Tun Tun tiene un estilo propio y tiene mucho charisma cuando grita "Tun Tun." Canciones como "Caminando," "Dudo Mucho," "Cuando Acaba El Placer," "Cuando La Brisa Llega," "Vuelve A Mi," "Solo Yo Te Digo," "La Fiebre," y "Esta Soledad" son los mejores de el disco. Definitivamente el mejor disco de el ano 1999, sobre pasando "Pintame" de Elvis Crespo.

Unlike the second album all the songs from this one are great. At first I had to get use to the sound of his vocals but the music just takes over.

"Vuelve A Mi" y "Cuando Acaba El Placer" son los mas romanticos del disco. Tonny Tun Tun ha trabajado con artistas como Grupo Mania, Maria Alejandra, Elvis Crespo, y Grupo Karis entre otros. Ahora es uno de los mejores interpretes de merengue en estos momentos. Ademas de ser un exelente cantante es uno de los mejores productores y arreglistas. Mucho exito para Tonny Tun Tun.
